The final weigh-in thread: March 2021 Low Carb Bootcamp

Here's the spreadsheet

I think this has been a really fantastic Bootcamp. Lots of really great losses.

As well as that, though, like every Bootcamp I'm always amazed and often humbled by how much we get to know people. We may all be here because we're trying to lose weight, but there's so much more going on in people's lives.

Tomorrow is the final weigh-in, but I hope very much that people will continue to check in and update us all on 'their journey' (sorry for the cliché)

@Bestbees if you're feeling rubbish after long runs make sure you are sorting out your electrolytes as soon as you get back.

Nice smoked salmon, salty, buttery scrambled eggs, spinach and avocado with lemon juice is my favourite post run refuel!!

And the most ridiculous amount of water, obviously Grin

FusionChefGeoff · 02/04/2021 08:20

@Dailyhandtowelwash I find a spoon often suffices in those situations 🤣

nowlook · 02/04/2021 08:29

I've a question about back-to-back bootcamps.

Will it be beneficial/ aid loss if I do the first two weeks with 3 meals a day (as per the rules), or should I stick to 1/2?

Bestbees · 02/04/2021 08:51

Thanks @FusionChefGeoff. I did have electrolyte drink, but didn't feel hungry at all. Until I started eating and couldn't stop! Suspect it is because I have been running 5k and then did 10k with no I between! I think I need to have something that I eat on return (egg and salmon sounds good) almost regardless of if I feel hungry.

@Dailyhandtowelwash seafood bbq sounds wonderful. No one else in my house really likes seafood so I a whole meal around it sounds bliss!

StuntNun · 02/04/2021 09:04

I'm exactly the same Mimosa, I have a very low tolerance for carbs. I can manage the occasional higher carb meal but not if it's snacky bits all day like that.

Nowlook if you're already fat-adapted then you don't need to eat three meals a day plus snacks in the first two weeks of Bootcamp. That rule is there (a) to speed up the process of fat-adaption; and (b) to help people avoid reaching for the carbs simply because they're hungry.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/04/2021 09:42

@Mimosa1 apples is what I'm craving!! But don't grapes have insane levels of fructose or something compared to most fruit so possibly the worst thing you could have chosen..? I know they used to do really funny things to my (T2 very badly managed) diabetic grandma.

I'm sure there would be other options for maintenance that wouldn't be as sky high for carb content.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/04/2021 09:48

Just found this which seems like a good place to start if you're craving fruit

Thanks StuntNun. Definitely fat adapted- just need to abstain from wine as cannot moderate for toffee Hmm

Ninkanink · 02/04/2021 10:17

@bestbees you can make cheese crisps if you want something crispy with your nibbles. Salami sticks are good too.

Ninkanink · 02/04/2021 10:27

i tend to have fruits in very small quantities, always with a meal. So a few grapes or half an apple with a cheese platter. Or some berries with cream after dinner, pear in a salad, and so on. Grapes are very high - 150g has almost 30g of sugar, so if you ate those as a snack they will likely have messed with your levels and made you feel hungry more quickly.

It’s really better for maintenance to start with adding back more carby veg, rather than fruit. And not two things in a day! Best to be very gradual about it. Something like once or twice a week have something new, or only at the weekend. And id definitely stay away from breads etc - you don’t need to have pancakes with duck, for example - wrapping it in lettuce is much more tasty and avoids the issue altogether. So unless it’s something you really, really want, best not to eat it just because it’s there.

Ninkanink · 02/04/2021 10:35

Last night husband had friends over and it really highlighted some of the changes. Fending for my self for dinner before would have meant probably cheese on toast followed by crisps. Or wedges, beans and cheese. Instead I had a whole head of brocoli, steamed. Salmon fried up and then tips in brocoli and smothered in butter. Followed by plain Greek yog, one bar of that moser Roth. 85% and one glass of red wine. OK not perfect but the fact that the brocoli was what I really Wanted to eat was a NSV.

Why are you casting that as ‘not perfect’? It is perfect in terms of making mindful choices and have something enjoyable but not going overboard. Don’t turn it into something wrong when you actually did everything right. This isn’t some kind torture lifestyle where chocolate and wine must never pass your lips!

You did well!

Bestbees · 02/04/2021 11:08

Thanks @Ninkanink you are right! Cheese crisps you say? Sound dangerously delicious!

RagzReturnsRebooted · 02/04/2021 11:16

When I started upping my carbs slightly, I would have the occasional very small apple (they're about 50g by weight so 5-7g carbs) but eat it with cheese and that doesn't seem to trigger me. Grapes are insanely sweet (always telling my diabetes patients not to eat them!).

Yesterday I had
Creaky coffee
SLC roll with leftover butter chicken curry and a boiled egg with mayo
Pork belly, stirfried cabbage and mayo
Apple and cheese.

Half a kilo has finally come off this morning and I have seen a new low, after sticking around the same weight for ages, so hopefully I'm past that little set point and moving on.

Mimosa1 · 02/04/2021 11:25

Thanks, ragz, nowlook and ninkanink - it was some of those extra special M&S grapes and into gunk that's what messed with my levels. And you're right about the pancakes - lettuce would have been fine. I've had a SLC roll toasted with a Fried egg, cheese and a tiny bit of ketchup on this morning and I feel a lot less hangry :-)

I don't think so. If you're routinely 1/2 meals a day, stick with that.

The idea behind three meals a day (but no snacks!) is to make sure that newbies to low carbing are a) eating well and b) minimising the chance of being hungry/needing to snack between meals.

My mums is the same @nowlook , she has the most inventive ways to get into conversation that I'm a social worker and my sister is a midwife, I suppose it's just because they are proud of our achievements Smile

Anyway, I'm not talking about food today as I'm trying an extended fast. Just had a Matcha Tea and it was very nice and refreshing.

nowlook · 02/04/2021 12:36

Oh, mine too Zigg

Anything holiday-related is an open door to tell someone how constrained Dsis is by school holidays. (She's a teacher, you know).

Anything child-related allows her to tell someone how she never thought I'd find the time to have children. I'm sure you can all guess why that might be...Grin

I'm currently baking bread with low carb flour. Wouldn't be surprised if Tony Blair sends a team to investigate.

BIWI · 02/04/2021 13:54

Let me know how you get on with that flour @nowlook. I tried making a pizza base with mine, and it really wasn't good. I did, though, use a recipe designed for ordinary flour, so no doubt something else needs to be added to make it with with the LC stuff.

Talking about mums, mine (no longer with us, sadly) used to introduce me to people as 'my little girl'. Even when I was over 40!

The early signs are not promising. I followed the instructions, but it didn't rise at all and now looks like this Grin

I'll try it much later

That’s so sweet, @BIWI. I wonder how old mine will be before I think of them like that! Are you the youngest? I think my little one will stay little to me for longer.

I made the effort to type up tonight’s dinner on another thread so here it is. Won’t eat the couscous obviously.

Barbecue of lobster, salmon and prawn kebabs and scallop and chorizo kebabs, with whelks on the side. Grilled English asparagus (hurray!), homemade coleslaw, salad and pesto couscous on the side.

Pudding will be rhubarb fool which I might nibble at.

nowlook · 02/04/2021 14:09

Taste-wise, it's not the worst thing I've ever tasted, but not greater. Needed cooking for longer, I think. Very heavy. A soapy aftertaste.

Wish the boys were still young enough to feed ducks Grin

ouchmyfeet · 02/04/2021 14:16

You're never too old to feed the ducks @nowlook!
