Week 5 - Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp

Welcome to Week 5!

Here's the spreadsheet

Hopefully we can now put the horrible weeks 3 & 4 behind us, and get on with the serious job of shedding the pounds of fat Smile

By now, hopefully, low carbing eating should feel like it's the 'new normal', and you should be getting used to it. However, there's also the opposite danger, that you're seeing carbs creeping back into your menus.

This is a good time to take stock. Have a think about the things you've been eating over the last week and ask yourself if they are really 'in the spirit' of Bootcamp. Are you really keeping your carbs low, and focused mainly on vegetables and salad? Are you really eating enough fat? And, perhaps most importantly, are you drinking all the water?

From now on, you should see the scales move again - albeit that the weekly loss should be in the range of 1-2lbs a week (possibly more if you have a lot to lose).

I really hope that you are finding that you're settling into this WOE, and that you're enjoying the food, not feeling deprived, and are seeing the scales/tape measure reflect your commitment.

At the end of this week we will be half way through Bootcamp!

Haywire week here, with carbs, wine, smoking all going a bit loopy. Kept up the yoga (just) though. Back on it today.

Non-emotional books for me only this year - have worked through golden age christie, marsh, tey, allingham, lorac, etc - reduced to edgar wallace now... all nice, obvious, baddies get just deserts stuff. everyone where they should be, doing what you expect them to do. comforting.

also got kindle versions dombey and son from gutenberg project (fabulous site) - remember loving that was i was a teenager, so shall start soon. found some solzhenitzsyn oddly soothing earlier in lockdown - put some peoples shouty views about 'oppression' in very stark perspective.

Timetobuckup · 15/05/2021 10:42

Love the idea of Solzhenitsyn as being soothing Grin

My go to books for soothing are all the James Herriot ones. They take me right back to childhood and are my comfort blanket.

@ditavonteesed Well done on being the safe place for teens. It is definitely needed. Our house is a bit like that and as much as I moan at times about them being here and eating like locusts I love it really.

@devoncreamtea I feel like that today, the weather is going to be grim. My teen ds is hating college but has no choice really but to stay. I am so conflicted because in my head I know his happiness is more important but in reality he does have to bloody buck up and get the studying done! I really wanted some comforting carbs this morning but I know I will just be added another load of angst on myself.

I also have an assignment I have to get done and I really can't be arsed (can't think where ds gets it from Hmm

Whoever said about the new variant bringing everyone down is right. Just as things are looking hopeful again it might just be going crappy. I am not sure I can do much longer ...

Anyway happy Saturday all from cheery Sussex

Trying not to get sucked in to MN and get on with my paperwork sorting so I’m posting here so I can’t wriggle out of it.

Guess which numpty had written down the wrong time for her hair appointment? Blush

I thought it was 10am got out of bed early for me to get ready and walk across (about 6.5km - will get my steps up Wink). Turns out it was 1pm Shock She's squeezing me in at 11, so I'm having a coffee at the moment to while the time away Blush

Cut and colour: it hasn't been cut since Christmas Eve or coloured since September (but fortunately I only enhance my natural colour) so I'm looking forward to the end result. Smile

devoncreamtea · 15/05/2021 10:57

So true @Timetobuckup
Sorry to hear you are feeling rubbish too ☹️ Tough times all round. And totally agree that the horrible uncertainty of the new strain is hard - watching what they are going through over there is horrific. Horrid to feel so powerless on top of all the usual stress. We are taking masks off in school next week. I’m glad in a way because it will be easier to teach, but worried that there’s no more protection than there was before - especially since only some of us are partially vaxxed and the kids aren’t at all. I think we’ll see a rise.
Anyone else a teacher? Isn’t it a long term this time?! The kids are already knackered!

devoncreamtea · 15/05/2021 10:58

@prettybird - enjoy your haircut! What a treat! Brew

Timetobuckup · 15/05/2021 11:01

@devoncreamtea I am not a teacher but I do work in secondary supporting students with their emotional/mental health

It is a very long term, our students are removing masks next week but staff are keeping them on for a while longer. It does feel like a long term, I am really holding out that in the final half term we will be able to do all the usual fun stuff. It is normally a lovely term but obviously we missed out on all that last year.

devoncreamtea · 15/05/2021 11:22

Fingers crossed!

