Week 10 - Low Carb Bootcamp - sadly we're not out yet ...

BIWI · 14/06/2021 08:57

Well, this Bootcamp was designed to finish on what's become known as Freedom Day, next Monday.

Sadly it looks like that isn't to be Sad

However, I hope that the last few weeks have helped you get ready to burst out into the new world! In many ways, the extra four weeks does give us a bit more time! (Don't worry, Bootcamp will still finish with next Monday's weigh-in Wink)

Anyway, as ever, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Looks like it's going to be a glorious day - at least here Darn Sarf. I have nothing planned, and DH is out playing golf, so I shall enjoy the garden to myself, I think.

Hope we all have a good last week Flowers

Interesting reading in the Times today. A proper scientific peer-reviewed study by Dr Kara Fitzgerald. For any data geeks the full paper is HERE

It is essentially about reversing the damage caused by aging and in 8 weeks the participants (age between 50 and 72) reduced their biological markers of age by an average of 3.2 years, compared with the control group.

The diet included: 2 daily servings of dark leafy greens, a variety of mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic, 2 servings of cruciferous veg, lots of eggs, rosemary, turmeric, a handful of berries, liver, organic meat, poultry or fish, and seeds that contain omega 3 fats. The only things she recommended that are not in bootcamp are beetroot and apples (although I noticed that avocado was listed in the alternatives to apples). There was a small paragraph about what the participants avoided: alcohol, sugar and sugary foods, processed foods - all of which can accelerate biological aging - plus during the study they didn't have potatoes, grains, sweetcorn, beans or pulses. And their eating window was 7am - 7pm, so light intermittent fasting. They had to stay well hydrated and to include 2 cups of green tea.

And the author of the study says she has cream in her coffee. A woman after my own heart!

There was nothing about weight (that's not what they were trying to study) but I bet there was some significant losses amongst the trial group. But I thought that people who are worried that this way of eating might be unhealthy, or that we are not eating a 'normal' diet, this was good scientific data. So as long as we're having lots of fresh veg, and good quality unprocessed meats and foods, we're all getting younger :)

Food today:
B - bacon and egg
L - avocado and salad
D - beef stroganoff with mushrooms, green beans, spinach, cauliflower rice

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/06/2021 18:33

Sorry haven't had a chance to read posts!
L: one of those very low carb rolls, stuffed with an egg and bacon fried in butter with mayo

D: slice ham, slice cheese rolled up with sauerkraut
Pork mince, spinach, cabbage, mushrooms with garlic, a bit if chili and more mayo

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/06/2021 18:33

Oh and a tablespoon of really good extra virgin olive oil stirred in

Stokey · 19/06/2021 19:16

Thanks so much for the advice @StuntNun & @venusandmars. It's really interesting what you say about fat burning and ketone levels. I can completely see how you can start off with the best intentions and then end up just adding bits here and there. Do you need to stay in ketosis if you're maintaining rather than trying to lose more? And how do you measure your ketone levels? The Times article is interesting, so much about this WOE makes total sense. It's just retraining your body and mind.

Good luck with your big event @MrsKoala. I remember you talking about it on earlier threads, hope it goes smoothly. And great that you're at a weight, you're happy with for it. Men are annoying. DH did bootcamp with me for 4 weeks and now is doing a far less strict version (with beer and bread) but still losing a bit of weight.

venusandmars · 19/06/2021 22:06

@stokey (in general) measuring ketone levels is a bit of a waste of time and money. If you are drinking all the water then ketones in your urine will be quite dilute, so will only show up weakly. And when you're fat adapted for a long time, they show up in quite small amounts generally. One of the joys of the bootcamp way of eating is that there is no carb counting, no complicated macros to be navigated, no need to chase high levels of ketone... Just stick to the rules.

