Morning all.

Sorry for the late posting this morning. I had a bad night but managed eventually to get to sleep and have only just woken up!

As ever, here's the link to the spreadsheet

The plan for this week is as for last week, i.e. strict Bootcamp during the week but relaxing into Bootcamp Light at the weekend (if you wish).

Hopefully by now it's becoming more of a habit to eat this way, and the urge to snack has receded, and you're finding that you're no longer hungry between meals.

And channelling @ShagMeRiggins, I hope you're remembering the WATER, WATER, WATER! As well as all the fat Grin

Here's to a good week for us all Flowers

@StuntNun and also @venusandmars your science descriptions are amazing. I'm not on my top form at the moment. I dealt with the kids earlier. Now just burst into tears. I'm tired but I know it's the virus not low carb.
If I can get through this next few days Il be OK.

H1Drangea · 11/11/2021 20:42

@Noavocado 💐passes tissues
You’ll be fine

ZiggZagg · 11/11/2021 22:20

💐 to @Noavocado and other Covid sufferers, hope you're all feeling better soon!

So today, I've come out in a rash on my face Sad not sure it's related to low carb as never had it before but I (vaguely) remember something about a keto rash? Wondered if it could be that! It's painful and itchy Sad

Dellabob123 · 12/11/2021 09:00

Sorry that’s happened to you @ZiggZagg I’ve never seen that and I’ve been doing this on and off over ten years. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

Lovely dinner last night thrown together.
Portobello and blue cheese burger with huge salad. Simple but yum and filling.

I handed in my assignment early, so going to spend my day planning some lovely LC meals for the weekend.

I have a question for the the experts @BIWI @StuntNun Smile
Is exercise the only way now to tone up the loose skin on my tummy or will the LC do it eventually? I know age and kids have a lot to do with it. But I’ve always let LC burn the fat and now I’m wondering if that’s done it’s job now and I need to boost up with Toning? I know exercise is always good regardless and I do walk daily but just need some adviceSmile

Frenchpoodle · 12/11/2021 10:14

Blue cheese burger sounds delish @Dellabob123 you are giving me inspo for the weekend. I’m also interested about toning etc, will keep an eye out for the advice.

Hope the rash clears up @ZiggZagg x

I had a cheeky weigh in this morning and another pound gone! That’s 9lbs in all after 2 1/2 weeks, so happy! This woe is definitely working for me Grin

Dellabob123 · 12/11/2021 10:25

Well done @Frenchpoodle, amazing lossSmile

TrueGrit54 · 12/11/2021 10:53

ZiggZagg can you send a photo to your GP? Our GP has an online form now (as they still aren’t seeing patients in person). I am no expert but I really don’t think it has anything to do with bootcamp. Flowers

TrueGrit54 · 12/11/2021 11:01

ZiggZagg or see a pharmacist, if it’s something like ringworm they can give you antifungal stuff over the counter.

BIWI · 12/11/2021 11:10

@ZiggZagg keto rash is a thing - see The Diet Doctor for more info but typically would be all over and not so much on your face.

Sounds more like an allergic reaction to something - but a couple of things:

  • try having more carbs today and see if that makes any difference
and
  • book an online appointment with your GP just to be on the safe side

@Dellabob123 I'm assuming you mean a "wobbly" tummy rather than loose skin. Loose skin is the result of significant amounts of weight loss and is extremely thin hanging areas of skin with no subcutaneous fat beneath. The only ways to remove/reduce loose skin is surgery or fasting - although it's more effective to do the fasting while you're losing weight rather than when you already have loose skin.

One reason for having a wobbly tummy when you're at your goal weight is being so-called "skinny fat." It's possible to be a healthy weight but still have a high body fat percentage. The photo shows the same woman at the same weight but with three different body fat percentages. If you want to go from number 1 to number 2 or 3 then you need to lose more fat and gain muscle. This is called body recompositioning. If you've never been into weight training then the easiest way to do this is to start lifting weights three times a week. For the first six months you get what's called "newbie gains" where you gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. If you already lift or you've done weight training in the past then newbie gains are less likely and you need to do cycles of bulking and cutting to get the same result.

