Jan '24 Dry Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 3

Morning all.

So I've put the Big Stick down, and let's start this week afresh.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Remember, this is only a four week challenge, and we're now half-way through. For the next two weeks, if you want, you can do Bootcamp Light (which simply means that you can add in some fruit (berries mainly), and some nuts and seeds. In moderation only, please.

But NO ALCOHOL!.

Whether you started on 1 or 2 January, we've now completed a whole fortnight without booze. Hopefully you should be feeling the benefits of this beyond just it helping with weight loss. Having moaned about not sleeping better, which is supposed to be one of the key benefits, last night I did sleep very well (having had the worst night's sleep the night before!), so hopefully it's all kicking in now.

Dry January has been a wake up call here too , the worst part for me is making gravy for a Sunday roast without a glass of wine in my hand , and I was flopping around last night considering putting a bottle of white into the fridge
But I didn’t !

Re the sugar addiction , I’m sure I remember my mother reading a book called Pure , white and deadly (? ) back in the 70s or 80s

Im right beside you on the holiday @prettybird , we fly off on 10th March , I’m planning on trying on the shorts I couldn’t squeeze into last summer , hoping they fit ( or will fit soon )

Bodies eh @Metabolicallycomplicated how dare they behave like that

blackteaplease · 20/01/2024 11:51

I wish I was jetting off on holiday soon. We've booked Northern Spain for August. Feels a long time away but lots of time to shed some more weight.

BIWI · 20/01/2024 11:51

Yes @LilianaVikavanovich - 'Pure, white and deadly' by John Yudkin

Written in 1972, before the whole 'fat is bad' movement started.

But even then, he was vilified by the food industry and his work/writing completely rubbished and undermined by other scientists, especially Ancel Keys.

Great news about both weight and lack of bleeding @Metabolicallycomplicated! Flowers

@Metabolicallycomplicated that’s wonderful news. As one who had a whole year on the not too distant past bleeding every day I can say it’s good to be past it. Long may it last 🙌

prettybird · 20/01/2024 13:38

Fantastic news @Metabolicallycomplicated - on both counts Smile

Nestnearlyempty · 20/01/2024 13:54

I have been away with work this week and got a child (ok young adults) birthday today. I’d tried really hard while away and resisted the wine, bread rolls and carby potatoes at the work dinner, tried to get as low carb lunches as I could etc. it felt like much harder work than being at home with definite hunger pangs.

I still weighed in +1.8lb heavier than when I went. And that’s without tonight’s meal out. Am driving so no alcohol will be easy. But the brownies I baked this morning will be harder to resist….

i am going to keep drinking herbal drinks and choose wisely this evening and hope to keep damage to a minimum. Walked the dog once already and will have another walk this afternoon so a decent step count in the bag too.

TheOnlyMrsW · 20/01/2024 14:39

Gah just typed a really long post and lost it, the short version is: greatlooking food, yay for good news on the scales and elsewhere, v jealous of holidays and completely understand the "fuck it's" although am resisting 🤣.
1/2 down on the scales this morning finally so 10 days to lose another 1 1/2lb to get to my BC target. Happy weekend all!!!!

BIWI · 20/01/2024 15:23

45 days till our holiday! Not sure quite what shape I'll be by then, but I know I'll be lighter/slimmer than the last time we went.

Great news on the bleeding and the weight @Metabolicallycomplicated. I'm off to the sun for a shortish break at the beginning of Feb, so extra incentive for this next ten days or so. Looking a little grey and lumpy at the moment!

BIWI · 20/01/2024 16:33

Yes, I can't wait for a bit of sunshine!

NotDonna · 20/01/2024 18:15

Great news metabolically on both counts.
I was going to make the shawarma today (for tonight’s tea) and the moussaka (for another day) but have been a bit busy and then DH has messed up the kitchen making very carby dim sum for himself and DD1 and I’m refusing to tidy up after him. So tiday
bfast - 16/8
lunch - pan fried tomatoes, kale and eggs with garlic and a small handful of seeds
dinner - lamb steaks with veg
need to up the water!!

prettybird · 20/01/2024 18:38

Just realised I made a mistake with my turkey parmigiana it's a long time since I made it and I didn't check the recipe Blush

I forgot to fry the coated turkey steaks before putting the tomato sauce and mozzarella on top of them BlushShock

I'm just going to cook the dish for longer and hope for the best Grin

venusandmars · 20/01/2024 18:59

I just used normal ground almonds for the keto naan - still seemed to be fine.

After dh and I both succumbing to norovirus I am at last feeling able to look at the thread and read and write about food!

Food today:
B - sips of water
L - sips of water
D - a whole glass of water and a mug of peppermint tea - got to rehydrate!

Off to bed early hoping that I can sleep through the last of the miseries and wake tomorrow feeling a bit better.

