Low Carb Bootcamp Ordinaire - Week 3

BIWI · 08/06/2020 07:15

Morning all!

The start of a brand new week. Hopefully it will be a better week - emotionally/psychologically - for us all.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to record your progress.

Hopefully we've all had a good couple of weeks, food and weight wise.

Be warned that we're now in week 3. Many, many, many low carbers (not just Bootcampers) find that the weight loss can slow or stop in this week (and also week 4)

If this happens to you DON'T PANIC! If you've been losing so far, then you know it works. Just KOKO (keep on keeping on) and things will get going again soon.

Good luck to us all [ flowers]

Pleased today as DH has said he is going to stick with me on the low carbing which I think will make it much easier. He had promised to do two weeks, but was complaining about missing sweets and chocolate, but has had a change of heart!

He hasn't got weight to lose really but he is normally into the gym so feels his figure has softened a bit during lockdown. It will be nice to not have the temptation as well as not feeling like he is rolling his eyes at my low carb grub!

Freetodowhatiwant · 10/06/2020 00:36

Can you make me some @prettybird and send it round...? I am a terrible cook but that sounds great!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 10/06/2020 07:33

Numbsmet, I think you're already leagues ahead of a lot of people. Here you are, on the internet, having identified something you'd like to improve, decided on a method, committed to a trial, supporting others who have joined you, getting good results, and generally being a helpful and nice person to be around.

And there they are, on the internet, making spiteful comments.

You really shouldn't be the person feeling sad in this scenario.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 10/06/2020 07:40

I have the feeling that weight, as a metric, is having a big game with me this bootcamp.

I weighed this morning and am now back to just 1lb less than starting weight. But my inches remain lost, my face is still slimmer and less creased, my stomach is flatter and massively smaller, and my thighs are most definitely gaining shape and definition.

In summary, I look startlingly different at this weight than I looked at this weight two weeks ago. Confused

The only thing I can think of is that I've started doing more body weight exercises for the week - but nowhere enough to build 5lbs of muscle!

I'm usually a die-hard daily weigher, but this is disconcerting me so I think I may try weekly, and perhaps measure instead if I feel the need to check inbetween weeks.

BIWI · 10/06/2020 08:01

@NumbsMet

melting cream cheese sounds like a very good plan! I remember you mentioned that we shouldn't include too much cream in this woe so that was mainly why, but also I did check how many calories were in cream during week 1 and now I feel uncomfortable eating it

Please, please, please don't fixate on the calories or the fat. That's NOT what Bootcamp is about. The only point of calorie counting in week 1 was to act as a mechanism to get our heads back into the right place, so we could focus on weight loss!

Not everyone has issues with dairy, so you don't automatically have to exclude things like cream and cheese. Yes, you need to go easy in the sense that you shouldn't be eating them in quantities at every meal, but that doesn't mean to say that making a cheese sauce every now and then is off the menu.

A couple of things about fat - as I'm also guessing/assuming that this is partly behind your concerns:

  • and second, fat does not cause the insulin spike you would see if you were eating carbs - so it's not going to lay down fat in the same way

And finally ignore all those randomers on Mumsnet!. What do they really know? Other than finding ways to be nasty to other posters, they know nothing!

Was feeling decidedly skinny today but scales say I'm up few ounces. Confused

Need to get my water up i think.. i was pretty sure i was getting enough in but maybe not.

devoncreamtea · 10/06/2020 08:46

Morning Campers!
Quick check in as flippin home schooling is looming. Weighing into the cheese sauce chat, I sometimes do greek yog grated cheese and beaten egg.
I seriously can’t believe grown women are being spiteful to eachother online! Especially about bodies! Stay here with us where it’s supportive - and it works Flowers

B I have finally woken up not hungry!!!
L poss chorizo sausage and salad and asparagus
D chilli, sour cream, avo and cheese (looking forward to this!)

Just took some ibuprofen as feeling headachey and tired. I sometimes get migraines and if I don’t act swiftly I’m down for a day - hoping it Buggers Off.
I feel like I want to do more exercise (without kids!) but I am hampered children to look after/homeschool. I thought I’d get some in after tea but I havent made it yet. That’s my next self care thing - evening bike ride by myself to the beach. I’ll aim for a couple of times a week.
What’s this body weight stuff Athelstane - squats and stuff? I could fit that in while cooking/hiding from kids!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 10/06/2020 08:54

Devon, I'm not the best sharer on exercise, the whole idea disgusts me and I feel a prat.

However, until I can get back out to my beloved mountains, I need to do something. So I picked up the first sub-10 minute routine I saw on the internet.

20 squats
10 push ups
10 walking lunges (10 each leg)
10 tricep dips
15 second plank
30 jumping jacks

Repeat up to three times if you're feeling all jolly hockey sticks about it.

I've adapted it slightly as I can do way more of everything except the push ups, of which I struggle to do 1. So I'm doing them from the knee and can manage about 12 that way.

I don't necessarily do them all at the same time, and some I do whenever it occurs to me, instead of during a set time. I can cope with 30 second bursts of (pah!) exercise.

devoncreamtea · 10/06/2020 09:07

Thank you for sharing Athelstane 😊 that looks doable... my kids sometimes decide to “train” me and give me things to do while shouting at me like a bunch of Olympic coaches from the 80’s. Sometimes I surprise them - but not with push up!!! All looked great - good form - (as one of them yelled at me waving a towel) lowered gently...collapsed on floor.

