Week 4 - Low Carb Bootcamp - how much chatting?!

BIWI · 07/02/2021 21:30

So much chatting, I've had to start a new thread.

here's the Spreadsheet of Absolute Fabulousness

Remember, this week (like week 3) is notorious for seeing little or no weight gain, so please don't panic if the scales aren't moving for you - always assuming, of course, that you have been following the rules 100%!

Also, the Very Amazing @StuntNun has started a thread about fasting. Fasting isn't a regular part of Bootcamp, but it's a tool that you can use in your weight loss 'journey' (sorry for the cliché!)

have a look here, and think about if it's something you might want to incorporate into Bootcamp

I hope very much that things are going well for you, and that you're into the swing of things low carb by now; but as ever, post any questions/issue here and let's see if we can help.

I sympathise with everyone with i ripe avocado issues - I have three I’m trying to ripen and they are rock solid! Keep having to change my meal plans because they are j of ready yet!

I’ve just tried one of the teapigs cold brew teas (rose and lychee) - it is really delicious! Only 1kcal, trace carbs and 0 sugar. Also got the peach one to try but haven’t had that yet. Popped the teabag in my water bottle with cold water and it tastes lovely - nice change from plain water, even though I don’t mind it. It will be nice to have in an evening instead of wanting alcohol or a sugary drink.

Bestbees · 10/02/2021 07:25

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayer hope you are feeli g better this morning.

One of my kids has a cough so isolating and getting a test. Fingers crossed as whilst my vulnerable dh has had a vaccine it wont be effective yet.

B not sure... Might just go for creamy coffee
L salad with chicken, mayo, dressing, small amount of roast beetroot
D turkey chili with cheese and Greek yog in lettuce boats.

StuntNun · 10/02/2021 08:01

I have developed FOMO about veg boxes. Are they good value compared to the supermarket? I usually shop at Lidl which is cheap but they don't always have the best selection. Also I have fallen into a rut and always buy the same vegetables that are quick and easy to cook. Maybe I need to branch out more? I'm at weight maintenance so I don't have to worry about the odd higher carb vegetable such as parsnip.

Underthebludgeoningsofchance · 10/02/2021 08:03

Thanks to all for the tips. I love radishes, but have never known what to do with them other than to eat them raw in salad. I will definitely try roasting them. Whoever said they were potatoey when roasted really brought music to my ears.
@BIWI
I've always worked by the principle of glycaemic load. Net carbs is an oversimplification of this. All carbs are not equal. Think of the humble potato. Peeled and mashed with butter, it acts more like a simple sugar in your body and is processed very quickly, stimulating your insulin response and then dropping your blood sugar so that you get hungry. However that same potato, baked with the skin on and eaten with the same amount of butter will take longer to digest and hence will not stimulate your insulin response as quickly, so the net effect is that you will feel fuller for longer and your blood sugar won't peak and trough the way that the mash will cause.

Jollyholibobs · 10/02/2021 08:04

B black coffee
L cheese and avacado salad and Greek yoghurt
D paneer curry with flgv

Buying avocado such a gamble. Never know quite what you have til you cut it open. But when it’s a good one it’s so delicious. It’s a while since I had a really poor specimen.

LittleMy77 · 10/02/2021 08:13

Anyone with avocado issues, this has been a game changer for ripening! It’s actually a Portuguese sausage dish (you set fire to them on it) but I put my avocados on it

Dh and I think because the air gets to them easily it helps ripen, plus they hardly ever go crap on one side, like the do on a plate

I have a pair of avocadoes that I bought in my week before last's shopping. Laughingly branded 'ripe and ready'. Best before date 3 February. Are they soft and ripe yet? Are they buggery.

After a rubbish week 3 the weight is just falling off me this week. Cant quite believe it, eating delicious food and not missing out on anything. Wish I'd done this years ago.

Ninkanink · 10/02/2021 09:02

A perfect avocado is a wonderful thing! I can still remember the fantastic avocados we used to have in South Africa 25 years ago. And the mangoes in India!! - I still hanker for that true mango flavour/texture and I lived there almost 40 years ago at 6 years old!

@StuntNun we find the veg boxes great value, but it is more expensive for sure, especially compared to LIDL/ALDI. Maybe a third to twice as much? I think the avocados I bought last month were £6.99 for 4, so that’s a fair bit more. The butternut squash this week was £2 and I can buy them for £1 at Morrison’s. I’ve never sat down to make a direct comparison across the board. We used to do pretty much all our shopping at ALDI, with a supplementary shop once in a while from bigger supermarkets, so it has definitely meant a jump up in cost. However the quality is much, much better, it lasts much longer, plus we support local farms and economy, so since we have the money I am happy to pay a bit extra for it.

