January 2019 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 1

Well happy new year!

Here's a sparkling, brand new, Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for us all to get this new Bootcamp off to a good start.

Remember, you don't have to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to - and if you don't want to declare your actual weight, you can index it - which means that your starting 'weight' is 100. Then for every pound you lose, you take off one. So if you lose 4lbs in week 1, then your 'weight' starting for week 2 will be 96.

There are over 170 people signed up, so the thread will move very quickly - but please, please, please read all the posts. Don't just jump on and post your own stuff without reading what other people have posted. That's especially the case if you're posting with a question - read the thread to make sure it hasn't already been asked.

Have a good look at the spreadsheet and all the tabs at the bottom, as there's a huge amount of information there - not just the rules, but also the list of vegetable carb counts, and some really interesting reading/videos too.

I hope everything there is clear, but if not - just shout.

Looking forward to getting going!

Wow! Who knew, after all these years! Grin. Are you actually still alive?!

That's amazing, and really interesting. Have you been taking your blood pressure as well? Would be interesting to see if that's gone down too.

I am really struggling. I thought I liked eggs but this morning I thought they were disgusting (not the taste, just them ) and I felt sick. I felt off when I had them on Monday too. But I am not sure what else to have for breakfast. I don't normally eat eggs very often (one of the DCs is allergic) so maybe I can't cope with eating loads. I was interested to see that someone upthread says they have a "limit" where eggs are concerned.

I have bought some yogurt and had some this afternoon with a sprinkle of cinnamon as recommended on here. I was moaning to DD about how crap it tasted and she pointed out I was scraping the pot as I complained. Grin

I have been fantasising about having sugar in my tea. I haven't had sugar in my tea for thirty years!

BIWI · 16/01/2019 18:28

Well you don't have to have eggs, they're in no way compulsory!

Also, breakfast doesn't require special food - just eat whatever you might eat for another meal.

Are you sure you're not pregnant?

livelong, mine was the same - apparently I had a benign, idiopathic tachycardia. Ie, no one knew why, but it didn’t seem to be doing me any harm. Except it felt terrible and I was prescribed beta blockers to take if I felt I needed them. The first two weeks on bootcamp it actually got MUCH worse - to the extent I ended up in A&E. Since then it’s gradually reduced and is now usually about 60 (previously nearly always over 100)

MrsKoala · 16/01/2019 18:54

Thanks for info re walnut oil Biwi and Pretty I must have been confusing the oil with actual nuts. So does that mean I can have peanut and sesame oil?

Also something I was wondering is DH usually provides/assembles dinner on Saturdays since I lost my shit about cooking all the time . This is usually something ready made from the supermarket which I know is off limits (it's not something I particularly like but it fills a hole and I am at the stage that I would usually happily eat anything as long as I don't have to cook it). But one of his 'go to' meals are the ready mussels in a white wine, cream and garlic sauce with a baguette. Obviously I wouldn't eat the baguette but are the moules off too? Does this mean I have to cook on Saturday night as well?

Cheeseandapple · 16/01/2019 18:55

Today's felt really good.
B three egg omelette with cream, cheese and red peppers. Thought I didn't like omelette but maybe I was doing it wrong.
L salad with mayonnaise dressing & forgot the boiled egg so had that after.
S still waiting to have supper as DD won't fall asleep but I've made a philly creamy sauce with loads of veg and might do sausages to go with.

Cheeseandapple · 16/01/2019 18:56

Also had my 3.2L water & avoided my usual suspects of sweet treats.

MrsKoala · 16/01/2019 18:59

I can't link for some reason but they are the Scottish mussels in white wine for Sainsburys. I have just seen the carb count is 8.7 for half a pack so I guess it's off limits? Are there any ready prepped things I can eat?

TescoValue · 16/01/2019 19:12

Definitely have carb flu, felt horrendous at work today, luckily I work in pharmacy so plenty of paracetamol to take Grin
B: 2 boiled eggs
L: baby leaf salad, spinach, cheddar cheese, olives, cucumber, green pepper, bacon and mayo
D: pork chops with kale and spinach cooked in garlic butter

Had a baby Bel, Greek yoghurt and a pepperami as snacks throughout the day. Not very adventurous and not as much veg as I normally eat, so will up that.

latebloomingleo · 16/01/2019 19:22

@Balloonslayer I really hate eggs when I try to eat them on their own (scrambled). Gives me a tummyache and feel sick.
I worked out that I didn’t feel like that if I had them with other stuff. On this BC I’ve been making egg muffins with ham, vegetables, cheese etc and it’s been absolutely fine.
Think egg intolerance is worse the runnier the egg too.

Haworthia · 16/01/2019 19:23

It was me with the egg limit @BallooSlayer Grin

Like you, I can be funny with them. I like them cooked all sorts of ways, but sometimes I go right off them and won’t eat one for weeks and weeks. Three medium eggs tipped me over the edge today and I felt nauseous until about 3pm. So I doubt I’ll be having eggs for breakfast tomorrow Grin

Haworthia · 16/01/2019 19:24

I meant @BalloonSlayer Smile

Finding all the posts really helpful and have saved lots of recipes. Busy day today, totally shattered after being up in the night with DS having a high temp after vaccines, and then up at 6 for a horrible long drive stuck in traffic for work..
Had about 10mins break all day, which at least too my mind off food.
B. Boiled egg and creamy coffee..(2Blush)
L. Salad, egg, feta, toms and olives, loads of mayo
D. More lasagne with greens cooked in butter ..also had some clotted cream.
Doing ok with water, struggling as I just don't get chance to go to the loo all day sometimes! (Teacher..)
Avoided chocolate and biscuits today, there's always loads at school but it felt quite easy.

