Week 4 – Is this the new normal? Because it feels great!

BerylStreep · 28/01/2018 22:20

Welcome to the week 4 thread of Bootcamp. I enjoyed the power of wielding BIWI’s big stick last week so much that I am staying on for another week. Grin Normal service will be returning next week.

So week three was great – as well as lots of impressive scale victories, there were loads of NSVs – bras moved to the next hook, colleagues commenting favourably, feeling as if there is more energy, along with err, some less orthodox NSVs such as smaller earlobes and re-emerging pubes. Grin

The thing that has really struck me is the number of posters who have lost significant weight over the last year, and are sticking with it and still seeing progress. That’s a fantastic inspiration to us all, and really shows how this WOE works long-term.

There are a number of posters who have committed to doing dry February (along with a few who are kicking a diet coke habit). This starts on Thursday, but it goes without saying that this is not an excuse to put as much away as possible before that! note to self

Thanks to BIWI who has been working hard on creating the Bootcamp recipe threads. There are loads of great ideas there to avoid menu boredom.

So KOKO, and good luck for the weigh in, but also remember the scales are only one indicator of progress. Here is the link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness.

ASD - I have just downloaded Headspace too, I have just ended some sessions of CBT with our local talking therapy service for anxiety. I had been doing much better and then had a flare-up these last couple of weeks. There's something about January that is just harder than the rest of the year for me.

toomuchicecream · 03/02/2018 12:42

It's taken me 3 or 4 attempts followed by falls off wagon over last couple of years, but I've now conclusively proved to myself beyond any shadow of doubt that LCHF makes a significant difference to the mobility issues caused by my neurological condition. I don't know whether it's cutting sugar, gluten or something else (additive in pre-processed food?) that's made the difference but I'm not experimenting to find out which. But having finally accepted the sad truth of no more chocolate, biscuits etc ever, it's become incredibly easy to stay on track. I'm no longer depriving myself, I'm doing myself a massive favour 😄

BIWI · 03/02/2018 13:56

The whole sugar thing explains not only comfort eating but also the need to drink alcohol. Apparently when people give up drinking they often crave sugary things.

TitusAndromedon · 03/02/2018 14:05

Mentally I’ve had a bad week. There’s a lot going on at the moment and a lot of uncertainty, and I’m emotionally just really struggling to deal with it all. Food is very much a matter of control for me, though, and that has been fine. Saying that, I’m going to need to cut out dairy. Cheese, in particular. I’m hoping I can still have two cups of tea with milk every day, but I’ll see how it goes. I didn’t weigh at the very start of boot camp, but did a few days later, and I’ve only lost about four pounds since then. It’s fine. I’m continuing this way of eating indefinitely, so I don’t feel particularly hung up on the scales, but if I want to see a difference eventually I will need to cut out the cheese at least.

BlackMozart · 03/02/2018 14:26

BIWI well done on sticking drybuary for 3 days and counting Wink
Good luck sayrra!!
I have said on here before that I do mindfulness meditation (in a variety of ways to keep things interesting) and I am definitely more emotionally regulated when I do.
Beryl that’s interesting about the dairy and also about the itchy ears. I had them for 2/3 weeks now and it’s really annoying. I wonder whether I should get tested to see what the intolerance is but perhaps given dairy is a very typical one starting there is maybe the best idea.

Sadly as a queen of yo yo dieting over many years I can go back to 2006 when I went to a nutritionist who got me to cut out wheat, dairy and sugar and I lost 2.5 stones in 5 months, felt great, so great in fact I ended up pregnant (a big surprise) at 43 with my DD2!! In other words I do know that cutting out dairy (I was allowed goats cheese only) works for me but I think I just haven’t wanted to face that. My ‘victim’ self says to me ‘but you’ve given up bread, does it have to be cheese as well?’

