Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - at last the finishing line!

BIWI · 22/07/2019 08:23

Isn't 10 weeks a long time!

The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness is here one last time

Although this is the last official weigh-in, this thread will stay up for general chat/support until the next Bootcamp - probably in October.

I hope everyone has a good 'final' result.

Every Bootcamp is different, but this one has, I have to say, been remarkably well behaved Grin. I've lost the Big Stick somewhere in the back of a cupboard!

While I know you're all here and reading because I know people don't read all the posts if you want to take the opportunity to meet @ShagMeRiggins (and me) for a lighthearted Bootcamp style & beauty event probably with gin thrown in for good measure send me a PM!

Sitting I'd highly recommend the cucumber and marmite combo, delicious and savoury!

venusandmars · 15/08/2019 21:11

Oooh I've got steam coming out my ears [fury]

I've engaged with a stupid thread where someone was doing a 'keto' diet and drank salt water, as well as eating loads of salty food.... They had an impossible headache and went to their doc who advised them to have some carbs.

The OP was then 'recovering' with full fat coke and macaroons. FFS!! Angry

There was helpful and knowledgeable advice about keto 'flu. There was helpful and knowledgeable advice about other eating / diet regimes. There was helpful and knowledgeable advice about dealing with the symptoms of too much salt.

None of the advice suggested a coke and a macaroon!

It really fucks me off. Someone who doesn't really understand 'keto' doing something stupid (drinking salt water) and in the process adding to the hysteria that calls this way of eating 'dangerous' or 'a fad' or 'unhealthy'.

And then rejecting a 'keto' way of eating in favour of a mass of sugar... grrr!!!!

Today I ate:
B - avocado, olive oil
butter coffee
L - salmon, broccoli, spinach (with butter)
D - chicken salad (loads of salad) and mayonnaise.

With the exception of the butter coffee, there is nothing in that list which could remotely be called dangerous, or unnatural. No refined sugars, no artificial flavours or additives. Plus lots of water, herbal tea etc.

I understand that this woe is not for everyone. I understand that either individual metabolism or lifestyle / family circumstances can make it challenging. I understand that other regimes work well for other people. But it does make me angry when uninformed / unsupported attempts at keto give it such bad press.

So thank you BIWI for this thread and thank you to everyone who posts and adds to our body of informed knowledge.

Ahh rant over..

Hello guys, remember me? Hope everyone's been doing well.
I was in the jan boot camp, during which I was able to re-educate myself with food and it paid off in some weight loss.
Was really eager to continue but then quite a few life events kept getting in the way (family wedding, an unfortunate chemical pregnancy and then a carb heavy holiday in Italy). Thankfully I haven't undone all my hard work but it's been hard getting myself back in the right head space.
I think I'm ready to start again but just missed the summer bootcamp.

When is the next one starting?

SittingontheSidelines · 15/08/2019 22:23

Well said @venusandmars

venusandmars · 15/08/2019 22:34

@Dia12 I think there's probably a new BC in October (leading up to the pre-Xmas period)

Notlostjustexploring · 15/08/2019 23:22

venusandmars I saw that thread, but couldn't get past the first couple of pages with lots of people saying, "just eat a healthy diet, how difficult is it? Don't follow fad diets etc."

My low carb day couldn't be called unhealthy by any stretch of the imagination. Strawberries and yogurt, tuna salad with lettuce, cucumber and pointed peppers and pine nuts and cheese, and chilli with roasted broccoli topped with grated cheese.

I've got to admit, I do start to doubt myself when I see slender people eating sandwiches etc, but I know that if I try to eat "properly", cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch etc, I end up bloody starving.

Are slender people on low fat diets just constantly starving? I know I would be (and have been). Or do some people respond well to low fat diets? Sorry, I think I've started rambling a bit...

Btw, my roasted broccoli topped with cheese was truly the dogs bollocks.

Can one eat too much broccoli on this WOE? I've asked this regarding other foods before and was told to calm the swede addiction but there is no such this as too many eggs. I'm hoping broccoli falls into the latter category...?

Sorry, another random thought I've been meaning to ask/observe. Is the bootcamp section of Mumsnet basically the best resource for low carb available on the internet? Because if a fact, or story or recipe exists, it is referenced there.

BIWI I think you've well earned your gin, setting all this up!!!

1Wildheartsease · 15/08/2019 23:52

Venusandmars I agree about the daft thread on 'keto' diet and having to drink salt water. We seem to be left with advice to live on either porkscratchings and salt water or cola and macaroons!)

( Education is required so that EVERYONE is able to ignore Dr Facebook!)

Your gin is well-deserved BIWI. Just look at what you have saved us from.

1Wildheartsease · 15/08/2019 23:55

Good to see you back and successful and happy m0therofdragons!

Glad that good eating is now a habit and part of an enjoyable holiday. (Was it all the salt water you drank?)

My day included a 6 hour walk in the foresty hills with an old friend. We meet to talk and catch up and we walk the dogs. It is often a lunch till dark chat :)

Not enough time for eating:
Coffee with coconut and coffee with cream
water

mint tea
water

omlette with asparagus - courgette - spinach - shallots- green pepper - goats cheese and cheddar
Tea and water

1Wildheartsease · 15/08/2019 23:59

By the way, the recipe for chicken Alfredo is amazing. I made double portions and served the three of us dinner. The rest was stored... but has vanished from the fridge today.

The gym-goers here have devoured it all and then attempted to soften the blow by offering much praise and thanks.

