Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!

BIWI · 15/01/2023 23:00

Evening all! I'm posting the week 2 chat thread this evening, as I know how keen everyone will be to post tomorrow. As I'm retired now, I no longer have to set an alarm to wake up, so I don't want to keep everyone waiting tomorrow morning to post.

I love this week. It's when we see how much people have lost, and it can be a significant amount. It can be a real leap of faith for anyone who hasn't low carbed before, and all those who really don't believe you can eat that much fat and still lose weight!

I'm really hoping that you've all had a good first week, and that your commitment 'to the cause' has been rewarded with a good result - be that on the scales, with your tape measure, or the currently-too-tight clothes that you've been trying on.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope very much that you've had a good first week, and that you're feeling supermotivated for the rest of Bootcamp.

However - if you haven't lost, or you have even gained, please don't be downhearted. We're all different, and there may be lots of reasons why this is the case for you. It's also really important to note that it's not a competition. We all lose at different rates - plus, anyone who is bigger will lose more/faster than someone who is smaller.

Hopefully there are other benefits to this WOE that will keep you on track - at the very least, I hope that you have been enjoying the food, and that you don't feel deprived, like you would be on a low calorie/fat diet.

I can’t get past green yoghurt! What the heck??
Need to google remoulade.
Im feeling bunged up, so still need to up the veg I think. I’ve not lost anything - started at 149, dropped to 148 first week, and now bouncing between the two. Im not getting too frustrated but will up the veg, cut back on cream & cheese & on Monday return to intermittent fasting. Im having quite a lot of dairy and there’s quite a bit planned this weekend so need a new plan next week.

ditavonteesed · 20/01/2023 07:09

So having avoided celeriac all this time I realised in sainsburys yesterday that celeriac isn't what I though it was, fennel is what I though celeriac was. So what the hell is celeriac? I looked around but I couldn't find it (maybe because I didn't know what I was looking for). Maybe I'll try it after all.

Greatly · 20/01/2023 07:24

I couldn't find celeriac in Tescos yesterday,it wasn't with the root veg. Finally found it in a big display at the end of the aisle with special offer stuff. 1.25 each which still seems expensive.

Baystard · 20/01/2023 07:48

@Linnet I've newly discovered that milk makes me quite bloated clotted cream, double cream and cheese is fine though. I do like a cup of tea with a splash of milk but even a small amount causes me to bloat, I assume the lactose.

Someone else said upthread about keto rash (sorry I'm on my phone and can't find it again). I had this a couple of bootcamps ago but I just used over the counter bite and sting cream on the worse bits (they were quite small) and it went away never to return. At the time I though/assumed it was related to LC diet but it cleared up spontaneously and since then I've been LC and it didn't come back. I'm trying to think if there was something I was eating, that I wasn't used to, that was doing it.

@ditavonteesed it looks like a very anaemic and nobbly swede...

Jollyholibobs · 20/01/2023 07:52

Morning all. Haven’t posted much as have struggled to keep up with the thread but just caught up. Loving all the positive chat, NSV’s and losses. Good to hear so many saying they are sleeping better. Currently on coach going to Luton airport for ski weekend. Ski trousers which barely got over my hips now do up 😊 but by the next trip in early March I want them to be more comfortable.
I am optimistic that I will easily maintain this WOE while away based on previous trips to the same place. Restaurants in France very accommodating with low carb substitutions- fab salads.

another vote for remoulade here. Delicious and no digestive problems either.

looks a bit like a swede but rougher and browner on the outside with bits of white - similar texture to a hessian sack on its skin

it usually pops up in odd places, often found by the swedes in Morrisons

FinallyHere · 20/01/2023 08:44

Depending on where you buy it, celeriac can look like the attached which has been cleaned up a bit.

From a market etc it would be much knobblier and have quite strong roots protruding

Still my top favourite vegetable, especially in remoulade and now also cut into 'chips' and roasted in the air fryer, served with delouis mayo with added hot smoked paprika.

A dear friend found me jars of celeriac remoulade to give as a hostess present in place of her usual chocolates (lovely friend who also said nothing crass about my newly svelte figure ) Sadly the carbs are over 11g/100g It's only raw celeriac in the jar so the 'liquid' must contain sugar. Who would do that & Why ???

Morning everyone, hope you’re all keeping warm, despite our shrinking bodies. Scales are still on a downward trajectory here, so I am happy today.

I’ve got a PT session later this morning so just shovelled down some Greek yog and cream. Lunch will be something eggy and tea is meatballs in Tom sauce with some kind of veg. All a bit vague today but sure it will come together eventually!

ditavonteesed · 20/01/2023 08:49

Ewww I thought no I'll stick with my original no, looks gross. Thanks for the pics. 😂

SpottyBumPony · 20/01/2023 08:49

Morning,I've cancelled yoga tonight as I tweaked my back earlier in the week. Its pretty much better now but I don't want to over stretch.

FFGY
Greek salad with turkey burgers, feta and oily dressing
Something eggs, maybe cminside out Omelette with spinach and mushrooms.

