Week 2 - Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp Thread

As I'm doing more and more often, I'm starting the next week's thread on a Sunday evening.

This is because, since I've retired, I am no longer controlled by the tyranny of my alarm clock, and so will often sleep too late on a Monday morning for all the keen Bootcampers!

I love the first post of week 2, because for all those who are new and/or are sceptics about low carbing, this is the point at which they may realise just how effective a low carb WOE can be.

Anyway, here is the spreadsheet, and I really look forward to seeing everyone's progress

Flowers for us all

Thanks @Luckydog7 I’m definitely going to pick up some pakoras, great suggestion.

Don’t worry @Willlow so hard to keep track of these threads!

I had the confit pork belly at Cote last night. The second time in two weeks. It's absolutely delicious. It comes with savoy cabbage and I swapped out the potatoes for creamed spinach. Followed by cheese whilst my friend tucked into dessert.
I'm due on and so today has felt a bit out of control. A bit picky. I did IF for months including some extended fasts but can't even imagine being able to do that now.
B: 2sl low carb bread
L: tuna mayo, cucumber and tomatoes, porky puffs
S: Greek yoghurt and cream, dark choc buttons in TSP peanut butter
D: steak, broccoli and swede chips. Creamy cheese sauce
Thank you for all of the recipe ideas and best wishes to anyone feeling low

Oneborneverydecade · 29/01/2022 20:08

I can't view it because of the paywall but wondered if this article had anything worth adding to the recipe threads?

Full accountability I’ve had a bottle of fizzy pop just now, on Day 2 of Covid and was craving it, managed to stay on track the rest of the day though although I’ve lost my appetite a bit.
B - 2 boiled eggs mashed with butter
L - skipped
D - chicken thigh tray bake with random fridge veggies
Not enough water today, about 3/4 of what I needed but have been adding a pinch of electrolyte powder to each glass and haven’t spent all day going to toilet so that’s a win!

Please tell me it was, at least, a diet drink?

Busy day today, made cauliflower soup first thing, went to the yard to sort the horse, weeded the dead undergrowth from the garden, tidied the garage and went to the range. DM had DS when we went to the range so it was like date night for DH and me Grin.

When we picked up DS we noticed that Mum's dog had a very swollen, crusty eye so I drove them both to the vets. The vet wanted to remove the eye but Doggy is 14 so my Mum wouldn't put her through and operation and recovery Sad. But we've got eyedrops and antibiotics until Monday when they'll check her again.

B Chopped Eggs Mayo
L Cream of curry cauliflower soup
D Baked camembert, celery, pepper, roast baby gem

AThroneOfLies · 29/01/2022 20:52

@BIWI yes it was a Diet Coke, I don’t usually ever drink fizzy pop either Blush

OK ...

Not ideal but a lot better than a full sugar version!

Lovely dinner tonight (if I say so myself Blush!)

Chicken breasts (1 per person), split lengthways, with slices of mozzarella laid inside - the block version, which is drier, rather than the ball which is in liquid.

Season with salt, black pepper and dried oregano, then wrap each breast in 2 slices of Parma ham.

Mix two large spoonfuls of FF Greek yoghurt with 100g grated mature cheddar, and the juice of a lemon, with some black pepper and chilli flakes.

Drizzle a shallow oven tray with olive oil, put the wrapped chicken breasts on them, drizzle again with olive oil and more black pepper and then spoon the yoghurt/cheese mixture on top.

Bake at 175/180 (fan) for around 30 minutes - possibly 40 if the breasts are large/thick.

When I serve these, I cut each breast in two, and I only ate half, as did DS1. So plenty left over.

I served it with a mix of cauliflower, leeks, courgettes, red pepper, shallots and garlic, all roasted with olive oil, salt and pepper.

Oh, and even better - I hadn't been planning on buying any chicken when I went shopping, but the three large chicken breasts had been reduced to £2.50. So a real bargain.

That sounds delicious @BIWI - yum!

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts or done any reading around body weight "set points"? I'm still reading "Why we eat too much" and finding it all a bit depressing. I suspect my weight set point has crept up and I'm keen to bring it down (not just via diet if that's possible - I was thinking maybe building muscle via weights?). Curious if anyone on the thread has any thinking they're happy to share around this.

Happy rest of the weekend to you all.

Benvolio · 29/01/2022 23:15

@Mimosa1 yes, I think the more muscly one is helps. Damn it. Never done free weights or anything like that except as part of the odd pirates type class very sporadically. I keep meaning to start a regime of bodyweight exercises like Michael moseley is always banging on about too, but sooooo boring.

