Week 3 - Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp - Bootcamp Light or not?

BIWI · 30/01/2022 22:46

So now you have several choices:

  • move on to Bootcamp Light for the next 6 weeks, which means allowing nuts/seeds, fruit and alcohol all in moderation!
  • a hybrid, where you do Bootcamp during the week, but relax and follow Bootcamp Light at the weekend
  • stay on Bootcamp, if it's suiting you

Bear in mind that weeks 3 and 4 (and sometimes 5) are infamous for seeing little or no weight loss - indeed sometimes you may see a gain.

Whatever you decide, here's the spreadsheet for you to declare all!

I hope very much that you will see good results from the last two weeks (or the last 3 or 4 weeks, depending on when you started!)

And now this week's challenge!

Like me I'm betting you all have several cookbooks that you rarely use. Go and find one that you haven't used for ages and choose a recipe that is or could be low carb and post it here.

You may have to change some of the ingredients, but that's fine! Let's all look for something that inspires us to cook something new/different.

Here's to a successful week 3 Flowers

I had guests round who ordered a giant delicious artisanal pizza and drank wine and I made a fish pie with mash etc for my son BUT i had grilled salmon with crispy skin and I made my first shoogled sprouts and it was a delicious buttery fatty perfect meal and even though i could see the pizza would be good I had no craving for it at all. Felt so good. Can't say I didn't fancy the wine but I've had a few drinks here and there over the past weeks and it's alway felt really unpleasant even after a small amount so I actually listened to my body for once. Hurrah.

I also made a delicious sausage and cabbage paprika soup for lunch in the Instant Pot. Does anyone else have one, or a pressure cooker?

As always, this thread is super helpful and fun and funny and I feel huge affection for everyone on it Smile

Jezzballs2000 · 01/02/2022 19:57

@missfliss sorry you feel rubbish. Tomorrow IS another day x

ShangPie · 01/02/2022 20:14

NSV - I am happily munching on my first ever batch of kale chips! Definitely hits the spot for a salty crunchy snack, super easy to make as well.

Just pop a thin layer of chopped kale in a roasting pan with some oil and salt, then bung in a cool oven (about 150C) for 7-10 mins. I threw them in as the oven was cooling down from dinner so no extra energy needed.

Those need some Parmesan @ShangPie

Wilkolampshade · 01/02/2022 20:55

@stayathomegardener oh my god, that looks delish, But at 4.1g per 100g it's at the top of the range carb-wise... I think more problematic are the artificial sweeteners as there is some evidence they cause cephalic phase insulin release leading to a small rise in insulin levels. They're not great for gut bacteria too.
Mind you, it'd mainly be a problem for me because I'd have to eat the lot.

BaconOmelette · 01/02/2022 21:03

We’ll done @Jezzballs2000 that’s good resisting. I do love salmon though. 😄

Good day here today, DP has made some utterly fabulous waffles in his new waffle making gadget and they taste almost like a cheese toastie…

2 eggs
140g mozzarella (grated)
handful of cheddar (grated)
2 tsps of almond flour
1/3 tin of corned beef
Sprinkle of Parmesan

Mix it all up and cook in a waffle maker until golden.

What are people’s thoughts on konjac noodles / rice? We had some of the ‘rice’ today and it was pretty good. Stir fried it with eggs and soy sauce, and then served with chicken and loads of veg. Are these ok to use on a semi-regular basis (maybe once a week?)

BIWI · 01/02/2022 21:11

@stayathomegardener

I'm sorry but that really doesn't look like good Bootcamp food Sad

It's heavily processed, and also has artificial sweeteners as well as sugar.

Remember:

  • most of your carbs should be coming from veg and salad
  • we're avoiding sweet things, so that we can retrain our taste buds and break the hold that sugar has over us
  • we're also avoiding artificial and processed foods.

Sorry!

@stayathomegardener the ingredients include thickener and sweetener. Plus it is low fat. That's why they add thickener to make the 'mouth feel' more creamy. You'd be better with real cream.

venusandmars · 01/02/2022 21:21

In non-boot camp news I've been ghosted by my cleaner Sad Various excuses over the past 4 weeks - inflamed eye, sick child, covid. I asked about tomorrow (hoping she was feeling better etc) and she has blocked me on all social media (or deleted her accounts, I don't really understand how all these things work). I'm more upset than I should be. She was a really great cleaner, we paid her more than her normal rate. I was kind and nice (I think).

Now I have to find someone new. And we have visitors next week, and 2 sets of visitors the following week so no slacking for dh and I

I'd always rather cook than clean.

Jezzballs2000 · 01/02/2022 21:32

@venusandmars shit! that's annoying on many levels.

BaconOmelette · 01/02/2022 21:35

That’s very annoying @venusandmars I had something similar with a lady that did our ironing. She cancelled one week because she had a broken collarbone, then was never contactable again. Deeply disappointing, now it’s a coat hanger and a spritz of crease-release and hope for the best.

stayathomegardener · 01/02/2022 21:46

Oh dear. It WAS very sweet, only had the top quarter.

Mitigating it or attempting to with my delicious breakfast Blush

BIWI · 01/02/2022 21:47

That's not nice @venusandmars. She could have done the decent thing and resigned - for whatever reason.

venusandmars · 01/02/2022 21:49

Fab breakfast @stayathomegardener

Gardeniafleur · 01/02/2022 21:51

@venusandmars that is so annoying re cleaner. Can recommend a eufy if you don’t already have one? Eases the pain.

