2020 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp. The first week!

Welcome all.

Well what a strange year this has been! If you're anything like me, food, meals and eating have been all over the place. And that's before we think about the booze.

I found lockdown an odd mix of feeling like I was on holiday but it was also the end of the world. So what was the point of worrying about my diet?

I am lucky, relatively, in that we don't have small children to worry about educating. We also have a nice house and garden, and as me and DH have recently retired, don't have to worry about work. So we were very much advantaged over many people.

But still, the diet/drinking was all to pot. And with the inevitable result.

So we're now in the run up to Christmas - traditionally a time when diets go out of the window, and we start to indulge ourselves. Who knows what's going to happen this year though?!

So with that in mind, it's a good time to try and be focused and aim to have a bit of discipline! This Bootcamp, as with most others, will last for 10 weeks, which will take us right up to Christmas week.

(I truly hope that we'll all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones, but who knows?)

With grateful thanks to @AthelstaneTheUnready, here is the Spreadsheet of Exceptional Fabulousness .

You should find that you're on the spreadsheet. A couple of things:

  • if you don't want to record your weight every week, that's absolutely fine. Just don't do it!
  • if you're not on it, just add your name to the bottom - don't try and re-alphabatize it - we'll sort it out later

The spreadsheet isn't just a place to record your weight though - have a good look at it, and the tabs - there's loads of information on there, including a veg carb counter and lots of stuff about low carbing in general. You'll also find Bootcamp rules there.

SomethingInTheWaySheCooks · 16/10/2020 11:39

Good grief - autocorrect - ketones!!

SomethingInTheWaySheCooks · 16/10/2020 11:40

My ds will be home for half term next week so am currently planning a menu for the family that is gluten and dairy free and low carb!

LemonSea · 16/10/2020 11:45

poorbuthappy that did make me laugh, can’t help unfortunately I really struggle with tech stuff. It took me 20 mins to input my weight.

I batchcooked spicy beef mince, have been eating this with roasted cauliflower for dinner. Tonight is salmon, mushrooms and a lot of spinach. Lunch is generally an omelette. I have a celeriac being delivered today as recommended on here.

I have a headcold, not exercising and eating really big portions, not sure if I’ve lost anything because of this, but it’s early days. Haven’t had any junk.

Rayna37 · 16/10/2020 11:55

Really enjoying the thread, lots of ideas and lots of fun.

I'm fancying a Miller & Carter too, if I eat out in the next few weeks it needs to be somewhere with decent sides so I can trust myself to dodge the chips; we have lots of great local independents but they're either too tempting to go off track or not sure enough I'll get good LCHF plentiful veg.

I have noticed a trend and it's both obvious but also a revelation Grin I'm a daily weigher and for the last few weeks I've swum then had a late breakfast two/three times a week and the weigh-ins the following day have been significantly lower than those after the non fasting/exercise days. Often drops of 1.5-3lbs, then more likely to be very small loss, static or gain the day after. I'll keep my eye on this!

ShagMeRiggins · 16/10/2020 12:03

This...

We've got 5 google accounts now in this house and I'm quite sure 1 day I'm going to post my weight on a child's maths homework or something.....

and this...

I love laundry products they take me to my happy place

...have basically made my morning. Grin

Feeling a bit shit but that’s attitude, thing physical, and purely due to The Hormoaners’ behaviour.

As my uncle once said, “I didn’t enjoy my adolescence, nor anyone else’s.” Yup.

ShagMeRiggins · 16/10/2020 12:10

That should say “nothing physical,” not “thing physical.” Hmm

And despite bad attitude, I had an extremely pleasant exchange with my scales this morning. Won’t jinx anything by writing a number, but this really motivates me for Monday in the hopes of—finally—a great first week number.

Off to buy ingredients for this fabled Cheeseburger Pie.

Drink the water, y’all!!!

20bloodypounds · 16/10/2020 12:11

DH has hung it up in the kitchen as if we are some sort of micro pub !
Grin
If it was a micro pub from the 70s taking the bags of it would gradually reveal a picture of a topless barmaid Shock along with cans of Tennent's lager with photos of the lager lovelies Thank goodness some things have changed, although as a child I had a secret ambition to be a lager lovely when I grew up.

@Notwatchingtvtoday This 'cheese and peas' curry is one of my favourites. I use halloumi instead of paneer, and replace most of the peas with a lover carb veg, such as green beans, and chuck in some spinach. not much help for using your lamb

20bloodypounds · 16/10/2020 12:12

off not of [bush]

20bloodypounds · 16/10/2020 12:12

and Blush Blush not bush!

20bloodypounds · 16/10/2020 12:14

and lower carb veg... [sigh!]

gets on with writing report and makes mental note to proof read it properly before I send it

Notwatchingtvtoday · 16/10/2020 12:22

all 20bloodypounds I would avoid any mention of -your- bush in your report 😀😀😀

@SomethingInTheWaySheCooks

Hubby and I are doing well so far. He is fully on board, so that helps. I am getting a bit fed up with cooked things at breakfast time though. Longing for a bowl of cereal or a peanut and banana smoothie! I have tried Greek yoghurt with cinnamon and liked that. It tasted very creamy. Overall weight is going down and I don’t especially feel hungry, even at meal times, so end up eating at very odd times! I did a urine test before I started and again today and keystones are now showing up - I have a pink block!
You don't have to have cooked things for breakfast! You don't have to have any particular kind of food. It's Mr Kellogg's and his like who have conditioned us to believe that breakfast = different foods from other meals.

