Week 3 - Jan '21 Low Carb Bootcamp - time for Light?

BIWI · 31/01/2021 11:40

Well thanks to all the chat, I've had to start this week's thread earlier than usual Grin

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to declare all

You now have a choice: you can move on to Bootcamp Light, which means you can re-introduce nuts and seeds, some fruit and alcohol - all in moderation.

However, also bear in mind that weeks 3 & 4 are notorious for little or not weight loss and this is nothing to do with moving on to Bootcamp Light. It's just something that seems to happen.

So it's up to you. You can stay on Bootcamp if you wish, or move on to Bootcamp Light, or a hybrid - so you do Bootcamp during the week but relax into Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever you decide - good luck! Here's to a good week ahead.

I absolutely love a butter chicken curry. Definitely going on the menu for this week or next!

@Lyrata I know what you mean re easy/quick meals vs. more special ones. I very much feel the same way except our more elaborate meals aren’t always at the weekend, because we’re both at home atm. But I do lots of very quick, very simple, or cobble-together meals with whatever I’ve got to hand. Means I appreciate the more special meals even more!

DulcetMoans · 31/01/2021 21:03

@venusandmars love the sound of both of those recipes! Thank you!

flossiegrippiter · 31/01/2021 21:06

Brilliant tip thank you @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal I'll be implementing that from tomorrow

MarmaladeTeepee · 31/01/2021 21:25

I'm think I'm going to stick to proper Bootcamp as I'm enjoying it even though my meals are nowhere near as adventurous as most of yours! I'm mostly doing the same family meals as before but adding loads more fat to mine and substituting any carb elements with a load of green veg. I'm not bothered about booze as my tastes are ridiculously unsophisticated and I only like alcoholic drinks that taste like squash: rose wine, fruity ciders, flavoured gins etc and I already know they're totally out of the question.

I think my only concession might be on Sundays as we always have a roast dinner and I miss roast potatoes and parsnips. Would 1 roastie and half a roast parsnip be allowed even though they're carby?

nowlook · 31/01/2021 21:50

Bloody hell, Lyrata, that puts us to shame! The inside of my fridge looks like Steptoe's yard.

Love a butter chicken too Ninkanink but I'm sticking with BC proper as (like you, I think?) I care little for fruit and nut(s).

Please do the veg box opening venus. We could be influencers one day. At the moment, the only things holding me back are a lack of technical skills and a face the camera is at best ambivalent about.

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 31/01/2021 22:18

@venusandmars I may give your butter chicken recipe a go! I made one last week (subbed paneer in) and it was a bit disappointing. The taste was nice but a bit bland - I had resolved to double all the spices if I tried again!

I’m loving the chat (you lot make up a considerable proportion of my social life at the moment) and the cooking! So far I think this is what sets this apart from any other “diet group” I’ve known - lots of genuinely great dishes not ten ways with a mullerlight

Hopeislost · 31/01/2021 23:54

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal I do similar and drink a pint of water every time my tea or coffee is brewing. As a caffeine addict, it ensures I drink enough water!

@MarmaladeTeepee Have you tried celeriac roasties? My DH now prefers them to regular ones!

@Lyrata Your seafood looks amazing! Stupid question - do the oysters come open or do you have to shuck them yourself?

1WayOrAnother2 · 01/02/2021 00:17

I love the humour and great recipes on here.

All this laughter must help melt pounds.

ListenLinda · 01/02/2021 05:40

Another 2.5lbs off this week! I seriously love this WOE, I could never lose this much during the first two weeks of the numerous times I joined slimming world 😂
7.5lb in total, going to do my measurements again today too.
As this week is notorious for little or no gain, it’s period week Sad, and DH is on annual leave for the next two weeks, I am going to try stay as strict as possible to counteract the damage that could be done!

Onelittlepiglet · 01/02/2021 05:46

Wow that butter chicken looks amazing! I will definitely try that at some point. I haven’t had a curry for a while.

Lots of great recipe ideas on here so thanks for posting! I need to go shopping today...

