The other thread was almost full, so here's a bright, shiny new one.

And here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And just in case you haven't discovered it yet, here is the recipe thread. Some truly lovely recipes on here that are worth a try.

You can get banana shallots cheaply in Asian supermarkets.

For lasagnes and moussakas I do much the same as Mrs HP - cream cheese, cream and grated cheese (and sometimes mixed with one egg).

For shepherd's pie mashed celeriac or swede (or both) with butter and cream.

I made Jamie Oliver's fish pie the other day, and didn't bother with a topping at all - just cooked it in the oven with some tin foil on top.

prettybird · 20/08/2013 17:06

If you look at the link I mentioned below/above, you'll see that the "mash" I use is cheesy/eggy/cauliflowery/bacony and makes a great topping. You could even put grated cheddar/parmesan and dods of butter on top and grill it for an extra tasty topping.

You've made me want to get a leg/shoulder of lamb for the weekend so that I can have left over meat to make a shepherd's pie with! Grin

Twit · 20/08/2013 17:21

Daisychicken mentioned a cheesy eggy topping for somehting, just thought it sounded cheap n easy.
I think using leeks instead of shallots could work though.
PrettybirdI have included your cheesy eggy cauliflowers mash to my list thank you.
I thought that's what a green salad would involve, just wasn't sure about the lettuce, although the sauce you linked to mrshp has flour in it. Would you just not add it or replace with something else?
Hopefully me asking dimwit questions will help other people?

MrsHerculePoirot · 20/08/2013 17:32

Rats - missed the flour aspect! Ignore that then...

BeenieBaby · 20/08/2013 17:36

Sigh non sleeping dc have pushed me to snacking and carb creep. I need a proper whack from biwi's big stick. Strangely I didn't go for toast (huge bread fan previously) but for things I don't normally even like - porridge and peanut butter! Please help me get my head back on track. I've been doing really well (coming up to week 5) and have lost half a stone with another half to lose before I get back to Pre-pregnancy weight. Also DH has started doing it with me and bizarrely that seems to make things harder as I like eating on my own schedule and instead I find myself having to eat according to his timings (before he goes to work/ have dinner together etc) :( I keep telling myself tomorrow is another day and I was hoping to avoid carbs today but had leftover dc's fish pie and some fruit...

TheRedRabbit · 20/08/2013 20:03

Twit you can make a cheesy topping if you mix beaten egg with greek yoghurt and grated cheese. If you stir it all around until it is the consistency of a thick yoghurt and plonk on top of things then bake or grill, it goes kind of firm and is really yummy. Great as a topping for mousaka but you could use it for any kind of bake or even lasagne. Sorry I don't know quantities as I do everything by eye but I would guess at maybe 2 beaten eggs and 200ml yoghurt plus 100-200g cheese according to taste would be right for a dish that serves 4.

Today I have had:
B: crustless quiche with bacon and courgette
L: chicken salad and vegetable broth which turned out to have beans in so I didn't eat them (was quite tricky!)
S: hunk of cheese
D: aubergine and parmesan bake. Cheeky G and T :) (practically carb free isn't it?)

LilyAmaryllis · 20/08/2013 23:08

Good luck with the assessment Crabby and see you on that wagon on 9th Sept!

Today DMIL (who has also joined us on hol) said "I'm a bit worried you're eating too much fat. It seems a bit like the Atkins diet"

"It IS a bit like the Atkins diet" (but obviously far superior I know BIWI ) I say. "Don't worry its PERFECTLY healthy"

I wish Dr Atkins hadn't got himself such a bad reputation. People think ketosis is a bad state, its just fat-burning isn't it, eg really what you want surely!

Then my mum goes on about how she eats low fat this that and the other.... (she's overweight)

I'm not fighting it its just slightly annoying

Moussaka recipe (as typed by BIWI)

IPD Moussaka

500g lamb mince
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons tomato puree
100ml water
1 large aubergine
olive or groundnut oil
3 eggs
300ml double cream
200g Feta cheese

  • Pre-heat the oven to 180/GM4
  • Fry the lamb mince until starting to brown, breaking up lumps as it fries
  • Add the onion and garlic and continue frying until the onion has softened
  • Stir in the oregano, cinnamon, tomato puree and water. Bring to a simmer and then cover and cook for 20 mins over a low heat
  • Slice the aubergine, brush with oil and grill, fry or griddle until softened but not mushy - it should be golden coloured
  • Stir the meat and if it still looks a bit too liquid, simmer with the lid off for 5 minutes or so
  • Beat together the eggs and cream and stir in the crumbled Feta
  • Layer the aubergine over the meat and pour the Feta custard over the top
  • Bake in the oven for approximately 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown

In the book it says that this serves 2 - but I would make this quantity for 4. I'm sure it's a typo!

cheeseburger pie recipe:

Total carbs 9c. Serves 4
Ingredients:
500g minced beef
50g finely chopped onion
150g chopped mushrooms
100mls double cream
2 heaped tablespoons of mayo
150g strong cheddar grated
3 eggs
salt & pepper to taste
Fry mince, onion and mushrooms together until cooked season to taste, drain off fat, add Lee & Perrins sauce.
Place in a greased foil covered deep pie dish, flatten with spoon.
Beat eggs add mayo, cream and cheese.
Pour over the top of mince, drop olives around the dish and bake in oven Gas mark 5 for 20 to 25 mins until set and golden brown.
Leave to cool before taking out of pie dish, remove foil.
Cut in to portions and wrap in cling film
This freezes very well.
Lovely with salad, cauli mash, or stir fry (Great in lunchboxes)

Optional 1 Tablespoon Lea & Perrins 2c and 10 black olives

Two types of cheesey toppings and both yummy!! I've had both cold in lunchboxes with salad and hot with veg. Both reheat well so perfect for extra meals.

daisychicken · 20/08/2013 23:29

While I think about it, both recipes serve 4 and are large portions - I find we can stretch both to 5 or possibly 6 with veg for an evening meal.

