Week 3 - Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - 'full' or light?

BIWI · 26/10/2020 08:57

Morning all!

Here's The Spreadsheet as per

Hopefully you've had a good second week, and have settled down into Bootcamp ways by now, and any trace of carb flu is but a distant memory.

By now, if not already, you should be well into the switch from burning carbs to burning fat. You should be finding it much easier to go between meals without snacking, and should find your energy levels picking up, maybe even feeling like you've got more energy than you had before.

So as we start week 3, you have a choice: you can continue on Bootcamp if it's suiting you, or you can move to Bootcamp Light, which means:

 • you don't have to have three meals a day
 • you can have some fruit (berries)
 • you can have some nuts/seeds
 • you can drink some alcohol

Please not the use of the word some! This isn't carte blanche for you to go mad. Just remember, all these things will add a lot of carbs quite quickly - so it's very much in moderation.

You also need to know/remember that week 3 (and 4) is infamous for being the point at which weight loss slows - sometimes even stops - so this is another good reason to go easy when you relax things

A good compromise is to stay strictly Bootcamp during the week but Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever you choose, hope the results this morning are positive, and wishing us all good luck for the week ahead.

I'm sorry to hear that Sad. Here's hoping that she makes a swift and good recovery.

We've been discussing relative risks here this evening. DC2 moved out back in the early days of lockdown. His job means he has to go to work - can't WFH - so we were living with him for several weeks when he was working full time out of the home.

Now, of course, with the next lockdown, as he's moved out, we're not allowed to see him (unless we go out for a walk or something). The suggestion was made that he could simply come home for a meal once a week (to replace the evening that we all go out for dinner). Who would know, after all? To all intents and purposes, it's just a young man going home.

But DH and are are over 60, so deemed 'clinically vulnerable'. There is a risk to us, therefore, as he is out and about in the wider world, so could bring the virus to us.

Ultimately we agreed that we simply can't do it. It's too much of a risk. And had to remind ourselves that it's only 4 weeks. (At least that was what they said initially!).

I think all bets will be off at Christmas though!

EarlGreyHot hello NI neighbour!

@fizzfridays I'm so sorry to hear about your relative. I hope she turns a corner quickly.

Good luck everyone for tomorrow.

Takingontheundead · 01/11/2020 23:09
@Takingontheundead stop focussing on the calories!

It's a high fat and protein meal. Absolutely Bootcamp-friendly.

(But surely you wouldn't be eating half anyway?!)

We don't count calories on Bootcamp, remember? Smile
Of course I ate half 🤣 fucksake, i thought you knew me better by now BIWI haha

prettyscarybird · 01/11/2020 23:13

I made the cheeseburger pie tonight. I put on my big girl's pants and included very blitzed mushrooms in the mince mix .so that I couldn't taste them Grin Also include a blitzed carrot and leek in the mix (double quantity). Next time I think I might put in even more Worcestershire sauce.

My dad ended up coming over to ours for supper as his central heating has broken down Sad - but we now have a brand new boiler and radiators so have a toasty house Shock We were also able to enjoy a mains pressure shower (like a power shower Smile) before he arrived and then sit down with a glass of bubbly (in a thin shirt rather than multiple layers of jumpers Grin).

Dh and my dad enjoyed the cheese burger pie - and I only managed half a portion Shock I'd made a double batch, so it's just as well it apparently freezes well Wink

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 01/11/2020 23:14

My 70+ aunt who is bed bound in a care home caught covid a few months ago. She was treated with paracetamol for a week and recovered no issues.

Hopefully @fizzfridays it turns around to be good news, can happen.

My oldest DD works in a care home where there have never been any reported cases. She's disgusted at the practices in the care homes with Covid (she used to work in one where they now have loads of cases).

Her work - she never wears work clothes home, all work clothes are washed and sanitized on site. Her old home she sees old work colleagues going to work (in the home, not door to door carers) wearing their uniform with no extra protection for the residents.

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 01/11/2020 23:19

Obviously there are other factors, visitation etc.

I'm gutted. I was desperate for chocolate after my steak dinner and went looking. DP and my DS finished them all!! So I am on my way to bed still fully within bootcamp rules. Damn sniffing that bag of chocolate last night, I'm a quivering wreck!!

This is my 1st chocolate wobble since starting low carb weeks ago. WTF???

