January 2019 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1

BIWI · 14/01/2019 00:59

Well happy new year!

Here's a sparkling, brand new, Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for us all to get this new Bootcamp off to a good start.

Remember, you don't have to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to - and if you don't want to declare your actual weight, you can index it - which means that your starting 'weight' is 100. Then for every pound you lose, you take off one. So if you lose 4lbs in week 1, then your 'weight' starting for week 2 will be 96.

There are over 170 people signed up, so the thread will move very quickly - but please, please, please read all the posts. Don't just jump on and post your own stuff without reading what other people have posted. That's especially the case if you're posting with a question - read the thread to make sure it hasn't already been asked.

Have a good look at the spreadsheet and all the tabs at the bottom, as there's a huge amount of information there - not just the rules, but also the list of vegetable carb counts, and some really interesting reading/videos too.

I hope everything there is clear, but if not - just shout.

Looking forward to getting going!

Anyone watching "How to Lose Weight Well"?!

Aren't you glad you're eating this way rather than having to stomach charcoal shakes?!

Hi, thanks BIWI for setting this up. Can you add me to the spreadsheet, please, as it is still coming up as protected? 138 lbs. Not trying to lose much weight, but I also get blotchy/ spotty when I eat carbs. I've been mostly LC since boxing day and am not eating breakfast, apart from coffee with double cream, so not going to change that.
Lunch - salad with roast beef
Snack - a bit of ham and cheese, another coffee
Dinner - roast veg and pork chop
Going to try to do the 2 weeks with no nuts or blueberries because they are some of my go to snacks but I should really try to learn not to snack! It is never because I'm hungry, just a habit. I'll try to get through the evenings on just sparkling water.

MrsKoala · 14/01/2019 20:32

I actually like drinking charcoal Blush . I used to work in a high end beauty salon and we sold charcoal drinks to absorb the toxins in your body. I really liked them (but then again I do get a touch of pica).

CowGurl · 14/01/2019 20:33

Weight added. Looking forward to seeing that number reduce!!

Had a bit of a fail at the start gate today as managed to leave my deliciously lc packed lunch at home! Blush Had a small sushi, as thought that would be better than a sandwich, but not sure if that was the best choice. Anyway, rest of the day was v lc so onwards and upwards (well, hopefully downwards!).

Thanks for the graph @littleorangetree. V inspiring.

BIWI, this must take a lot of organizing and effort to set up and keep running, thanks so much for doing this!

BIWI · 14/01/2019 20:36

@LostaraYil you should find, after a week or so, that you simply aren't hungry between meals. It's one of the great joys of low carbing, that it suppresses your appetite

Not done so bad today, I had a terrible night so woke up mega late and as a result have only managed lunch and dinner today but both have been lc.
I am a little weary of eating too much protein - for example today:
Carbs - 9%
Protein - 28%
Fats - 63%

Is that ok? I’m going to reduce the carbs to 5% over the next few days.

strantia · 14/01/2019 20:41

Thanks for adding me prettybird. Thanks to BIWI and Athelstan for all the admin. Starting at 166 and would like to get down to 140 by May, Hoping the extra motivation on here will help.

Laska2Meryls · 14/01/2019 20:47

What did we say about Kefir on last boot camp? (I know it was discussed back in the summer ). looking on line it seems that it is considered to be ok for LC ,

I make my own with full fat local Jersey milk.. would like to continue with a small glass a day if possible..

MrsKoala · 14/01/2019 20:48

I think I need to eat my dinner earlier. I've found it really hard today as usually I graze between 5-8pm because i'm starving waiting for dh to come home then we eat a dinner at about 9 after some dc are sleeping and i'm not really hungry anymore.

I'll have to make dinner earlier (probably going to be in the slow cooker most days) and then he can just eat alone when he gets in. I think this is the main reason I've put on a stone recently.

Collectorofcookbooks · 14/01/2019 21:01

Through the first day and gosh I’m tired! Anyone else shattered? Must be all that up and down to the loo 😃 also feel very bloated around my tummy. But am also feeling very positive and looking forward to this. Thanks @BIWI and @Althestan!

B - poached salmon and avocado
L - broccoli soup with cream and spinach
D - roast gammon with sprouts and cauliflower cheese

PS no, not watching it - is it worth it?!

Methemummy · 14/01/2019 21:18

@AthelstaneTheUnready thanks for adding me to the spreadsheet just updated it.

BIWI · 14/01/2019 21:22

@Collectorofcookbooks - frustrating, irritating, but compelling!

BIWI · 14/01/2019 21:28

@Laska2Meryls I don't think so - but it depends how many carbs in your home-made version, and we can't know how many there are! But Sainsbury's gives 4.4g carbs per 100ml for their Bio-tiful Kefir.

And that's a lot, given that you're supposed to be getting the majority of your carbs from veg and salad

KiteMarked · 14/01/2019 22:01

Got thru dinner ok. It was a weird hodgepodge of buttery chicken and broccoli for me (the DC pinching some, natch) and burgers and chips for the hoi polloi. Wink I enjoyed my meal, very filling. The DC prefer familiar staples, though I'm working on changing their habits. Baby steps. (doesn't help when DH isn't interested in new meals, either)

Iamnotacerealkiller · 14/01/2019 22:05

I have it queued BIWI will watch tomorrow when baby is napping. i watch lots of these programmes and they all seem really dumbed down (especially the BBC ones) and years behind on what seems fairly established diet theory. Maybe its just because im so steeped in lc theory and have been for years.

