Week 2 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - my favourite week!

Morning all!

I see a few have braved the spreadsheet already, and some nice results coming in Smile

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_zdJLFAioyDd3ePLj7Tg5HnIu6E8JbdmsVyqP28Xsak/edit#gid=1892381976

I love this week because it's so often a (lovely) surprise for so many - especially anyone who hasn't low carbed before.

I have noted several lapses already, however! Remember, this WOE isn't very forgiving, so it is really important that you don't cheat. (Hospital stays etc are clearly something you can't do anything about, however).

But let's put last week behind us, and focus on a good, strict, week ahead, before we move on to Bootcamp Light.

We've been invited to friends' this evening, for a music night (choosing an album from '1001 albums you must hear before you die' - a bit like a book club). It's pizza night, apparently, so I've made the shallot and Gruyère tart from the recipe thread to take for us.

Here's to a good week Flowers

I wonder if the missing posters have tag alerts turned off? I turned them off when they were first introduced because I didn't want to be tagged all the time especially if arguing (not that I do much) and no idea how to turn them back on, I keep forgetting to look.

I'm struggling a bit, this always happens to me, I just feel that everything tastes too greasy and rich after a while and even when hungry I don't feel like eating anything, leading to snacking and slippery slopes if I'm not careful. I know the WOE works, I know it's good for me, but my goodness it's hard.

On the plus side I felt slim this morning and grabbed a tape measure, I have lost 2" from my waist since whenever I last measured, which was some months ago but still good.

I'm the same. I make big pots of chilli/ chicken chorizo stew/ boeuf bourguignon/ curry so there's little effort in heating up a portion for dinner. They seem less rich than the creamy, cheesy options.

alwaysonadiet1 · 25/05/2024 16:15

I eat a lot of pickles too!

EasilyDefined · 25/05/2024 16:39

I eat a lot of pickles too, I make pickled onions in autumn (no sugar) and love eating them as a snack with a bit of cheese, they go well with beef based dishes too, cuts the richness. A pot of chilli is a staple here but it’s normally DD that makes it and she always puts beans in, I have to pick round them. She always puts lentils in spag bol too. Unfortunately she won’t eat curry, DS won’t eat more traditional stews/casseroles and I won’t eat anything with chorizo in, we are a fussy bunch.

Stowickthevast · 25/05/2024 16:52

Checking in as have been largely absent this week.

I've been struggling with a horrible cold and cough. It's been hard to resist diving for some comfort carbs but I have stayed strong largely, although had a few nuts at work on Wednesday.

I'm ok when we have enough food in the house, it's just the couple of days before a big shop that are harder.

On the evenings you are out and about, could you leave them to their sandwiches and have yours in a thermos?

alwaysonadiet1 · 25/05/2024 17:04

How about Asian soups. Pho is fab and you can leave the noodles out or put in zoodles.

EasilyDefined · 25/05/2024 18:13

Thanks for all the suggestions (there is virtually nothing all four of us like apart from pizza, pasta and chilli). I think it's all part of a bigger pattern of neurodivergence in our family (DS diagnosed, DD on the waiting list, DH a LOT of traits, me some traits). This means that the rest of them are very disorganised and I end up with virtually all the mental load stuff for four adults (they try but...) I also have two part time jobs and a serious voluntary role, a lot of hobbies and a good social life. Meal planning and cooking is where the plate spinning always seems to fail because of the diverse palates and busy lives, it just defeats me. I am improving my own eating and exercise habits though. It really helps having this thread to let off steam a bit because most people I know IRL still regard low carb as a bit "out-there".

BIWI · 25/05/2024 18:14

@Stowickthevast

Meal planning will be your saviour here! If you've planned your meals then you will have the necessary (low carb) ingredients to hand.

It's a lot less 'out there' than when I first started running Bootcamp threads @EasilyDefined!

There were only a handful of us who were prepared to put our heads above the parapet to talk about low carbing, and oh, how we were pounced upon. It's very different now (at least on Mumsnet), and there are many more posters who will post about low carb dieting and recommend it.