Doilooklikeatourist · 16/01/2019 19:27

Headache wore off once I’d had something to eat , knew I wouldn’t have carb flu , I’ve had the flu jab 😀
B Celery sticks and crispy bacon
L avo salad with feta cheese , lettuce , cherry tomato and cucumber with olive oil and lots of sea salt
D roast chicken thigh , cauli cheese courgettes and slightyover cooked roast Brussels sprouts ( a taste sensation )
Need a couple of glasses of water and a herb tea

nowlook · 16/01/2019 19:36

Not a bad day, but not sure if I ate enough because I couldn't fancy a full three-egg omelette for breakfast, so ended up saving half for lunch. Also got a bit disheartened over the number of carbs in a tin of chopped tomatoes (I've been eating up ratatouille for three days and only just noticed). Perhaps feel I'm cheating a bit on the water- necking 2.5 ltrs in the morning and precious little after that, just to get it out the way. Still, I've had:

B: mushroom, spinach and feta omelette (well, half)
L: The other half of said omelette with the final bit of ratatouille and parmesan
D: Homemade chicken, broccoli, spinach, cabbage etc etc soup with parmesan. Plenty of butter in the soup!

No snacks today.

Will try to be better tomorrow and space out the water!

Littleorangetree · 16/01/2019 19:40

Hi everyone! Sounds like you've all done well today. My day's been fine and I'veamanaged to get back into drinking plenty of water. Have started a local step count challenge, so it'll hopefully up my exercise (though it's dark and snowing here at the moment, which isn't making me want to go out and walk!).

B: I don't eat breakfast, just have a coffee (been doing this WOE since the last bootcamp, so already fat-adapted hopefully!).
L: salad with coronation chicken. I made the mayonnaise myself last night and it's bloody lovely! (and lower carb than shop bought). Took a while to mix the oil in but very much worth the effort!
D: 2 chicken legs (skin on), crispy kale with chilli flakes and onion salt (my new discovery - I put onion salt on everything at the moment!) , mushrooms in a creamy sauce.

Have had water, coffee and rooibos tea to drink.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 16/01/2019 19:43

Like you, I can be funny with them. I like them cooked all sorts of ways, but sometimes I go right off them and won’t eat one for weeks and weeks.

Me too! In the previous Bootcamp I was definitely at the point where I just couldn’t stomach any more eggs.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 16/01/2019 19:47

I always have carby eating dreams a few days in usually. it usually seems to be pizza which is strange as i would never choose one in RL and im gluten intolerant anyway.

Like you BIWI i always wake up forgetting it was only a dream and spend the day beating myself up and needing to remind myself it wasnt real. its actually quite helpful sometimes as the guilt make me get back on track (or determined to continue).

The appetite suppression has kicked in for me. Had spicy mince 'no wrap' tacos for breakfast. then made soup to have for lunch but thought i would wait as i wasn't peckish at all. Fed and napped baby and before i realised it, it was 5 and i hadn't eaten or felt like eating. Had bellypork and fried greens for dinner though. Soups in the fridge for tomorrow.

I have decided this time around to try and more closely follow the eating plan i did the first time i ever did lowcarb (and lost 30lb in 3 months) i used a delivered service where the portion sizes were quite low and lunch was always soup. Breakfast was always a nutty granola so i will wait for week three for that (i made up a homemade version that was nothing but nuts and seeds) but having soup in the fridge at all time is working well and is combating my cooking fatigue as it lasts more then a meal or two.

This week its a rather delicious chicken stock with leeks, celery, mushrooms and goats cheese. will wack some spinach in it tomorrow before reheating. minimal meat and lots of veggies!!

1stMrsF · 16/01/2019 20:07

You were right @BIWI the exercise class was fine tonight- clearly my body has got used to there being no instant carb fuel available! Hopefully that means more fat burned!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 16/01/2019 20:08

My day:

B - Two boiled eggs mashed with mayo
L - Salad with chicken
D - Mushroom, pepper and chorizo kebabs with roasted greens

Pot of natural yogurt as a snack
2.5 litres of water

Now I want biscuits 😬

CassieStuart · 16/01/2019 20:09

Another good day for me. Yummy dinner of rump steak - fried in lots of butter with a good load of sliced mushrooms also thrown in and about six nuggets of frozen spinach which I cooked and then mixed the buttery sauce in from the steak and mushrooms. Still got 450ml of water to drink though, which I am surprised at as I did drink a lot today. Wondering if I forgot to mark down a bottle.

Went and did some interval training over lunch and was happy that I didn't feel like I had no energy, as was expecting the lack of carbs to make it feel awful. Maybe that's to come...?

AandL · 16/01/2019 20:14

@littleorangetree I make my mayo with immersion blender and it takes no time at all. Theres a recipe on TheClothesMakethegirl, in fact Mel has lots of great recipes that would suit this woe

Littleorangetree · 16/01/2019 20:33

@AandL that's a good idea - I'll definitely have a look at that website. I mixed the oil in using a hand whisk and it took ages, but was weirdly satisfying Grin.

Rshard · 16/01/2019 20:37

Everyone is doing so well. I’ve ignored doughnuts in the office today and this evening dd baked a cake and I’ve not had any. She’s not offended!

B - scrambled eggs avo salmon
L - salad leaves cucumber ham cheese mayo
D - salad leaves cucumber halloumi mayo

Possibly too much cheese!? I’ll lay off tomorrow I think

SummerSazz · 16/01/2019 20:38

I’ve been rubbish posting as keep getting logged out on my phone and can’t access the spreadsheet as no space for another app 🙄.

Re heartbeat mine is usually a reaction to alcohol rather than sugar. I started back low carbing mid last week with no alcohol...