Tom Kerridge's doc was particularly galling, he loses half his body weight using low carb then does a diet show and what diet does he use for the participants?? a conventional low cal one WTAF?? I imagine the producers are afraid to recommend anything that breaks conventional wisdom/government recommendations incase they get sued or something.

ScienceNut · 14/01/2019 22:32

Hiya,

Signing on.
I’m actually on day 8, so have got through the initial issues and by the taste in my mouth am definitely in ketosis.

B: creamy coffee
L: cheese salad with mayo
Exra creamy coffe
D: 2 egg omelette with bacon mushroom and cheese and some more mayo.

More veg needed

Mimosa1 · 14/01/2019 22:34

Found you! Thanks @BIWI and @AthelstaneTheUnready for organising this! I hit the scales today at 81kg - 7 kg heavier than when I confined BC 2 BCs ago. I know this woe works though - I'm especially looking forward to the stabilised blood sugar's effect in appetite.

B - full fat yoghurt with vanilla powder (the spice not extract, so no sugar - highly recommend it)
S - almonds ( I know they are against BC in the first two weeks so will not forget again)
L - buffet at work, picked at meat and salad. I think the marinade probably had some carbs but did the best I could
D - Brussels sprouts, pancetta, leek and haloumi roast - yum

Waves at @ilovecherries and @Rshard from the last BC.

BIWI · 14/01/2019 22:38

@ScienceNut - yes indeed you need more veg! And where's your breakfast?

OP posts:
BIWI · 14/01/2019 22:48

A good, handy breakfast option (and also a useful on-the-go snack)

Egg muffins

3 eggs
6 slices Parma ham
1 shallot, diced
3 mushrooms, diced
2 x cloves of garlic (optional)
1 birds eye chilli, diced (optional)
Oregano
Olive oil
Cheddar cheese

  • Line 6-hole muffin tin with Parma ham, each slice cut in half so that the cup can be lined with no holes (hopefully!)
  • Gently sauté the shallot, mushroom, garlic and chilli in olive oil till soft, season with black pepper and a little salt (the ham is salty so don’t add too much salt)
  • Divide the mushroom mixture into the lined muffin holes
  • Beat the eggs, and then pour over the mushroom mixture
- Bake in a hot oven for around 7-8 minutes - Remove from the oven, and then top with a slice of cheddar - Bake for another couple of minutes until the cheese is melted/browned - Leave to cool slightly, so they can be easily removed from the tin

I survived the return to Uni trip courtesy of a bag of pork scratching and a Pret crayfish and avocado salad was in two minds about the dressing in case it had sugar in it, but have looked it up 4.2g carbs per serving. Not too bad.

i doubt I’ve drunk enough water though.

Mandelinka · 14/01/2019 23:01

After spending the morning at the dentist, had a lovely day with my DH ( he is starting new job in few days so will be very busy)

B poached eggs, avocado, holandaise
L coffee, cheese and avo roll up, yesterday’s leftover salad ( green leafs, sardines, tomatoe, pepper, extra olive oil and mayo)
D pork stir fry, mushrooms, courgette

Water 2.5 l, ( about 6 cups of herbal/green tea, water)

I’ve been LC since late December so may miss bfast some mornings. Also stepped up my excercise as going on hols in 5 weeks. I’ve tried bikinis on recently and had a nasty wake up call Blush. Some serious toning needs to be done.

prettybird · 14/01/2019 23:04

I'm driving down to London with dh and ds on Friday (we're going to see the Saracens-Warriors game on Saturday ds will be slightly conflicted as he also supports the Sarries as his favourite English team Grin), driving back up on Sunday afternoon (ds flying direct back to Aberdeen from Luton). I can probably cope food wise with a bit of planning (although it will probably be a bit processed meat/cheese heavy and veg light Blush) but drinking the required amount of water will be difficult.

MrsTerryPratcett · 14/01/2019 23:40

Hello all

B - Boiled eggs, mashed with butter, sauteed spinach, tea
L - Sauteed spinach, chicken leg (mmmm skin) and cauliflower mash, green tea
D - Chicken leg (I know, but leftovers) avocado and mayonnaise

I've read the bit about stevia, and my electrolytes for running have no carbs but have stevia. They are super sweet-tasting... So not now but for how long?

WhatTheFronti · 15/01/2019 05:29

Stopping in to keep myself on track...

Have not drunk near enough water (only 1.2 Lts) - it is sorching hot (43c) and have been out and about with kids (school hols) - forgot my drink bottle and am now home currently necking water to stave of headache.

B - herbed cream cheese, avocado, Jamon parcels ( I don't eat eggs so find breakky a little difficult) & coffee (unsweetened almond milk)
L - tuna mayo in half large avo with salad greens
D - will be home made grilled chicken caeser salad with lovely creamy dressing

Hefzi · 15/01/2019 05:42

Morning, all.

What I envy you 43 degrees! I'm sitting at my desk with my feet in a sleeping bag, and wearing a wooly hat under my hoodie!

MrsT I think it's just on BC you need to abstain from sweeteners, but I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable will confirm or deny this! I seem to recall, in a previous BC, discussion around running electrolyte drinks/gels.

Just finished breakfast: steamed cauli and broccoli with a knob of coconut oil - craving veg atm (and sugar - I know this will go in a couple of weeks, though) for some reason
L big green salad with lots of oil and a hard boiled egg
D Probably freezer lucky dip (I have filled the freezer with BC food in advance this time so I've never got an excuse not to stick to the plan) at the moment, hoping for cauliflower cheese!

I've set my fitbit with reminders to move, to remind me to keep sipping (rather than glugging, as I did yesterday Blush) so hopefully water will be more consistent today.

Hope everyone has a smooth day Flowers
