January 2019 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1

BIWI · 14/01/2019 00:59

Well happy new year!

Here's a sparkling, brand new, Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for us all to get this new Bootcamp off to a good start.

Remember, you don't have to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to - and if you don't want to declare your actual weight, you can index it - which means that your starting 'weight' is 100. Then for every pound you lose, you take off one. So if you lose 4lbs in week 1, then your 'weight' starting for week 2 will be 96.

There are over 170 people signed up, so the thread will move very quickly - but please, please, please read all the posts. Don't just jump on and post your own stuff without reading what other people have posted. That's especially the case if you're posting with a question - read the thread to make sure it hasn't already been asked.

Have a good look at the spreadsheet and all the tabs at the bottom, as there's a huge amount of information there - not just the rules, but also the list of vegetable carb counts, and some really interesting reading/videos too.

I hope everything there is clear, but if not - just shout.

Looking forward to getting going!

Lost the plot a bit today Confused.

Unexpected cat vomit in the kitchen this morning took the time I normally have for breakfast, so just coffee with cream - fair enough. Lunch was packed last night and good - cold roast beef, raw spinach, mushrooms. But signal failure on the trains means I've only just got home, and an early start tomorrow means I need to be in bed in 20 mins! Which means dinner is two eggs, and a slab of cheese with an even thicker slab of butter on top (with extra salt and pepper, heavenly). Being all I have that doesn't need cooking or defrosting. Ach well, vegetarian meals for me all tomorrow to make up for it.

Loving the carb dreams Grin. I've never had one, but I do have extremely vivid and detailed dreams on bootcamp. Unfortunately they're always about digging a ditch, or pointing out puddles to people, or talking to a friend about the day we went to Bangor... in endless 3D hyperreal vision... #beatthatfordull

I stuck to water at the pub tonight felt very virtuous. Then the group I was with decided we should go to Nando’s, which I thought would be my downfall, but it turns out they do some great undressed salads, which you can choose to add avocado / halloumi / chicken to.

Haworthia · 16/01/2019 21:31

Nando’s do lovely chicken thighs too!

lizard202 · 16/01/2019 21:36

Hi all, similar to @nowlook I have a challenge coming up. I'm going away for a large group camping weekend and will have no control over the cooking. My understanding is that we have hotdogs, sausages, bacon sandwiches, chicken planned so while I can eat the meat and avoid the bread etc, I am worried about lack of fat to keep me feeling full. Also not much veg on hand. So does anyone have any suggestions of things to take to eat cold to keep me feeling full and getting my intake. Was thinking of those tuna pots suggested earlier, babybel and celery with a tub of pate but looking for any other suggestions. Thanks everyone, you're all stars 💪🏻

Livelongandprosper · 16/01/2019 21:39

Ilove wow, glad to hear it settled. Do you think low carbing has helped in the long run?
Summer Your graph looks very similar to mineSmile

MrsKoala · 16/01/2019 21:45

Just off to bed now so my day has been:
B - 5 spinach and cream cheese soufflé muffins
L - pork loin and green salad and mayo
1st dinner - 2 sausages and broccoli and stilton soup
2nd dinner - 2 chicken thighs roasted and stir fried veg

Darkbaptism · 16/01/2019 21:54

That’s really interesting Live, I noticed mine drop after
Christmas and will see if dropping sugar makes a difference!

My muscles are aching. I took the dog for a walk and now can barely move, I assume it’s carb flu and will pass in a day or 2.

KiteMarked · 16/01/2019 22:29

How long does it take for the body to get adapted to burning fat rather than carbs? (is that the right terminology? /newb)

Or, in other words, IS IT ONLY WEDNESDAY

Dia12 · 16/01/2019 22:46

Hi guys, this thread is moving at warp speed. I haven't been able to write but tried to keep up.

I made the Shepard's pie recipe from the spreadsheet and it was AMAZING! Totally surprised by how nice celeriac tasted in the end....was really dubious until the end.
I'm still onboard and sticking to the rules, just not done so well with the water today only managed 2 litres (should be nearer 3).

Good question @KiteMarked about fat adaptation - I was wondering how long it would take.