Perhaps the uncomfortable truth is that it does. I’ve bought goats cheese and unsweetened coconut milk today but I also have a fridge full of cheese because DH bought extra Gouda slices for some reason. So I am going to use up some cheese and cream in a crustless quiche tonight and then start on Monday for the rest of the month and see whether a combination of no alcohol and just butter and goats cheese for dairy helps with the weight loss and itchiness 😊
I’ll give my DS the extra cheese in his packed lunches.

BIWI · 03/02/2018 14:33

Are you being ultra low with your carbs? I think @ilovecherries suffers from the itching when she goes too low.

BlackMozart · 03/02/2018 15:03

Yes I do remember reading that BIWI but I doubt it. I have a couple of squares of dark chocolate most days, and up to now about 4 cups of coffee with a splash of lactofree whole milk. I almost always have two lc veg with my dinner - not huge portions but enough - and salad stuff (lettuce, cucumber, sometimes avocado and a couple of cherry toms) with lunch. I would have though I’m close to 30-40g a day?

BlackMozart · 03/02/2018 15:10

Food for today which is reasonably typical:
B hot water and lemon,
Late morning: celeriac mash fried with two slices mozzarella wrapped in small pieces of Parma ham coffee
Late lunch: smoked salmon and cream cheese parcel, thumb size piece of cheddar, cucumber, rocket, I slice wafer thin ham coffee, 2 squares dark choc
D will be leek and cheese crustless quiche with more salad; coffee, choc
I need to drink my water so am going to fill up a bottle now

Actually it isn’t typical to eat this much cheese as I normally have eggs for breakfast.

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness · 03/02/2018 17:07

B creamy coffee, Asian lamb meatballs, cucumber
S cappuccino
L coconut lamb curry with half a bag of pre chopped stir fry veg lobbed in
D roast chicken breast with skin on, celeriac mash.
W why do I find this aspect so hard?? Does anyone have any tips?

velocitykate · 03/02/2018 19:00

It's my first day today. Does this sound ok?

B 2 scrambled eggs, 3 rashers of bacon
L green salad with a little onion and cucumber, sliced chicken, a hard boiled egg and mayonnaise
D salmon fillet with green beans, broccoli and mushrooms.
S some pork scratchings
W currently on 2 litres. Have also had two cups of peppermint tea.

The water I'm drinking is fruit infused - is this ok?

Thanks

Scabbersley · 03/02/2018 19:17

I now have TWO broken teeth Hmm

Legotastic · 03/02/2018 19:20

Shock Scabbersley pork scratching related?

nekobus · 03/02/2018 19:24

OMG scabs not the pork scratchings again?? You poor thing.

Grand is fuzzy water any good? I do the fruit tea bag in fizzy water trick and it does help (2 bags in a 2L bottle) makes it a bit more interesting.

Today has been ok but I've been out & about so not managed even half of my water yet....

B - 2 babybel, tea and almond milk
L - egg muffins, chorizo, cucumber, babybel
D - Wetherspoons - not ideal but made do with chicken breast burger minus bun minus chips added bacon cheese and avocado then smothered the salad in mayo.
S - I want to have some oppo ice cream but can't trust myself to not eat the whole tub Confused

YoLoHogwomanay · 03/02/2018 19:26

Sending positive and self-caring thoughts to those in emotional distress on here. I've been there and it's hard.

Can't believe your luck with teeth scabbers. with all the dairy/brassicas they should be strong as steel from the calcium!

velocity where is the fat? Eat. More. Fat!

Twoo · 03/02/2018 19:34

Oh no Scabs’ , poor teeth!

Hi ’Kate welcome. Looks ok apart from the onion (swap for shallots), and the fruit water I’d watch out. I’d check there is no sugar or carbs in it if you’re doing full fat Bootcamp.

Twoo · 03/02/2018 19:41

Just a little review on a none alcoholic spirit drink. I was seduced by the positive reviews I’ve seen recently for Seedlip Spice 94 and succumbed to buying on line. Well ..... it’s not for me. If you sip it straight it has a slightly oily feel to the lips. On adding a slim line tonic, it spoilt the taste of the tonic. I don’t really know why I bought it. I don’t drink that much anyway and I havnt had a drink this year so far. I’ve not even missed it. Just my thoughts. I recommend anyone to try before you buy.