Anyway, I'm off to bed before I go hunt an almighty shop Confused

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 01/11/2020 23:20

*allnight... lol phone took ages to update my post so saw my spelling error upload in slow motion 😂

tea69 · 01/11/2020 23:32

Can someone please add me to the spreadsheet? I started at 167 and was 163 this week. Many thanks!

gillyweed · 01/11/2020 23:37

@AthelstaneTheUnready I've just checked your lovely spreadsheet (in preparation for tomorrow's weigh in!) And I've messed my weights up, I seem to have mixed stones and pounds and put a wrong starting weight in, very much in my favour!!! I think the cells are locked could you please put my original starting weight in of : 202.6. Thank you!

I am eternally hungry, could eat all the time. This is the first time in years I've been full and forgotten to eat meals, I feel like this could be a permanent change... Just hope the scales agree tomorrow!

EarlGreyHot · 02/11/2020 00:55

So sorry to hear about your relative fizzfridays, such a shock... we don't think of people in their 60s as "old" but the increased vulnerability to Covid throws a rather different light.

BIWI I hear you on the relative risks and agree everyone has some weighing up to do. My parents are early 60s with no particular health issues. We have formed a bubble of sorts with them. Not strictly by the rules but I certainly need to reassess that even limited contact with us increases their vulnerability.

DC3 (toddler) has spiked a temp tonight so we've booked him a test for the morning. I'm feeling anxious as my parents are still here and older DC are gutted at not getting back to school tomorrow. I have responded by sinking half a bottle of wine, a load of cheese and some nuts. Not expecting much progress on the scales tomorrow although resisting crackers and chutney with said cheese is a victory of sorts for me!

Takingontheundead - I nailed 1/2 cheeseburger pie last week. Still some work to be done on tuning into my satiety... and my willpower!

PS NigellaAwesome - hello there!

Totalshambles · 02/11/2020 06:46

So sorry to hear about your relative fizzfridays. Also to BIWI for having to take hard decisions, such a tough time. Not to get too political but its pretty maddening that we didn't use the option of an extended half term to try and get on top of this when schools would be closed for half of it anyway...and we are now trying to have some half baked option with universities and schools still going...

Anyway the weather and the scales are bringing me gloomy news. Up over a pound, probably not helped by some very sluggish digestive issues not helped by copious water, cauliflower, sprouts etc...Seems very unfair that a few raspberries and teeny bits of stuff like chia etc would result in a gain but I shall stop whining as its just nothing at all in any scheme of anything. Stricter week begins for me...

VeryLittleHowl · 02/11/2020 07:13

Another one here who can eat half a cheeseburger pie - cold!

AthelstaneTheUndeady · 02/11/2020 07:40

morning @tea69 and @gillyweed, you're all sorted now!

Superspecs · 02/11/2020 07:43

I hope your relative feels better soon @fizzfriday and your son is okay @earlgreyhot.

I've just had a disappointing weigh in where I am up 2lbs on last week. I had a bad day on Wednesday about thought there might be enough time to recover-apparently not! I also layed into the wine and berries a bit too much over the weekend I think and it is totm. Oh well. Koko.

MsAwesomeDragon · 02/11/2020 07:57

I've stayed the same this week, which is ok. It was half term week so I want at work and found it difficult to drink all the water, which I know is important. I'm back to school today, have already got a big bottle of water in the go, and have my low carb lunch packed and ready to go.

Takingontheundead · 02/11/2020 08:15

I don't know whether to get on the scales. I think they'll just make me sad if I'm not losing still

gillyweed · 02/11/2020 08:17

Thank you!

Takingontheundead · 02/11/2020 08:32

Yep. No movement. Infact it suggests a lb up. Sigh.

Saturday I had 4 streaky bacon. Half a med avo on salad with25g ceaser dressing (3g carbs)

Then beef stew (beef browned in butter) swede, carrot, shallots & a little bit of leek in beef stock and 50ml of Guinness (in whole pot which did 5 large portions)

Yesterday i had left over stew for breakfast and then cheeseburger pie with shredded lettuce, finelychopped tomatoes and radishes.

Any words of wisdom BIWI? Ive stayed off mfp for weeks. I'm not counting calories. Besides the stress slip up on friday I've been good as gold. I just seem completely stuck.

poorbuthappy · 02/11/2020 08:56

I've not had a good week. Up 2lbs, think I've just tipped over into the 3 week PMS for TOTM so am bloated and in pain.
I simply didn't eat or drink enough of the right things. So here's to another week everyone!

WitchWand · 02/11/2020 09:05

Takingontheundead Sorry to hear that things haven't moved for you this week. I hope you'll be ok next week. Sometimes I think this is a lot about staying the course and not giving up. I'm hoping this for myself too for the next few weeks. That's because I'm starting my 3rd week and I've been warned that I might not lose over the next couple of weeks.

