2020 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp. The first week!

Welcome all.

Well what a strange year this has been! If you're anything like me, food, meals and eating have been all over the place. And that's before we think about the booze.

I found lockdown an odd mix of feeling like I was on holiday but it was also the end of the world. So what was the point of worrying about my diet?

I am lucky, relatively, in that we don't have small children to worry about educating. We also have a nice house and garden, and as me and DH have recently retired, don't have to worry about work. So we were very much advantaged over many people.

But still, the diet/drinking was all to pot. And with the inevitable result.

So we're now in the run up to Christmas - traditionally a time when diets go out of the window, and we start to indulge ourselves. Who knows what's going to happen this year though?!

So with that in mind, it's a good time to try and be focused and aim to have a bit of discipline! This Bootcamp, as with most others, will last for 10 weeks, which will take us right up to Christmas week.

(I truly hope that we'll all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones, but who knows?)

With grateful thanks to @AthelstaneTheUnready, here is the Spreadsheet of Exceptional Fabulousness .

You should find that you're on the spreadsheet. A couple of things:

  • if you don't want to record your weight every week, that's absolutely fine. Just don't do it!
  • if you're not on it, just add your name to the bottom - don't try and re-alphabatize it - we'll sort it out later

The spreadsheet isn't just a place to record your weight though - have a good look at it, and the tabs - there's loads of information on there, including a veg carb counter and lots of stuff about low carbing in general. You'll also find Bootcamp rules there.

Bit scared to weigh myself. Dinner was turkey mince fried with half an onion, courgette, green pepper, cauliflower rice, tin tomatoes and fajita seasoning. DH ate two thirds of it but mine was served with half an avocado and a dollop of sour cream. Still can't quite get my head around the idea that eating cream won't make me fat! Years of diet conditioning to undo.

BIWI · 15/10/2020 09:55

It's hard, isn't it @MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously?

It's really true that eating fat won't make you fat.

However, it's also true - sadly - that some people find that dairy impacts on their weight loss. I know, for me, that if I'm eating cream I don't lose (or the rate of loss is lower).

So just keep an eye on that - while eating plenty of other fats!

Morning all, I've woken up with a terrible sore throat and sound all husky and sexy DH said Wink other than that I feel lighter and more awake.

DS has to self isolate from nursery as one of his bubble has tested positive for COVID, nursery wears him out I'm terrified having to entertain him for two weeks without going out as he is too energetic Confused so ordered a trampoline for him!

I'm fasting until lunch when I'll have eggs and avocado and beef casserole for tea.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Rayna37 · 15/10/2020 10:34

MrsHunt you will get used to it, especially once you start seeing results! Did you check the fajita seasoning (assuming bought) as it can contain sugar.

Easy cheap DIY fajita spice mix for everyone:
1tsp each of chilli powder, paprika, garlic powder/granules, cumin, oregano, salt and with a good grind of black pepper.

prettybird · 15/10/2020 10:58

Doilooklikeatourist - you will get that lovely waist back and those pictures are going to be a fantastic visual motivation. Thanks

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 15/10/2020 11:05

@Rayna37 Bugger, it does contain sugar. It didn't occur to me that it would. Thank you for the alternative fajita mix recipe.

Biwi, have eaten a bacon, mushroom and tomato omelette, fried in butter and rosemary and with some grated cheese for breakfast, but I will avoid dairy for the next couple of days just in case I've had too much. Thank you for the tip

Morning , another who slept well.
shagmeriggins thanks for making me laugh

After the blip of the salad dressing, (To sweet etc) in a restaurant yesterday, I felt quite derailed, but managed to cling on to the plan.

Psychologically, it is a difficult feeling when something you order is not as you want it to be, thinking about it, it must be the lack of control that contributes to feeling so derailed. A bit of me felt like I had blown it, so I might as well give up, which was actually ridiculous, as it was only a small amount of salad dressing, it was a totally out of proportion response. Fortunately because of this thread , I managed to override those negative thoughts and carry on, but I am acknowledging that I had them, in the hope that I start to understand the very negative effects they can have, it is definitely food for thought, pardon the pun 😀.

In today’s news London is moving to the second tier, I feel like having a really good moan, but I’m going to try and be positive and I’m going to buy a really, really warm coat !

Last night I made a fab beef stew in my instant pot, I’ve been craving warming hearty meals. I browned 1 onion & 1 carrot in both olive oil and butter. Then I added lots of mushrooms, 1 beef stock pot thing from Knorr, 1 tsp of tomato purée, a shake of paprika, 800g of frozen braising steak, (which I put straight in the pot from the freezer) and 200ml of water. I Put the lid on and pressure cooked it for 30 mins, then let the pressure release on its own which took about another 30 mins. I had to reduce it slightly, (I think because of the water in the mushrooms) then I just let it sit in the pot on warm until I was ready to eat. I served it with cauliflower cheese, buttered cabbage and buttered swede. It was very easy as just bunged it in and pushed a button.

Today
B Greek yogurt & Tsp cream
L left over beef stew & swede mash
D some kind of pulled meat or beef rags with homemade coleslaw

Water, water, water, I’ve already drunk 1.5l , so half way ...

Takingontheworld · 15/10/2020 11:52

I've searched but not too sure if I'm just too tired, but can't see the burger pie thingy recipe.

I also am now massively craving a beef stew and cauli cheese!

