Jan '24 Dry Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 3

Morning all.

So I've put the Big Stick down, and let's start this week afresh.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Remember, this is only a four week challenge, and we're now half-way through. For the next two weeks, if you want, you can do Bootcamp Light (which simply means that you can add in some fruit (berries mainly), and some nuts and seeds. In moderation only, please.

But NO ALCOHOL!.

Whether you started on 1 or 2 January, we've now completed a whole fortnight without booze. Hopefully you should be feeling the benefits of this beyond just it helping with weight loss. Having moaned about not sleeping better, which is supposed to be one of the key benefits, last night I did sleep very well (having had the worst night's sleep the night before!), so hopefully it's all kicking in now.

@Metabolicallycomplicated that recipe does sound tasty! How many aubergines would you use for 2 people? And for 4?

@MrsTerryPratchett you are the second person to mention tea as a treat. I do have a cupboard full of various teas but a new one as a planned break in the day, nice cup and no demands while I sip it sounds lovely.

I'm off to Google new teas

I got mine at a tea festival thing. You could try loads and see what floats your boat.

One aubergine made 2 big portions so I’d say 2 for 4 :)

Caught sight of myself in the mirror earlier and the first thought I had was being proud of my body. Very different to my usual reaction! So celebrating that and adding it to my list of goals for this BC - having a better relationship with myself regardless of the number on the scales.
Also loving all the new recipes and hearing how everyone is doing. Thank you all!

LowCarbingIn2024 · 21/01/2024 17:44

That's such a lovely post @bluesupermoon

I'm a loooong way off feeling that way about my body, but I'll definitely add it to the goal list

Metabolicallycomplicated · 21/01/2024 20:01

Tonight I adapted a South African dish called boboti to low carb. It’s not the same because boboti has tons of dried fruit in it which makes the curry sweet, but it has kept the vibe.

It’s a minced beef dry curry you can make however you like, then you flatten it out in the pan once it’s cooked. You then mix eggs, a bit of milk and a bit of double cream together and pour the mix over the curry then bake the whole thing in the oven for a bit. It’s not boboti, but it is a really lovely curry flavoured omelette type thing! Grin

Oh @Metabolicallycomplicated i make a low carb babotie too. Bloody love it! Like you I leave out the sultanas I also just use cream and egg for the topping (no milk though). It works really well and the flavours are very similar. So delicious! Looks like you’ve added veg too?
@LC4life ha ha my youngest DD does cheer too & I know what you mean about the music! The whole thing is quite overwhelming isn’t it? Luckily hers is just a school team so aren’t very good so don’t go to many comps; saving my ears! And
£££s - crazy expensive sport too!
GOOD LUCK TOMORROW ALL

LilianaVikavanovich · 21/01/2024 22:31

@NotDonna amd @LC4life my DD was into cheer too , every competition one of the mums got a speeding ticket as we traipsed all over the place ( do they still wear the big bows ? DD is grown up and left home now ) they were quite a good team back in the day though

Went to the gym , just walked / jogged on a treadmill for 30 mins or so , as once again we couldn’t go for a walk ( why is it always stormy on bin night ?)

good day food wise , though cauliflower cheese with frozen cauli is not really up to standard , but will make a lovely soup for lunch tomorrow!

Goodiewhemper · 22/01/2024 05:58

We were in the path of Storm Isha yesterday so I cooked early in anticipation of a power cut. We had roasted paprika chicken thighs cooked with olive oil and finished with butter and served with sprouts and green beans. I have leftovers for lunch. Dinner tonight yet to be decided.

The damage across the region seems to be extensive. I need to try and get to work in a bit so having a quick coffee for fortification before I brave the roads and destruction 😞.

I had a 2lb loss this week and I am aiming for the same this week. Have a great day everyone.

Goodiewhemper · 22/01/2024 06:01

NotDonna · 21/01/2024 09:38

Could I have the recipe for your cannelloni please @Metabolicallycomplicated ?

@Metabolicallycomplicated has the best recipes. I have made a few of hers and every single one has been a resounding success. I am eagerly awaiting the cookbook. 😃

mimosa1 · 22/01/2024 06:42

Hope things aren't too bad near you @Goodiewhemper. I'm in the south so not too bad but the noise of the wind last night was quite something!

I've lost 1kg this week and very pleased with it as I've had to deal with travel / bdays and being ill. I'm another kg away from just getting under 80kg, so I'll be aiming for that this week!

You’re so lovely! Glad you’ve enjoyed them!

One thing I’ve gotten out of boot camp is just how much I enjoy cooking on this WOE. In the Before Times cooking was DH’s job so over the years I lost connection with it but actually I find adapting recipes to low carb quite creative and a fun little challenge.

bluesupermoon · 22/01/2024 07:46

Up 0.5lbs but still feeling good about this WOE and my progress vs last year. Noticed I didn't feel as hungry the last couple of days as well.

Thesoundofmusic23 · 22/01/2024 07:52

@Goodiewhemper hope the damage all around not too bad and you get to work ok.

Another 2lbs here which is more than I was expecting. It’s been an up and down week in all senses and I switched to bc light mid week as was missing certain things too much. A few blueberries and pecans with breakfast have definitely helped and a piece or two of dark choc at the end of the day a couple of days were well received. Think my hormones have been on the move this week. Onwards and downwards - I’m in for a long term change so small increments are good.

Metabolicallycomplicated · 22/01/2024 08:01

1.4lbs off for me this week which considering I was showing a stubborn 2lb gain mid week is a win!