Well I’ve weighed in and I am 2.5lbs down! So hopefully that has broken my week 3/4 plateau. That’s 11.5lbs since 1 jan. I hope I start to feel my trousers feeling looser soon as they aren’t currently, but I tend to loose weight off my stomach and hips last.

I’m into week 5 now and still sticking to bootcamp - the only thing I have allowed myself is the occasional addition of frozen raspberries to my Greek yoghurt and cream, but only about 3 at a time and once every few days. I’ve decided to extend dry January as I’m not really missing alcohol. I might relax that for one day at the end of feb for my birthday and have a glass of fizz!

Good luck for the weigh ins and hope everyone has a good week!

MrsOmelette · 01/02/2021 06:04

@Ninkanink I used the pizza recipe on wholesome yum but diet doctor is very similar. Warning...it is incredibly filling! I used a mix of tomato purée and garlic purée as the sauce then added veg toppings. I think if I’d used meat toppings I would’ve popped. 😆
Today I am very stressed, have to talk with my solicitor about some court proceedings and even though my eldest IS a lawyer I hate talking to them...especially when I accidentally call my lawyer by my daughter’s pet name then feel a fool hahaha. Then gardening and a beach walk and home-schooling. And only good food choices, I hope. Stress and tiredness are huge bad-choice factors.

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 01/02/2021 07:01

3lbs off, I’m happy with that! Hungry for breakfast as I didn’t have much dinner last night, but thinking I may start fasting through breakfast on some days. Will experiment this week.

@MrsOmelette hope your meeting goes well. I did a little gardening yesterday and it was amazing how much it raised my spirits! Think I’ll be a bit more ambitious with it this year.

oscarandelliesdad · 01/02/2021 07:12

Morning all. @mrsomelette,
I hope the meeting goes well. I called my ht 'pumpkin' last week in an absent momentGrin I'm very interested in the rhubarb crumble idea. Not even a sliver of honey to stew your rhubarb in?? I usually add almonds and oats to the dc crumbles but this would be a departure...
3.5 down this week for me, so chuffed. Have good days all.

Definitelymaybeee · 01/02/2021 07:29

Morning all. Sorry for being silent last week, my daughter's school was having a digital detox and I joined her in solidarity! I stuck to the plan though and am 2lbs down this morning. Got a lot of catch up reading to do now, wish me luck 😮 Sticking to bootcamp all week but imagine I'll have a g&t on Friday evening. Looks like there are a lot of losses this morning, well do everyone.

MrsOmelette · 01/02/2021 07:30

@Justcallmecaptainobvious gardening is great for the soul isn’t it. We planted loads of new hedge plants last year and I can’t wait to see how they do this year, especially the blackthorn (aka my own sloes for slow gin 😍).
@oscarandelliesdad haha pumpkin makes me feel better...I tend to think calling my solicitor sweetheart is a tad unprofessional! No, when low-carving is use sweetener with the rhubarb and it’s fine as I like it quite tart anyway. I know people who make a granola type topping for crumbles, but the almonds give it softness which I like. I’m making myself hungry now...

Bestbees · 01/02/2021 07:33

2lb Gain! Gutted really. This means that I have put on weight through this bootcamp. I have been strict too. Confused

Will need plenty of critique on my food I think, and I am going to restrict cheese in the week. Should I start measuring portions @BIWI? I wonder if I am doing something obvious wrong? The food is yummy and I feel pretty good so koko and hope for a whoosh?

Breakfast
Spinach (3 balls of frozen) knob of butter, two eggs and a large spoonful of Greek yog. 1 cup of tea with milk.

Lunch salad (half a romaine lettuce, half a tomato, quarter of a yellow pepper, 4 inches of cucumber) prawns (about 60g) with mayo, a tiny dot of Tom puree, half a small avo. Will drizzle on some vinagerette.

Dinner
Sea bass (one fillet) fried in oil, tbsp pesto mixed into generous splash of cream, lett over buttery swede mash and cabbage.

Is this too much? I can cut down on the cream it's just already meal planned for the family. Should I measure and try to stay below 50g carbs/1500 cals?