It does help me to keep out of a rut. Once in a while you get an interesting addition such as Romanesco broccoli or Jerusalem artichoke. There isn’t as much choice as in the big supermarkets, of course, but I’m okay with that - we’re boycotting most of them now anyway - I think ALDI, LIDL, Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s are the only ones left that aren’t on the shit list! And I usually go for the organic U.K. box as our main selection so it’s local fresh seasonal produce, for the most part.

Ninkanink · 10/02/2021 09:04

Oh and the avocados from Riverford were fantastic, unlike the supermarket offerings this month, both of which had to go in the bin, so the £6+ was money well spent!

Ninkanink · 10/02/2021 09:06

Avocados will ripen much better if you put them in a paper bag with a couple of apples or a banana. But supermarket avocados just aren’t reliable no matter what you do.

Ninkanink · 10/02/2021 09:07

@Bestbees 🤞 on the test!

Ninkanink · 10/02/2021 09:21

@cheeseisthebest it’s great isn’t it! That’s why we repeat our mantra ‘Keep the faith, KOKO, Trust the process’ over and over again! 👍👍

Keep it up on the fat intake, veg intake and water! And be mindful with cheese/dairy over the next week or two so you don’t inadvertently scupper yourself. Enjoy the fat melting!

BIWI · 10/02/2021 09:26

All true. But we're not following a GI WOE on Bootcamp, so we really don't subtract fibre from the carb counts.

@1stMrsF that was a tough day! You did well to stay on plan. Well done!

Hopeislost · 10/02/2021 09:51

BIWI was it a supermarket delivery? You should have complained! I always get the 'ripe and ready' avocados in our delivery and if they're not ripe, I complain and they refund them --which happens most weeks

Luckily my DD eats bananas so they get stuck in the fruit bowl for a few days to ripen.

Ninkanink · 10/02/2021 09:53

@BIWI

But I don't have any apples or bananas ... Halo
😆 me neither which is probably why my last lot went rotten! Oh I tell a lie...I bought one apple yesterday for DH to have with his blue cheese salad.
Justcallmecaptainobvious · 10/02/2021 10:03

Suddenly I feel like not liking avocados is making my life much simpler!

Considering a veg box here too, to see us through until our own veg harvest starts. Does anyone else grow lots of their own? We didn’t grow anything last year (house move and baby arrival in summer), but I’m getting sorted for this year now. By late summer I’m hoping to exist mostly on veg from our garden, meat from the local butcher (all locally sourced), eggs from our chickens and dairy from a farm down the road. If I can cut supermarket food down to a minimal portion of our food I will be very happy!

LostaraYil · 10/02/2021 10:09

@cheeseisthebest I'm on week 6 now and also finally having a good week. 5 lbs down since Monday, seems mad but I had no loss week 3-5 and now it's suddenly dropped off! It is worth sticking with!
I'm also jumping on the avocado wagon today, might have it with bacon, egg and lettuce for lunch. Dinner will be sausages (low carb) with cauliflower and swede in some form.

BIWI · 10/02/2021 10:14

I'm wondering just how many times I have to warn people about weeks 3-5 before anyone believes me!!!

@Ninkanink I’m the same; we moved back from the US last year and I miss properly ripe tropical fruit and avocados (of course I am not eating tropical fruit on this WOE tho, maybe it’s meant to be Grin)

Weirdly after weigh in on Mon morning, I dropped 2.5lbs, I haven’t been this weight for nearly two years so that’s great.

I’m massively grumpy today for no particular reason and DS is annoying me to the max. I’m lucky that dh is doing all the homeschooling atm but the stupidity, screeching, and constant repetition this morning drove me out to Morrison’s at 8.30 for a low carb sanctioned swede run...(plus I’d broken my cafetière and it needs replacing)

NotwatchingSpooks · 10/02/2021 10:16

Morning all, I am experiencing the ping pong lb , I am just going to koko, but am going to reduce all cream and cheese as I think that may be the culprit. However, I was complimented on my weight loss today, so I am going to hold on to that.

I’ve been researching robot vacuum cleaners, have any of you got one? I love the idea of drinking a coffee while it whizzes around.

Today
B Greek yogurt
L chicken soup
D beef with aubergines

It’s the same every bootcamp isn’t it! 😁😁
