So here we are!

Lots of us signed up this time, so inevitably the thread will move very quickly. Please, though, take the time to read the whole thread!. Although this is a place where you can post your daily menus, or your thoughts and questions, please don't just do this, but read what other people have posted too.

A bit thank you to the very lovely @AthelstaneTheUnready who has set up the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. Star

The Spreadsheet

If your name isn't on there, don't panic! Just add yourself to the bottom of the list. Don't worry about trying to alphabetise it - that will be sorted out for you. (And if you're on the spreadsheet but don't want to be, don't worry - if you don't post on it your name will be taken off)

Here's a brief recap of the rules:

  1. Eat three proper meals a day
  2. Avoid processed foods
  3. Eat plenty of fat
  4. Make sure you are eating plenty of vegetables and salad
  5. Be careful about dairy (apart from butter which is unlimited)
  6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water a day
  7. No alcohol
  8. No fruit
  9. No nuts/seeds
10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

The full rules are here . They're supposed to be stickied at the top of the Low Carb Bootcamp topic (along with the recipe threads), but for some reason they're stickied at the top of page 2!

Remember that after the first two weeks we can relax some of this, and move on to Bootcamp Light, which means that you can add some fruit (berries mainly), alcohol (in moderation) and nuts and seeds (again, in moderation), but the point of the strict initial phase is to help push your body into burning fat for fuel rather than carbohydrate.

And remember - if you cheat, you will only be delaying this process from happening!

Good luck to everyone. Any questions or problems, just shout! Smile

Hey - I've been thinking all day its Monday (I dont work Mondays so it messes me up!) So I'm late in.

I have done Bootcamp before for about 6 weeks, then went on holiday and didnt get back into it.

I dont seem to be able to access the SoF however...

I am 247 lbs as of this morning. If someone could add me I would very much appreciate it. :)

B- Sausage and Bacon
L- Chicken and lots of salad - mayo
D - Fish and prawn pie (with cauli broccoli and cheese sauce)

just drank 1 Ltr of water so far. I will go and refill

Thanks BIWI and all that make this happen! :D

ChippingInLowCarbing · 14/05/2019 14:14

BIWI. Thanks 😊🌷 I need to get from the resentful, moody, carb withdrawing cow to the incredibly virtuous PITA stage quickly. For everyone’s sake 🤣

Feel free to throw in ‘Do it or do meds - YOUR choice’ as often as you like 🤣

Youcant 🌷 OUCH. Bloody typical isn’t it 😕. Hopefully you’ll be better soon and can’t get back out there soon.

As for weighing more at your Mum’s - of course you did, you’d eaten and drunk some water in between surely?! If not, her stupid scales are wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.

MrsBB good luck with that. (TMI I have the opposite problem when I have my period).

ChippingInLowCarbing · 14/05/2019 14:20

Mmmmm... butter. Does anyone else cut little slices to eat while they're cooking with it?

🤮 no. I’m happy to put copious quantities on —toast and potatoes— hot things (veg etc), but cold, nope. It makes me feel sick just the thought of it.

Nope. But I do lick the spoon from the garlic purée

Equally grim! 😂

youwanapizzame oops 😂. Never mind, you’ve got a good day planned today😀

ShagMeRiggins · 14/05/2019 14:38

Hey ChippingIn, do it or do meds - YOUR choice.

youcantscareme that’s grim, I hope you heal soon.

Oh, also, ChippingIn, just wanted to add, do it or do meds - YOUR choice.

dotheshakeandvac · 14/05/2019 14:38

Back for my third bootcamp. Small gain since the end of the last one - holidays Blush but ready to go again.
Thanks so much to biwi for wielding the stick, to ilovecherries and tootstastic for inspiration, and to everyone else for the most supportive little corner of the internet. I've never been good at posting much, but find checking in somehow keeps me accountable.

@AthelstaneTheUnready I've been able to add my stats to the spreadsheet but not my name. It's on line 149 - hope that's ok.

Breakfast - 2 slices streaky bacon
Lunch - 2 egg cheese and mushroom omelette cooked in butter
Dinner - Chicken salad with olive oil garlic mayo

ShagMeRiggins · 14/05/2019 14:40

One more thing for now, ChippingIn, do it or do meds - YOUR choice.