The best way to achieve body recompositioning is using compound lifts such as barbell squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead presses etc. These lifts work multiple muscle groups at the same time so you can get big results with relatively few exercises. The StrongLifts 5x5 program only has five exercises that you can do in about 40 minutes three times a week. The disadvantage is that you need to go to a gym as it needs barbells, a bench and a squat rack. If you can't get to a gym then the next best alternative is bodyweight circuit training exercises such as the 30-Day Shred, Insanity, BodyPump, CrossFit. There are loads of different programs and most of them can be done at home with minimal equipment, or as part of a class if you need other people around for motivation.

You won't be able to increase your muscle mass with aerobic exercise such as running, swimming or cycling unless you're doing huge amounts of exercise, for example running over 20 miles per week. Even then, people who take their exercise seriously will often add in weight training as well to improve their performance. And if a wobbly tummy is your main concern, abdominal fat is the last to be lost in women so you won't get lean there until your body fat percentage is around 22% although it does depend on your frame size.

It would take three months to a year to get a visibly significant improvement in physique. The fastest way would be a serious lifting program where you rapidly increase the amount of weight you're lifting. If you can commit to a bodyweight workout three times a week and you ramp up the intensity over time, a realistic goal would be about a year to look physically much fitter and more shapely.

Even if you aren't close to your goal weight, it's well worth taking up this kind of exercise as it will mean when you do reach your goal weight you're already toned. Needless to say it's also great for your health and it feels good to be strong as it makes a big difference in daily life since everyday activities become much easier.

Dellabob123 · 12/11/2021 12:38

Amazing info @StuntNun, thanks for taking the time to reply in so much detail.

Definitely the last wobble is my tum.

I shall look into the weights. I’m not expecting to look like no. 3 pic, but just tone up the area.
Thank you Grin

venusandmars · 12/11/2021 12:45

@ZiggZagg I have rosacea and it first appeared as a general patchy rash, both itchy and sore. It's now mostly under control and when it appears it's confined to small specific areas.

Got a busy weekend - cooking for dd and dgc tonight so need to take account of non-meat eating and allergy to dairy. So most probably something with fish and veg (potatoes for the others). Meal out at friends tomorrow where one couple are bringing starters / nibbles, another doing the main, and another bringing pudding. I have no input, and they are already trying to cope with one person who is coeliac and another with a nut allergy - at least it's not likely to be pasta bake! I offered to bring a cheese course (which I'd have as an alternative to pudding), but was told that there was plenty food already. I'll just have to pick and choose what I eat, and eat enough veg to excuse my lack of pudding eating. And I'm driving, so that resolve the drinking temptation.

Friends coming here on Sunday / Monday. A seafood restaurant booked for Sunday evening (with some great options) and then lunch/brunch on Monday which will be my cabbage and leek kedgeree (with rice for guests). Maybe fried haloumi with herb and caper dressing for starter...

With all of that going on, particularly the unknown food on Saturday I need to be super careful with all my other meals. There are eggs in the fridge, mushrooms, chard, shallots, and an avocado. So some omelettes and some salads with fill in the gaps.

Wildheartsease · 12/11/2021 13:04

Will a stevia leaf count as part of my FLGV? :)

I'm not usually into sweeteners or sweet drinks , but have a stevia herb plant on my window ledge... and tried a leaf in my black coffee. It had a lovely gentling effect on the coffee (very like cream).

-Previous coffee today was with cream, but I'm trying to limit dairy.

ShagMeRiggins · 12/11/2021 16:13

H1Drangea

I’ve noticed my skin is better , not sure if it’s the extra water , extra veg or less wine , anyway who cares , it’s better !

It will be a combination of water, no less wine/alcohol, and healthy fats.

The better skin is definitely what I would call a Non-Scale Victory (NSV). Well done and keep it up!

ShagMeRiggins · 12/11/2021 16:18

@mrshoho

I can relate to everything you've described *@AthelstaneTheUnready* (Well not the chicken pie bit 😜)!

The feeling of improved all round well being and satisfaction from food is uplifting! Being able to walk past tubs of sweets and treats left out at work and not feel deprived feels empowering. I'm so grateful for this group! I have always had great success with bootcamp but it's when I've reached my goals that I start to slip back into carb overload. I'm an all or nothing personality I think.