Skiphopbump · 20/01/2023 08:50

A few years ago Waitrose sold celeriac rice and it was so good and easy to prepare (microwave in packet). Has anyone one seen it anywhere recently?

Nugg · 20/01/2023 08:53

Morning Everyone

Great reading your menus and getting ideas and also a relief to see why my tummy is so unhappy - celeriac!

I have never eaten it before this week and I love it, mashed wasnt so keen so may try with added cheese and parsley, chips divine - I have deep fried these, assumed ok? also a huge fan of shredded cabbage fried in butter, s&p and chilli flakes, thats been a firm side for almost every meal!

I am still sleeping better, my skin is looking so much fresher but a bit low in mood this week for some reason and have really craved a cream cracker with cheese of all things!

I started on 4/1 but still keeping to the bootcamp dates so I don't lose track of where we are foodwise.

Still 15 days til holiday time and I am determined to keep at it. I am definitely looking much better nekkid already! So wish I had been weighed on my first day but happy to be trimmer neverthless!

One thing I have barely missed, and I admit I had a glass or two of wine or g&t most nights prior to this, is alcohol! Am sure while away with my friend I will partake but will stick to G&T as so LC compared to wine! Do wonder if I might find it too sweet tho.

Greatly · 20/01/2023 08:59

I'm going to the butcher later.
I went at Christmas to get an emergency chicken (long story) and it was so delicious that I've stopped buying it from the supermarket. Getting a chicken for Sunday but drawing a blank for tonight ‐ thinking maybe burgers and bolognaise for Saturday. Boring but easy.

Greatly · 20/01/2023 09:05

I had a really low point last weekend. I feel so much better now. Wondering if it was some sort of sugar withdrawal as I ate quite a lot of sugar over Christmas and beforehand. I've had a really awful few months with family deaths and severe illness which meant I had to be 'the strong one' while everyone around me fell apart. I'm feeling so much happier and more positive today (inevitable that something else major happens now...)

So - shopping today with all low carb stuff plus a few sweet treats for dd and dh. I can easily ignore those. The only thing I find difficult is lovely sourdough bread that dd likes. Bread and butter is my nemesis.

prettybird · 20/01/2023 09:24

@Greatly - I make fabulous (and beautiful looking) sourdough bread if I say so myself Wink for dh and ds - about a loaf every 4 days Shock. I'll not post up a picture but I won a competition at a local cafe, with the comment from the judge saying that it wasn't "style over substance" and that the taste and texture delivered as much as the appearance part of the secret is caraway seeds Grin

Because I make it so often I don't feel the need to "try" it Halo - but I am looking forward to having the very occasional slice when I've reached target as part of maintenance Smile

Oh wow
I have deliberately never made it. I could eat a whole loaf. I'm terrible with lovely bread.

prettybird · 20/01/2023 09:29

Funnily enough, making it so often makes it easier to resist Confused. I know it's not a one-off and that there will always be another chance a long time in the future Halo to have some Grin

Jenasaurus · 20/01/2023 10:23

DontGetEvenGetEverything · 20/01/2023 02:19

@Jenasaurus that is a brilliant result with your metabolic age drop!! I'm yet to get back into my gym routine post Christmas / wedding / New Year celebrations, this helps motivate me.

I'm enjoying not looking quite so jowl-ey. I was putting sunscreen on this morning and thought, Oh, what a pretty neck!

I need to join a gym, the only think I enjoy apart from walking and dancing is swimming and the cost of a gym with a pool is a lot more than the local (not so local to me) leisure centre. I will look to see if there are any offering NHS discounts as a Blue Light Worker they may have some January deals.

My colleagues will get a nice surprise later today, I am dropping off several boxes of unopened chocolates from Christmas for them to enjoy. Its made me realise it was mainly me that ate them in the past as they are all untouched now I no longer eat chocolate. Although when I was on low carb rather than the strict bootcamp 2 week journey, I did have 85% dark chocolate occassionally

BIWI · 20/01/2023 10:24

Morning all! Incoming ...

... Shock at your microwave fire @QforCucumber! Sounds like it must have been a typo in that recipe, because 10 minutes in the microwave for anything seems a lot!

I'm really not sure about green yoghurt @Gingerwarthog, but halloumi is definitely better than honey Grin and very well done for resisting the wine 😇

@Linnet if you're feeling bloated, then the usual advice is to drink (yet) more water. I don't know how much you should be drinking, as you haven't entered your weight on the spreadsheet, but make sure you've checked how much you should be drinking, (rule 6), and maybe add another half litre till it's resolved?

However ...

... it could be that you're not eating enough veg/salad, so you're not getting enough fibre in your diet - there's a lot of salad in your meals (which is lovely, obviously), but perhaps you need to add more fibrous veg in there, like cabbage or broccoli, for example. Rule no 4 is about getting your carbs mainly from veg/salad, so this is really important.

That's a real result @Hopeislost - definitely a 'win win'!

@DontGetEvenGetEverything envious of the sunscreen and the neck.

@Greatly I really don't think that's expensive - it's such a great, versatile vegetable. And I can guarantee it's one vegetable that never gets chucked out in this house. If you've never tried it, also you @ditavonteesed, I really, really recommend it. Just ignore its ugly appearance - inside it's a thing of beauty!

