Week 3 - Jan '21 Low Carb Bootcamp - time for Light?

BIWI · 31/01/2021 11:40

Well thanks to all the chat, I've had to start this week's thread earlier than usual Grin

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to declare all

You now have a choice: you can move on to Bootcamp Light, which means you can re-introduce nuts and seeds, some fruit and alcohol - all in moderation.

However, also bear in mind that weeks 3 & 4 are notorious for little or not weight loss and this is nothing to do with moving on to Bootcamp Light. It's just something that seems to happen.

So it's up to you. You can stay on Bootcamp if you wish, or move on to Bootcamp Light, or a hybrid - so you do Bootcamp during the week but relax into Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever you decide - good luck! Here's to a good week ahead.
@pelosi
I just pan fried in butter for a couple of minutes , then , off the heat I popped a lid on top and it kept hot and probably carried on cooking
I think its just luck , as some caulis will be fresher than others and it will also depend on how small the “ rice “ is
Less time is best I think , al denté ✅
Thanks, I will cook it less next time.

MrsOmelette so sorry you are struggling at the moment, I’ve had anxiety in the past and it is horrid, please, please speak to your GP if you are struggling.

Thank you for the kale tips, I boiled it for a couple of minutes, drained it and added olive oil, butter and sea salt, it was lovely.

stuntnun sorry you had a tough time on that thread, some people are just horrid, horrid, jealous bullies.

Today
B Greek yogurt with teaspoon double cream
L eggs & avocado
D cottage pie with swede mash flgv

Lyrata · 04/02/2021 09:37

@RagzReturnsRebooted oh poor you! Sorry to hear that happened. I hope you feel better later (or have a good cry!)

I wonder if it’s just this lockdown situation? I think it’s wearing everyone’s emotional resilience thin. I sometimes get waves of sadness and anxiety about it all.

I’ve never had sadness or emotion around low-carbing before. Perhaps right at the very start I’ve had a moment where I feel frustrated and helpless that I can’t have my comfort foods/sugar but that fades very quickly. And I think it’s that sense of having lost something - previously I had the chocolate as an “activity” or comfort blanket and now it’s gone. But I usually find it easy to replace the greedy chocolate activities with far better, healthier cooking!

Ninkanink · 04/02/2021 09:41

@StuntNun I feel bad now for not jumping in to the thread yesterday but I just couldn’t as I wasn’t in the right headspace - ordinarily I quite enjoy a robust challenge to the idiots but it would have messed with my balance (hence my, admittedly rather self-serving, advice to hide the thread and save your sanity). I’m glad some of the gang showed up to support you!

StuntNun · 04/02/2021 09:42

Well done on your whoosh Almahart.

I know that feeling Lyrata. I do tapestry needlepoint and I have taken years to complete some pieces, especially the larger ones. For me it's all about the process, not the finished result. Maybe you should have another project lined up for when you finish the blanket.

Good luck with your cross stitch Pleaseandthankyou I love the effect but I always get the counting wrong and get cross with myself.

MaudesMum I eat kimchi as is. It's very good for your gut health. Waitrose sell a super green kimchi that's really spicy. Not sure it's what a Korean would call kimchi but it's lovely. Kimchi is nice with salad (think like coleslaw) or a burger (or both). I think you should be okay with your tomatoes yesterday. Yes they're a little higher in carbs than optimal but you'll never convince me anyone ever got fat eating tomatoes!

Dailyhandtowelwash another option is to buy frozen cauliflower florets, defrost them and then make them into cauli rice. It's a bit easier prep and better if you only want a small quantity if the rest of your family are stupid and don't like cauliflower for example.

Ninkanink · 04/02/2021 09:43

I wonder if it’s just this lockdown situation? I think it’s wearing everyone’s emotional resilience thin. I sometimes get waves of sadness and anxiety about it all.

Yes I think that could be it.

Flowers for you too, @RagzReturnsRebooted!

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 04/02/2021 09:51

MrsOmelette sorry you’re struggling, we’re here when you feel able to dip in to a safe space.

StuntNun glad AIBU calmed down! I’m finding Facebook much more snippy and judgemental than normal too.