.8 of a lb on today! Obviously a stricter than strict boot camp needs to be observed.

Yesterday: eggs with avocado and Mayo.
Baked haddock with spinach, leeks and egg. Some cocoa (made without sugar), some blueberries which were prob the weight culprit.

Today: eggs, plain yoghurt.

Fried tofu with sesame oil and dash of tamari and puréed cauliflower for dinner. Black coffee, redbush tea and 1 cocoa. Some blueberries to finish off the pack.

Will cut out the berries.

NigellaAwesome · 01/02/2022 22:06

That's so rubbish @venusandmars. I really don't get this ghosting malarkey. Even if she had just made up any excuse, at least you would know where you stand.

1WildTeaParty · 01/02/2022 22:10

@missfliss

Ugh -covid kicking my butt today. Not a huge appetite Have had

Coffee and almond milk
Small amount leftover roast chicken and mayonnaise with hardboiled eggs (2) and an avocado
Cheeseburger pie with tomato salad
Greek yoghurt with 1 tbsp ground flax and 5 walnut halves

I'm so tired and achey from covid though

Sorry about the covid - that is a great menu though.
prettybird · 01/02/2022 22:11

@stayathomegardener Proper Icelandic Skyr is lovely: high protein although relatively low in fat and no additives Not sure it's available in the UK though Sad

Had a lovely supper tonight of (HFLC Wink) cauliflower cheese Smile - but we did also open a bottle of wine to celebrate having completed our proof reading of ds' dissertation (on the use of Memes as social protest in China with particular reference to Winnie-the-Pooh) Blush. One final sleep/check on it before he submits it tomorrow (deadline is Thursday)

APerfectlyGoodName · 01/02/2022 22:33

Hi all. Lots of non plain sailing on the thread and that is my story too. I was 170 last Monday. Then 168 and below later last week. Yippee. Then 170 again Sunday and Monday. I logged 168 as I had been below it but I'm still 170 this am.
It's been a busy few days workwise. DH away with work, so I'm taxi also by myself. Anyway, despite a little slippage, tomorrow is a new day.
Thanks to the poster that reminded me of chaffles. I've had an omelette every day and need a change.

StuntNun · 02/02/2022 06:00

@Jezzballs2000 sausage and paprika cabbage soup sounds lovely. I never quite know what to with my Instant Pot as my kids won't eat casseroles or stews so it mostly gets used to make yogurt, stock, and gammon.

Yesterday's food:
B: nothing as I'm a long-term intermittent faster and breakfast makes me more hungry anyway
L: lunch and dinner were backwards due to evening meetings so lunch was sirloin steak fried in butter and salad leaves with homemade vinaigrette, homemade kefir to drink, piece of cheddar for dessert.
D: four-egg omelette with a tiny baby shallot that was lurking at the bottom of the salad drawer until I hunted it down streaky bacon and half a pepper plus some Parmesan grated over the top while it was cooking. OMG it was delicious.
I also drank all the water and all the herbal tea and, quite frankly, it's amazing I don't slosh when I walk. Grin

Still going here. Not weighing in until Saturday when my period has gone as although I know any weight gain will be associated with that I will still feel demoralised if I see higher numbers. I am one of these people that really changes shape for about 8 days a month and I balloon.

Food today will involve a chicken tikka biryani (made with cauli rice and spinach) for lunch and then I am working late at an event and a buffet will be provided. I will take a buttered seriously low carb roll in my bag and fill it with the contents of a standard sandwich. If anyone is curious enough to ask what I'm doing I will say I have a gluten intolerance rather than saying I'm low carbing as I find this is easier for people to accept and causes less questioning.

Jezzballs2000 · 02/02/2022 07:24

@StuntNun that sounds like a perfect day, bravo.

The soup was: broken up sausages sautéed with oil and then chopped onion (1) and cabbage (1/2) added in to brown and then added smoked paprika. I then added a chopped courgette, 200g passata, pint of chicken stock and cooked for 10mins. After it was ready I reduced it further on the sautee function. I ate all of it and then realised I'd over done my carbs but had hit my fibre intake and also felt uncomfortably full so maybe it's 1.5 portions rather than 1!

SpottyBumPony · 02/02/2022 08:35

Yesterday was
B Yoghurt and cream
L Leftover Fajita chicken, peppers, lettuce and avocado
D A burger with celeriac chips, celeriac remoulade, salad

ShangPie · 02/02/2022 09:04

@prettybird your son’s thesis sounds like a great read!

@MrsTerryPratchett damn, I forgot an unofficial BC rule: if in doubt, add cheese! Grin

Today:
B creamy coffee, boiled egg, slice SLC toast w butter and marmite
L leftover burger w tomato salad and leafy greens
D confit duck legs w roasted fennel and buttery cabbage

And Water Water Water!

Frenchpoodle · 02/02/2022 09:06

I’ve got my online Italian cooking class tonight. Recipe is duck ragu with pappardelle. Will do mine with buttery cabbage instead of pasta - will report back if it’s a success!

Lunch is going to be bacon, avocado and spinach salad. And lots and lots of water Grin