Margaritawithlime · 15/10/2020 11:56

Can we have bell peppers?? Will go and have a look. I have mince to use up so was going to make like a cheesy mince stuffed pepper thing.

Takingontheworld · 15/10/2020 12:07

Green ones are lowest carb. X

StuntNun · 15/10/2020 12:13

Margarita I like this Diet Doctor recipe for stuffed pepperss*

prettybird · 15/10/2020 12:14

I'm going to admit that I haven't managed to resist daily weighing, despite my plan to move to weekly Blush

But the good news is that I've been 12st 4lb for the last two days ShockHalo That's half a stone since Monday! ShockSmile

Yes I know almost all of that is water Wink

I've checked back to to the equivalent Boot Camp thread last year and I'm at least 2 weeks "better" than I was then. So I should manage to achieve my goal of being under 11 and a half stone by Christmas Xmas Smile

Totalshambles · 15/10/2020 12:15

The cheeseburger pie, stews, fajita mixes and pulled meat ideas sound great!

I adore the Brussels in butter and salt! So good! That was lunch along with half a pack of m&s prosciutto and cheese rolliethings. And some Greek yogurt.

Do we get peanut butter in week 3? Was jealous of that when was making the kids toast..!

IncurablyCurious · 15/10/2020 12:15

You lot are blimmin lovely. After posting the first of the covid-onion moans yesterday, I got a massive sleep, which seems to have sorted me right out. I swear I'm like a child sometimes; should have just taken myself for a nap Blush

Thank you @ShagMeRiggins @MsAwesomeDragon & @NigellaAwesome - I did have a lovely time with my mum, and having seen the news today about London, am so happy we managed to fit it in. And FlowersFlowersFlowers for others who had a bad onion day. Hope things seem better for everyone today.

My desire to drink water is right down, annoyingly - think I feel a bit oversaturated. Going to try a second coffee and whack some lemon into the water bottle to make it a bit more exciting.

Plan:
B: Coffee w/ bit of whole milk x 2, heck 97% sausage as a snackette.
L: Spinach and smoked mackerel salad.
D: Samphire and salmon in a parsley cream sauce, with baked cheesy leeks and asparagus

Margaritawithlime · 15/10/2020 12:19

@StuntNun thats exactly what I fancy!!! Thank you!!

poorbuthappy · 15/10/2020 12:24

@prettybird WOW!!!!

StuntNun · 15/10/2020 12:35

@Totalshambles nut butters are allowed from week 3 but it's worth doing a bit of label reading to find the lowest carb one as some have extra ingredients other than just nuts and salt. I think almond butter is lower carb than peanut butter at about 6.5g carbs per 100g. Clearly portion size is key because nut butters are higher in carbs than ideal (we want to stay below 5g carbs per 100g) and they're extremely calorific. It's far too easy to overeat on nuts and nut products so treat them with caution once we're into Bootcamp Light. I find I have to weigh them out to get a good portion size.

Totalshambles · 15/10/2020 12:59

@StuntNun thanks so much that’s really useful!

Rayna37 · 15/10/2020 13:15

I can't wait to go back to a teaspoon of almond butter in my Greek yogurt after my lunch! But, it really hasn't killed me to go without and I think I'll try to limit it until I'm maintaining.

Scrambled eggs for breakfast - I did three which was fortunate as the toddler insisted I shared...
Snack of a small chunk of manchego cheese
Lunch was really nice - the usual salad livened up with chicken, a sprinkling of grated parmesan and some Caesar sauce. I use Cardini's Original Caesar- processed rubbish I'm sure but very tasty and only 1.9g of carbs. Small portion of yogurt with a dollop of thick cream.
Dinner will be pork chops with some sort of creamy mustard & shallot sauce, brussels, broccoli and cavolo nero.

ShagMeRiggins · 15/10/2020 13:43

Rayna I’m a Cardini’s Caesar dressing fan as well. It’s by far the closest in taste to what I’ve experienced with home made and in restaurants.

I don’t care if it’s processed—it might be, I don’t know—it’s not as though I’m drinking 3L of it during the day, unlike...

WATER! WATER! WATER!!

Two months into this woe I find myself getting thirsty very quickly, I assume because my body expects so much. It makes it much easier to remember to drink

Just had my 2nd brunch out in 2 days; I thought I'd chosen well yesterday but I was up 1.5lb this morning possibly for the first time. Not good

Is black pudding okay? The internet seems divided

@stuntnun can you please explain your post about your app and the two lines again, I'm sorry I'm just not getting it

StuntNun · 15/10/2020 13:54

Oneborn black pudding is pretty high carb unfortunately. Better saved for weight maintenance. My graph was showing the jump in weight that happens around my period. You have to look at the dotted line of my actual weight to see it. The app I use, True Weight, also charts your average weight over time on the graph - the solid line - which illustrates why these apps are so useful: they let you see the overall trend in amongst the ups and downs. Happy Scale does the same thing, and also works out when you'll reach your goal weight, or you can set mini-goals along the way.

If you're drinking a lot and still thirsty, this is a sign that you need more sodium.

Black pudding is generally not ok! Look at the ingredients - generally contains oats and barley as well as flour and wheat. The ons I checked on Sainsbury's website varied from 11.9g to 18.8g carbs per 100g.

Has anyone tried the skinny food co, low carb bread mix? It says 2.5g carbs per roll, so I have halved the roll, making more at 1.25g per roll. They are delicious with some full fat Philadelphia on.