Freetodowhatiwant · 10/06/2020 09:36

Who mentioned suppositories for constipation and what were they called? I get it really badly particularly when I have a period and it’s just snuck up on me 😱

NumbsMet · 10/06/2020 09:46

@AthelstaneTheUnready @BIWI, thank you ☺️ I'm very lucky to have a place I can come to, to talk with like minded and kind people. BIWI I will definitely keep working to readjust my thinking during this woe, because so far all the advice you have given has worked and I am stunned at the progress I'm making.

On that note, this week I've decided to experiment with a daily weigh in, and for the second day in a row I'm a pound lighter than the day before. I totally understand that I shouldn't expect to see more than 2lbs loss per week, but just to see any consistent changes at all during this is a massive boost. My 'house dress' is a lot looser, I have more energy.

Thank you!!!!!!!

BlusteryShowers · 10/06/2020 09:48

@devoncreamtea it's a good exercise going down like that in a press up! Try lowering to the ground as slowly as you can in a full press up (even if you do collapse at a certain point) then reset. You'll still feel it in your arms!

I'm supposed to be doing couch to 5k but our shower packed in about a month ago and I'm not into having baths in the morning. Been doing YouTube workouts instead once the kids are asleep. There are quite a lot that are "apartment friendly" so don't do any jumping about, so I don't need to dig out the sports bra. There's also a lot of short 3 minute workouts for when my 3yo is entertaining himself for a merciful window!

NumbsMet · 10/06/2020 09:48

@Freetodowhatiwant I know Dulcolax do some and I know they work well, you can get them from most pharmacies and supermarkets, but if another poster has recommended a different one that works better I hope they see your post!

Ninkanink · 10/06/2020 09:49

@NumbsMet I just realised I got your name wrong!

NumbsMet · 10/06/2020 09:51

@Ninkanink I didn't notice that! Don't worry about it Smile

Laska2Meryls · 10/06/2020 09:56

So after eating a lot more yesterday im pleased that the scales are the same..
And today feeling no fuzzyness and I'll carry on with the salt and magnesium..
We have turkey meatballs left, but I need to go shopping for veg and butter ( seem to be using alot of that on this WOE)

Laska2Meryls · 10/06/2020 10:00

Dulcoease are good , stool softener, so not so violent as full on Dulcolax.

Laska2Meryls · 10/06/2020 10:02

Ive been making cheese sauce with cream cheese and cheddar instead of flour for some time now ..it really works and is easy
! And also leek and parsley sauce the same way

Laska2Meryls · 10/06/2020 10:07

This sounds good, maybe even I ( total exercise avoider) could do this.. I think ill start with 5 each as a goal .. would have to to knee press ups and no way I could do a plank.. Walking is my main exercise, ( and w ehave big hills here which I regularly climb ) but I am thinking of getting the bike out of the shed today and having a gentle pootle down the riverbank and back
AthelstaneTheUnready · 10/06/2020 10:31

I'm sure it's probably better if you do it all at once, but I don't. I just cannot find the desire.

I figure if I've got the to end of the day and I've done some, most, or even all of the individual bits at various points, then that's a load of muscle strengthening stuff done that otherwise wouldn't be. Which has to help.

CalendulaAndRoses · 10/06/2020 10:40

just had to say I LOVE your approach to exercise @AthelstaneTheUnready and will be pinching some elements of your routine to insert between my usual 5 mins yoga stretches here and there and a gentle walk every now and then. I'll feel like super-woman!

CalendulaAndRoses · 10/06/2020 10:50

and @NumbsMet so good to have you here with us rather than out there with the bitter crazies !!

Notwatchingtvtoday · 10/06/2020 11:16

Morning all, childishly I am still chuckling at BIWI’s gummie bear link 😀.
Tough week for me, so am KOKOing to keep me level. I am amazed at how much better emotionally I feel on this WOE.

B Greek yogurt
L probably soup for a change
D salmon and FLGV

ealingwestmum · 10/06/2020 11:29

Could I ask a question on the water consumption please? I've been trying to up the volume of water throughout the day, drinking steadily and getting to around 2 to 3 ltrs max, which is around the recommended amount for my size. However, when I get to a certain amount, I just can't stop peeing very frequently, even though I should be used to it by now. And get up 2/3 times at night, but this may be compounded due to poor sleep patterns re menopause.

I can live with this as I'm in most of the time wfh, but getting a little nervous as restrictions ease more, especially due to limited public loos open right now.

Does this sound normal and I just get on with it, or do you reduce the amount drunk, relative to what you can take?

Thank you!

1WildTeaParty · 10/06/2020 11:33

Sorry you have been nipped by the spiteful elsewhere @Numbsnet . It is true about the support and kindness on here.

I have become used to seeing the occasional spiteful/angry/troll reaction on most threads (on all subjects) and hadn't spotted the way that all that is missing from bootcamp.

Perhaps all the butter and cream on here keeps blood-sugar steady and prevents meaness?
