Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - time to get rid of all the Valentine's treats!

I rather suspect that a lot of us have been so far off the wagon this weekend that it's disappeared over the far horizon!

having to post on the spreadsheet may sober us all up, in more ways than one!

I hope any cheats were enjoyable. There's nothing worse than deciding to cheat and then not liking it.

But from now, it's time to buckle down and get back into the swing of things. If you did cheat, please don't complain that the scales aren't being kind to you. It's an inevitable consequence.

So let's focus on a really strict week, recognising that this is the end of our first half of Bootcamp.

Good luck to us all Flowers

For Shrove Tuesday, this is the best low carb pancake recipe I've found. They don't taste the same as pancakes as they're more eggy but they are delicious topped with a knob of butter and a squeeze of lemon if you fancy it. I omit the sweetener so it's just cream cheese, eggs and cinnamon.

BIWI · 16/02/2021 10:15

Thanks @StuntNun - I've added a new column to the Spreadsheet to add this. Because I keep forgetting the link!

I'm being tested hard right now, McDonalds offering 99p pancakes and 99p burgers, Krispy Creme offering a free doughnut and a new nutty collection of doughnuts, KFC offering a bucket of chicken for £6. It's like they are all working together to tempt me!

I know I need to unsubscribe from the mailing lists and delete the apps!

I assume cheating means you're kicked out of ketosis and back to square 1?

Ninkanink · 16/02/2021 10:36

Yes, it does mean exactly that.

Not worth it unless you’ve made a mindful choice that it’s a) something you really love and will properly appreciate, and b) you’re happy to stop your weight loss for up to a week.

Weigh it up - would you like your fat to be melting away or would you like to set yourself up for a stall/break. I had a slice of pizza the other day as an early valentine’s indulgence. Knowing full well that it would likely result in at least a few days of my body having to re set to fat adaption, but it was worth it for me because pizza is one of my favourite things, and my DH had made it for the first time and I am sentimental about silly things like that.

Definitely delete those apps though! That’s a no brainer.

pelosi · 16/02/2021 10:39

@Ninkanink you're right, I will delete the apps. Not worth wasting hard work for the sake of 'saving' a few quid on junk food!

cheeseisthebest · 16/02/2021 10:40

Morning everyone! I seem to be hovering around 10st 3/10st 4. Would be great to get under 10st 3 as I feel a bit stuck! Just goes up and down around that amount. Will KOKO. up the exercise and keep an eye on the cheese is my plan for this week.

MarmaladeTeepee · 16/02/2021 10:41

@pelosi I find I like the idea of things like doughnuts, chocolate, McDonalds etc but the reality is often really disappointing - not as tasty as I remember, rubbish textures etc - and just not worth the consequences. Definitely delete those apps!

LittleMy77 · 16/02/2021 10:49

@pelosi I will say that after 2-3 weeks of this WOE my taste buds have changed, so stuff that was previously delicious (chocolate buttons and crisps here) taste odd, overly sweet or salty and not tasty

Makes it much easier not to want them!

cheeseisthebest · 16/02/2021 10:49

I agree marmalade. They are always disappointing and leave a horrible sensation in your mouth I find.
If I feel despondent I just think how far I've come since the beginning of this year. I was a total sugar addict before.

Does anyone use a home blood sugar monitor? Thinking about getting one.

CaptainOmelette · 16/02/2021 10:56

@VeryLittleOwl I’m Highlands too - I have a 206 mile round trip to nearest clothes-selling supermarket so everything5pounds would be great for short term clothes.
I’ve bought caffeine-free teabags so they will count towards fluids yippee!

WitchWand · 16/02/2021 11:02

Electrolytes made a big difference to me. I now notice when I need them or to up the salt because I begin to drink loads and still feel thirsty.

I don't stress over it now. I've learnt to go with the flow (so to speak).

pelosi · 16/02/2021 11:07

@MarmaladeTeepee and @LittleMy77 I think you're right :)

WitchWand · 16/02/2021 11:08

Thanks for your lovely, encouraging messages yesterday BustleInYourHedgerow, Midlifemission, Lyrata and Justcallmecaptainobvious. I really appreciated that you were happy to hear about my success. When I read that, I realised that I’d been nervous about sharing it. I think I’ve had so many jealous or anxious responses from people around me that without realising it, I’d even expected something of that response here !

