Welcome to week 3!

As BIWI's away, she asked if I would start the week 3 thread. I've stolen her words from a previous week 3, as it's such a good explanation of bootcamp v. bootcamp light. Grin

Didn't post my weigh-in yesterday - down 2lb to 12 stone Smile That's half a stone since Boot Camp started this time around Grin

And in fact this morning, I saw 11stone 13 1/4lb on the scales! ShockSmile

So very nearly back to the 3 stone off since I started last year! (After a gap of over a year and a major depression too).

I'm really pleased with my progress so far - especially as I had a day "off" in the middle of the 1st week for my 20th wedding anniversary (in the event, I stayed Boot Camp Lite on the day food wise - but we did have lots of very good wine Blush). Over the weekend and yesterday, I finally got over my boredom habit of snacking on salami and/or Emmenthal. Yesterday, because I was working (and relaxing) in the garden and it was so hot, I drank loads of water. Dh and I enjoyed a lunch of "leftovers" - cold (home made) burger, the avocado, Cheshire cheese, cucumber, tomato and almond salad that I'd made last week and a nice simple green salad.

I did however celebrate the end of the long Bank Holiday weekend with a Pimms (with diet lemonade) and then a glass of good white wine (the rest of the bottle that dh had opened on Saturday and I had virtuously abstaining from partaking Halo).

farine when I started BC in Jan I was 11 stone 12' so similar to you, I'm now 10 stone 5, not been that weight for years! I'm quite happy with my weight now, can fit into so many more of my clothes and just look better in the clothes that fitted. I was verging on fat but now I just feel normal. If you follow this diet you can be that too! KOKO 😀

Yarboosucks · 29/05/2018 23:18

I have just 2 days at home with an open box of mini red velvet cupcakes.... Wasn't even tempted! Major win for me!

CodLiverOil556 · 30/05/2018 01:28

Just caught up with the thread. Some excellent losses...I've lost 3.6lbs so am 8.6lbs down overall. My appetite has disappeared and am struggling to eat but feel full of energy.

Am going to stick to boot camp for the weekdays and boot camp lite on weekends. I suffer with keto itch/rash in the same place every time which is very odd. I tested with a wee stick and it went bright pink so definitely in ketosis (I suffered carb flu for about a week and am very glad to be on the other side!)

KOKO everyone!

Rayna37 · 30/05/2018 06:31

Kermit total light bulb moment: I did not know Keto itch was a thing!! I've been really itchy since the start of this BC on and off but just thought it was a summer thing; I have a few bites which I always react badly to despite antihistamines. Off to research this more.

LeapinLizards · 30/05/2018 07:06

Really interested to hear about the need to up fat intake as we approach goal. @stuntnun should the macros change? I use MFP & set them to 70% fat 25% protein 5% carbs. Should I adjust them given I'm a few pounds off my target?

Laska5772 · 30/05/2018 07:37

Ha! athelstane you ready for me ? just got on the scales....

and.....

a lb down! SmileSmileSmile

so ill be having that teaspoon of olive oil in the mornings from now on

Laska5772 · 30/05/2018 07:40

I've also just tried on almost everything in my 'jeans pile' thats at the bottom of my wardrobe ( bet you all have one).. about 2/3rd fit again ! (some are a bit big..)Yay!

farine · 30/05/2018 07:46

I've read that article, thanks biwi.

I do wonder if because of all the marathon training I have been doing my body is slower to adapt to this WOE as it's been disciplined to be in a metabolic slow and steady state so it's not releasing the fat. Anyway, that's my current theory and I'm sticking with it, in the hope that it's suddenly going to click in my body.

Rshard · 30/05/2018 07:49

That’s brilliant laksa, I love getting in stuff that used to be too small - great NSV well done you!

Yesterday’s food
B - ff yoghurt with blackberries
L - salad with ham cheese and mayo
D - hm salmon patties, rocket cucumber and chipotle mayo

I don’t eat loads of cheese but some most days so I’m going eat a bit less I think, maybe every other day.

BIWI · 30/05/2018 07:50

I think there might be something in that, @farine. I've also read - can't remember where, but I'll see if I can find it - that hard training can lead to water retention

And then you will also be laying down muscle too, I'd have thought.

The key test, therefore, would be to see if your measurements have changed.