Howdidthathappen1 · 01/02/2021 08:00

Right back in the game today - not that I've eaten carbs but water consumption has been almost zero. In my defence at times my job involves hanging around places for literally hours with no access to a toilet and can end up being a 12 hr or longer day. On wfh days I'm fine but I just have to accept weight loss but be slower.
B. Omelette
L Green n cheese soup
D. Some sort of curry

I'm not finding that although I still wake up starving and have a big breakfast- appetite is lower rest of day and portions are getting smaller.
Down 1lb this week (lack of water!!)

DulcetMoans · 01/02/2021 08:00

Good to see the losses coming in. I'll be hoping on the morning but not expecting too much.

We need to get out in the garden soon. When lockdown one came that was what we did first, planted up and tidied. Can't believe we are nearly back round to it!

Lyrata · 01/02/2021 08:01

@Hopeislost you have to shuck them yourself but the shuckers only cost a few quid and it’s not that difficult. I normally find about one in ten are real bastards and the rest are fine. Just do it onto a chopping board and not while holding the oyster so if it slips you won’t stab yourself!

@Bestbees I’m so sorry you didn’t lose. I would hope for a whoosh. It doesn’t look like you could be over-eating. Are you exercising or walking more? It could be water-retention.

I think it is probably possible to overeat if you go mad with cheese and LC ‘hacks’ with lots of nuts etc but it doesn’t look like you’re doing that.

EarlGreyHot · 01/02/2021 08:05

Marginal gain this week (0.2lbs) almost STS... don't mind terribly as last week was week 3 for me, I'm on my period and I indulged in a few glasses of wine this weekend. Will KOKO and look forward to breaking through the 11st barrier soon.
Planning on ordering some pork belly and oxtail from a local farm shop to mix up the meals a little this week. We had roast duck instead of our usual chicken yesterday and it was delicious with cheesy mashed celeriac and leeks, carrots, broccoli and green beans.
Have a great week everyone!

Jollyholibobs · 01/02/2021 08:11

0.6lbs down today but I am happy with that. Slow loss now as very near my target.

Haven’t posted all last week as could not keep up with the thread but have caught up now. Have loved all the chat. Lots of chat I’d have loved to join in if I could have kept up! Hope this week won’t be so busy at work.

My favourite thing to do with cabbage- sweetheart is best for this. Cut it into thin ‘tagliatelle’ steam it, add butter and serve with leeks and mushrooms softened in butter, to which I add garlic, herbs and cream cheese or boursin.

Happy February everyone!

VeryLittleOwl · 01/02/2021 08:14

1lb in the wrong direction, but that's down to (a) the very bad day on Thursday and (b) not drinking enough. Down 5.5lbs for January as a whole though. If I can lose 4.5lbs this month I'll equal the lowest point I hit in summer 2019.

prettybird · 01/02/2021 08:17

@Bestbees - I'd say looking at that menu that you're not eating enough - not that you should be cutting back further Shock. But I'm sure @BIWI or @StuntNun can critique further.

Plus, are you having your water allocation? This is essential and non-negotiableGrin

I think it was @AthelstaneTheUnready who was stalling who, when her diet was looked at was found not to be eating enough. She added extra to her meals and promptly started losing Smile

pinkpinkeverywhere · 01/02/2021 08:24

4lbs down, which means a whole stone in two weeks. Can't quite believe it. Need to extend the variety of food I'm eating I think. I've discovered I really don't like cream and I've found the meals I've made with it I've not enjoyed at all.

Ninkanink · 01/02/2021 08:34

@Bestbees is it you who is very near to target? If so it generally will be much slower progress on the scales so I would switch and focus on NSVs/health benefits to keep yourself motivated. If you’ve not got much weight to lose then sometimes calorie counting does become necessary. But before you do that I would suggest that you could leave breakfast and that way you’re automatically eating less plus getting the fasting benefits. If you’re properly fat adapted this should be easy to do - you won’t feel hungry and you will have plenty of energy. Please do not restrict fat; you still need to eat lots of it to keep your system burning fat.

I’m sorry you’re discouraged.