I am tending to drink tea when I'm out now, either herbal or normal with just a teeny bit of milk (about a teaspoon). Those flasks look great but I really hate having to cart extra things about and only take a small bag with keys, phone and wallet most of the time, maybe a tiny bottle of suncream in summer. I get shoulder ache with heavier bags. I hate carrying water bottles for the same reason.

I am the same about not carrying much.

However, it is a tiny flask - about mobile phone size -and fits in the phone pocket of my rain-coat. There is enough cream for one or two coffees only.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 25/05/2024 18:38

(I don't share my cream so a tiny flask is fine. With a 'Marie Antoinette' dismissive wave I let them eat cake. :) )

EasilyDefined · 25/05/2024 19:52

A couple of bootcamps ago I froze some in ice cube trays then popped one in my thermal mug to take to work (I sometimes have a coffee after lunch) but really didn’t enjoy the taste at all. It is instant coffee there but it does taste OK with milk. So I have tried to cut it out altogether. Proper coffee with cream I’m not sure about, I’d have to freeze it again as I don’t use enough in a week. I tend to use soured cream if I’m cooking with cream or making a dressing. Perhaps I will buy a small pot again this week and make some proper coffee to try it in.

Good evening all,
I hope everyone has enjoyed the lovely weather today. I've heard it's going to turn tomorrow (well, in my corner of Staffordshire anyway) so can't make a start on the jungle I call a garden. 🙄

I wore a top today I wouldn't have dreamed wearing a few months ago and felt quite confident in it. I've also took my monthly body shots tonight (front, left side, right side) and compared them to the pictures I took on 1st January. My belly no longer protrudes PAST my boobs and I actually have a waist! And it's visable!! 😂😂

B/L: 3 slices of bacon
D: Cold meat salad (ham, beef, corned beef) and cheese.

I had planned on doing a mega batch of coleslaw this evening, but went veg/salad shopping today and my fridge is chocka, so a bowl wouldn't fit in.

Hello all - after last week's shocker things seem to be heading in the right direction except a few times between breakfast and lunch I have been so hungry that I feel nauseous. Breakfast is a decent helping of yoghurt.
Eating a banana helps.

BIWI · 25/05/2024 22:05

Banana?! 19.3g carbs per 100g! Bananas definitely not allowed on Bootcamp - nor on Bootcamp Light.

Seen this on Facebook tonight, mixed successes at making in the comments but maybe worth a go? 🧀

Also saw these which sound good - thinking ground almonds could be used instead of breadcrumbs?

Sorry.
One banana but I did serve the family pizza fest last night and ate lean chicken with veg. Halo

BIWI · 26/05/2024 08:07

But why though? Of all the fruit that you could have chosen, the banana is absolutely the worst for Bootcamp. And we're not even in Bootcamp Light yet, where you are allowed (some) fruit!

OP posts:
EasilyDefined · 26/05/2024 08:16

I was thinking about the fruit, I went to the allotment last night and it looks as though I'm in for a bumper strawberry crop with the first just starting to ripen. I made jam last year but much of it is uneaten because I stopped eating jam and no one else here eats much of it. Are strawberries allowed on BC light? I have mainly eaten blueberries through the last few months.

prettybird · 26/05/2024 08:19

@Gingerwarthog - I know you've already suffered @BIWI's Big Stick Wink, but why lean chicken? Confused

Just checking that you've properly absorbed the principles whereby Fat is good for you?

So chicken with skin on (crispy chicken skin is a lovely treat Smile), fatty cuts of meats....

I hope the veg were slathered in butter Grin

Gingerwarthog · 26/05/2024 08:23

It's ok @prettybird - the chicken was served with cheese cubes, salami and heaps of creamy salad dressing. I was trying to sound contrite and virtuous....

EasilyDefined · 26/05/2024 08:29

I still find it hard psychologically to eat the fat on meat. I had pork chops and steamed green veg with mustard and I did eat the fat but it still feels weird even though it's tasty. Butter on veg renders them inedible for me so fatty meat it has to be in that sort of meal.

Yes, strawberries are allowed (in moderation) - they're 5.8g carbs per 100g. Go easy with the blueberries though, as they are 8.7g carbs per 100g.

Thanks, I don't eat huge quantities of either just a few chopped up in my yogurt most days.