CrispyChickenThighs · 15/05/2021 11:35

I'm a teacher. GCSE resits, which is why work keeps going nuts at the moment!

We have the choice of keeping masks on next week if we'd like, with no judgement from others. I'll keep mine on, but I'm looking forwards to not battling with students in the classroom to tuck their noses away!

CrispyChickenThighs · 15/05/2021 11:36

And yes, this seems like a really long term. I think extra weeks keep getting added in somewhere so half term keeps moving further away! 😂

MotherBuckets · 15/05/2021 12:22

Feeling rough today, my friend thought rice was low carb... so my dinner of a bit of chicken and salad leaves not enough to soak up the gin... ended up eating a piece of bread and butter when I got home to try and soak it up a bit Blush. Previously though I would have had several slices and maybe crisps too so not too bad. Will do better today though.

@prettybird I hope your hair is lovely and swishy. I'm having mine coloured on Tuesday, first time since last March! 'Luckily ' my hair is going v grey so the blond highlights which start by my ears do blend in a bit Grin

prettybird · 15/05/2021 12:26

I have developed a malan streak (just discovered that's what they're called: my grandmother had one and my mum probably had one but had her hair coloured) at my temple which looks to all intents and purposes like a blond streak Grin

Current state of progress Wink

Andi2020 · 15/05/2021 12:34

Well this morning weighed and got to my goal off 11st hope it stays to Monday if not I'll use it as so chuffed and decided to get Dh to measure my height and I'm actually 5ft 8 and not 5ft 6 so I am good weight for my height.
@prettybird Hope your hair turned out well
I have appointed for cut was blowdry at 2
But short hair so there will be no swishing
Had a lie on this morning and read thread and few to go back to read later
Have a nice weekend everyone
Dd1 still a wee brat she is working at 4 went to her bfs house last night and had no intention of coming home before work as has uniform with her and text to collect her at 3 instead off time I organised 11.30.
Probably best as she would drive me to carbs and spoil my good dayGrin

prettybird · 15/05/2021 12:51

All these people discovered extra inches that help with their BMI calculations Grin

Oneborneverydecade · 15/05/2021 12:54

@MrsKoala that looks like my kitchen table, just can't get motivated atm

@prettybird I have a very obvious grey streak, is it only a malan streak if you're born with it?
Also curious about why your DS couldn't know that you were bathroom shopping?

@Timetobuckup I'm curious to know if your school have a policy for dealing with students after the death of a parent please? I think DS1's school have been dire but don't know whether to take it further

I hadn't made the connection but apparently my easy reading during lockdown was the Bridgerton books Blush Dickens they are not. I loved Midnight Library and Girl, Woman, Other.

I've just downloaded Hamnett, thank you

Sorry to everyone who is struggling @AthelstaneTheUnready especially

nowlook · 15/05/2021 12:55

@prettybird

All these people discovered extra inches that help with their BMI calculations Grin
All your doing! Grin I've been putting 5ft 4 into the calculator since a 2018 (ish) BC when I bought the Renpho scales- which suddenly weighed me accurately at six pounds heavier than my trusty analogues Wink

I'm not ready to go back to 5ft 3.5 yet.

Timetobuckup · 15/05/2021 13:21

@Oneborneverydecade as a school we do have a very supportive pastoral team (however I would say that because I am part of it)
Winston's wish have a school policy template on their website of how they recommend schools deal with bereavement, it might be worth having a look at that?
I think rather than a strict policy we tend to deal with each students on an individual basis. But certainly things like homework/attendance/learning breaks/trusted adult would be the bare minimum that would happen. The length of time that is left in place again would be led by the individual.

