Welcome to week 3!

As BIWI's away, she asked if I would start the week 3 thread. I've stolen her words from a previous week 3, as it's such a good explanation of bootcamp v. bootcamp light. Grin

Is there anyone that knows of a good explanation of the eating fats requirement. I think that it is so counter all we have been taught for so many years that it is difficult to get ones head around it.

Rshard · 29/05/2018 16:27

Thanks athle that’s really helpful. I was a bit naughty last weekend so back on it big style this week but I’ll use your advice if I hit a stall. I’m half expecting it tbh as it happened just before hitting goal on another regime.

Has anyone got any ideas to make chicken a bit more exciting? My partner is taking chicken and salad for lunch almost every day. I usually either put a little harissa paste on the chicken before cooking it, or cook the chicken plain but stir some chipotle paste into the accompanying mayo.

I had a look in the supermarket for marinades etc but everything seemed so high in carbs.

RedPandaMama · 29/05/2018 17:12

@clare8allthepies my favourite is to wrap chicken in tinfoil, drizzle in olive oil, garlic and mixed herbs then cook for 20 mins at GM5. Lovely and moist and just really delicious and inoffensive. Works really well with salads.

StuntNun · 29/05/2018 17:13

Yarboo we're replacing our carb calories with fat calories. You could also replace the carb calories with protein and fat calories, but you have to replace them with something. If your body requires 2,000 calories a day then you need to eat in the region of 1,500-1,800 calories to lose weight at a good rate. If you go any lower than this then it is often counter-productive in the long term. Mosely's blood sugar diet is 800 calories for the first few weeks but that is designed to reverse diabetes by mimicking the effect a gastric bypass has on food intake. The 800 calories for eight weeks may well produce a faster weight loss than 1600 calories but it is also much more difficult to stick to.

Rshard · 29/05/2018 17:14

I like to mix mayo with pesto and then add chicken claire8. Pesto is ok now we’re in week 3

ilovecherries · 29/05/2018 17:37

Well, I wouldn't be having that one sad little egg on its own. I'd eat it with spinach and brocilli, asparagus too if I'm feeling flush. But yes, before I was having two eggs at lunchtime, with the veg, but lately it's been one egg, or half a can of tuna, with maybe have the fat I'd been eating before.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 29/05/2018 17:44

Well, I wouldn't be having that one sad little egg on its own.

Hah! I'm reading one of my grandfather's war-time government approved grow-your-own books at the moment; "The Book of the Tomato". One of the chapters is headed "The tomato in the open", and I pictured it all small and panicky, looking around for somewhere to scuttle under cover. And now it can join your sad, lonely egg and they'll both be happy.

I fell off the wagon spectacularly over the weekend but I’m still happy with the 5lb loss I’ve had so far. I’m going to try and stick to boot camp light but I’m craving a Chinese takeaway. Does anyone have a nice stir fry recipe? I’m struggling as most Chinese sauce is rather sugary

clare8allthepies · 29/05/2018 18:47

Thanks @RedPandaMama that sounds lovely, got some in the oven right now for tomorrow’s lunch.

Rshard I think I’ll have some pesto mayo tomorrow, I love pesto (though DP isn’t a fan) thank you!

Seafour · 29/05/2018 19:02

Laska thanks, kefir will be a new experience for me but I would rather make my own, are you in the midlands? Would love to steal some culture.

Abbey your insulin story is quite frightening, it does make me wonder when the diabetes information from the NHS will catch up with the lchf evidence. I have a friend with a DD who has type 1 and because they are following a keto diet the hospital dietitian is learning more from them.

Ilovecherries the crush gets stronger every day❤️

Stunt I'm going to make my own kefir and start making my own yogurt again. I had Jewish grandparents so gherkins are essential, It's nice to know there are some low carb ones out there as I miss them. Love kimchi too. I just feel that with surgery looming and the risks so high that I must take responsibility for being as healthy as possible beforehand.

I'm beginning to wonder if I need more fat, I eat quite small portions as I have a small appetite (strokes chin thoughtfully).
Any tips on how I can convince DH to cook more appropriate meals with more fat would be welcome.

Day out today buying bridesmaids dresses for DGD's and birthday tea for DGS. Avoided all carbs except my green salad at lunch.

B yogurt
L chicken salad
D scrambled eggs made with butter & cream

One flat white coffee
Pot of green tea
Lots of water

qumquat · 29/05/2018 19:14

@ilovecherries could it be that you have reached a good weight for your body and it won't actually go any lighter unless you starve yourself? As I understand it our weight levels off once we reach our natural 'set point' which varies from person to person.

ilovecherries · 29/05/2018 19:31

I've still got a fair amount of fat, qumquat, and I'm really struggling to get my waist less than half my height, so I think there is a way to go yet. It's a pity you can't choose where it comes off though, as it's all on my front. Huge boobs still (32K), squidgy tum, thick waist (although about 15 inches small than it wasBlush). Completely arse-less though Angry, and my face and limbs are quite slim/thin even.

BIWI · 29/05/2018 19:32

@uneractivethyroidmum - have you checked out the recipe threads? There are definitely some stir-fry recipes in the meat or chicken threads. The recipe threads are all stickied in the Bootcamp topic.

@clare8allthepies (you'll have to change that user name!) as above, check out the recipe threads.

But one that I make is a sort of version of chicken tikka - cut chicken thighs or breasts into decent chunks, and marinate in a mixture of olive oil, lemon or lime juice, finely chopped garlic, finely chopped ginger, a sprinkling of some Chinese 5 spice powder, a dash or so of good quality soy sauce (Kikkoman is best as it's properly made, which means it's much lower in carbs) and some freshly ground black pepper.

Leave to marinate for at least half an hour, and then grill it or griddle it (or barbecue it on skewers)

DramaAlpaca · 29/05/2018 19:34

Hmm. Having read today's posts I think I need to up my fat intake.

That means more butter & oil for me as I really, really can't bring myself to eat the fat on meat.

StuntNun · 29/05/2018 19:39

Have you tried BPC, Seafour? it can be a useful tool to get extra fat into your diet when you find it hard to get enough calories in. Also coconut oil is supposed to be good for gut health so it could be another supporting food, although you will need to be sure you are eating nutrient-dense foods to get your vitamins and minerals.

Laska5772 · 29/05/2018 19:47

Destinysdaughter · 29/05/2018 19:49

This is a delicious marinade for lamb steaks

1 tsp Cumin
2 tsp Ground coriander
1/2 tsp chilli powder
2tsps dried mint
Tablespoon of lemon juice
2 tablespoons of olive oil. Marinade for at least an hour

Yummy!

Laska5772 · 29/05/2018 19:53

Seafour sadly no and I dont have enough to share right now (having just given some away ) but the friend who gave me some of her grains to get me started got them originally from here I think..

AthelstaneTheUnready · 29/05/2018 19:55

Eeek!

seafour could you take oil 'neat'? Maybe a teaspoon of really good quality fruity olive oil in the morning (like medicine!) . DH does this and I may start now

Laska5772 · 29/05/2018 19:57

Grin Im not a very fast runner though..

Hello all. I've been invited to join in. I'm marking my spot for when my brain works.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 29/05/2018 20:00

Welcome, Year!

Fortunately, you don't need a brain for this - you just need to read BIWI's spreadsheet. Grin