Ah! The great Abstainer vs Moderator debate!

It’s so important to learn what you are, for weight loss, but especially in maintenance.

I’d like to suggest that an Abstainer can become a Moderator over time. Like anything else, it’s usually a matter of practice.

WATER WATER WATER!!!

Rayna37 · 12/11/2021 16:19

Started the day with scrambled eggs and checking in from my spa Sun lounger after a lunch of halloumi on leaves and an epic chicken Caesar salad...and yet again BLOWN AWAY by the things you learn on bootcamp.

@Dellabob123 thanks to your question and @StuntNun reply, which actually follows a body shape question I never got around to answering from @ShagMeRiggins recently- I am the skinny fat girl. Photo 1 could literally be me. Screenshot of my Renpho scale reading yesterday to prove it.

Don't get me wrong, weight training was always in the plan for one day (E.g. when I'm not a full time working Mum of a toddler) but I'm going to give it real consideration. I have a gym membership so no barrier there... I usually just swim but actually could maybe fit weights into a couple of evenings when I'm less keen on cardio so late in the day, plus a weekend session. A plan towards #beachbody2022 begins to take shape from the swirling mists of Mumsnet wisdom.

(Also sometimes it’s a matter of therapy/thinking, doing “deep dives” into why one needs to abstain rather than moderate, or vice versa.)

Best of luck.

ShagMeRiggins · 12/11/2021 16:27

Athelstane your post at 09.something...

You glorious bitch, you fine and leading Bootcamper, you bloody star.

Moanranger · 12/11/2021 17:28

Speaking of NSV, I have noticed a decrease in the constant nose running I have in winter. Some sort of mucus reducing effect. I am looking out for others, as I suspect this WOE is anti- inflammatory.
I just found M & S Serrano ham & chorizo bites. A nice snack to keep in my bag, emergencies only, as quite pricey

kerkyra · 12/11/2021 18:12

I cooked a beef stew, added some madras paste and served it with rice for the boys.
Then thought,oh,what shall I have with mine? Oh I know, that coleslaw needs eating up.
Was delicious ( didn't look it.No wonder I'm single eating this sort of thing!).

Does anyone else have the strangest concoctions? Yesterday was trout with roasted veg and some left over chicken fajita mixture on the side😄

Week 4 - Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp
AthelstaneTheUnready · 12/11/2021 18:47

Well thank you, Shag. I do feel very very very VERY strongly about people - particularly women - particularly women doing something positive solely for themselves - hiding their light under a bushel.

You do it. You celebrate it. And us with you.

@Moanranger, definitely. I don't snivel on this WOE. I have found if I have a day off for sugar, or wheat, I wake up with full on congestion the next morning. That's evidence enough for me.

@kerkyra, I think I'd like the mix of hot and cold there. I'm not admitting my dodgy concoctions.

Brisket and assorted veg that stewed with it for dinner. As it will be for the next 5 days, so just pretend I say this every day until Tuesday.

KateF · 12/11/2021 19:13

I definitely feel this diet has an anti-inflammatory effect. I had awful eczema on my hands and it's virtually gone.

In other news, I made the aubergine, spinach and halloumi curry from the recipe thread and it's very good! Just as well since I have quite a few portions!

H1Drangea · 12/11/2021 21:28

Oh my ! @StuntNun those photos , what a variety of body shapes

Work this morning , then a brunch of scrambled eggs
DH and I went to the pictures this afternoon
Home by 5 and made a Spag Bol type dinner with pork mince , pasta for DH and stir fried cabbage , leek and mushrooms for me

Moanranger · 12/11/2021 23:02

Another NSV - now I eat dinner around 7pm, then nothing but water/herb tea. Because of this, I am now starting to feel actual hunger in the morning. I have always wanted to shift my eating patterns, but my post-dinner snacking meant I was never hungry in the morning. I hope this becomes the norm.

venusandmars · 13/11/2021 00:26

@AthelstaneTheUnready oh yes, the snoring. I think dh would support 100% this woe to avoid the stuffy snuffly nose and snorting grunting night.
