Week 4 - Low Carb Bootcamp - how much chatting?!

BIWI · 07/02/2021 21:30

So much chatting, I've had to start a new thread.

here's the Spreadsheet of Absolute Fabulousness

Remember, this week (like week 3) is notorious for seeing little or no weight gain, so please don't panic if the scales aren't moving for you - always assuming, of course, that you have been following the rules 100%!

Also, the Very Amazing @StuntNun has started a thread about fasting. Fasting isn't a regular part of Bootcamp, but it's a tool that you can use in your weight loss 'journey' (sorry for the cliché!)

have a look here, and think about if it's something you might want to incorporate into Bootcamp

I hope very much that things are going well for you, and that you're into the swing of things low carb by now; but as ever, post any questions/issue here and let's see if we can help.

I had no idea you could get larger airfryers! Ours is a bog standard one which is ok but rarely used and I now realise this has nothing to do with the fact it's just another kitchen gadget fad but it's because it's too small! Off to investigate 5.8kg ones now...

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 12/02/2021 19:32

I’ve lusted after an air fryer for ages, love a good kitchen gadget! I got a soup maker for Christmas, have used it at least once a week since, absolutely love it.

Oneborneverydecade · 12/02/2021 19:57

I literally left ebay to come here and ask if an air fryer is worth the money and you guys are ahead of the game. Still undecided though ha
I've seen one that's 1.8l but don't think that's big enough for a family of 5?

Dreamqueen · 12/02/2021 19:58

Woke up really hungry this morning so had bacon, egg and a Lc waffle.
L-a piece of leftover cheesburger pie and salad
D- salmon with mayonnaise and broccoli. A couple spoons of greek yoghurt.

I've had 2 coffees with a splash of cream.

I feel so good on this WOE, hope that I can keep it up.

I'm another one now lusting after an air fryer.

StuntNun · 12/02/2021 20:13

I love my air fryer. I have the ActiFry which has a stirring paddle unlike most air fryers. DH made butter chicken in it tonight and it was awesome and so easy. It's also great for stir fries, sausages, chicken wings, pork chops etc.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 12/02/2021 20:50

You’re all now tempting me with this gadget! We have No Room.

Do you reckon you could do egg-fried cauli rice?

My personal chef excelled last night - zapped cauliflower in the food processor, mixed the resulting rice with mushrooms, and then baked it all with butter. Made a passable pretend biryiani.

venusandmars · 12/02/2021 20:51

Just catching up with the thread...

@Pleaseandthankyou what counts as your day of sheer indulgence? For me it would be: B - scrambled eggs made with cream and some smoked salmon; L - delicious salad with leaves, cucumber, celery, avocado, topped with warm fried chicken liver and crispy bacon, olive oil and mayonnaise; D - steak with blue cheese sauce, fried mushrooms, broccoli, buttered spinach. That sounds pretty much like boot-camp indulgence. I admit that some string fried chips would be great, but I'd not really have much room to eat them, so maybe only 2 or 3 or 6...

@ShagMeRiggins and no-one really want to eat a plain boiled potato - we like them with cream or butter or fried... They are just a way of eating fat and salt.

@ListenLinda my grandson was crying today because he really really REALLY wanted a time machine (a real working one, not a pretend one) and I wouldn't give him one!

Roast chicken dinner with dgc for lunch. I gave them a choice of veg - carrots, cabbage, peas, sweetcorn. They chose them ALL

Boiled the chicken carcass for stock and made green veg soup - shallot, leek, cabbage, a few peas, spinach. Add some other green 'veg' that were lurking in the freezer, only to find that they were gooseberries Shock The soup is still green but has a definite gooseberry taste (well at least I can taste them - dh just thought that the 'squeeze of lemon' I'd added was tangy).

So food today:
B - coffee with cream
L - roast chicken, buttered cabbage, some carrot, few peas, a quarter of a hash brown, gravy
D - chicken and green veg soup, with gooseberries!!

NotwatchingSpooks · 12/02/2021 20:58

buffey I’ve got a magimix, but it is quite heavy to lift in and out of the cupboard. I have had it about 15 years and fingers crossed it’s still going strong. When I replace it I would buy something a bit smaller if i could.