One of my work colleagues ran a marathon last year, and although she wasn't doing it for weight loss, she did tell me that despite the training (and she was doing it by the book), she was gaining rather than losing weight!

farine · 30/05/2018 07:55

I've definitely gained weight in the last six months - and I am a stone and a half heavier than when I ran my first marathon in 2016. So something is certainly happening there, and I was watching what I ate rather than using it as an excuse to hoover up the fridge contents. Although I think we probably relied on Deliveroo a bit too much as I was training so much no time to prepare dinner!
I am definitely tubbier rather than piling on muscle ...But my legs still look good because of the running Wink

I will crack this!

BIWI · 30/05/2018 07:56

Exercise is clearly bad for you then Wink

Laska5772 · 30/05/2018 08:01

id say so BIWI Grin

would rather read a book in a garden chair

BIWI · 30/05/2018 08:03

I Googled 'weight gain during marathon training' and loads of pages came up! So it's obviously a 'thing'.

Have a read of this

The opening couple of paragraphs:

Have you gained weight during marathon training? You're not alone. Some marathoners-in-training hope to lose weight during their training, but they're surprised when they actually gain a few pounds or hit a weight loss plateau. One explanation is that as you're training, you're building more muscle mass, which is denser than fat. So while that may translate to an overall weight gain, your body fat percentage has decreased and you're more toned than you were before.

Another explanation is that your body is learning to store carbohydrates as fuel (glycogen) for your long runs. Those glycogen stores are important to completing your long runs and marathon without "hitting the wall", but you may see a couple extra pounds on the scale on certain days. Your body also requires additional water to break down and store the glycogen, so that will also add extra weight.

I have no idea if this (or any of the other advice) applies to you. But one thing I would really recommend is that you read The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance, by Drs Volek and Phinney

That might help you understand how you can dovetail low carbing in with your training.

LeapinLizards · 30/05/2018 08:35

When I did a marathon, I definitely put on weight. I didn't weigh myself so I don't know how much. Some of it was muscle - my once slender legs became like those of a football player - and some just general weight gain (clothes tighter etc).

borowren · 30/05/2018 08:46
Sad I've had my first gain this morning...nearly 2lbs! I'm trying not to be too disappointed (I was warned!) but it is hard when I haven't done anything different to the first couple of weeks, when I was losing. Reading the thread, I'm definitely low on fat content, but struggling to add it in. That's going to be my challenge for the next few days!
StuntNun · 30/05/2018 08:58

Farine I think you need to take measurements. We have seen strange things happening on this way of eating before, I remember someone went down two dress sizes but hadn't lost any weight! Do you have an item of clothing that used to be slightly snug that you could try on to see if it feels loser anywhere?

LeapinLizards those macros sound fine when you're near goal.

maxthemartian · 30/05/2018 09:06

I made a lovely treat yesterday - this Diet Doctor chocolate and peanut square thingy.

It worked out much lower-carb than the recipe, not sure if that's because it's an American site and their peanut buttery is all sugared?

Anyway I used:
100g Lindt 90% - 14g carbs per hundred grams (7g sugar)
50g Meridian crunchy peanut butter - 5.8g carbs (2.95 sugar)
35g chopped Brazil nuts - 1.5g carbs (0.8g sugar)

I used half and half butter and coconut oil, carbs zero or negligible.

So total carbs for the whole thing - 14.3 and I got twelve squares from it so just 1.2g carbs per square and felt like a massive treat.

ajandjjmum · 30/05/2018 09:06

I was up one lb two days ago, stayed the same yesterday and up another lb today!

Thank God for this thread - apart from trying a new woe which definitely showed results in the first two weeks (still half a stone down), I am not disheartened as I would normally be - just determined to stick at it.

Thanks BIWI and everyone for all of your input - so so helpful. Flowers

maxthemartian · 30/05/2018 09:08

Oh for an edit button! Sorry counted sugars not carbs for the chocolate it's 21.3g carbs for the whole thing and 1.8g per square.

farine · 30/05/2018 09:13

I've bought that book biwi when you mentioned it a week or so ago, but yet to start it will look through this evening and report back.

I've a pair of jeans I've been avoiding for a while stuntnun so will dig them out and see how they fit.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 30/05/2018 09:29

Hooray for Laska! Grin

I also did the orangutan arms in the air victory lap of the house this morning - am down 1lb, but it's an important one, taking me to 8 stone 13 - FINALLY cracked the stone barrier. And for an NSV, I noticed just this minute how much shinier and whiter my eyes are.

farine, my ex-SIL and I are the same height, and when she was a size 6 weighing 11 stone, I was a size 14 weighing 9 stone. The difference was that she was a runner and was made up of lovely, dense, sleek, heavy muscle. Don't underestimate how much muscle can weigh!
