Week 10 - Low Carb Bootcamp - sadly we're not out yet ...

BIWI · 14/06/2021 08:57

Well, this Bootcamp was designed to finish on what's become known as Freedom Day, next Monday.

Sadly it looks like that isn't to be Sad

However, I hope that the last few weeks have helped you get ready to burst out into the new world! In many ways, the extra four weeks does give us a bit more time! (Don't worry, Bootcamp will still finish with next Monday's weigh-in Wink)

Anyway, as ever, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Looks like it's going to be a glorious day - at least here Darn Sarf. I have nothing planned, and DH is out playing golf, so I shall enjoy the garden to myself, I think.

Hope we all have a good last week Flowers

Up 0.8lbs which given everything I've eaten in the last 7 days is a flipping miracle, I was expecting +4 or 5lbs at least. Could have been something to do with Sunday supper when I finally got exasperated enough with Mum telling me that she had gluten-free bread so it would be fine for me to eat to prove to her that it wasn't by agreeing to her suggestion of sandwiches and therefore thoroughly clearing out everything awful I'd eaten over the past couple of days (and hopefully putting an end to the bread argument!) I'm going to be going down every 8 weeks or so from now on, so I'm going to have to figure something out - she won't let me cook and she gets offended if I don't eat what she cooks.

Hello. There is no getting away from it I have to report a .5 kilo gain. (72.5 kilos)

This is annoying as on Saturday I weighed 71.2 and had been in the 71s all week.

We had a really small party for a family celebration. I'm so unaccustomed now to doing any entertaining it became a massive stress for me. I had planned a lots of suitable food for me.

But it started the night before, everyone had gone out except me and I was so tired with all the extra cleaning and food preparation, I decided to 'treat'* myself to a large packet of crisps and a couple of glasses of wine for dinner.

*for treat read self-sabotage.

Then on the day of the party I didn't bother with breakfast and had become very irritable with DH. And just started on the wine. I didn't think I was drinking loads, but over the whole afternoon evening must have drunk at least a whole bottle.

I managed to resist the cake, but had lots if profiteroles and pavlova.

I felt really awful yesterday. Not so much hungover but sluggish and still feel a bit that way today.

I've been feeling so much better recently and much clearer headed. I'm disappointed that I did this, but hope it will be a reminder not to do it again.

I'm back on super diligence today.

Andi2020 · 15/06/2021 09:47

@ElasticFirecracker you can't live forever without having wine or crisps so at least you have learned that too much will affect you. I haven't had a bag of crisps since start of bc but will probably have the odd bag over summer on days out.
The main thing is that we don't give up on ourselves and start doing it every day.
You see where it affected your weight and how you felt so as others said in previous threads draw a line and move on.
@VeryLittleOwl mums and their cooking Grin

thinnerlikeachickendinner · 15/06/2021 09:48

Yesterday had shoulder of lamb salted for 24 hours then roasted in a dutch oven at 160 for four hours, with celeriac, asparagus and roast garlic gravy. Eggs and smoked salmon for lunch. Beef slices with horseradish as a snack as supermarket delivered two packs (meant to be for kids lunch all week) with use by date of two days!

Lunch- more beef slices, pate and celery Dinner tonight - large green salad with mexican green goddess dressing.

Meeting up with dsis this weekend. We booked a hotel with a spa and a good restaurant, our hedonistic pleasures. First it turns out that the spa treatments are only available on one of the 3 days we are there, and at awkward times, so I can have a facial at 11am, then a hand treatment at 2pm, dsis can have a treatment at 4pm. So basically a whole day hanging around waiting, and the swimming facilities are fully booked during the between times. Now we've been contacted to say that we can't eat in the restaurant (which we had already booked for one night) but can only have the bar menu - a carb loaded selection of wraps, sandwiches, fries and puddings. We will have already eaten the only salad option at lunchtime while hanging around waiting for the spa. We could eat the lovely food in the restaurant but only if we are on a dinner bed and breakfast reservation for all 3 nights! I think the booking is about to be cancelled. Grrr... They said it was related to COVID and having to space people out in the restaurant, but the hotel is not full and looking online I see we could still book dbb for one night, and b&b for the other two. It feels like they are just trying to make money out of us, don't feel like valued customers. Plus we've got reservations at even nicer restaurants for the other 2 nights already.

