Summer '23 Boot Camp, Week 7: only 2 weeks to go

Good morning Campers! FlowersSmile

So we are on to the home straight with only two weeks to go before the end of this Bootcamp. Still time to shed a pesky pound or two, especially if you're super strict. Perhaps for these last two weeks you might consider doing full-on Bootcamp, rather than Bootcamp Light?

@FinallyHere will be along shortly to link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

We might into the final fortnight but we'll still be around afterwards for support or to continue following the Rules If you've only just started, we’re still be here to advise. Smile

It’s 6 weeks tomorrow before I’m off on holiday - so that will help focus me Wink

Still not feeling a 100% Sad so I suspect it will be day vegging in front of the TV.

@BIWI - ooh, yes eggs in some sort of devilled way could be good.

The muffins have butter in them - would they work with coconut oil? I might need to try tomorrow - then we could have that with some kind of indian spiced veg and chutney..

BIWI · 02/08/2023 23:18

Butter doesn't count as dairy though

HappiDaze · 03/08/2023 00:22

Low car, diary free and meat free

Ok so some kind of prawn 🍤 combo with lime, mayo, avocado 🥑 like a deconstructed prawn cocktail but on little sticks so easy to eat

HappiDaze · 03/08/2023 00:25

Scampi or

prawn and or veggie wontons / dumplings or mini spring rolls for the non low carbers maybe with a dipping sauce of soy and lime juice and sweet chilli sauce

Goodiewhemper · 03/08/2023 05:56

@vevenusandmars thanks - I didn't notice the sugars. I need to be more savvy regarding reading labels. We are going to holidays the week after next and we go to the same island every year where we walk, hike, swim and read a lot. We start every day with a big pot of porridge with grated apple and cinnamon. I told her the this year I would have to avoid our breakfast and when she saw this she thought it would be a good alternative. She is 17 and very sweet and thoughtful.
@BIWI I agree. It is very misleading. I think she bought this in H&B. It is easy to be swayed by clever marketing and shelf placement. Glad I checked here before it passed my lips

Yesterday I tried to reduce my overall dairy. I started my morning with a coffee at 5 and had another one at 8.30. Small splash of cream in both.
B - green smoothie with avocado, cucumber, spinach, almond milk and protein powder and a small slice of cream cheese egg bread.
L - left over sausage with truffle and a small slice of keto bread.
Sauteed courgette with butter (leftovers)
D - baked salmon with asparagus, cooked with olive oil and lemon and dressed with butter and parsley. Sure serving of chicory cooked with olive oil.
Cup of mint chocj herbal tea.

I have started today with my first coffee and need to get ready for a busy day in work.
Breakfast will be the same as yesterday.
For lunch I am having a chicken thigh with pepperonata and dinner will be beef stroganoff with cauliflower rice for me and regular rice for the rest of the family.

I have a friend who is a big keto fan and she has suggested I try bulletproof coffee (coffee blended with butter) as an alternative to coffee with cream. Thoughts?

Have a great day everyone.

Goodiewhemper · 03/08/2023 05:58

Oops I also had half an avocado with three cherry tomatoes and olive oil and basil with my lunch yesterday Can't forget my veg (or fruit in this case)!

BIWI · 03/08/2023 06:56

We generally don't recommend bulletproof coffee, @Goodiewhemper - if you're getting enough fat in the rest of your diet, through real food, you shouldn't need it. It's a bit empty nutritionally.

BIWI · 03/08/2023 07:02

So I did a bit of searching yesterday, trying to see if there's a definitive number of carbs for a keto diet, as opposed to a low carb one - and the answer seems to be that there isn't a definitive one.

The Diet Doctor have keto as 20-50g carbs per day, preferably under 20g. Whereas a low carb diet can be anything under around 100g.

But both terms seem to be used interchangeably, which is a bit confusing, to say the least. Probably just as well that we don't count them on Bootcamp!

ItsAsIfWeWereThere · 03/08/2023 07:27

I really struggled yesterday and I’m not quite sure why. I totally overate - was the closest I’ve been to binging since being on this WOE. It was LCHF friendly food, which I guess is one ok thing - but was mindless and self destructive. I weighed myself this morning and am unsurprisingly up on Mondays weight. I’m hoping this will kick me into a better mindset today.

I am going on holiday today - which may or may not help things! Self catering and in this country so at least I know how to navigate supermarkets and menus. I need to up my water. I suspect this was one of the things that went wrong yesterday.

BIWI · 03/08/2023 07:30

Be kind to yourself @ItsAsIfWeWereThere - you didn't fall face first into a place of pasta, or the biscuit tin!

Were you hungry? Have you been eating enough - or enough fat/protein?

Don't beat yourself up about it. The danger with that is it can lead to a serious case of the 'fuckits' - especially if you're on holiday!

Have a good time.

BIWI · 03/08/2023 07:30

place? Plate, obviously!

TheOnlyMrsW · 03/08/2023 07:33

I'm paying for my weekend in more ways than one - still haven't got all of the flipping washing dry and scales have stalled, although I feel like I've done ok to STS and not gain so koko. In good news I've found my measurements from this time last year and done a botch job with DH's industrial tape measure and it looks like I've lost 4" off my waist and 4.5" off my hips 🎉🎉🎉. Good job as I'm about to start the annual trying on of holiday clothes (inc swimwear) which normally leaves me sweating and depressed, 🤞 it's a better experience this year.......
Slight change yesterday as I ended up having an omelette with mushrooms and spinach late morning and then spag bol for tea with slices of courgette pan-fried instead of pasta.