Glad the weight is going down, and if you're not feeling hungry, that's a sure sign that it's working for you. That's all you need! You don't need to waste your money on ketostix, because if you're drinking all the water you should be, they won't really show up anyway.

Good news that your husband is doing it along with you. That always makes it easier.

Go and check out the Bootcamp recipe threads - you're sure to find something there!

Although that's actually a pretty easy challenge - how about roast chicken with (low carb) roast veg? Or shepherd's pie, with a celeriac and leek, or cauliflower, mash? Or steak with salad and celeriac or swede chips?

As they say, the possibilities are endless ...

I've just spotted that Teapigs have a limited addition Gluhwein teabag out (for all the tea lovers and those missing a tipple). It says they are only 3 cals per teabag, and no added sugar, so they should be ok I think. Just cant figure out what the various "flavours" might be, or if they might contain sweetener.

List of Ingredients:
Hibiscus, Apple, Clove Buds, Ginger, Cardamom Pods, Orange Peel, Blueberry, Chicory Root Roasted, Cinnamon, Acid: Citric Acid, Sangria Flavouring, Eggnog Flavouring, Natural Cinnamon Flavouring with other Natural Flavours

Does that sound ok? I normally just go for basic fruit or herb teas.

StuntNun · 16/10/2020 13:36

I can't remember who suggested the low carb corned beef hash made with celeriac cubes instead of potato but I had it for lunch with a fried egg on top and it was bloody lovely. Quick, easy and cheap too. Good call whoever you are!

MEEEEEE!!!!!

Even better with diced shallots added in the fry up, but I’m so glad you liked it, StuntNun.

Hopeislost · 16/10/2020 14:10

@SomethingInTheWaySheCooks Gluten free and low carb go hand in hand! I'm gluten intolerant and doing low carb and my husband is lactose intolerant so we eat like this all the time!

Things I regularly make include vegetable tray bakes (with chicken legs or salmon pieces on top), cottage pie with swede on top, fish pie made with almond milk and celeriac on top, chicken wings and homemade coleslaw, homemade kebabs (kofta or shish), sausage casserole (low carb sausages tend to be gf as well) with veg mash.

Searchesforhipbones · 16/10/2020 14:11

yum yum i am SO having that corned beef and celeriac! I have them both in the house!

So I had by and large begun fasting (not eating breakfast or anything until at least 12) and had cut out all kinds of sugar for about three or four months... I can't believe how much easier this week has been, i normally fail at about day 4, but I've realised it's not carb flu (i.e. lack of electrolytes) but serious sugar withdrawal!

GorgeousGoldies · 16/10/2020 14:19

Having lurked my way through 2 previous pre-Christmas Boot Camps, I thought I’d come out of hiding this year (feel a bit stalkerish as I feel like I know lots of you already! )

Managed to lose 1.5 stones each time, but I am a terrible sugar addict and stress eater, so it creeps back on through the year. Still, knowing I’ve got a method that really works is brilliant, and I know that come October I can take myself in hand.

Smoked salmon with buttery scrambled eggs, celery and cucumber for greenery, and later roast chicken with garlicky mayonnaise and salad later.

I’m in the second week and have had a good loss already, now need to keep focussed as I’m going to be in Cornwall next week (deliberately not referring to what I will be avoiding there!)

Having stalked in the past, I’d just like to say thank you to BIWI and the other regulars who have inspired me each time 😊 Plus it’s a little pocket of kindness and supportiveness on a sometimes slightly bonkers forum!

Anotherducker · 16/10/2020 14:21

@Choccorocco thanks for the info. I ordered some of the Zero electrolyte tablets that @BIWI linked the other day and they’ve come today.

@ShagMeRiggins and @BIWI for the IBS encouragement, I have IBD as well, but that is inactive, the IBS is almost always caused by bad diet or stress in my case.

Lunch-bacon and scrambled eggs
Dinner- shepherds pie without the topping and the other half of last nights cabbage.

Feeling on top of the world today. Acne is clearing, feeling positive and not hungry at all. PP who mentioned getting into a cycle where you binge sugar for weeks really resonated with me. Makes you feel like crap, but so hard to stop. Anyway it’s lovely to share the support in here so thank you!

PastramiNoRye · 16/10/2020 14:35

@Montybojangles that tea sounds delicious! I love their peppermint tea.

ShagMeRiggins · 16/10/2020 14:41

GorgeousGoldies that’s such a lovely post.

I’ve long suspected that BIWI and crew have reached far more than the hundreds who have signed up and benefitted from Bootcamp over the years.

Sometimes I’m gobsmacked that this is all free, then I think BIWI & StuntNun ought to collaborate on a Bootcamp Book to reap some rewards for their time and emotional investment in everyone’s health.

It’s a lovely thing.

GorgeousGoldies · 16/10/2020 14:58

ShagMeRiggins obviously you are one of the regulars I was referring to - I think we share the same sense of humour!

Agree that the organisers should be rewarded for their hard work, it must be incredibly time-consuming. Will a 🥇 and a 😇 do?