RagzReturnsRebooted I’m bursting in to tears at everything and anything at the moment! I’ve put it down to just the underlying stress and tension of lockdown, worry about family, etc etc. Hope you feel better today.

The fasting talk is interesting, but I must admit I’ve started skimming over it! Having spent 30+ years just eating when I want to and leaving every plate clean, I’m trying very hard to lean in to this WOE. Training my body to know when it’s actually hungry and learning to listen to those feelings! Fasting is a bit of a distraction/red herring to me (don’t mind it being talked about, just skipping the talk!).

StuntNun · 04/02/2021 09:52

Ragz that could well be something like dropping blood sugar or some other consequence of changing your diet combined with other stresses. When had you last eaten and what was it? It is a difficult time though, so give yourself a break for feeling bad in response to a series of trying events.

Don't worry about it Ninkanink I had plenty of moral support. I was a bit taken aback at the victim blaming for what was essentially a chance accident.

BIWI · 04/02/2021 09:53

Sorry to hear all of the anxiety woes Sad

I suspect, very strongly, that it's the current climate/pandemic that's causing it. I've been suffering from stress symptoms too - recurring outbreaks of mouth ulcers, eye twitching and anxiety dreams - despite having a much more relaxed lifestyle, now I'm retired.

I think it's just important that we all recognise that there's little we can do about it (beyond staying safe/following the guidance, etc) and generally just try to be kind to ourselves - as well as each other.

@StuntNun sorry you were mauled on AIBU last night; I didn't get to that in time - but I think that's a very good example of how people are on short fuses right now. I know AIBU is renowned for being a bit of a bear pit, but all of MN seems a bit like that now. (Apart from here, obviously Smile)

Poor weather on top of all of this won't help - but hopefully spring is on the way. Amazing how a bit of sunshine can change things.

BIWI · 04/02/2021 09:55

@StuntNun I think a separate thread about fasting would be great, but I'm not really sure I know enough about it to lead one, so wonder if you'd be prepared to do that? I presume it would be linked to Bootcamp/low carbing?

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 04/02/2021 09:55

I bought daffodils this week to sit happily on the kitchen table as a little reminder that spring is on its way. I highly recommend it!

BIWI · 04/02/2021 09:57

@Bestbees

My target is 2.5l and I think to be honest I was probably already doing that, but upped it. On Tues I felt really rough and was drinking more and more water, adding salt and lemon but feeling worse. I wonder if I could be over doing it? I definetly got to 2.5l yesterday but focused on thirst. Wondered if adding the salt was making me more thirsty and then in a funny cycle. So keeping salt in my coffee, lots on my food and then only go for a salty water if I feel I need it

If you're using salt in your food, then I'd say - as long as you haven't got any carb flu symptoms - you don't need to go about adding it to your coffee or drinking salty water.

And just stick to your 2.5 litres if that's your target.

Flowers for Mrs O, Stunt and Ragz (and everyone else!).

DS2 once spent over £800 on Minecraft or similar. Apple refunded (without asking) even though it was mainly lax parenting that led to it. I was just before Christmas years ago and I still well up when I think of the relief. As for all those who were saying you should have read the Ts and Cs, I expect they've never tried to negotiate standard terms with a phone provider or similar. I did once as a very green lawyer. Didn't get me anywhere and now I never bother. I was only thinking the other day how bonkers AIBU is at the moment (more so that usual). Didn't say anything because didn't want to sound like one of the "I remember when all this were fields" lot.

Anyway, on a brighter note:
KLAXON the low-carb starter box has (mostly) arrived. I shall now post uninvited pictures.

Good Morning All - have been MIA over the last couple of days, as every spare minute has been working - My boss has decided to look at business oppertunities in Australia, , this seems to result in lots of zooms between 5 and 8am, usual days work till about 5pm, then "lets catch up with the Guys in the US" till about 10pm - Bloody knackered, hopefully the novelty subsides soon!!

On the plus food has been good, lots of boiled eggs, mashed with butter, cold cheeseburger pie, and kale crisps - not enough GV but at least its not toast and bowls of pasta which are my usual go-tos when work goes bananas.

