Week 3 - Jan '21 Low Carb Bootcamp - time for Light?

BIWI · 31/01/2021 11:40

Well thanks to all the chat, I've had to start this week's thread earlier than usual Grin

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to declare all

You now have a choice: you can move on to Bootcamp Light, which means you can re-introduce nuts and seeds, some fruit and alcohol - all in moderation.

However, also bear in mind that weeks 3 & 4 are notorious for little or not weight loss and this is nothing to do with moving on to Bootcamp Light. It's just something that seems to happen.

So it's up to you. You can stay on Bootcamp if you wish, or move on to Bootcamp Light, or a hybrid - so you do Bootcamp during the week but relax into Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever you decide - good luck! Here's to a good week ahead.

@nowlook

Shag I was waiting for you to do the wk2 overspill thread! BIWI was quick off the mark this time though Grin
BIWI was standing by to repel the upstart, I reckon Wink

I made broccoli soup for lunch after Tesco interpreted our request for 1 head of broccoli as 1kg. Used a load of butter to cook the onion in to start with and then stirred half a Boursin into my bowl when I served it, it was bloody gorgeous. Two more large servings in the fridge for tomorrow and Thursday and then I'll make another batch with the other half of the broccoli! Supper's going to be meatballs and FLGV.

@kilojules I’m running on low carb and noticed that it may have been affecting my performance at first but as I became fat adapted it’s great. I can run 15 miles (marathon training secretly) with no need to slurp gels (yuk) and be confident that my fat stores can keep providing energy. No hitting a wall.

cheeseisthebest · 02/02/2021 19:22

Evening!

Those plates are lovely, I don't know much about Denmark although did go there to legoland when I was about 9.

Good day today, fasted until 12.30.
Lunch was similar to yesterday courgette and leek friend in butter with chicken and chicken skin then greek yoghurt and paprika on top.
Few prawns with a bit of cream cheese too (sounds strange but was nice!)
Just had dinner of cauliflower and green bean pasanda with cauliflower rice. Stirred some butter into the rice.
Had my 2.5 litres of water.

Also done half an hour on the rowing machine. Want to build myself up so I can start running again (although DH keeps telling me I shouldnt cos i always end up injured Sad)

cheeseisthebest · 02/02/2021 19:22

Fried not friend!!

kilojules · 02/02/2021 19:23

Energy slightly better although runs still far slower than my pre bc and more of a slug

For those who run/workout does it improve or is it worth having a small carby snack before exercise?

Yes it does improve. Don't have a carby snack beforehand otherwise you'll just undo all the work you've done so far to switch your body into burning fat!

A bit disappointed with the -0.5lb loss this week as stuck to plan, no cheating but it's in the right direction and I feel lighter, less bloated so it's what counts

It's still a loss!
👍🏼 will push on for now. And yes a loss is still a loss no matter how small

oscarandelliesdad · 02/02/2021 19:25

Just catching up now after a busy, not that productive day. Today has been the first day since starting that my mood and energy have dipped, having a pig of a period - really cramping , kids hate hub, cupboards were bare, guinea pigs were hassling the hell out of me, can't get hold of dh on the phone ( time difference) and had to make tablet for dd's family activity. Wanted to just dive into the vat of condensed milk... However, I did not. Compromised by buying a mini bottle of rioja and making a very gloopy butter chicken with sprinkled almonds on top. Bootcamp light today after all. Sorry for the moan. I know a lot of people have a lot more going on Flowers

kilojules · 02/02/2021 19:27
**@kilojules* - just to remind/reassure you: butter doesn't count as dairy* when you're going "dairy free" Smile

So absolutely no need to have margarine Grin - in fact, you're not suppose to have it as you're actively being encouraged to eat "clean" and unprocessed - and margarine is the exact opposite of that (plus often the "wrong" type of fats but I can't remember the technical detail so not even going to start to explain why Blush) Shock
Agree! Butter any day. Remember my old says of doing the "slimming clubs" and buying "I can believe it's not butter!" and floras extra light!
Confused like eating body cream 😆

That's great to hear @Jollyholibobs! Hopefully I'll be fat adapted in a couple of weeks.

Can we talk about fasting? I've never read up on it etc, so forgive the ignorance, but can you have 3 meals in your 8 hour window or is it just 2? Then when you fast do you drink herbal teas etc or is it just water?

Also, sorry to ask again but thread is moving so quickly.. can anyone please recommend a good almond flour?

Thank you!

Yup me!
kilojules · 02/02/2021 19:37

@oscarandelliesdad sounds like a tough day! Hope the kids settle quick and you can try and put feet up. Not easy juggling it all solo!