B - None
L - Mooosive jumbo king prawns, spinach and coleslaw. Coffee with cream.
D - Steak, mushrooms, pepper cream sauce, Kale. Full fat plain yoghurt.

BadlyParkedRangeRover · 03/02/2018 20:05

Grand I'm sorry for your loss
Scabbersly I'll join you with a broken tooth! Not pork scratching related. I tripped with my hands in my pockets Blush
Currently have a lump on my head, a very sore nose, a split lip and I've sheared off the edge of a tooth. My hands and knees are very bruised but nothing's broken.
B: sausages, fried egg, fried mushrooms. Bit of tinned toms
L: nothing. Mouth hurt too much
D: A mild chicken curry, lots of yoghurt and a bit of caul rice.
Bit of a crap day, but frankly the way I fell I'm amazed I didn't shatter my front teeth!
I'm having a glass of wine, sorry dry February-ers.

BadlyParkedRangeRover · 03/02/2018 20:06

Twoo agree. Seedlip is odd, overpriced, flavoured water

SayrraT · 03/02/2018 20:09

velocity as long as the veg had butter or something added than that's fine. Also if you mean your water is fruit infused as in you add some fruit to it to flavour it then thats ok. I like cucumber in my water Grin

oh no Scabbersly thats not great!

Just back from the yard, today was ok. We did an excellent SJ round (we were doing a SJ round followed by simulated XC on an allweather track) but then a disasterous XC phase. We were emliminated at the first fence Grin Blush I wasn't even worried AT ALL about the XC because normally he doesn't have any problems with it.

twoo I've not tried the seedlips but my mum did and she said it was horrible so I've not been tempted but obviously many like it.

titus sorry you've had a rough week too Flowers for anyone whos had a difficult week. Though titus BC has only been running for 4 weeks so if you've lost 4lbs in that time then you've lost an ideal amount!!

velocitykate · 03/02/2018 20:09

Thank you. I had butter on my vegetables at tea time. Thanks for the tip about shallots - I didn't realise they have less carbs.

By fruit infused water, I mean I'm drinking it from a bottle that has a tube in the middle that you put fruit into - so there's a cut up clementine in there that is infusing into the water - I've been refilling the bottle all day without replacing the fruit, so I think the water can only contain tiny traces of fruit

YoLoHogwomanay · 03/02/2018 20:19

ouch rangerover . Gloves I say. Gloves! not pockets

YoLoHogwomanay · 03/02/2018 20:23

velocity you should also be smothering your salad in olive oil. Adding butter and possibly cream to your scrambled eggs. Stir frying all your veg in oil or butter. No boiled veg here plus its horrible and wet . Streaky bacon not back bacon. etc etc.

Adding double cream to coffee is a very luxurious benefit to this WOE too. And the cheese. OMG the cheese! Grin

nekobus · 03/02/2018 20:27

RangeRover that sounds very painful! Enjoy your wine I say Wine

I'm in the seedlip loving minority then! Having a nice glass of it tonight Grin

BerylStreep · 03/02/2018 20:38

Haven’t been on the thread much today as have been running around after kids & incapacitated DH, so just catching up now.

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness I struggle with water too. No tips, but thought you might want to know you’re not alone. I actually think that when I drink wine it is because I’m thirsty, but somehow the thirst signal just doesn’t get through.

Scabbers – 2 teeth Shock

BadlyParkedRangeRover ouch - that sounds sore.

Twoo I’ve bought some of the Seedlip and missed the Amazon delivery this afternoon. I was looking forward to it. I hope I’m in the same camp as Nekobus and will like it. I forgot to buy diet tonic water but when I eventually do get my Seedlip delivery I may try fizzy water with just a dash of tonic, which is how I drink gin. I'm not terribly fond of the idea of artificial sweeteners.