Lyrata It is interesting how other people can try to sabotage our weight loss through jealousy and criticism. This happened to me in the past and, at the moment, I’m aware of it happening again. I’m working hard on not letting that sort of stuff get under my skin Hmm. Thanks for your understanding and support. I’m backing you too. WinkSmile

I do agree that lockdown has been a good opportunity to avoid spectators and commentators. I’m glad of having this space and time to get used to my changed size and shape.

Great news on the oversized jeans Justcallmecaptainobvious. That was one of the first things I noticed when I went out after a few weeks of being in lockdown. I was shopping and constantly pulling my jeans up ! GrinGrin

WitchWand · 16/02/2021 11:12

Glad you liked my Stuffed Peppers recipe ShagMeRiggins. Smile

And you ask about this strange thing I’ve invented ! ‘An unfinished bottle of bubbly’ !

I know ! It’s a rare thing in this house too ! Shock My H always told me the bubbles would disappear if we didn’t drink the whole bottle all at once. I probably wanted to believe him if I’m honest. But, it isn’t true !Grin

I’ve corked it up. And I’m fiercely guarding it from everyone now. It’s waiting peacefully in the fridge till we’re ready for the next celebration!
Hopefully it won’t be long. Grin

Yes.

And yes!

Just popping in to say hi to everyone!
And you say I also jumped back on the everything5pounds site the other day.
I need a black dress for a funeral (family member I mentioned last week Sad) and ended up ordering a pair of jeans and a top for summer.
I now finally have my own wardrobe and i am planning a happy shopping spree of clothes in the next size down in the next few months.

Reporting back on the pizzas I made yesterday with the flour from the Low Carb food company

Although they were tasty, by virtue of the tomato sauce I'd made, and the toppings I used (have to blow my own trumpet there!), the bases were not really that good. I used a pizza dough recipe from Sainsbury's, but as I was making it I wasn't convinced it was going to work. It was very dense/heavy, and so when cooked for the requisite amount of time it was still a bit stodgy.

But it scratched the itch for pizza, and both DH and DS1 ate plenty of it, so it wasn't a total disaster!

Excellent start to the day here ( preens ) I managed to run for 20 mins , not fast at all , but about 2.5 k ( in usual times have a holiday business with a small gym , obviously all closed at the moment so family using it only )
Only started running at the beginning of January and am very pleased with my progress
Had lovely fried eggs with bacon and spinach as a celebration lunch ✅

@Sulusu and anyone else feeling rough
I had to give up on Bootcamp once ( partly no will power ) partly feeling so awful
What works for me is to have a small slice of wholemeal toast , it just seems to take the edge off , not every day obviously and only in the first couple of weeks when I felt truly dreadful , then it seems your body gets used to it
Disclaimer . I’m no expert , this is my personal experience

I bought the Bulk supplement because I don't like the High5 Zero one. But I've discovered I don't like the Bulk one either. I have one opened and one still in it's Amazon packaging (they sent a second because the first arrived damaged). Does anyone want it?

Ninkanink · 16/02/2021 13:45

@BIWI pizza is difficult isn’t it. To me, a perfect pizza is as close as I’ll ever get to heaven (along with a lot of other foods - I have many favourites - but many of the others are far more achievable at home and/or easily adaptable to low carbing) so I’d rather not have it at all if it’s not exactly right. I think I’ll probably leave pizza now until I can get a perfect Italian one at a restaurant...my DH’s was very good but wasn’t low carb so it’s not an option very often.

Afternoon campers!

Nice and easy Chicken with Leeks Nigel Slater recipe in the Grauniad today.

I have now ordered Lupin flour (and this is in Derby) in my quest to make a serviceable Yorkshire pud. I miss them. Am trying to get them sub 3g per pud using a combo of internet recipes and trial/error. #intrepid.

Ninkanink · 16/02/2021 13:49

@ListenLinda Sad Flowers it’s really shit.

@WitchWand I might have missed your post (I do try to catch up on everything but I often skim and then get distracted and/or forget who said what or even sometimes exactly what they said...) but Congratulations! Flowers I can’t speak for everyone of course but I can say with confidence that you can rest assured that on bootcamp every loss is celebrated and I’ve certainly never felt jealous or threatened or upset by someone else’s successes!

Lyrata · 16/02/2021 13:51

I feel very jealous of whichever Bootcamper lives on the farm and wanders around with flasks of tea and sheep all day.

Ninkanink · 16/02/2021 13:52

@Doilooklikeatourist well done on that running achievement, a great NSV for sure! I used to run a fair bit but can’t anymore after suffering with chronic severe plantar fasciitis for many years. I still miss it as a) it’s free, and b) it’s such a good tonic when the mind needs calming.