NSV’s this week:

My Endometrial hyperplasia is clearly improving because I’ve stopped bleeding officially Grin. Given high doses of progesterone hadn’t been working for 5 weeks and the only other change I’ve made is this WOE, my working theory is that this WOE has brought my insulin production right down (I’m insulin resistant) and therefore my oestrogen production has also come down meaning the progesterone therapy is now enough to match my oestrogen level and my endometrium has started to regress (finally!!)

Like you @Thesoundofmusic23 this has to be a long term WOE for me rather than a short term diet so I’m fairly unconcerned about the speed the weight is coming off and more concerned about staying on plan. They say don’t they that you have to do something consistently for 10 weeks for it to become a perpetual habit and no longer a conscious effort.

Jollyholibobs · 22/01/2024 08:29

Morning all. I hope we have all weathered the storms ok.
3lbs down this week so pleased after last weeks STS. Yesterday’s birthday lunch was fish pie, peas and broccoli. Accepted a small portion of fish picked out the fish as best I could but there was lots of mushy potato all through by the time it was served. Not a lot of fish. Deviled the chocolate tart and ice cream and the later b’day cake.😇 and did not feel deprived as I had fixed my mindset to focus on how I would feel after if I ate pudding and cake. Did get snidey comment from SIL but shrugged it off.

is it just me or is the spreadsheet failing to calculate this weeks loss?

Jollyholibobs · 22/01/2024 08:30

Meant to say really good to see how helpful to your health this WOE IS @Metabolicallycomplicated

Jollyholibobs · 22/01/2024 08:31

And that should say declined chocolate tart.

lurknolinger · 22/01/2024 08:56

Hope the storm doesn't impact anyone here and you all get your wheelie bins back ok

I agree about @Metabolicallycomplicated recipes - in fact all the recipe ideas have been great and inspired me to add new things to my repertoire.

1lb off for me this week - which I'm fine with - but I was another 2 lbs lighter on Friday morning (explanation below) so this weeks goal is to get back to that and get another 1lb off!

I went out for brunch on Saturday - I had soft shell crab eggs Benedict with jalapeno hollandaise, (which was amazing) I asked for spinach instead of the muffin, but didn't realise the crab was going to be battered! But the batter was v light and I managed not to eat most of it so thought that was ok.

Dinner was HM butter chicken and LC Naan bread with a small amount of Cauliflower rice everyone else had take away curries so I'd cooked my own to avoid hidden carbs (thanks again to the posters that provided those lovely recipes for me)
Had 2 0% alcohol beers (I'd ordered in Citra ones BIWi posted about) which are low carb too.

Sunday we were out for Sunday lunch with family. I had roast lamb with veg (no roasties) but had a small amount of carrot and parsnip and ordered cauliflower cheese (only extra veg option available) to bulk up the veg, the sauce was clearly made with a roux sauce. The gravy probably had some flour in it too. Also had a 0% alcohol gin and slim line tonic, which turned out to be the Fever Tree tonic which isn't LC ☹️ but I didn't know until I'd drunk it. So after that I stuck to water, but generally over the weekend I don't think I hit my water target either.

Anyway sorry for the essay, but I really was pleased with my choices and had hoped they had t done too much damage, but I'm 2lbs up!!
I can't really put it down to any one thing but collectively all those small things that aren't 100% on plan had made a difference!
So that's really good for thought for me - especially as I'm out for lunch on Saturday and Sunday next weekend too.
So I'm going to have a really strict week and research the menus so I can plan my socialising food and drink better!

Oh and if anyone's still reading 😊 regarding @Metabolicallycomplicate comment about doing something for 10 weeks for it to be your new habit, I'd be up for joining anyone who wants to extend this on the general chat thread until Easter!

Have a good week everyone!

Also meant to say, good to see some great losses this week.

Column x on the s/sheet (total of loss to date) isnt right for me either, some look right but others aren't. Hopefully @finallyhere can take a look for us.

islandtiger · 22/01/2024 09:37

I've stayed the same AGAIN this week. Not entirely surprising as I have been eating less but not concentrating on strict LCBC or enough water, I have had too many distractions about my DM. I was on a very bumpy flight home from Bristol yesterday afternoon after 6 weeks away but we just beat the worst of the wind. Back with DH who is looking really great having dropped 21 Lbs since September. He's a much happier bunny too. So I'll be back on track with strict LCBC this week, and aiming to lose 4lb if not 6lb to get me into the magic under 140 lbs bracket for my BMI. I'd love to keep going for the 10 weeks as someone suggested. And looking forward to trying boboti 😋. Thanks to everyone posting delicious recipes and inspiring stories. I love this group. 😊

cathyandclaire · 22/01/2024 09:43

Lots of fantastic losses and NSVs - congratulations all!

I've been struggling with a virus, so have had to resort to lozenges/ sugar-free sweets to stop the constant hacking. My appetite has gone too, so inched down by a pound. Off to Miami in ten days, hoping to drop another pound or two before then.

Really fancy a Chinese hot and sour soup ( bizarrely) - don't suppose anyone has that in their repertoire? Metabolicallly - you can include it in your cookbook!

PurpleWhirple · 22/01/2024 09:47

Well overnight I've managed to lose one of the pounds that my new scales added on Sunday so I suppose I should count that as a win, but obviously it's showing as a 5lb gain!

Had my dad over for a roast yesterday and managed to avoid the potatoes while everyone else tucked in, as well as the sticky toffee pudding that came afterwards, so feeling pleased with myself for that. And that's the last of the Christmas leftovers from the freezer gone. Also still dry, I really wanted wine this weekend but didn't cave and I'm glad. Can't get over how much better I sleep without it.

I'm mentally preparing myself for a slow week 4 but going to keep working at it and plan to help me limit the damage as I'm away over the weekend and will definitely be having a glass or two of wine.
