Week 3 - Back-to-School Bootcamp - Introducing Bootcamp Light

Morning campers!

Here's the link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

... where I can see that already we have 7 Bootcampers who have lost half a stone or more! That's really amazing. Flowers

It's not a competition though Smile so don't be downhearted if you haven't lost as much, or if your rate of loss is slower. We all start from different places and rates of loss vary from one to another.

If you've been reading my posts (you have, haven't you?!), you'll know that week 3 (and sometimes 4, even 5) can see a sharp slow down in the rate of loss. This is because by now, you've lost initial water weight and you've used up the glycogen - made from glucose, aka carbs - which is stored in your liver. And you're burning fat. The transition from carb-burning to fat-burning should now be well on the way and this is why it's now particularly important that we keep our focus on low carb foods, and resist the temptation to cheat.

It's easy to become complacent, but remember we're trying to create new habits here, and the general consensus seems to be that it takes 66 days to create a new habit. Today is day 15, so we have a way to go!

If you're struggling, post here. Ask for help. It's so much better when you know other people are going through the same thing.

@agnesmartin Thank you for the okra recipe. I would always think of okra as something eaten in the southern states of the US. I hadn’t thought of an Indian recipe.

I had a very frustrating dinner last night. We went out locally and I had checked the menu in advance but they had changed it removing all the low carb options.
I had been looking forward to celeriac remoulade with pork but they had changed it to parsnip. So I ignored the parsnips and ordered a side of cabbage.

The bigger problem was starters which were all risotto/gnocchi type things. So I did eat a couple of small Jerusalem artichokes without realising quite how bad they were for carbs but skipped the wine.

The restaurant is just at the end of the street and is usually good for LC.

BIWI · 30/09/2023 10:02

Sympathies @Porridgeislife - and thank you for delurking!

Best advice in the future is to check out a restaurant's menu online, so you know what you're going to able to choose. And if there isn't anything truly low carb, to plan your best strategy.

I did but sadly sometimes your diet has to come behind group harmony and friendship. I didn’t choose the restaurant and wasn’t going to tell a group of 6 that we needed to go somewhere else so I could eat low carb :)

BIWI · 30/09/2023 10:29

Well yes, I get that ...

Yay another pound off today 👍🏻 so that’s 11lb since the end of august. Kind of worried about next weekend though, I’m going back to Ireland with my bf for his brother’s 40th, for a long weekend. It will involve a LOT of drinking, it’s the arse end of Mayo and there’s literally nothing else to do there, plus from previous experience of being there it’s just not polite to turn down a drink (I have tried in the past as I just can’t keep up with his family 🤣). Will go to Tesco after we land though and stock up on LC food so at least I can stick to that.

nappiesandcontracts · 30/09/2023 13:18

Hi all, hope you're having good weekends so far! I've been following BC light this week with some (too much?) wine, nuts, berries and dark choc. Will scale back next week if the scales aren't favourable on Monday...

I've seen a few people mention low carb bread - are we allowed this on BC and which is the best make if so? Would be good to have some to reach for when I need a quick lunch.

Thanks!

BIWI · 30/09/2023 13:26

@nappiesandcontracts this is the site I use

The sliced loaf and the wraps are really good. I only occasionally buy the buns, as I find them a bit too big. But they can be very useful to have to hand if you're serving burgers.

Keto & Low Carb Bakery

Low carb bread and low carb rolls. Now you can enjoy the foods you miss and crave as part of your low carb meals.

Thanks @BIWI Smile

RooRooCooChoo · 30/09/2023 15:28

I have been gifted a night all on my own. Children and spouse away for the night, full control of the remote and all of London's Deliveroo options at my fingertips. I feel overwhelmed by choice and thought I might ask my fellow BC-ers what to order.

What, with no constraints except for the need to be LC, should I order to enjoy maximum indulgence on this most rare occasion?

BIWI · 30/09/2023 15:57

I'd order yourself a lovely fillet steak from a butcher that delivers to you, and would make some celeriac chips and a green salad with a garlicky dressing to go with that. Oh, with a glass of red wine or two.

I love evenings in on my own!

OP posts:
Porridgeislife · 30/09/2023 16:05

I’d probably go for Thai. Thai basil chicken, chicken satay and tom yum soup.

Very much miss decent Thai now we’ve moved outside of London 😢

ChimneyPot · 30/09/2023 19:05

I tried to make a celeriac cake my mixing an egg into some left over celeriac and leek mash and fried it up but it was a bit too liquid. Is there anything that I could use to dry it up a bit?

Todays food

B: FFGY with cream Coffee with cream
L: celeriac and leek mash with egg and friend ham
D: Piri piri chicken, cauliflower cheese, broccoli and coleslaw.

BIWI · 30/09/2023 19:26

Maybe some ground almonds?

OP posts:
Amomentonthelips · 30/09/2023 19:29

Thank you for the menu advice :) Think I will aim the seafood options.

Carrierbagofseedsandstars · 30/09/2023 21:07

Food today
B FFGY & chia seeds
L Tuna with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato
D Cauliflower cheese, broccoli, asparagus

At last I have finished the cauliflower cheese.

I've been out all day and haven't wanted to drink water without knowing where I would find a loo 😬
Just drinking the last glass or two this evening.

Porridgeislife · 30/09/2023 21:32

This is a bit of a strange question, but does anyone else get physical side effects from a carby meal?

Does anyone else get raised or slightly light headed after a carby meal? One reason I like low carb is that I feel full and “settled”/well after a meal.