I have The Dopamine Diet too, but on kindle. Never cooked anything from it, seem quite fiddly, but it's a good inspiration as shows low carb is how Tom K lost half his bodyweight, not low cal as his subsequent books and TV series would have it.

Benvolio · 29/01/2022 23:18

The odd pirates class? Where do I sign up?
Pirates. Sorry.

@NigellaAwesome thanks for that tip re the wraps. I'm definitely going to look out for those.

Luckydog7 · 30/01/2022 06:30

I also own Toms dopamine diet book and haven't used any of the recipes! Things is about a recipe book by a professional chef is that's its trying too hard to be fancy. There wouldn't be a simple green salad in there would there. The Mosely's recipes are much simpler, maybe because the are Doctors?

I was really disappointed by Tom Kerridge's BBC doc about his diet. I was reminded of it again a couple of days ago watching Michael Moselys Doc '21days to lose a stone'. Both shows have been completed castrated by not being allowed to give their participants fat, its all 'good fats' salmon avocado etc but i just face palmed when Claire removed the fat from a piece of pork. i feel like a really key piece of information is being kept from the public but the BBC have to toe the line or be accused of being irresponsible.

Ultimately the NHS guidelines need to change and then maybe other national institutions will be free to advise something other then the low fat mantra.

Oneborneverydecade · 30/01/2022 06:30

Thank you @APerfectlyGoodName sounds delicious

Morning all! We're off out for brunch this morning so I'm looking forward to a mega fry up Grin.

Does anyone have recommendations for low carb compatible "ready meals" or similar that I can get from Tesco. We're off on a self catered holiday (4 nights) in a few weeks time and will be eating in rather than out. I'm planning treating myself to some fry ups for breakfast/brunch and some tasty picky picnic bits to take out and about for lunches or snacks. But for dinner I want stuff I can literally boil, try or stick in oven! Unlike lots of posters on this bootcamp, I don't enjoy cooking and usually on holiday we'd eat things like pizza and filled pasta that are super easy to cook. I've found a couple of prepared chicken mains that just go in the oven and I can serve with buttery frozen veg done in the microwave. Has to be Tesco I'm afraid as it's the only vaguely nearby supermarket. Also, I'll be ok having a couple of glasses of gin with soda water (dont like tonic) by then won't I?

B: coffee with almond milk (pseudo intermittent fasting. Needed the caffeine but couldn't face it black!)
L: cooked breakfast
D: a random meat from the freezer plus a random buttery frozen vegetable from the freezer Grin

pinknsparkly · 30/01/2022 07:54

That should have said that I'm looking for main dishes that I can literally just boil, fry or stick in the oven!

pinknsparkly · 30/01/2022 07:56

Or microwave I suppose (sorry, that really might horrify some of you marvellous cooks!!)

Baystard · 30/01/2022 08:06

Hi @Mimosa1 I do a little weight training but I really do mean a little! It surprises me how much difference it makes though, i do recall reading something that said that for building muscle a smaller number of reps with a heavier weight is far better than lots of reps with a lighter weight. I might be misremembering but I'm pretty sure M Mosely did something about fast exercise that concluded small bursts of intense exercise were enough to improve aerobic performance and I apply the same idea to resistance training.

I have an 8kg kettlebell and a couple of 2kg hand weights and do a few 5 minute sessions during the day, ideally when fasted as growth hormone is highest then.

I do kettlebell swings for literally a couple of sets of 20, and some squats holding the kettlebell close to my chest for another couple of sets. Then I do a variety of exercises with hand weights for a few minutes (sometimes at a different time, e.g. when waiting on kettle). I'll start introducing some ab crunches soon too but again, I use a weight and work for a few minutes rather than doing really long sets. I do some stretches before and after but in total a session is about 5 mins.

It def doesn't feel like a bodypump class but I think my progress is just as good as doing a class once a week and I'll just do 5 mins here and there.

Baystard · 30/01/2022 08:14

@pinknsparkly Daft idea but could you do lasagne for the family (Tesco do family sized ones) and just not eat the pasta layer? I'd use the excuse of being away to have some really good steak too (though Tesco not great for beef). M&S or even Lidl/Aldi tend to have better red meat IME. People often say to visit the butcher but I think you need to find the right butcher as it depends who they cater to - the one nearest us only ever has very lean meat and the fatty steaks i choose in Lidl are much nicer, but MIL butcher does wonderful old fashioned fatty beef which is always delicious.