I was left with omelette.

Notwatchingtvtoday · 16/08/2019 08:42

Morning
venusandmars I saw that thread and had an eye roll moment 😀 .

When my husband looked questionably at butter in my coffee, I pointed out that I was not having butter in bread, cakes, biscuits etc and that I could actually see the fat I was adding, he got it.

NSV for me have been bumping into people who have not seen me recently and all commenting on how well I look. I do feel a lot better after loosing 10lbs, I think I’m also taking a bit more time over my appearance which also adds to it.

I’ve now recovered from thinking the almond butter I had been eating could be 26g not 2.6g per 100g, both a phone call to Whole Earth Foods and more importantly the scales have confirmed this. It would have been funny to have been a fly on the wall watching my face though.

I’ve been much better in my routine this week and have drunk more water, scales have stayed the same, but I have been eating more than I normally would , it’s giving me some idea of how maintenance could work for me.
Today will be
B Greek yogurt, butter coffee
L eggs
D chicken with loads of green veg and butter
Snacks some nuts/ almond butter

StuntNun · 16/08/2019 09:34

NotWatching I've had colleagues staring at me aghast as I opened butter pats and put them on my cooked breakfast. They couldn't grasp that I was eating exactly the same amount of butter as them, just skipping the bread, so I was actually eating less food overall.

NotLost I'm sure some people can stay slim on a standard diet but I would question how healthy they actually are. When you look at the number of health issues that clear up when people go low carb, it seems that it's quite possible to have a chronic condition that you just assume is part of life. I had IBS and atrocious menstrual issues for years and they were both miraculously cured by going low carb. I would eat this way for health reasons alone even if I wasn't doing it to maintain my weight.

BIWI · 16/08/2019 10:28

I posted briefly on that thread @venusandmars - but then have had to deliberately disengage as there was so much nonsense being posted! It's also a classic case of people not bothering to read the thread, which also raises my blood pressure too high Grin

@Notlostjustexploring

Sorry, another random thought I've been meaning to ask/observe. Is the bootcamp section of Mumsnet basically the best resource for low carb available on the internet? Because if a fact, or story or recipe exists, it is referenced there.

I'm not sure we could really claim that! I think that just reflects that we all talk a lot, regularly, about low carbing, which means that a search engine is more likely to find us!!

OP posts:
1Wildheartsease · 16/08/2019 11:10

This source is clearly much safer than the Facebook group that the unfortunate (saltwater drinking) soul was trusting.

It is interesting to hear the health benefits people have found.

(I have also explained to the uninformed here that I am having buttered toast with my breakfast- just omitting the toast. )

BIWI · 16/08/2019 11:22

It's a difficult thing though - because I'm not entirely sure that the OP of that thread was advised to drink salt water as she did - I wonder if she misinterpreted the advice? She is in week 2 of her diet, so surely wouldn't be suffering from carb flu by now - seems like she thinks she still has to drink that salt water concoction!

It's something I always worry about here too - making sure people understand what they should be doing, and don't get it wrong!

Interestingly, I'm on a Fast 800 FB page, and the number of people there who can't seem to get to grips with what's written in the book is astonishing. Michael Mosley is very clear that the diet is low calorie, low(er) carb and TRE (time restricted eating). But so many people focus just on the calories, despite having said they've read the book!

Yesterday was a good case in point - someone asking if she could eat a croissant, as long as she factored the calories into her day Hmm. Despite others pointing out that this wouldn't be OK, lots of other posters, with a lot of 'hunning' too Grin all saying it would be fine.

I used to be on a low carb FB group too (@StuntNun also there!) but had to leave because it was driving me mad how many people were saying that carbs were OK and not to worry about it etc. I got told off by the FB page admin for being too harsh/judgemental! (I think I forgot that I couldn't use the Big Stick there Blush)

OP posts:
BIWI · 16/08/2019 11:23

Sorry. Way too many exclamation marks in that post. I'll be lolling and hunning soon if I'm not careful ... Grin

I have noticed that low carb threads (outside)are usually peppered with posters suggesting slimming world or weight watchers or other pay-for options.

Perhaps the lack of subscription, the from-scratch-cooking, and refusal to buy 'bars' or 'shakes ' on LCHF is just too irritating😀. (We won't lose £s this way )

venusandmars · 16/08/2019 11:57

Aaww, for BIWI 😘

Welcome back @m0therofdragons and @Dia12.

@venusandmars I also read that thread with growing incredulity. Drinking salt water everyday? With no mention of drinking lots of water at all. Exasperating!

Been a bit lax at posting food and going on holiday tomorrow so going to drop out for a bit, but I'm happy with how the summer is going with a combination of eating LC most of the time.

Today's lunch worth a mention: leftover bolognaise served with shredded leeks and cabbage fried with smoky bacon and butter.

1Wildheartsease · 16/08/2019 16:05

B: cold spinach/courgette/shallot/goats cheese omelette
coffee with butter and with cream
1 litre water

L: BLT with homemade LC almond bread
1 litre water

Rosehip tea
Water

PLAN
D: Lamb mince and veg chilli with broccoli
water
Kale roasted with olive oil and garlic
WINE

ShagMeRiggins · 16/08/2019 17:24

WATER! WATER! WATER!

Notwatchingtvtoday · 16/08/2019 18:13

Looped you had a good holiday Shagmeriggins have missed your humour, welcome back

1Wildheartsease · 16/08/2019 22:32

That is a suitably piratical cry ShagMerRggiins!
Good to see you back.