BIWI · 16/01/2019 23:18

@SummerSazz well, alcohol is sugar! Interesting that you've seen the same trend as @LiveLongAndProsper.

I'd imagine your blood pressure must also come down too.

@MrsKoala I think that carb count sounds absolutely perfect! Go for it, as long as you swerve the bread.

@KiteMarked YES IT'S ONLY WEDNESDAY! It should take a couple of weeks to be fat-adapted - but it's not an exact science and I have seen some people say it takes longer than that. Don't worry too much though. You'll see the benefits regardless of how long it takes.

@Lizard202 you're a braver man than me going camping in this weather! I assume you'll have a cool box? In which case you can take hard boiled eggs, cheese and even yoghurt (full fat, natural). Make sure, though, that the sausages are low carb ones - if you don't know what they're taking, then please, please, buy your own so you know that they're low carb. Some sausages are incredibly carby - Richmond thick pork sausages are 7.4g carbs each!

Not a great night for me - we went to the cinema and then to Bill's for dinner as it's right next door to the cinema. They've changed their menu since we were there last, and there was virtually nothing I could have Sad

And the choices I made all turned out to have some kind of sweet element (and it wasn't very nice either)

Still. Day 10 of being alcohol-free, so that's something positive.

Dia12 · 16/01/2019 23:30

ah sorry to hear that @BIWI - it's always pants taking the hit of eating something outside of your eating plan and then not even enjoying it.

I find it hard eating out with this woe, especially when there so many hidden carbs/sugar. Social gathering either eating out or when we are entertaining and I'm cooking for a larger group at home that I usually fail.
I know cooking at home should make it easier for me but I find I just get so tired that I lose the energy and motivation to make something appropriate for myself - this is definitely something that I need to work on!

BIWI · 16/01/2019 23:40

To be honest/fair, eating out is usually easy, particularly as we normally avoid chain restaurants. Bill's is quite a good one, but their new menu is definitely not great for low carbers! I did get them to me a naked burger, without the chips Halo, but it wasn't really that nice.

However, in the great scheme of tings it wasn't too bad - we're talking about sweet/sugary glazes and overly sweet ketchup. I didn't fall head first into chips and pudding!!!

Just frustrating when you try so hard.

It was difficult to forego the wine as well, but we did Grin so all in all it was OK - just could have been so much more enjoyable.

Hi all, I'm checking back in. I'm also in Aus, so it's stinking hot here, which makes it easier to eat salad + fat + protein for lunch & dinner Grin

I'm finding breakfast difficult as I'm not keen on eggs either, although I liked the sound of BIWIs egg + proscuitto muffins further up the thread. And the thought of 'proper' food before I leave for work makes me want to vom. I've just thought that I could pack up 2 lunches and eat one for a late breakfast and 1 for lunch - would that work BIWI?

WhatTheFronti · 17/01/2019 04:47

Hi all!
Wk1 day4 going well so far.... (well I'm a PMSing, the kids driving me nuts and it's too fecking hot to leave the house (cabin fever - level extreme!!!) but the eating is going well...😊)

B - u/s almond milk coffee, Swiss cheese, spinach, olive dip (blitzed olives mixed thru mayo) and prosciutto parcel/roll ups
L - Mexican chicken chopped salad with ff mayo
D - chicken thigh stir fry with broccoli/spinach/green beans

Have had 2 more coffee with almondmilk and will require all my will power to not open a bottle of wine this evening (which is VERY difficult as DH works for winery and house is full of the bloody stuff taunting me)

WhatTheFronti · 17/01/2019 04:56

*Celia I make up my little antipasti roll up things - I know they aren't great with the jamon/prosciutto (I use 1/3 of a pack each morning (100gms)), but it means I will eat something (usually around 2 hours after waking). I like savoury foods for breaky but can't face eating anything too soon after waking. I think the late breakfast is a good idea - definitely better than no breakfast!

WhatTheFronti · 17/01/2019 05:04

Sorry for the tag fail @CeciliaMcFlange 😳 I'm a mumsnet novice

Mimosa1 · 17/01/2019 05:52

Goodness this thread moves fast! Love it
I'm finally caught up.