Yes!

Whisk up an egg, with a small dash of water. Season lightly.

In a medium-sized frying pan, add a dash of oil and then make a very thin omelette. Turn it out on to a plate and let it cool. When it's cool, roll it up like a pancake, and then slice it thinly.

Then fry your cauliflower - ideally start with some chopped shallot (or onion) and let that soften, then add the cauliflower and fry on a higher heat till cooked through - only a couple of minutes.

Once it's cooked, stir through the shredded egg, and season with some soy sauce.

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayerim afraid I'm still getting to grips with it regarding timings, it has some preset ones but I tend to as just them and just keep checking on things, they usually need a bit of a 'shoogle' anyway. I'd guess at around 20 minutes, usually have to cook for less time than an oven but I always over do chicken because I like it dry rather than moist (DH has overcook mine on the BBQ!). There's always Google.
@venusandmars Grin at your gooseberry soup!

www.amazon.co.uk/COSORI-Electric-Temperature-Reminder-Function/dp/B07N8QY3YH/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=corsori+5.5&sprefix=Corsori&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1613164926&sr=8-1 this is the air fryer I have. I'm very happy with it so far.
Next desire is to buy one of the accessory sets, that have inserts for doing stuff in layers and other interesting things. I'm resisting for now, as they are around £30 and I probably won't use half of it!

@BIWI I've egg fried cauliflower rice before but never cooked the egg first, that sounds like it would have a much better texture!

ChristMyArse · 12/02/2021 21:48

Evening all, I too want the new gadget but have No Room. V annoying.

I've not posted food for a while but I keep a daily write up of it as it keeps me accountable!

B courgette and mushroom omelette
L chorizo and prawns with cabbage, and other BC stuff that I can't remember
D Greek yog and cinnamon

Nearly finished my water for today and putting my ass in bed so that I get some sleep!

RagzReturnsRebooted · 12/02/2021 22:14

Oh yeah, food...
Breakfast - creamy coffee
Lunch - leftover aubergine 'lasagne'
Dinner - air fried pork belly (brushed with soy sauce, sprinkle of herbs and spices) with air fried sprouts. Bit of mayo.
DH had made curry but I've had a slightly upset stomach for a few days and decided I'd have something a bit plainer. Not sure if it's the change in diet or something else, but curry seemed like a bad idea and DH doesn't go easy on the spices. Our DCs can eat very hot food now!

I have 85% chocolate but I haven't had any for a few days, just not felt the snacking urge at all (maybe I am ill?!), last time I had some I had to force the last half a square down, I was just eating it because I felt I should have a treat. Had a stressful few days at work (my job is usually calm, for nursing) and haven't been drawn to either food or alcohol for comfort, which is unusual. Messaged my boss at work earlier to say I needed a rant and she came to my room bearing chocolate, which I politely declined and have managed to avoid all the special treats we've had in for a colleague's leaving day yesterday. We always have cake and biscuits in and many days I have started on them for breakfast, with constant picking whenever I make coffee. Now I just look at them and think, nah... Halo

Oneborneverydecade · 12/02/2021 23:01

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayer your poor DD, it's scary when they scream isn't it. I hope she makes a quick recovery

CaptainOmelette · 13/02/2021 05:24

Morning all. Up at 3.45am yuck so gave in to a caffeinated cuppa and a square of 90% chocolate...not the best breakfast but hey ho.
Is anyone else finding the rest of the family wolfing down “our” meals? I hardly got any mushroom stroganoff, was gutted but I like them eating good food. I had my three year old in floods of tears yesterday saying she was “just so sad my nursery is taking so long”, bless her. It’s an outdoor nursery so I think she’ll need lots of stodge-food when they go back, it’s bitter here at minute.
I gained a lb this week but TOTM and first week since 1st Jan I haven’t lost so was expecting it. Today’s food: B - Lindt, L - mackerel salad, D - multi-veg omelette.

Oneborneverydecade · 13/02/2021 07:16

Morning CaptainO that's a very early start ouch. Our DD is off to an outdoor nursery in September, I've been wondering how she'll manage if it's this cold next winter. Porridge and a hot lunch will help I guess?