BIWI · 20/01/2024 19:15

Oh no! Sorry to hear that @venusandmars and hope you're (both) feeling better soon

I made the keto naans, just using normal ground almonds. I think they were slightly overdone but still tasted good and the garlic butter made all the difference. I made DH and I two each as they didn’t look very big but, as is often the case, I forget the ingredients are much more filling than carby ones so I only ate one.

Good good day so far despite spending the afternoon at a 3 year olds birthday party and having an actual piece of cake shoved into my face by my DS. I didn’t eat it!

B: 16:8
L:leftover cannelloni
D: Had a lovely dinner tonight: garlic and mint lamb patties with lamb fat fried leeks, spring greens and green beans with (of course) whipped feta on top.

I combined a pack of lamb mince, an egg, a teaspoon of garlic and a teaspoon of low carb mint sauce in the food processor then shaped into patties and fried them in a bit of olive oil (my mix made 3 big patties)

Removed patties from the pan, then browned off leeks and added green beans, then added spring greens and a knob of butter to finish.

Served with a dollop of whipped feta and it was yummy. It’s made 3 portions so plenty of left overs too :)

AIBConsiderate · 20/01/2024 19:48

Got my Green Chef delivery this morning and the first meal was a pulled beef chipotle chilli with cauli rice that was labelled as lower carb - it was lovely and I didn't have to think of what to cook tonight vs takeaway temptation.

Yesterday was HARD. It was inset day and I took it off to 'enjoy time with the kids'. Three year old twins and a six year old, I cried leaving the supermarket after one of them had screaming on the floor style tantrums, chased them around the soft play after they refused to leave, the works. But I managed to stay on plan! I sort of gave myself permission in advance to have a non bootcamp treat if I needed it, and that weirdly kept me going. I knew I could if I wanted to, which meant I couldn't just go 'fuck it'. And then finished the day with the lamb kebab with whipped feta which felt like a win.

PurpleWhirple · 20/01/2024 20:30

Interested to hear how green chef is. I like meal boxes and kits but all the usual suspects are too carby

We had the keto naans for tea too, just made with regular ground almonds. I didn't bother with garlic butter but they were still lovely. Delicious though they were, they were nothing like naan bread. Everyone enjoyed it with lamb doner and salad. Completely forgot to make the whipped feta though 😬

PurpleWhirple · 20/01/2024 20:32

My non-pre fried turkey parmigiana was fine Smile

Served it with shoogled sprouts. Very tasty.

Tomorrow night ds and his girlfriend are coming over. I'm doing roast chicken (in my chicken brick), which is ds' favourite. Haven't decided what to make for his veggie girlfriend yet.

AIBConsiderate · 20/01/2024 21:06

@PurpleWhirple I'll report back once I've tried them all. On the website you can filter for lower carb / keto so it's great for this. I love a box but I usually wait till I can find a good discount code. Speaking of which I may have some free box codes but am just checking in with the fam first.

I'm 1.7 lbs off my short term target which I think is achievable by the end of the month. How do I get out of the the fuckits and/or "treats" for doing so well attitude long term that always self sabotages my weightloss, especially when I've hit a goal 😒? I have a long way to go to a healthy weight.

Any top tips welcome. I'm aiming to make a meal plan today but don't have time to batch cook.

I know the thread has moved on but I note your NN and my thing is I bought eye wateringly expensive fancy tea. Wild purple black tea from Yunnan style of thing.

Makes me feel like I'm treating myself and is very soothing. In a lovely cup as well.

blackteaplease · 21/01/2024 07:30

@MrsTerryPratchett you are the second person to mention tea as a treat. I do have a cupboard full of various teas but a new one as a planned break in the day, nice cup and no demands while I sip it sounds lovely.

I'm off to Google new teas

LowCarbingIn2024 · 21/01/2024 07:36

Morning all. I know this is previous for most of you, but today's my weigh day, and I'm soooooo pleased. lost 3lb this week, which takes me to 1/2 a stone in total, which was my goal for this boot camp. So I'm doing cartwheels!
Even more pleased because DH is away this weekend and will be drinking. Usually in that circumstance, I'd have drunk too (ridiculous, but I would have done). This weekend, despite REALLY fancying it on Friday night, I didn't. Just kept telling myself - did I want my body to burn the sugar in booze or burn the fat on me!

I've still got a long way to go, but it's lovely to have ticked off the first goal and now I can get started on the second one already!

(disclaimer, my first goal was relatively easy, the next 3 are going to be tougher!)

From BIWI asking us our goal in week 2:0 -
First goal - get rid of Christmas weight (1/2 a stone) (already half way there)
2nd goal - to lose the stone I gained since it got cold/autumn kicked in which was from mid-october
3rd goal, to be overweight, not obese on the bmi scale, which is a further 3lb from goal 2.
Aiming for that by Easter (so if there's another bootcamp, I'll be signing up!)
4th goal... to be mid-way to a healthy bmi by mid July