I've discovered almond milk in coffee is not bad at all. I still can't get used to it in tea (I'm a big tea drinker) but I don't drink as much coffee so don't really have a view of how it "should" taste iyswim

Laughing at all the carb dreams

Food yesterday was only OK

  • B : 2 cups of milky tea and some ore sliced emmental
- L: emmental and roast chicken slices
  • d - more roast chicken with mayo and a very small portion of peas

I was travelling around but need to up the veg and water.

I also bought a pack of babybel and carried them around in my work bag all day. The pong in my bag is... pungent

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 17/01/2019 07:00

Hi, I'm following you all and have started on Monday too. I did not get around to adding myself to the list. I hope that's ok.
I have done this before and lost a lot of weight. I piled it back on by being addicted to sugar! Think it's something I can't really have a little of now but I'm ok with that 😂
My two new finds are
Lacto free milk which tastes like normal milk and is 2.7 grams of carbs. It tastes just like normal milk so great in tea and coffee!! Only have a couple of these though a day.
I've also done a bit of research and MCT oil is supposed to speed up the switch from glucose burning to fat burning. So I'm going to try that alongside my fasted runs in the morning (before breakfast)
Keep going everybody 😊

Iamnotacerealkiller · 17/01/2019 07:14

@BIWI

Shame about Bill's, i used to work for them and early on they were pretty great for food but since they exploded in size its been much more hit and miss. They used to have a mostly veggie menu (which is usually carb loaded) so not ideal.

The halloumi burger is still one of the best things ever though, i use that as an inspiration to make a hallumi salad swapping the carby ingredients out. so hallumi, roast veg, natural yoghurt, swap the bun for salad leave and swap the sweet chili sauce for a tomato/olive tapenade (found one in sainos) and it comes close to the flavours.

BalloonSlayer · 17/01/2019 07:23

Thanks for all the advice on eggs, everyone!

I had cauliflower rice from Iceland last night and although it smelled of cauliflower it didn't taste of it and I was very impressed.

Keep up the good work guys!

Iamnotacerealkiller · 17/01/2019 09:16

I have randomly dropped 2lb this morning after 3 days of sts. Weird, makes me wonder if my scales were working properly as the curve of the graph is much more consistent now and matches the days before Hmm.

That's 7lb off since i started last wednesday (i started 5 days early) don't know why but everything seems to be working better this time around. No cravings at all, appetite has disappeared. I have been very strict this time, cutting out the milk i usually have, reducing portions overall, lots of soup etc. dunno just clicks this time.

I have lots of events coming up which helps for short term goals. My dad is visiting for my birthday soon and i would like to avoid any mentions of my weight this time Angry. Idealy i would like to be at goal weight by easter!

Mandelinka · 17/01/2019 09:19

Good morning. Had a sneak weigh in this morning and pounds are peeling off ( and I’m in the middle of TOM ) excellent! I’m on a week 3/4, I think it helps that I haven’t been drinking at all and not missing it.

Yesterday
B: green tea
L: mixed salad, cucumber, mayo, chopped up burger
D: homemade veg soup, cream, dark chocolate

Mandelinka · 17/01/2019 09:21

My DH is finally trying to understand what LC means and asks how can we adapt our meals to suit my WOE. Bless him

bella1426 · 17/01/2019 09:22

Accountability post! Couple of fails yesterday...Met friends for coffee and panicked when the barista said they had no almond milk and ordered an oat milk cappuccino. Can only imagine it's pretty carby! And wasn't very nice either. Other one is last night I totally caved into a chocolate craving and got OUT OF BED to come downstairs and eat 4 squares of dairymilk left over from Christmas selection boxes. FFS.

Was it worth it? Wellllll kind of at the time cos it was SO delicious but not AT ALL if if means no movement on the scale. Am also a daily weigher and nothing yet this week but I had a naughty Sunday so hoping over the 2nd half of the week it will start to show as I'm (mostly) on track. Annoyed I still can't totally ignore the chocolate monster but just gotta KOKO I guess.....

Todays Plan
B - Rocket with Bacon and Feta
L - Chicken and mushroom in a cream and parmesan sauce with brocolli and cauliflower
D - Chilli Pesto Prawns with Mushrooms and Courgette
E - Gym session with personal trainer