Pleaseandthankyou · 13/02/2021 07:55

@venusandmars your day of indulgence sounds wonderful. There would be nothing to be gained by sharing mine. I have a few excellent independent restaurants near me who are doing there best to survive by offering carry outs. None are boot carb friendly. I have felt bad about not supporting them. Also the items they are making are really special. They won’t be available when the restaurants are able to open again. These aren’t just any old carbs 😂. I thought as it was valentines weekend I would try them. Dinner last night was delicious. However I felt awful afterwards. I was so full. I have been awake for a couple of hours already this morning even though this is my chance for a lie in. I won’t be tempted to do the same thing next weekend. I might try your menu instead.

Lyrata · 13/02/2021 07:56

Just resisted buying rice noodles in the supermarket which I started telling myself would be fine in small quantities in my ramen tomorrow. But if I don’t buy it I can’t eat any of it which is undeniably much better.

Queuing for Waitrose to open now which annoyingly doesn’t open until 8am here. Want to find some LC treats.

CaptainOmelette · 13/02/2021 08:28

@Oneborneverydecade try not to worry too much - the nursery outerwear is superb. I have soft thermal leggings for mine and tend to layer thermal vest/long sleeved top/woolly jumper and a woolly hat but she never complains of the cold and we are in the Highlands.

CaptainOmelette · 13/02/2021 08:29

@Oneborneverydecade oh and yes, daily porridge!!

catwithflowers · 13/02/2021 08:32

@venusandmars 😂😂😂😂

venusandmars · 13/02/2021 08:54

Plans for today are all up in the air, and we've got food meant for dh to take to PILs, which is now in our fridge.

B - escaping the food and fridge chaos by going for a walk. Snow is melting but there's an icy wind, and it's getting worse, so I don't think I'll be out for long.
L - coffee with cream, bacon, egg, mushrooms
D - more of the green veg and gooseberry soup! Chicken salad.

StuntNun · 13/02/2021 08:55

Venus I read that as coffee with cream and bacon. Grin

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 13/02/2021 09:42

My seriously low carb bread has arrived!

Which means today’s meals are:

B - eggs, spinach, sausages
L - Boursin mushrooms on toast
D - umm, something from the freezer. Maybe chicken thighs. And masses of green veg.

BIWI · 13/02/2021 10:07

@Lyrata if you can get hold of some Bare Naked noodles they work very well in Asian soup-type dishes.

If Waitrose don't sell them, Sainsbury's do - or if you have an Asian supermarket near you, look out for shirataki noodles (they're exactly the same thing). They'll probably be in a fridge rather than on the shelf. Bare Naked noodles will be on the shelf somewhere in the pasta aisle or near the Chinese/Japanese foods, if they stock them.

Loving all the chat but struggling to keep up.

Have swerved the air fryer pull and have not even looked it up on Amazon. My absolute go to kitchen gadget is my pressure cooker and stick blender for delicious soup. However our set of at least 30 year old saucepans have started to fail. Last night the welds on the handle failed as I was draining broccoli and all the broccoli fell in the sink. We need to invest in new pans urgently. It’s not safe really if it had failed as I was carrying it to the sink I’d have spilt boiling water on me. DH has made a aesthetic judgement and wants to replace them with stainless steel le creuset. I’m not convinced but it’s going to be difficult when we can’t handle them and are choosing on line. Now he’s made his mind up he’ll be hard to sway. If anyone has recommendations I’d love to know.

I’m just feeling bored today. Still in bed with a black coffee which DH kindly brought up to me. Need to do a long run but cold weather is so off putting. I’ll be happy when I have done it.

Going to make the cheese muffins and soup for lunch. Will venture into town this afternoon for some goodies for Valentine’s Day dinner. I am thinking starter of either scallops or prawns in garlic butter, main of tuna steaks coated in sesame seeds and seared served with stir fried veg with sesame oil, soy and ginger. Desert will be the chocolate mousse that’s been posted here with some raspberries. Maybe some nice cheese too.
Today plan
B black coffee
L cheese muffins and soup
D pan fried sea bass with flgv

Have had a good last two days where I have managed not snack excessively on cheese a Greek yoghurt for the later part of the day. It had been becoming a bad habit.

Have a good weekend everyone and KOKO.