WitchWand · 02/11/2020 09:09

This week I've lost 3 and a half pounds which is lovely. Nice too that I had some help with how to avoid cramps from BIWI and that made a big difference to last night's sleep. Thanks for that.

All the best with this next week poorbuthappy. Hope it's a better one for you.

BIWI · 02/11/2020 09:17

Week 4 chat thread is here

@Takingontheundead - don't panic! Read the opening of the week 4 chat thread - hopefully that will put your mind at rest.

How long since you first started low carb Taking? A lot of people experience an stall at around the six month mark of weight loss, no matter which method they use to lose weight. It's likely that you aren't doing anything wrong at all, it's just the way that weight loss occurs. I've seen people do an extended fast and not eat anything at all for three days and not lose any weight, then someone else has a cheat meal or goes on a bender and drops three pounds overnight. Basically your weight is about the worst way to measure your progress.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 02/11/2020 09:26

The link for week 4 is getting an error message. Is it just me?

BIWI · 02/11/2020 09:30

Very true. We also all have 'sticking points' - I'm stuck in one of mine right now! For some reason the body wants to stay where it is. It's a biological fact called homeostasis.

This piece here, copied and pasted from a mindfulness site is insightful:

The Sticking Points – Weight Loss Plateaus

By Dr. Rhonda Simpson, MD, CPC

Everyone who has tried to lose weight is familiar with this scenario: you start out like gangbusters. Your refrigerator and pantry are full of healthy veggies, lean proteins, and even some healthy fats like nuts and avocados. You make sure you eat your meals on time and plan to take your lunch every day. You never miss a day of exercise whether it’s an hour in the gym or walking at noon. You are weighing yourself at least once a day (and if truth be told, sometimes two or three times a day); you’re excited to watch the scale numbers as they drop.

And then it happens. It comes to a screeching halt. The numbers stop dropping. You wait a day and step on the scale again. Nothing. Perhaps a week goes by with no change… You feel frustrated and disappointed. You start thinking to yourself, “What’s the point?” “What am I doing wrong?” You feel ready to give up altogether.

Hitting a plateau is common. It can feel so frustrating! Know that you are not alone in this stage of weight loss! So what are we going to do? First thing; remember to stop and BREATHE! Remember that your body was designed to remain in balance. Your recent weight loss has thrown off that balance. Centuries of evolution to prevent starvation have resulted in a beautiful web- like structure of hormones that works to restore your body to homeostasis. Those hormones include the hormone leptin (which is partly responsible for helping you to feel full), ghrelin (which makes you feel hungry), cortisol (which increases fat stores and increases under stress), and insulin (which assists in energy metabolism). In addition to these hormones, a number of vitamins and minerals play an effect depending on current energy needs.

This complex web of hormones and nutrients ensure that you have the energy you need when you need it. How beautiful is that? Please spend some time appreciating the complexity of your body, and the fact that if you’re hitting a plateau everything is working as it should!

Now that you’ve stopped to breathe and recognize that our bodies are functioning as designed, what to do next? It’s time for some reflection. If you keep a food journal, take time to review it. Has anything shifted since you first changed your eating habits? Are you perhaps going out to eat more frequently? Perhaps that occasional cookie has become more common? It’s also time to look at your exercise habits. Are you still as active as you were at the beginning of your lifestyle changes?

Are you sleeping well? Perhaps the most overlooked reason for a weight loss plateau is actually increased stress, and therefore increased cortisol levels. Stress management in the form of mindfulness, other forms of meditation, yoga, or regular breathing practices such as heart-centered breathing can play a crucial role in lowering your cortisol levels.

It’s also important to decrease your weigh-ins. This seems counter-intuitive, doesn’t it? But consider this: we can to be addicted to the numbers on the scale. What do you feel as the number goes up? Down? The negative self-talk that often accompanies a plateau is stressful. It can cause increased cortisol, and therefore actually contribute to some weight gain! Weighing yourself daily to three times a day or more? Decrease the frequency to once per week. Remember that the weight loss will happen in its time. Continue your healthy lifestyle changes and your body will resume its weight loss.

So, if you find yourself at a sticking point during your weight loss journey, remember the following:

All is as it should be.
Don’t panic, stop and breathe!
Review your food diary, exercise plan, your sleep, and most importantly your stress management, to see if anything has changed.
Make time every day for play, laughter, and joy! If you are feeling overwhelmed please remember to reach out for help!!