BlackAffronted · 21/08/2013 07:42

Been up since 5am with agonising period pain, it always happens a few weeks in Bootcamp for me :( I dont get periods usually, so I take bad with this. At least I know why I wont lose weight this week (I retain everything during this time) and will look forward to a drop once its all gone.

Secondsop · 21/08/2013 08:05

Cheesy egg topping: mix full far creme fraiche, beaten egg, grated cheese. That's what I use for the top of moussaka.

So. We had a party last night and apart from a significant amount of prosecco and more dark chocolate than is advisable I was doing well. Then at the last flipping minute, while clearing up for god's sake, I ate a spoon of potato salad. I know, I know, I don't know what came over me. It was my homemade potato salad so at least I know there wasn't any added sugar or anything in it but I've done so well to avoid potato to date. My sole consolation is that I know from my blood sugar testing when I had GD in pregnancy that potato doesn't do much to my sugars (unlike grains, which send them mental).

NigellasGuest · 21/08/2013 08:47

BlackAffronted you have my sympathies! I have TOM now, having not had a proper one since I don't know when. It could be this WOE, I don't know, but I think it's bloating me and could be the reason for my recent wild fluctuations in weight. It doesn't come with any pain, in my case, so I do feel sorry for you and hope it passes asap.....

Secondsop · 21/08/2013 08:55

blackaffronted my sister also gets really painful periods on this woe. I don't, but I also don't go anywhere near the scales until afterwards because it's never good news for me.

silverangel · 21/08/2013 09:38

Hi all

I am on day three of strictly following boot camp and I am thirsty. ALL OF THE TIME. I darnk about 4l of water yesterday and still thirsty. Is this normal, or have I managed to give myself diabetes?!! Will it pass?

NigellasGuest · 21/08/2013 10:03

there's a phone-in now on Radio 5 live about whether "slimming clubs" work, if anyone is brave enough to call up and extol the virtues of LC-ing!

CheeseAndFriedMushrooms · 21/08/2013 11:00

Silver I was really thirsty too, keep drinking and it will pass

WillieWaggledagger · 21/08/2013 11:19

silver just make sure you aren't low on electrolytes like sodium/potassium with that quantity of water (I may be wrong but the thirst can also be a symptom of low electrolytes too) - may be worth adding some lo-salt (mixture of sodium and potassium salts), adding a bit of salt to your food, or including some salmon or avocado or other potassium-rich foods.

i know others do take a (sugar-free) soluble electrolyte tablet daily too just in case

MrsHerculePoirot · 21/08/2013 14:28

Gosh, everyone is quiet today, hope it is because you are all out enjoying the sunshine.

I find I get quite thirsty, probably as I am eating lots or salty things. The more I drink, the more I want!

CrabbyBigBottom · 21/08/2013 15:19

Lily thanks so much! Smile I am absolutely petrified - really crap at role play and assessments, I get so nervous that I can't think straight! Hardly slept last night, silly numpty that I am. Hmm

Lighthousekeeping · 21/08/2013 15:43

I had two big fat chips last night and half a bottle of wine. I feel like shit today.

I'm back at work tonight and all I've got in the fridge is leeks eggs double cream and bacon and various spices. What can I make with that?

SamanthaJones · 21/08/2013 16:09

You could make a really great cheese, bacon and leek omelete, use the leeks like onions. It would be lovely.

Lighthousekeeping · 21/08/2013 16:35

Would you put the cheese in with the eggs or separate?

SamanthaJones · 21/08/2013 16:40

I would chope the leeks, like onions and cook them. Then I'd cut the bacon into small pieces with scissors and cook it. I'd grate the cheese. Then I'd whisk the eggs and put them in a pan to make the omelette. I'd add the cheese towards the end when it was nearly cooked and cook it long enough to melt. Then I'd throw in the bacon and leeks at the last minute. And have with a crisp salad or on its own. It'll be LOVELY!

Lighthousekeeping · 21/08/2013 16:45

Oh thank you!!

PinkPeanuts · 21/08/2013 17:48

Hello everyone, does anyone mind if I seek refuge on the tail end of this thread? I've signed up for September bootcamp but I've been low carbing sort of bootcamp lite style for a couple of weeks and had lost around 5lbs but somehow since the weekend, chocolate has crept in and now I'm pretty sure I've undone all of my hard work. I desperately want to get back on track but typically when I'm off track it takes weeks for me to get back to where I should be and I just don't want to regress that far this time, I want to just saddle up my low carb horse and get stuck back in and start losing again. Does anybody have any advice at all?

Sorry to come in feeling all sorry for myself!