What? You said “as often as you like.” Grin

Youwanapizzame · 14/05/2019 14:40

Thanks Chipping!

I seem to remember that fruit tea bags in water was ok... please tell me its ok its my new fave thing....

Youwanapizzame · 14/05/2019 14:41

Cold ala flavoured water... not hot like fruit tea Grin Grin Grin

1Wildheartsease · 14/05/2019 14:42

Great ideas for meals everyone. I am finding this thread a great support (and distraction from work).

Good to hear that you are working on the T2 diabetes @ChippingInLowCarbing - despite the difficulties and temptations. Fingers are crossed that you get to avoid the drugs. Eye-surgeon in family here has had some very down days after seeing T2 patients too late. Apparently we mostly don't take it seriously enough.

SittingontheSidelines · 14/05/2019 14:43

Lots of interesting food going on. I had some Greek yogurt for breakfast. Lunch was a salad: leaves, onion (tiny amount sliced very fine) avocado and chips cumber. Dressed with cider vinegar and olive oil. Plus a leftover beef burger with a thin slice of cheese melted on and some American mustard.

Just re read this. I did not have chips, it was closed cumber.... bloody autocorrect, cucumber.

Tonight will be lamb cutlets, buttered asparagus and samphire. Possibly shallots and mushrooms as well cooked in with the meat.

Ninkaninus · 14/05/2019 14:49

I have T2 as well, that’s how I first got into lowcarbing - wanting to avoid having to take meds. It’s a work in progress.

But also, I’m happier when I look after myself and when I am slimmer and look/feel better in my clothes (this is about how I feel, not necessarily about size/shape - I see plenty of people daily who are bigger than me but look great and well put together. However I don’t feel like me when I go past a certain size, always having been very slim for most of my life).

I’m getting older. I only have one life. I want to spend it feeling well physically and also happy in myself.

SittingontheSidelines · 14/05/2019 14:53

Also I'm drinking the water today as well as tea.

1stMrsF · 14/05/2019 15:12

Hello campers. I am going to start tomorrow as I've been at a conference for two days where I couldn't choose what I ate. Just caught up with the thread on the train home and lovely to hear all the ideas and chat and support. Well done everyone for getting off to a good start, you've inspired me and I feel positive about joining in. Smile

MightyWings · 14/05/2019 15:23

Hi all, hope your day has been carb free yet filling.. :)

I am a few hours ahead of you all so am done for the day.
B: 2 slices almond keto bread (1g carb per slice) & 2 boiled eggs.
L: No time!
D: 1 x fried aubergine, 2 x quorn sausages, some mozarella and some pesto.

Now that would have been a good day, if I hadn't found an open packet of crisps while i was frying the aubergines. Unfortunately I ate them! However still think I wasn't too high on the carb count for the day, so apart from that all good. Totally full now, and having one gin and soda.

ChippingInLowCarbing · 14/05/2019 15:24

ShagMeRiggins. 🤣. You know me so well already 🤣

youwanapizzame. I don’t know about the fruit infusion bags. The ones I’ve seen seem to be free of everything, so I guess they’d be ok on Bootcamp Light once you can have berries, but probably best avoided these two weeks, simply to shake the ‘sweet thing’ craving, but on the other hand it seems a fairly harmless way to get you drinking enough water if you hate water 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hate flavoured water so I haven’t looked into it.

1wild I have been dx about 6 years now, but they suspect I’ve been T2 for a lot longer after some health issues screwing with my body. When I was first diagnosed I panicked. A lot. Terrified of amputation and retinopathy mostly. I started a thread on MN and got LOTS of support. I was sent over to BIWI & Bootcamp and she very much saved me. I can never thank her enough 😘🌷 She had SO much patience & she gently won me over to give it a go (no mean feat as I was reluctant, stompy and panicking. I had a lot going on in my life and this dx really threw me). She recommended Dr Briffa & other books and just made me see sense really.

