Week 4 - Low Carb Bootcamp - how much chatting?!

758 replies

BIWI · 07/02/2021 21:30

So much chatting, I've had to start a new thread.

here's the Spreadsheet of Absolute Fabulousness

Remember, this week (like week 3) is notorious for seeing little or no weight gain, so please don't panic if the scales aren't moving for you - always assuming, of course, that you have been following the rules 100%!

Also, the Very Amazing @StuntNun has started a thread about fasting. Fasting isn't a regular part of Bootcamp, but it's a tool that you can use in your weight loss 'journey' (sorry for the cliché!)

have a look here, and think about if it's something you might want to incorporate into Bootcamp

I hope very much that things are going well for you, and that you're into the swing of things low carb by now; but as ever, post any questions/issue here and let's see if we can help.

@prettybird the muffin cases must be with my dough hook , can’t find the wretched thing anywhere

StuntNun · 13/02/2021 12:17

Lyrata you probably need to re-season them. Give them a good scrub with soapy water then oil them, preferably with an animal fat, and leave them upside down in a hot oven for an hour to start the seasoning process. Then every time you use them they can only be rinsed in warm water, dried with paper towel, and the inside re-oiled. I usually put mine on the hob for a minute after cleaning to make sure all the water has dried off. If you cook anything acidic (citrus or tomato) in them then clean them as soon as possible afterwards to avoid stripping off the seasoning layers. During/after cooking it can help to scrape the bottom surface of the pan with a metal fish slice to make sure it's nice and smooth. It takes years a fair amount of time to build up the seasoning until a fried egg will slide off a cast iron pan but you can use it for lots of other things in the meantime. It's great for foods with a ski such as duck, chicken or fish where you can crisp up the skin on the hob then put the whole pan in the oven to finish cooking. Pre-seasoned pans still need time to develop the non-stick surface but it will be a lot quicker than naked cast iron.

Ninkanink · 13/02/2021 12:17

@Doilooklikeatourist yes I’ve heard that too. If I had more than one I’d do that as well on the ones to be used for frying/sautéing but I use mine for lots of sticky stews so it needs washing (only with water).

Ninkanink · 13/02/2021 12:18

Sigh I want all the pans.

Have decided I might do duck tomorrow.

prettybird · 13/02/2021 12:26

Found the muffin tray. Ended up switching the torch on and peering into the back of the large range oven (rarely use it as I have two built in ovens too, so it's filled with baking and roasting trays), so that the blue showed up Grin

cheeseisthebest · 13/02/2021 12:36

It is very cold here and I've not been exercising. I am having all my water every day! Halo

A friend said I could be deficient in something but cant think what! Surely this WOE I'm getting lots of vits and minerals!

Ninkanink · 13/02/2021 12:38

I doubt it’s deficiency. As you said, this is a high-nutrition way of eating and you’re taking supplements anyway. Sometimes you just need more sleep/rest or naturally feel less energetic. Keep doing what you’re doing and it’ll likely right itself within a few days.

Lyrata · 13/02/2021 13:15

I just prepped my whipped bone marrow for tomorrow and I heavily recommend it.

All I did was take some marrow bones (cut length ways). I got four, so two lengths cut in half. I roasted them for 25 minutes, then scooped out the marrow and poured the excess fat into a bowl. Put it in the fridge and waited for it to return to being solid. Then added a squeeze of lemon, salt and a little rosemary.

Going to have it on steak tomorrow. Also thinking it might be nice in scrambled eggs. Or with mushrooms and shallots.

@RagzReturnsRebooted

Are you going to a local surgery or a big hub? We've started group 5 but the hubs are also calling patients and because the surgery is doing so well they're moving down the groups ahead of us. We started mid January, so there are plenty of areas several weeks ahead of us. I'm not surprised some places are on to 7 already

It's a hub at the local hospital. Other people there today also expressing their surprise at being called earlier than expected. Our neighbourhood WhatsApp group isn't all responding well to it, though! A couple of teachers (who feel they should be getting it) and a couple of older people who haven't been called yet. I have pointed out that it could also depend which GP practice they're registered at.

Yes I agree. What could I possibly be lacking in!

Might be stress, working and home schooling has been trying!
Could also be lack of exercise maybe?

BIWI · 13/02/2021 13:41

@cheeseisthebest

Hi everyone. I'm feeling really tired past few days even though I'm getting plenty of sleep. Not sure why that might be? Could I be lacking in anything? I take multi vits, iron, vit c, vit d and b12 spray.
What about the electrolytes though? i.e. magnesium, potassium and sodium? l doubt there will be enough of any of those in a multivit, even assuming there is any in there at all.

Are you keeping your salt intake up?

BIWI · 13/02/2021 13:41

@venusandmars that meal sounds amazing!

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 13/02/2021 13:50

True, didn’t think about the electrolytes!

But homeschooling/stress/lack of exercise could also be contributing.

cheeseisthebest · 13/02/2021 13:53

Oh yes good point. I'm having a lot of salt so not been having electrolytes. Maybe I need salt in my water.

cheeseisthebest · 13/02/2021 13:54

Or should I get some electrolyte tablets?

Jollyholibobs · 13/02/2021 14:15

Thanks for all the pans advice. Just back from a long walk but will do more research in due course.

@venusandmars that meal sounds amazing.

MarmaladeTeepee · 13/02/2021 14:18

Fab news about your vaccine BIWI. The thing is they're racing through everyone so quickly even those complaining on the whatsapp group will be done before they know it. It's so lovely to finally have this success story to lift everyone's spirits and I think it's due to warm up next week (can't remember the last time it was above 1° here in the North East!) so Spring will feel like it's just around the corner Smile

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 13/02/2021 14:33

Good luck with your vaccine BIWI!

I had mine on Friday at a big hub. It was a bit stressful, as I had to sit and wait for half an hour in a room with a LOT of other people. All spaced out, but still.

Didn't sleep well, then felt ropey all day yesterday, but I'm taking that as a positive.

Very relieved I've had it, though!

cheeseisthebest · 13/02/2021 14:51

Hope goes well BIWI! I do think its amazing how quickly everyone is getting their vaccines.

prettybird · 13/02/2021 14:58

The cheese muffins are fab Smile I needed to bake something for myself as I'd just baked dh some home made sourdough croissants Grin

Thinking of making some plain ones tomorrow morning, as a base for poached eggs (to be served with a really good South African pink bubbly, Le Lude Rosé Smile)

Wow, kudos to you for possibly the most unusual low carb food item, but that made me feel queasy! Not sure why, I just kind of feel like the inside of bones should, you know, stay on the inside... Confused What does it taste like?! Morbidly fascinated but no desire to try it (DH would!).
StuntNun · 13/02/2021 15:07

I prefer this electrolyte powder from Amazon cheeseisthebest as it doesn't contain sweeteners but no matter how many times I mention it, it never seems to take off! I've been using it for about three years.

Ninkanink · 13/02/2021 15:10

Oh I love marrowbone! Very rich, though.

Lyrata · 13/02/2021 15:12

@RagzReturnsRebooted sorry! It’s really nice, I swear. Just like a really deep, meaty flavour. Like if you had slow cooked beef or something - that flavour note but x10.

It’s very intense in whipped form - but if you chuck it in a slow cooked stew or something then it just adds a nice flavour note.

cheeseisthebest · 13/02/2021 15:21

Is it a bit like lard? I remember my Dad loving that years ago!

Thanks stuntnun I might get those then.
I had a headache too but just had a big bowl of green veggie soup with chorizo and lots of parmesan so very salty and a headache has gone so could be a salt issue?