Today will be a bit ad-hoc as taking Ddad for his cataracts this morning and not sure how long we'll be there........... planning to have ffgy at home and plenty of water, then possibly a salad when get home with leftover roast pork. Dinner is chicken goujon wraps with wedges for the carbies, and roast veg for me!!!!!!

@prettybird when Dmum passed away earlier this year I think I subsisted on coffee, toast and wine for about a month........be kind to yourself x

LadyBird1973 · 03/08/2023 07:38

@prettybird lovely to 'see' you here Flowers

EvenlyDetermined · 03/08/2023 07:38

I'm still finding I'm snacking too much, although on suitable things its mainly cheese and meat based snacks and I should be looking to break the habit. Its hard though, I sometimes still find my meals unsatisfying without the carb portion. I'm also too reliant on cheese for my fat as I don't generally like veg cooked in butter or oil (I prefer them lightly steamed and plain) and there's only so much mayo I can eat.

BIWI · 03/08/2023 07:42

@EvenlyDetermined can you give me an example of a typical day's food for you? Or a few days' worth? I might be able to help you with ideas about increasing your fat.

Are you really hungry, and needing to snack, or is it just 'mouth boredom' as someone beautifully phrased it on another Bootcamp?

LadyBird1973 · 03/08/2023 07:42

@Goodiewhemper re bullet prof coffee, I was thinking of buying MCT powder to add to coffee instead of cream (in an attempt to cut down on dairy). It's MCT from coconut and grass fed butter. Expensive though.
What do you all think as a solution to having cream?
Failing that I was just going to try some sugar free almond milk , although this won't add anything in terms of feeling full.

ItsAsIfWeWereThere · 03/08/2023 07:47

Thanks @BIWI . I’m definitely getting enough fat and protein and I wasn’t hungry. I was probably thirsty though. Ive always been crap at drinking enough water and after a good start to boot camp I know my efforts are slipping. I was probably a bit bored too. These are two things I will work on! But as you’ve pointed out no biscuits or pasta was eaten - so I guess it could have been much worse.

Suxeed · 03/08/2023 07:47

Hi folks, a snack idea for a couple of people who’ve requested them - not so much the ingredients but the way they’re presented - do only 3 canapés eg cream cheese on thick slices of cucumber, mini kebabs on cocktail sticks etc but then don’t present them on separate plates. Pop them on one plate at a time, ideally a square plate, but pop them on in a chequerboard pattern, Eg line of XOY, followed by a row of OYX, then 3rd row of XOY :)

ItsAsIfWeWereThere · 03/08/2023 07:51

Oh god ‘mouth boredom’ is exactly what I get. As an ex smoker (over a decade ago) and an ex drinker (recent but doing well) ‘mouth boredom’ is definitely an enemy I know well!

Am watching creamy coffee alternatives with interest (whilst drinking a coffee with cream…😬)

bowiesmum · 03/08/2023 08:28

I'm worried I'm eating too much fat. For example breakfast this am is pouched egg x2, homemade guac, halloumi and bacon (with fat) x2?

EvenlyDetermined · 03/08/2023 08:38

I think its a mixture of mouth boredom, actual hunger and fancying something crunchy and tasty as meals all tend to be soft on this WOE.

Typical menu
Lots of water and herbal tea, no problems with that
B- hard boiled egg or egg mayo, maybe a bit of ham
L - salad with fish or meat and lots of mayo
S - FFGY (homemade) with flaxseed and blueberries
D - is where it tends to go wrong, we all come and go at different times and go out for exercise a lot in the evenings, often on the spur of the moment, which makes the logistics tricky, none of the others are attempting to lower their carbs so it does depend who is cooking (DH or teen DCs). Also the teens are fussy - one with ASD. So maybe curry with FFGY and salad, or omelette with spinach, mushrooms, cheese. But quite often its just snacks after work so I'm not too full to exercise later then more snacks when I get back.

I do find using a sippy water bottle good for mouth boredom.

BIWI · 03/08/2023 08:47

@bowiesmum why would you think that's too much fat?

Low carbing is a high fat diet.

Please have a read of some of the resources which are on the spreadsheet, which explain the science behind low carbing - and why fat is not bad for you.

BIWI · 03/08/2023 08:54

@EvenlyDetermined looks like you need to do a bit of forward planning when it comes to your evening meals - even if that means just preparing things for you and letting the rest of them sort themselves out!

Lots of snacking really won't help your blood sugar levels.

You also shouldn't need to eat before you go and do any exercise, if you're eating enough fat. Once you're fat-adapted, your body is using bodily fat for fuel, so doesn't need to be fed carbs.

If you can, have a read of this book: The Art and Science of Low Carb Performance

Not really sure about the 'not crunchy' thing though! Lots of crisp veg/leaves in a salad, for example. Vegetable accompaniments that are al dente? Crispy bacon on top of veg or salad or avocado?

bowiesmum · 03/08/2023 09:02

Thanks @BIWI. I know I'm not calorie counting and I'm not tracking anything with this diet which is what I love about it! But I can't help but think I must be eating a lot of calories!

I'm having three full meals a day like the mentioned breakfast plus snack of cheese and ham.