Within 3 months my blood sugars and blood pressure were both back to normal (and they had been VERY high. The diabetes nurse had been a REAL bitch to me and told me I was ridiculous and would never do it without medication. She basically wouldn’t let me leave until I agreed to metformin. So I agreed. I didn’t take it though. When I went back she was smug, until I told her I hadn’t taken it. She just said ‘Oh. You will’. Bitch.

Knowing I’d had it for a while I was terrified going for my first retinopathy exam, but fortunately it was clear. I’m nervous every year, but so far 🤞🏼 it has been fine. It hasn’t been a good year though, so I’m bricking it for my test next month.

Nink. I really believe this is the best WOE to do everything you can to avoid the meds. That plus exercise. Even just walking every day. Do you self test?

ChippingInLowCarbing · 14/05/2019 15:27

having one gin and soda

Are you a couple of weeks in & on Bootcamp Light? I must have misunderstood as I thought you were just starting today.

MightyWings · 14/05/2019 15:31

I have just started today - whoops is this not allowed for two weeks?! I had better put the gin to the back of the cupboard. Blush

Hefzi · 14/05/2019 15:39

ChippingIn just stopping in to give my fellow veggie a wave! I am the same with dairy, but do eat eggs (fucktons on this WOE) - but tofu, tempeh and any soy stuff is the food of the devil (or, at least, the Itchy Red Hive Monster Grin)

But - we can do it, sistah: we've got all the other BC ers to lean on. Plus - better than meds, right?!

Ninkaninus · 14/05/2019 15:41

Regarding gin and soda...best read the rules quickly or BIWI will get her stick out!! (I have probably used up all her patience for today with my ‘no breakfast’ confession, plus the no alcohol rule is a strict one!)

When I’m being careful I find that no cal Indian tonic with a dash or two of angostura bitters and a slice of lemon, on ice, is a perfectly good drink to relax with and I really don’t miss the gin at all.

Chipping no I don’t...I trust that when I eat right it works. I can tell because I tend to feel markedly different quite quickly, plus I know how the science of it works. However I might start a diary/journal once this bootcamp is over, to keep me on the straight and narrow for good, so I may incorporate weekly or monthly testing as part of that.

MightyWings · 14/05/2019 15:43

Roger that Nink, thanks, and also veggie Hefz!

Rshard · 14/05/2019 15:54

The benefits of this woe are awesome aren’t they?! So fab to read about people racking their diabetes by low carbing.

I find I sleep better and my skin is much clearer too. What else?

Ninkaninus · 14/05/2019 15:58

My periods become completely painless. That’s a biggie. My moods improve markedly. My brain doesn’t feel like sludge. My face is clear and not puffy.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2019 16:00

Ouch on the fall!

The headache and insomnia have started for me. So I'd better lose eleventy billion pounds this week and positively glow with health.

1Wildheartsease · 14/05/2019 16:01

ChippingLow - that is amazing. You are right at the front of changing attitudes.

ChippingInLowCarbing · 14/05/2019 16:05

MightyWings - I have just started today - whoops is this not allowed for two weeks?! I had better put the gin to the back of the cupboard

Good move 👍🏻

I don’t drink much, but I am HORRIBLE for wanting what I ‘can’t’ have, as soon as I start low carbing I want stuff I have touched in months 🙄

*👋🏻

I do eat eggs (fucktons on this WOE)

I wish I could, it would really help, but I just can’t.

but tofu, tempeh and any soy stuff is the food of the devil (or, at least, the Itchy Red Hive Monster grin)

Have you tried the Cauldron sausages?

I honestly struggle to find things I can’t eat, without eating the same things day in, day out and I struggle to feel satisfied. Support wise BC’s are the best, but their eating logs make me weep with the variety of food they can eat! 😖🤣

better than meds, right?!

Yep. Better than meds for sure!

Nink. I stop self testing altogether when I’m being a Carby Twat. When I was first diagnosed I tested a lot, different people are ‘spiked’ by different things and I wanted to know which foods particularly spiked me so I could avoid them as even occasional very highs can affect you a lot, but they don’t show on an HbA1c test. But if you feel good & are happy with your overall feeling of wellness, that’s a nice place to be. Self testing can be a bit obsessive.