I am so sorry your son's school haven't reacted in the best way.

BestIsWest · 15/05/2021 14:19

@prettybird Mallen streak - from Catherine Cookson’s book The Mallens, also a big TV series years ago. I have one too now I’ve gone grey. Very cool at the moment.

Tickledtrout · 15/05/2021 14:56

Have had an active morning for me; a run and an open water swim. Went for low carb porridge between run and swim and SLC fried egg sandwich and green soup on return. Have drunk a lot of herbal tea and a couple of creamy decaff coffees. Feeling a bit spacey though. No hungry but could easily demolish cake and I don't gave a sweet tooth really. Will maybe hunt out the electrolyte tabs.
Second covid jab this evening- HCPC session. Hoping it doesn't hit me as hard as the first one. My joints and muscles ached for a good couple of weeks

prettybird · 15/05/2021 15:19

@Oneborneverydecade I've now discovered the correct spelling is mallen streak and that it tends to be hereditary. I didn't have mine from birth and my grandmother insisted she got hers overnight during the blitz Hmm So the failure in pigment must happen later.

The reason we're not telling our ds is that he spat his dummy out was not keen on us getting our living room redecorated he doesn't like change and wants the house preserved in aspic and demanded that we returned it to the hand-sponged orange/red that it had been for the last 20 years Hmm not going to happen Wink We told him he can change it back from teal after we're dead and give Grin

So we're not telling him so that if he doesn't come down until mid-July, then it will be a nice surprise (although he may well end up coming down before and when will see that the room is being dismantled). At the very least, he'll appreciate the new walk-in shower.

We're not going to tell him that we've got a Bluetooth enabled mirror and when he is having his usual looooong shower, we'll turn on Mr Blue Sky (ELO) really loud Grin

prettybird · 15/05/2021 15:25

Swishy hair Smile

I really struggle to smile in selfies Blush

Your hair looks amazing @prettybird! Such good condition too.
I always admire how you wear such flattering colours too. I love that apple green, but it doesn't love me back!

nowlook · 15/05/2021 15:35

My DS2 is going to shape up like your DS. We went away for our wedding anniversary a few years ago to the Lygon Arms in Broadway (edge of Cotswolds). Weather was terrible, so we came back early and used the time to paint the lounge in the same navy blue as we'd admired there. DS2 (then about 8) didn't speak to us for what felt like day.

StuntNun · 15/05/2021 15:40

I am boggling at the idea of a Bluetooth mirror. Why on Earth would I need such a thing?

I was starving today so had breakfast for a change, and very nice it was too.
B: almond cheese muffin, bacon and eggs.
L: two slices of protein bread with butter and pate - nom! Plus a glass of kefir and a mug of bone broth. Two of DH's birthday chocolates - but only two and I didn't have any trouble resisting a third which is a big difference for me after getting hypnotised BWRT treatment a couple of weeks ago.
D: will be mutton masala with cauliflower rice and homemade raita. I'm bastardising two recipes to make it so I hope it works. It's surprisingly difficult to find recipes for mutton curry; they all seem to require goat instead of mutton. I haven't had any veggies yet today so I'll have to stick loads into the curry. I'm wishing I had bought some spinach to wilt in at the end but I went to the shop and forgot to buy it I had like three things to get! Blush

prettybird · 15/05/2021 15:47

@StuntNun - dh jokingly asked the bathroom designer whether he could get speakers in the bathroom as he often takes his Bose speaker in to the bathroom and listens to music/the radio/podcasts when he's having a bath. Then when we were at the bathroom supplier, he saw the Bluetooth symbol on one of the mirrors. So it looks like I'll get my LED mirror after all Grin

To blow your mind, my criteria now are "LED, Bluetooth, shaver socket and magnifying section so I can see to put in my contact lens " Shock Plus I want it to be a rounded off rectangle.

I can get that full specification from Amazon for under £150 Shock