Food today:
Brunch - leek and cheese omelette, coffee with cream
D - green soup, then salad

MrsBertBibby · 15/06/2021 12:37

God that's a pisstake, Venus. So irritating.

BestIsWest · 15/06/2021 12:42

How frustrating @venusandmars. So annoying.

@thinnerlikeachickendinner that lamb sounds amazing. Was it crispy? We have a family of lamb refusers here so I only get it rarely. I do occasionally sneak it past them in the form of burgers or koftas.

DH has just weighed himself announced he is on a diet. This will be interesting. No way will he low carb but I am fully expecting him to drop his 3pm Tunnocks caramel wafer and immediately lose half a stone without blinking.

Pleaseandthankyou · 15/06/2021 12:50

@venusandmars that is so disappointing. We are heading away this weekend for a few days. 5star Hotel. Really looking forward to it but I think it will be a similar situation. Lots of the facilities aren’t open. The main restaurant isn’t open. We are celebrating a big birthday so will make the best of it. We have worked for 15 months now without a break. As long as the bar is stocked and I have a good book I will be happy. I hadn’t thought about booking sessions in the pool. There are miles of walks so that will be ok.

The British hospitality industry isn't going to get back on its feet treating people like that venusandmars - that attitude of "you're so lucky to be able to stay at all" makes my blood boil- here's hoping they make more effort once you get there.
Has anyone who has the Tom Kerridge dopamine diet book got any favourite recipes? Recently bought a copy but other than some of the sweet treats (waiting til after bootcamp, but I really fancy some of them), I am struggling. I expected it to be v meaty (half my family are veggies) but it's also pretty cheffy - most recipes seem to start with the words "this takes a bit of effort to put together...". Not what I really need after a day at work. So far I have made a glorified cauliflower frittata (ho hum) and a pardon peppers dish (good but not one you'd want too often). Other recommendations (meaty or otherwise) would be welcome!

I've made the Moroccan chicken a few times. I use the slow cooker, only roughly follow the recipe (generally add extra veg like green pepper, maybe courgette) and serve with plain sautéed cauli rice not his faffy version (unless I'm going all out on a weekend). Nice though.
prettybird · 15/06/2021 15:38

@pangolinfan : The flatbread recipe is quite good. Apart from that, I think his recipes are too much faff for the result Hmm. The Boot Camp recipe threads are better Grin

Thanks - I was planning to make those - and the crackers - but agree totally re the recipe threads - I have used those a lot and love them!

pangolinfan · 15/06/2021 15:46

@Rayna37 I will try the chicken, and I have done his faffy cauliflower rice which I thought an improvement on my previous efforts - more like couscous though.

Oneborneverydecade · 15/06/2021 19:39

I've had a week or so away from the thread but struggled with my motivation so here I am. I'm currently 5lb over my lowest BC weight. I'm reading Why we eat too much and panicking that my appetite has increased to bring me back to my weight set point.

I do have a question about how much people actively avoid vegetable oils? I've realised it's in my favourite salad dressing, mayonnaise etc and will probably need to start making my own.

I've got a new part time job since I was last here. It's housekeeping in a hotel which I anticipate to be very boring but it's convenient hours and location as I have a toddler in p/t childcare and 2 at school. I'm hoping the 6hr shifts will make 20/4 fasting easier

cheeseisthebest · 15/06/2021 20:56

Does anyone know if @listenlinda is OK?

ditavonteesed · 16/06/2021 05:46

I'm 0.9 on which makes 8 lb this boot camp. Which is actually a lot better than I thought. Sometimes worth looking at the longer picture.

