Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - last weigh-in!

BIWI · 03/08/2020 07:19

Morning all

Very much looking forward to finding out how everyone has done so here's the Spreadsheet for its last outing

I had hoped, when I started this Bootcamp, that we would have left lockdown properly by now, rather than being in this weird kind of limbo that we find ourselves in. But hopefully it has achieved its objective, of getting us all a bit more focused and healthy, rather than just eating and drinking ourselves to death before the virus could do that!

We will, of course, carry on - I'll keep the thread going and when it's finished, we'll start another one. Just because the ten weeks is up doesn't mean that the diet has ended Grin

Here's to a good result on the scales this morning Flowers

@Oneborneverydecade As @BIWI says, eating out is easiest when you look at the menu beforehand and aren't afraid to ask for changes to your meal.

I've been out for a few meals recently. I went to an Indian and had tandoori lamb chops and palak paneer. I also went to an Italian this week and had burrata to start and grilled sea bass (I asked for extra veggies instead of potatoes) for my main. And a cappuccino when everyone else had dessert!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 24/08/2020 09:30

Morning, everyone.

Am back again, like a bad rendition of the hokey cokey.

Still struggling with movement due to my arm, but going for a slow steady series of changes. Am 2lbs down from the beginning of the month, so will gratefully take that with one hand.

Oneborneverydecade · 24/08/2020 10:24

Thank you @BIWI and @Hopeislost Smile I did check the menu for Wagamamas - was just thrown when not everything was available in the restaurant

This weekend isn't going to be as easy as food stalls menus are a bit more ad hoc and so not online. I have discovered that there will be Buddha bowls with a no carb option - yay!

Thank you for all of the different menu options - I'll feel a bit more confident eating out in the future!

devoncreamtea · 24/08/2020 11:17

Great tips re eating out - I hardly ever go out but have had a few takeaways with varying success (ie prawns turned out to be in a crunchy coating?!?) so good tips to have up sleeve.

In excellent news - I have managed the 16:8!!! I don’t why it was such a barrier for me, but have been merrily fasting from 7 at night until 12 noon. The only Issue I now have is whether to eat breakfast stuff or lunch stuff...!
I am interested to see if makes a difference to my weight loss (which tends to be very sloooow), but at the moment I am working on trying to reframe making changes to my lifestyle as for my health rather than weight loss. Obviously it’s always really been about that, but I think I have got a bit fixated on weight.
I am also taking up kettle bells and have admitted to myself that I HATE running and therefore will never be a runner! Well actually more accurately - I hate long distance running. I love a bit of sprint and a game of rounders etc but the plodding for miles is my idea of hell and just makes me want a reward!

Don’t know if these things count as NSVs but Anyway I am pleased to be focussing on mindset rather than scales! On scales news though, back up to 163 today from a low of 158. So continuing to bounce about wildly 😬

NoraEphronsneck · 24/08/2020 11:32

Morning Devoncreamtea you'll be pleased to know you've actually done 17:7 so an even bigger achievement Grin

I've stayed exactly the same weight for 3 weeks now so may go back to stricter bootcamp.

My NSV is that I have definitely narrowed width-wise from my shoulders down. My underwrites bras actually have gap on the sides so will have to treat myself to some new ones.

Bizarrely didn't eat anything at all yesterday. Not by design just had no appetite at all, despite cooking roast dinner for everyone else. Didn't feel hungry at all and haven't eaten yet today. Strange feeling.

Laska2Meryls · 24/08/2020 16:29

Ive had a week off and am ready to go again.. My week off has just been veggie carbs ( no bread pasta etc) - a few spuds and sweetcorn and being more lax with the wine. Am a pound up .. can cope with that , but have just booked a holiday ( first one in our new campervan that we bought just before lockdown!).. for mid September in Northumberland .. so I need a couple of really strict weeks first !..

StuntNun · 24/08/2020 19:18

I'm back home from a minor jaw surgery and finding even soft food harder to eat than I thought. DH made baked cod (skinless and boneless), mashed celeriac and soft-fried courgettes which was okay. Does anyone have any suggestions, other than soup?

BIWI · 24/08/2020 22:07

@StuntNun How about some cauliflower cheese, blended up? (May need to cook the cauliflower so it's a bit softer than you might normally prefer)

BrassicaBabe · 25/08/2020 09:59

Ouchee Stunt that sounds nasty.

Laska you had a week off and only put on 1lb?!! Hats off to you!!

I'm cursing my one day off and the 4lbs on. And why why why is it NEVER "one day on, one day off"?!

StuntNun · 25/08/2020 10:34

Ooh I love cauliflower cheese BIWI. Your recipe involves double cream doesn't it? The only problem is I've only got nasty 30% reduced fat cheese that got bought by accident. It doesn't melt right and it doesn't taste of anything.

BIWI · 25/08/2020 10:40

Yes - 300ml double cream and as much lovely mature, full fat cheddar cheese as you can get into it!

Send DH to the shops ...

Checking in - lots of houseguests and finding it hard to cater to children, low carbers and vegetarians but making the best choices I can.

Takingontheworld · 25/08/2020 13:53

ok so i thought i could quietly get back on track by myself, without having to come back here and admit to my sins and take my stick beating but it looks like I need you lot. So here I am. Tail between my legs. Epic failure that I am.