I would say that getting most of your energy from fat rather than carbs is a normal steady state. That will be a combination of fat from your food and fat from your body. In maintenance it is important to have enough (healthy) fat in your diet so you remain in a pretty much constant fat-burning mode. I don't know whether there is a clinical difference between "being in ketosis" and being fat-adapted? In more primitive times, eating leafy greens, some berries and some fish or fatty meat was the norm. Maybe one or twice a year the tribe would find a big honeycomb and gorge themselves (and thank goodness for insulin and all those regulators that allow that to happen without us dying). However, it was a rare metabolic event, not a 3, 4, 5, 6 times a day carb and sugar fest that has become the Western diet.

BestIsWest · 19/06/2021 22:32

@venusandmars I was reading that article to DH earlier. Funnily enough the only food I cannot eat is beetroot - major yuk factor.
Delicious tea of leftover chicken and lamb tikka with roasted aubergine and tstsiki. Who needs beetroot?
Just eaten some 90% dark choc but I’ve discovered it has an adverse effect on my stomach so probably shouldn’t have.

FusionChefGeoff · 20/06/2021 01:51

@venusandmars I have just tested your tribe theory with my weekend 'away' with our friendsGrinGrinGrin

Definitely found the honeycomb today! There isn't enough room on the thread for me to list everything off plan that I ate!!!

But I had always planned to have a blow out, I really really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to getting back on with 'normal' life tomorrow.

Will be interesting to see how I feel tomorrow. I'm predicting hungry, sluggish and headache.

Knackered now (obvs) so hope the kids are shattered and give us a bit of a lie in tomorrow

StuntNun · 20/06/2021 07:32

There's no need to measure ketones Stokey. Urine dipsticks are incredibly inaccurate, as Venusandmars says, drinking more water reduces your apparent ketone level. If you're serious about measuring ketones then you need to use a blood ketone meter. Also there's no need to be in ketosis to lose weight. And it isn't a case of "in ketosis" or "out of ketosis" there's a range from light ketosis to deep ketosis. It all stems from the keto diet being developed as a medical treatment for epilepsy, before effective medicines were available. If you're using diet to control seizures then you need to be much more strict about staying in ketosis, to the point that you have to control your protein intake as well as your carb intake. For those of using a low carb approach to lose weight, ketosis is irrelevant.

Low carb is not the same as keto. I think keto has become the latest diet bandwagon and often it is a less healthy approach to low carb. Low carb is similar to paleo and primal diets and we focus on food quality, eating unprocessed natural foods and lots of vegetables. Keto is about strict control of macros and often permits lots of processed foods and artificial sweeteners in everything. Also, people following a keto approach often take exogenous ketones as a nutritional supplement. The benefits of exogenous are minimal, there is some reduction in appetite but that is partly offset because you aren't converting as much of your own body fat to ketone bodies.

ouchmyfeet · 20/06/2021 08:55

Morning all, just checking in for the end of bootcamp. I haven't had my head in the game AT ALL for the last 10 weeks but have managed to lose half a stone so I'm pleased that my weight hasn't gone up!

I think I've struggled a bit with things opening up and the temptations of a social life, plus I've been through a really stressful house move. 2 weeks in and my kitchen is finally properly unpacked! There have definitely been too many takeaways.

My Sainsbury's delivery is booked for this morning, full of the right foods, and I'm back on the wagon today. Will be having celeriac mash with the lamb shanks I'm cooking my dad for Father's Day.

I now have a new target to work towards A’s have a family wedding in the diary early next year and I want to look my best for that.

I'll stick around for the between bootcamps chat, it really does help when I have the headspace to engage with it and keep up with the thread. Thanks to all who help keep it all going x

Stokey · 20/06/2021 11:05

Thanks @StuntNun and @venusandmars. I've learnt so much from these threads!

nowlook · 20/06/2021 18:03

Afternoon all,

Hideous in Portugal, obviously...

This is my Prince (DS2). He's having all my carbs 🤣 I'm having all his Cuba Libra Wink

Nice to see @Ninkanink popping in!