That really sucks with the hotel, I think places are relying on the fact that we are grateful to be there and are going to lose a lot of customers.

ditavonteesed · 16/06/2021 05:46

@Oneborneverydecade congrats on the new job.

StuntNun · 16/06/2021 06:44

Oneborneverydecade with vegetable oils it's the ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fats in your diet that causes inflammation. So if you're getting a large amount of omega-3 from animal fats and especially fish oils, then a small consumption of omega-6-rich vegetable oils isn't too bad. I only cook with olive oil and animal fats so I don't worry about e.g. rapeseed oil in mayo.

Bryonyshcmyony · 16/06/2021 08:21

I hope you don't mind me posting.

I started low carbing 2 weeks ago and have lost 7lbs. Yesterday I was starving. I also have stayed the same weight for a few days now, not unduly bothered but just wondered if this was a thing?

I normally have water and coffee with unsweetened Almond milk until 11.30/12, then yesterday had a two egg omelette with sauerkraut and cheese (which I really like!).

Was very hungry at 4 so had leftover homemade pasta sauce - chorizo, cream and tomatoes with some cauliflower rice. Then a Greek yoghurt with blueberries and walnuts.

Then I was hungry again at about 7, so had half a tin of sardines on a piece of buttered low carb bread.

Inam drinking plenty of water.

Sorry to butt in but this group seems very active.

Pleaseandthankyou · 16/06/2021 08:36

@Bryonyshcmyony welcome. I joined the threads about October time and have got to my target weight. The threads are really useful. If you have time it is worth reading through them. Some are very long. This has been a quieter bootcamp. 7lbs is brilliant for 2 weeks but it slows down. The trick is to stick to it and the weight will come off. I rarely feel hungry now. Someone more of an expert will come along but I think they will advise to up your fat content. You don’t seem to be eating a lot.

BIWI · 16/06/2021 08:36

Welcome @Bryonyshcmyony! And well done on your loss so far.

Little or no loss (sometimes even a small gain) is absolutely par for the course! Don't worry about it - you know this diet works, otherwise you wouldn't be half a stone down by now.

It's about your body transitioning into this way of eating; the large loss you've seen to date is water, as well as stored glycogen and a little bit of fat. From now on, your loss will be fat, and it will be at a much lower rate - you should expect to see a loss of 1-2lbs a week (possibly more if you have a lot to lose).

Experiencing hunger could partly be to your body getting used to this way of eating - but it's more likely (looking at your food) that you're not eating enough. In particular, not enough protein and fat. In addition, you should be drinking LOTS of water. If you have a look at Bootcamp rules (which are on the spreadsheet, linked to in my OP), rule 6 will show you how much you should be drinking.

This WOE is not about deprivation; if you're hungry, then you should eat! (As long as it's low carb, of course Wink)

prettybird · 16/06/2021 08:37

Welcome @Bryonyshcmyony Thanks

Just jump on in and you've done exactly the right thing asking for advice. Smile

One of the Rules of this WoE is to eat if you feel hungry so you did the right thing yesterday. It could just have been part of your body's keto adaption - it's still not fully learnt to use its own fat for an energy source (I like to think of it as a form of virtuous self-cannibalisation WinkShock).

But a) are you drinking all the water (the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness linked to in the OP gives guidelines for minimum amounts according to your weight) and b) were you genuinely hungry or were you just "mouth hungry" or bored? I know I'm often guilty of wanting to eat just out of habit or boredom Blush

BIWI · 16/06/2021 08:39

Sorry @Bryonyshcmyony - I should have said:

Little or no loss (sometimes even a small gain) IN WEEKS 3 & 4 is absolutely par for the course!

Bryonyshcmyony · 16/06/2021 08:53

Oh you are all amazing thank you. I do need to start looking around for some new filling recipes as I think I have got a bit bored. I am drinking water but almost certainly not enough.

I will read back over the boot amp posts for ideas.

BIWI · 16/06/2021 08:55

Also, if you go to the Low Carb Bootcamp topic, you'll see our recipe threads stickied at the top - lots of ideas there.