@StuntNun - i'ver read the thread and wow, people are vicious, no help - but could you speak to the provider, and suggest a wipe of the funds due as a long standing customer, cap immediately, and re-sign a 3 year contract? they keep you as a customer, and show good customer service. I have no idea how these things work - so this could be the worst advise - sorry!

SO today will be:
L - Omelette, with bacon, peppers and spinach
D - Chicken with cauli rice - I can't get on board with shop bought, need to grate myself for the texture, thanks to who ever put the idea of blitzing the kale - will try that.
W - 4 litres and two coffees.

Inadvertently doing IF - seems fine, will keep going til Monday and reassess once I have weighed in!

I also need to iron (cutting edge excitement here!) have been looking at the pile since Saturday, and tomorrow is laundry day - DF likes structure and on Friday we wash clothes Grin.

KOKO

nowlook · 04/02/2021 10:10

Starting with the packaging, the frozen stuff and the meat. Disappointingly, neither the beef shin nor the belly pork was included. Those items have been refunded.

It was very well-packaged. Meals look good, but obviously haven't tried yet.

I've just ordered some stuff from there, thanks to your link @nowlook! I'm hoping that the bread is as tasty as it looks.

Now the pantry stuff and a couple of pages from the meal planner/ recipe book. The book looks interesting and reinforces @BIWI's approach. May stick them up as a ready-reckoner.

Ohhhh I love an unboxing thread (usually it’s handbags though Grin )!

Ratherchillyinhere · 04/02/2021 10:15

A sad thing happened yesterday...

I finally got around to making the cheeseburger pie for tea. We had it with a large green salad.

I didn't like it! 😔

I've had some leftovers cold for breakfast today and it's marginally better cold... the topping was just too 'eggy' I think.

nowlook · 04/02/2021 10:17

I'm very interested in the rye bread @BIWI. It isn't sliced and is begging for some bacon, egg and a big fat mushroom!

BIWI · 04/02/2021 10:20

Shock at not liking cheeseburger pie! Grin

Did you put enough cheese in the topping? Was it a strong-tasting cheddar? I think that would make a big difference. I've also been wondering if adding plastic cheese slices on the top would make it even more like a cheeseburger! It could, of course, just make it vile ...

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 04/02/2021 10:22

You can do liver pate on rye bread, too, with crispy bacon slices, sautéed mushrooms and some thinly sliced red onion.

Or fish pâté/mousse with home-pickled cucumber.

I’ve just bought a load of rye flour, mostly for DH to bake bread but I’ll have the odd slice here and there when I’m maintaining. Yesterday we looked at a recipe for Russian black bread which looked great. Rye bread also reminds me of home - love Danish smørrebrød (open faced sandwiches piled up with beautiful ingredients).

Ratherchillyinhere · 04/02/2021 10:24

It could, of course, just make it vile ...

My money would he on vile! Grin

I followed the recipe exactly. It seemed like an awful lot of cheese was going in.

Maybe another layer of grated cheese on top...

Such a shame, I was really looking forward it!

It is nicer cold for breakfast though.

BIWI · 04/02/2021 10:25

@nowlook does it have a carb count on the label? All that the website says is "Bread made using our low-carb flour, however, is less than 3% carbs and won't spike your blood sugar levels" which I'm assuming means less than 3g carbs per 100g.

Morning!

Interested in all the fasting chat. I 5:2-ed for a long time (after Michael Mosely's first doc was broadcast). I liked it, but didn't lose weight.

Thanks for @MrsOmelette. Anxiety is so awful. Mine was so bad last year my body kept shuddering all the time, but I'm fine now. All Feelings Pass is now my mantra. Glib, but true.

@nowlook nice box! (Oo-er).

@StuntNun I didn't look at your thread until this morning. You got a stupidly hard time from some. I feel a bit tin-foil hat about it, really. We know that MN has been regularly targeted by various groups since it became more high-profile, & I think some of them try to make sure they're the first to post on any AIBU. At least (when it was all fields Wink) you could be fairly sure the wankers were REAL, GENUINE wankers. Anyway, hope you get it sorted soon Thanks

Had roast duck with celeriac chips and pak Choi last night: it was LUSH