Week 10 - Low Carb Bootcamp - sadly we're not out yet ...
BestIsWest · 20/06/2021 20:15

How can you stand it @nowlook? Grin

FusionChefGeoff · 20/06/2021 20:40

I am very jealous @nowlook!!!

I've sort of hit the reset button today but was so tired / grumpy / meh it was difficult to get back to full speed so I've stayed very low carb but not very healthy as a stepping stone back to normal 😁

Late lunch: leftover lamb kebabs, few peppers, olives, spoon of tsatsiki
Grazing early 'dinner': lots of cheese, Mayo, cucumber, bacon eggs and cheese scramble, embarrassingly large bowl of whipped double cream as forgot I was doing strict BC today so no strawberries Blush

Meal plan in place for the rest of the week but I have another weekend away Shock so will try to prepare for NOT having a 'day off' which just results in binging. Instead, I'll try the approach that I will have crisps when available and some (GF) brownies with cream as dessert (for example) so there's specific allowances based on what I know I will enjoy but not a free for all eat aaaaaaaallllll the sugar pass Grin

FusionChefGeoff · 20/06/2021 20:41

Oh I've also had gallons of water / black coffee / herbal tea

venusandmars · 20/06/2021 22:49

Early start and long drive then had a whole series of glorious spa treatments - back with hot stones, facial, hand and arm, feet... I'm wiped out but looking smooth and youthful

Some good food options if you ignore the cumberland sausage bap from Teebay services although I did eat half a hasselback potato, then wondered why I'd bothered.

Lovely day out with dsis planned for tomorrow and Tuesday. We are meeting halfway between where we each live, haven't seen each other since last summer. It feels so strange and simultaneously so normal.

Dsis is very thin (always has been) and although we are both big salad fanatics I will feel some raised eyebrow at the amount of butter / mayonnaise / oil that I add to mine...

Food today:
B - cumberland sausage bap Blush
L - avocado, then strawberries and cream
D - chicken thigh with radish salad; cod with celeriac mash, green beans, garden veg

venusandmars · 20/06/2021 22:55

@nowlook probably best to stay there until they change the rules back again! Looks glorious and I'm very jealous.

prettybird · 20/06/2021 23:23

Wee correction @venusandmars Wink: you are looking even more smooth and youthful GrinThanks

I had a luxury day at Stobo years ago (just me, which is what I wanted: dh drove me there and then went off to, iirc, a conference in Edinburgh before coming back to pick me up). It was worth every penny for some "me" time. I still have the dressing gown that came with the package: it's getting a bit worn out, so maybe I need to treat myself again Wink

StuntNun · 21/06/2021 07:20

I love Tebay Services, VenusandMars. DH and I have been known to drive quite far out of our way to eat able to stop there! Blush

ElasticFirecracker · 21/06/2021 08:02

Hello everyone. My final week of this boot camp is 2lbs. This gives my boot camp loss as 10.9 lbs.

My weight was going up every time I weighed myself, and when I started I was 76.5kg. I'm now 71.6kg.

I had set my goal weight at 68kg, but 64kg is really my ideal weight which I had considered to be unattainable. I'm going to carry on with this, and will jump on the next boot camp whenever it is.

I've really improved my attitude to food and am taking a greater interest in cooking. I had kohl Rabi slaw for the first time yesterday which was delicious.

Thank you all!

Stokey · 21/06/2021 08:35

Final weigh-in and I have lost 2lbs which makes my total bootcamp lost to just short of a stone (13.3lbs). I'm really pleased with this and have gone under my target weight.

All my jeans are too loose and am thinking I will need to get out a pair that have been consigned to the attic.

Thanks so much to everyone on this thread and to all the people who have contributed to the recipe threads. The help and advice on here has been immense - you're all fab Flowers

MrsBertBibby · 21/06/2021 09:30

Sorry to have been so quiet.

1 pound off this week, not bad after last week's woosh. Another week to go for me.

Finally made BIWI's aubergine bake. Yum! And several more portions left for me!

BIWI · 21/06/2021 09:36