I don’t have diabetes nor am I pre-diabetic as I just had my annual h1bac test. But for going on 10 years I’ve had a notable rise in heart rate after meals. Various nutritionists opined it was diary/egg/yeast intolerance and at various points I’ve cut these out to no effect. It was only a year or so ago that I realised it didn’t happen with low carb meals.

venusandmars · 30/09/2023 22:16

Still on holiday but have managed better over the past days. Tonight my 'starter' was olives. My main was a starter portion of prawns with spicy and garlic! I added a side of some green veg thing. I ate 2 chips stolen from dh.

Rogue1001MNer · 01/10/2023 08:12

That looks lovely @venusandmars

What was your takeaway in the end @RooRooCooChoo?

@Porridgeislife I definitely feel less bloated on this WOE.

Today is my weigh day.
Very distressed as I seem to have gained 3lb. I thought maybe the scales were just in a different place after cleaning the floor (low tech scales, slightly uneven floor, maybe), but my measurements are pretty similar to last week.
Gutted

And I genuinely can't see why.
B has been ffgy and cream all week
Lunches left over dinner
Dinners all within guidelines. Perhaps too much processed meat (bacon a couple of times in an otherwise vegetarian meal. Chorizo a couple of times, eg on the cauliflower-base pizza). I ate out Thursday but had a no bun burger with no chips n extra salad.
My ONLY concession to BC lite has been a few raspberries. Maybe half a punnet over 3 days.
I've snacked generally less because I haven't needed it.
I haven't done enough exercise. And 2 days I struggled to drink enough water, but 2 days I over-drank, so I hoped that would balance out.
I can't see how I've put on 3lb. I don't get it and I'm gutted.
My clothes are fitting better and I even had 2 "have you lost weight?" comments last week.

I just don't see how this can have happened

BIWI · 01/10/2023 09:15

Well, firstly, we are in the week 3 doldrums - and I did point out that it's not unusual for weight loss to stop, or even reverse.

However ...

Perhaps dairy is an issue for you? Especially if you've been having it every day.

It could be, for you, that it's about tweaking - you haven't drunk enough water, you've eaten a fair bit of processed meat.

The exercise doesn't matter, so don't worry about that.

Have you been eating plenty of fat? And veg/salad?

But I'd also draw your attention to the last bit of your post:

My clothes are fitting better and I even had 2 "have you lost weight?" comments last week.

So it's working! How your clothes fit and how you look are much better ways to measure your progress.

I know it's disheartening when the scales don't behave, but you need to take a longer term perspective here.

RooRooCooChoo · 01/10/2023 10:19

I went for the Thai in the end as my husband isn't a fan, whereas I never have trouble convincing him of the wisdom of having a steak for dinner. I also had a few glasses of champagne, shamelessly drawing on its LC benefits to justify the indulgence Grin.

Papers with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon before the family descend. I am a whole new woman!

Good luck all those weighing today and tomorrow. I'm dreading a weight slump, but have fortified myself.

Rogue1001MNer · 01/10/2023 10:39

I hear you @BIWI
And I do read and heed your posts, honest.

I just thought the slump might not affect me because bar around a dozen raspberries, I've stuck rigidly to strict BC rules.
So to gain was a shocker. Especially as it feels as though its all going the right way.

You might be right about dairy. I'm eating cheese most days. Plus now having ffgy for breakfast instead of eggs, because I got sick of eggs

I'll look at cutting back on the cheese and see if it helps 🥲🥲🥲

BIWI · 01/10/2023 10:53

just thought the slump might not affect me because bar around a dozen raspberries, I've stuck rigidly to strict BC rules.

Ah yes. But it's week 3 ...

OP posts:
fruitstick · 01/10/2023 10:57

I back from holiday. I did my best to stick to low carb and to be honest it was quite easy in Greece.

But I fear booze will have been my undoing. So I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's weigh in.

But also I'm glad I'd already lost 10lbs before I went, rather than waited until I got back to start.

Back on strict boot camp today with scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Rogue1001MNer · 01/10/2023 11:11

Can I list my meals for last week to see if anyone can spot where I'm going wrong?
B each day around 3 dessert spoons of ffgy and a splosh of double cream

Snacks - tomatoes, celery and cucumber noshed throughout the day

Dinner (which is the next day's lunch):
M salad w chorizo and hb egg

T cauliflower cheese with added broccoli and bacon and salad with a sharp vinegar dressing as a side

W cauliflower-base pizza with quite a lot of meats as topping - chorizo, lardons, pancetta, buttered spinach as a side. Also snacked on a pot of cottage cheese because I work a long day on Wednesdays

T ate out, naked cheeseburger w bacon and salad

F more cauliflower cheese from freezer for lunch, dinner was a kind of coleslaw with lots of cabbage and belly pork in thai-type spice/dressing

S was an odd day. Ate nothing bar a bit of parmesan all day, aubergine parmigiana for dinner w a green salad, vinaigrette dressing

A few raspberries Thursday and Friday.

Nothing else at all

BIWI · 01/10/2023 11:17

@Rogue1001MNer

You need to stop thinking like this!

Can I list my meals for last week to see if anyone can spot where I'm going wrong?

You aren't going wrong! You've said that your clothes are fitting better and people have noticed you've lost weight.

We are only in week 3

OP posts:
ChimneyPot · 01/10/2023 11:17

@Rogue1001MNer are you already within a healthy bmi range. I am far from being an expert but I found that once I got a bit within the healthy range I had to watch portion sizes and even calories.

Also had you had any water before you weighed? I try to start my day with 1-1.5 litres of water and it adds at least 3lbs.