Wednesday to Sunday was a shit show of the highest order. Self loathing is weighing heaviest on me, though my scales are just screaming "knew it! You quitter!" So they're away for now whilst I just focus on one meal at a time.

Back on it since yesterday but sugar come down/ re-withdrawl is harrrrd. Desperate to get back to happy body, happy mind I get from the WOE.

Off to legoland on w.e any top tips would be very grateful so I can be as prepared as possible please!

StuntNun · 25/08/2020 15:48

Taking don't beat yourself up about it happens to all of us. Clamber back on the wagon and back to eating healthily. Legoland has loads of good areas for picnics so take food with you. Also the queue for the Viking River Ride moves very quickly so it's not as long a wait as it looks. Wink

Oneborneverydecade · 25/08/2020 17:21

Start at the back as those rides are often the quietest when it opens. Get a queue buster. Can't help with the food sorry

NigellaAwesome · 25/08/2020 17:27

Hello, I got back from my hols a few weeks ago, and fell off the wagon a bit. Anyone willing to give me a hand up?

devoncreamtea · 25/08/2020 17:46

Slinging a rope overboard to all those who have fallen off! You can do it! Just one meal at a time - and drink lots of water! Start with breakfast - have your eggs/bacon etc maybe don’t fast until your back into it again; make sure you’ve restocked all Your usual go to’s so if you get hungry you can eat greek yog or whatever - and most importantly - don’t restock anything you shouldn’t eat. I made the mistake of buying a bottle of prosecco and treats for my daughter to celebrate together for her results. Did I manage to keep them in the cupboard? No I did not! 😳 So put temptations out of your way!!

Takingontheworld · 25/08/2020 20:34

I fast every day 16:8 and I'm starting to wonder if the benefits are lost if you do it every day? Does anybody know?

NigellaAwesome · 25/08/2020 21:27

Thanks Devon.

Good idea about the bacon and eggs. The thing is, I love this way of eating, I really do. It makes me feel great, and I lose my appetite. So I'm not sure why I am mainlining biscuits?

I developed thrush for the first time in about 15 years. I think it is because I have been having carbs.

Right, tomorrow is another day!

BIWI · 26/08/2020 08:19

@Takingontheworld

I fast every day 16:8 and I'm starting to wonder if the benefits are lost if you do it every day? Does anybody know?
If by 'not seeing the benefits' you mean you're not losing weight, surely that's because you've fallen off the wagon?!

The whole point of fasting is that it allows your body to heal itself when it's not having to focus on 'processing' food - so that will remain the case no matter how long you're fasting for.

Glad you're back, and we're always here for support and a beating!

BIWI · 26/08/2020 08:20

Welcome back @NigellaAwesome. @devoncreamtea is right - just climb back on the wagon - make sure you haven't got any temptation to hand and plan your meals rigorously for the next week.

OP posts:
StuntNun · 26/08/2020 08:43

Welcome back Nigella you've got this. Can you plan for some of your favourite low carb meals for the next few days. Also if you're having any carb cravings then you may need extra snacks. Remember that it's harder to eat bad food when you're full of good food. I like to cook extra boiled eggs or chicken legs and keep them in the fridge for snacks. A couple of eggs with some mayo will fill anyone up no matter what! That reminds me that when I first went low carb I used to keep a pack of Peperamis in the car "for emergencies!" Not a bad habit to begin really as they're handy in a pinch.

Taking it's fine to fast 16:8 every day. What benefits do you think you might be missing out on. The big advantage of adding intermittent fasting into a low carb way of eating is that it should help to bring your body set weight down over time, according to Dr Jason Fung. This means you'll me less likely to regain the lost weight in the future. The only thing I would wonder about is that your body gets used to your usual diet and changing things up can be beneficial. So you could try a 24-hour fast followed by a day of eating three meals then go back to 16:8 and see how that makes you feel. I do 16:8 almost every day but sometimes I do eat breakfast, if I'm feeling particularly hungry that day, and sometimes I do a longer fast and just see how long I get to before I want to eat again. I have noticed that my hunger levels have changed since doing this and I actually find fasting easier than I used to. If you fancy giving it a try then I suggest doing your usual 16:8 the first day so lunch and dinner, then do a 24-hour fast to dinner the next day. It doesn't have to be an absolute fast if you want to have a couple of cups of tea or a bone broth. Then the third day eat three meals and get back to 16:8 again on the fourth day. How does that sound?

Takingontheworld · 26/08/2020 09:24

Sorry wasn't very clear! Yes not specifically for weight loss alone, I've never fully looked into the claimed benefits for fasting... in fact i can't quite recall how or why I ended up doing 16.8 but i wondered if at some point your body just settles into it as a normal eating pattern and changing things up helps somehow?

I honestly think I'd keel over if i tried a 24 hour fast working nights and trying to look after my kids all day Grin

I generally eat no later than 5/6pm on work nights and no later than 8pm on nights off...

Oneborneverydecade · 26/08/2020 09:57

I thought I'd read/seen on Diet Doctor that they recommended not sticking to the same hours for your 16:8 and to mix it up a bit? I have been sticking to the same hours though so no idea if it helps? (admittedly only been at it for a month Grin)