And I'm glad you're feeling better - sounds like it might have been carb flu.

@Baystard, keto rash is a known - albeit fairly unusual - side effect of low carbing. If you do suffer from it, best advice is to up your carbs slightly and that should take care of it. It is a sign that you're going TOO low with the carbs.

I've never seen celeriac rice @Skiphopbump (I'm mainly an Aldi/Sainsbury's shopper), but Waitrose did used to/may still sell frozen diced celeriac, which was a brilliant thing to have in the freezer. I'm off to Waitrose today, for some specific bits and pieces, so I'll check when I'm there if they still have it.

@Nugg re celeriac:

Re the mash, try adding some leeks, that you've sautéed in butter, to the boiled celeriac, and then mash together. It makes it more like the texture of mashed potato.

And why wouldn't deep fried celeriac be OK?! More importantly, did it work? I have a recently-acquired deep-fat fryer and am very short of things that are low carb to cook in it, so would be worth digging it out for that.

Well done on the alcohol front. I don't think you'll find a g&t too sweet, as tonic is pretty bitter. Just make sure that you're sticking to a low calorie one if you can. Otherwise you'll just be mainlining sugar, even if the tonic is bitter! Also, be careful of the premium tonic waters - their light versions still seem to contain sugar, and their full sugar ones can be more carby than Schweppes (because Schweppes use sweeteners as well as sugar)

@DontGetEvenGetEverything I relate to the Jowly thing too, over the pandemic to my shame I got on the TikTok trend and had groups of teenagers calling me cheeky Jenna, in every comment section, then I realise they were referencing my fat face! However, I now have a much slimmer face but my neck looks a lot older, cant win can you :)

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 10:32

Morning everyone! 🌺🌸🌼

I’m another one who can wholly recommend celeriac remoulade - one of my favourite salads! It’s really lovely as an accompaniment to leftover rare roast beef.

Thankfully never suffered with after effects from it...but I don’t tend to eat huge amounts.

Strangely I’ve also been very bloated this time which is highly unusual for me. In my case it’s probably at least in part due to lack of water, as I’m getting plenty of fat and fibre.

I’ve got a kettle bell hanging around (used to be heavily into gym/training) so I’ll start doing a little routine several mornings a week. We do go for long walks up and down hills a few times a week so I do move quite a bit already which is good.

@Greatly Sorry that things have been so rough. I, too, absolutely adore bread. In fact so far it’s been what triggers a downfall every time when I’ve had extended holidays from LC. I really can’t afford to do that anymore for my long-term health’s sake so I’ve had to accept that I’ll just not be able to have any. My DH makes the most wonderful ciabatta and I’m definitely sad to miss out!

@prettybird I’d love to see a photo of the bread! I make a great mixed flour and rye bread with caraway seeds.

@Jollyholibobs enjoy the skiing! Congrats on the ski trousers!

@Jenasaurus had meant to say, but clearly forgot, that’s brilliant on cutting your metabolic age!

@ditavonteesed Ah give it a go! It’s worth at least one taste as it’s so versatile for this WOE and most people find it quite delicious. Don’t judge it by its knobbly appearance...🙂

OldandTired66 · 20/01/2023 10:51

Dear @BIWI, I must confess to two glasses of champagne last night. Unlikely to have any more alcohol for about a month so please forgive my lapse. Back on the straight and narrow with boiled egg for breakfast. Out for lunch but menu will have plenty of low carb options, dinner is Cod with celeriac since everyone is recommending. I've never had it before so will peruse all the recipes. Tesco delivery due so will be stocked up with cream and cheese for the weekend.

MaryDoll84 · 20/01/2023 10:55

Morning all! @Greatly Sorry to hear you've been having such a rough time recently but pleased you are starting to feel a bit better. I always turn to comfort food in times of emotional turmoil so hats off to you for sticking to plan.

I'm meeting my dad this afternoon as it's his birthday tomorrow. Normally I'd have a couple of glasses of wine but I'll try to stick to diet coke or slimline tonic.
B: cheese and spinach omelette
L: prawn and avocado cocktail(lots of mayo)
D: bolognese over shredded buttered cabbage with parmesan

prettybird · 20/01/2023 10:57

I'll brave @BIWI's big stick Shock and post up a picture @TangledWebOfDeception Grin

Dh prefers white bread so it's almost all white bread flour - although I do use about 10+g of wholemeal rye flour in the starter per 600g loaf.

Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!
Jenasaurus · 20/01/2023 10:58

@TangledWebOfDeception - Thank you, I feel more like 100 today though! So cold, sitting all wrapped up in a heated throw!

Can I ask is celeriac a similar taste to celery, I am not a fan of that flavour but as everyone is rating this roulade I am tempted to try it.

Had to force myself to eat breakfast this morning as have toothache and its the sort of pain if you have hot or cold makes you go ooouch! I had a small pot of Greek yoghurt so I could take some aspirin as not meant to have on an empty stomach.

I am being taunted by the adverts on the right hand side, normally its clothing which is fine but today its this!