I did last week- turns out I needed more salt! Try adding some more to your supper and see if you feel better.
ZiggZagg · 02/02/2021 19:40

@ChristMyArse yes, black tea/coffee, water while fasting. I normally have 2 meals lunch and dinner. I have IF for about a year and never get hungry at breakfast anymore!

ZiggZagg · 02/02/2021 19:41

@ChristMyArse also Asda own almond flour is nice and not too pricy Grin

oscarandelliesdad · 02/02/2021 19:43

Thanks kilojoules Flowers. Haven't really spoken to another adult today. That was kind. Off to take my grumbling uterus and children to bed.

Lyrata · 02/02/2021 19:44

To continue the theme, I made some Norwegian cheese over the weekend - Brunost.

Suspect it might actually be quite carby but there isn’t particularly much of it. Snacked on it a fair bit today.

Other than cheese nibbling, the rest of the day was on plan. Found a bag of Cavolo Nero hiding in my fridge so added that to dinner.

I think with the addition of the Cavolo Nero I probably managed to take my dinner over 1kg of food which feels slightly greedy. I eat so much. Maybe was a cow in previous life and miss the cud. I hope one day this fabled low carb low appetite comes my way.

Sharing my dinner as it was super quick and tasty. Apart from the Mediterranean roast veg the rest of the meal was done in under 10mins which is great for a mid week post work quick dinner.
D: Pan fried Sea Bass with Veg and butter. And portion of roast veg
L: large greek salad with coconut alternative to feta(really tasty), avocado, olives, couple of sundried tomatoes dressed in olive oil.
S: roast salmon fillet

Lyrata · 02/02/2021 19:49

Anecdotally, @kilojules I find running easier when I’m somewhat fasted now.

If I run after a light meal (e.g. soup - which has some carbs in it) I find it harder and my heart rate is higher than if I run at my normal time - before dinner (so I won’t have eaten anything substantial for 5-6 hours). I only do 5k but I don’t need carbs at all.

Your dinner looks amazing!

kilojules · 02/02/2021 19:50

@oscarandelliesdad hope you get good rest and tomorrow is a better day!

@Motivateinmotion, @Ninkanink, @oscarandelliesdad, @DulcetMoans thanks for your kind wishes I do feel better today.

This was the first day in a week that I’ve had meals at mealtimes instead of eating whenever I was hungry so here’s the food diary:

B: one sausage and one egg
L: Barenaked noodles with FLGV and pork cooked in Pork fat
D: Leftover veg from yesterday, leftover pork, mushrooms and pakchoi stir fry

I did weigh myself in the morning and I am 59.3 kgs or 130.73lbs. Recording it here so that I remember when I update the spreadsheet. I’ve definitely lost some weight but not sure whether it’s bootcamp or the virus so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for next week.

kilojules · 02/02/2021 19:55

@Lyrata thanks! I used to mostly run fasted in the mornings and was ok with it.
The first couple when I started bc were pretty rough. Palpitations, legs like lead, felt ill, super slow. It's gotten a lot better now but I'm still not even close do my normal running pace. But hopefully in the next few weeks I'll start to see an improvement. I guess the most important thing is I'm moving!
Your dinner looks yum as well!! Love the roasted veg!

Almond flour - I bought mine from Holland & Barrett (when you could go out shopping Sad), but this one from Amazon looks OK? . I assume you want something fine, if you're specifying flour?

re fasting, there are lots of ways to do it - you don't just have an 8 hour eating window - it can be more or less than that. @StuntNun knows a lot more about fasting than I do, so I'm sure she can tell you - but essentially I believe you can eat as many meals as you want, as long as they're in your eating window.

OP posts:
StuntNun · 02/02/2021 19:59

ChristMyArse how long have you been following Bootcamp? It's best to make sure you're completely fat-adapted before introducing intermittent fasting. You can eat as much as you want during your fasting window. In fact there have been studies comparing isocaloric diets and you would lose more weight eating three meals within eight hours than within 12 hours even with identical calorie consumptions. Basically anything over 14 hours has health benefits. So start by going from e.g. 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. without food. As a rule of thumb you can have up to 50 calories during your fasting window so it's okay to have a cup of tea or coffee in the morning. Then gradually extend your fasting window to 16 hours and aim for at least three times a week. You can eat as many times as you want during your eating window. Over time most people move to two meals a day, usually lunch and dinner. I make sure I have a big lunch so I don't need to snack in the afternoon. Intermittent fasting gets easier with practice so it's definitely worth working your way up to it over time. But it only takes a couple of fasts to get the hang of it. What you'll find is that your hunger peaks at your normal breakfast time but then subsides again and you won't be hungry until lunch time. If you're feeling hungry then having a drink of water or tea or coffee is often all that's needed to keep you going. I do 16:8 most days but I'm not dogmatic about it. If I wake up really hungry then I'll have breakfast and it just isn't a fasting day.
