New Year, New Start Week 2: This WoE works!

prettybird · 15/01/2018 08:10

Welcome to Week 2 - the one where many of us (especially the newbies) will see the biggest drops. For those that don't, the drops will come. We will have seen other benefits too: brighter eyes, smaller waist (with the reduction of dangerous visceral fat from around our organs) - and all without feeling hungry Smile Week 2 is also when I find that my pschological urge to snack reduces.

Remember that you still need to adhere to the Rules. This is not a forgiving Way of Eating and if you cheat, you will set back the process of getting your body to adapt to fat burning. Only one more week of being ultra strict - it is only one more week Smile If you're thinking of cheating, come on here and we will talk you down. It really helps if you are prepared and have low carb snacks with you, or drink some water when you think you are hungry.

Keep drinking the required water ( StuntNun has explained why this is important). Avoid nuts and seeds (unless you are veggie), all fruit (you can look forward to the odd treat of berries from next week) - and no alcohol or artificial sweetender for another week.

The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness is here to remind you to keep to the straight and narrow with the Rules and with resources to advise you. You can weigh-in if you choose to, but it is not compulsory. Over the weeks, your weight loss will start to average 1-2lb a week, sometimes more sometimes less .

The Week 1 Spillover thread is here.

Oh no blacktea Sad

I also laughed at Rugby & Pellet Grin

Unfortunately the roads are clear so I'll have to go to work Sad

prettybird · 18/01/2018 09:01

Hope your drive to work is OK SayrraT - tomorrow looks like it will be another snow day though! Snow forecast all day here in Glasgow tomorrow ShockSmile

Raindrops - it is normal for weight to fluctuate daily but it's great that you can see an underlying downward trend. There are some apps that other Boot Campers use which can even out the daily fluctuations and show the true trend.

blackteaplease - sorry to hear you are in a House of Lurgy. Remember, if you are tempted to have some carbs for a treat or boost, that they might give you a short term energy boost but a) there may be unpleasant consequences (if you have any intolerances) and b) (and more importantly) this WoE gives you more and more stable energy in the long term. You don't want to sabotage that.

Athelstane - I too am like a big kid in the snow. I always struggle to work while it is snowing: I find it hypnotic and just sit watching it. I find it magical while it is still snowing and want to go for a walk as soon as there is a proper layer of snow and the branches of the trees are all traced with snow.

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness - Star Great choices for your meal out. See, you ate well, enjoyed your meal and still stayed within this WoE Smile

TheWayOfTheWorld - well done for keeping on track while away. Sounds like it isn't easy - but you are doing it! Smile

Bendyruler - I've either just had the meatballs and given ds the chips at IKEA in the past or had the gravadlax. I know a wee bit of sugar is used in curing it - but it's washed off and I reckon the benefit of the oily fish outweighs it.

Tap water is getting really cold here and even with allowing it to come to our (cold) room temperature, it is still cold. I may try your trick of adding a wee bit of boiling water.

Ragz - great measurements. Interesting what you say about boob size. However, I'm a bit Confused, because last time I got to under 11 stone on HFLC (weight went back up again due to emotional/comfort eating while I was depressed), Bravissimo measured me as a 34DD, yet this time, at the moment I measure technically as 34F Confused Maybe as I continue my downward progress, my boobs will eventually follow the inch reduction too Smile

Morning everyone.

Delicious dinner last night cooked by DH of Salmon frittata from the Jamie Oliver 5ingredient book. He whipped the eggs with an electric whisk which I haven't done before and it came out especially good. It's funnny (and great!) how after a few days / a week of sticking to HFLC, I am "in the zone" and rarely tempted to cheat. I think I must be an abstainer, like some of the others on this thread. My DH is not quite in the zone yet because he hasn't read up as much about the diet and unlike many women is not in the habit of looking at food labels, e.g. Had some plain yoghurt that was still full of sugar. I'm trying to give advice when asked but not nag.

The lovely team PA at work has been bull buying ocado's low carb "carb zone" bread - 4g carbs per slice. It's quite nice toasted in a pinch.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 18/01/2018 09:45

I'm also full of cold this morning and craving the carbs. I just want beans on toast!

I have resisted and had some cheese and ham for breakfast. Mission to m&s at lunchtime to try and find some low carb soup I think.

It is freezing here!

headoutofthesand · 18/01/2018 09:46

I just had this very bizarre moment in my life when I was unpacking the supermarket delivery, came across the spinach, ripped the bag open and shoved a handful or two in my mouth. That has previously happened with chocolate and bread but never green veg! I am actually struggling to get all of the veg in the fridge & may have to completely change what goes where to accommodate this new WOE.

With water, until about 11am, my favourite drink is freshly boiled water which has cooled (i.e. I do a new mug each time rather than boil a kettle and let it sit). I find it much gentler to drink somehow and the taste is nicer than water out of the hot tap. Sometimes i forget about it & it is so cool as to be almost cold but mainly it is lukewarm. I always feels like I am giving my insides a hug!

Good luck in the house of lurgy. Both of mine were really grumpy with hand, foot & mouth.

Rshard · 18/01/2018 10:41

Very good headoutofthesand! I did something similar the other week, found a pound in my pocket and treated myself to a swede! Would previously have been sweets or chocolate

littleladylawyer · 18/01/2018 10:44

Morning all.

Grumpy this morning as it took 2 1/2 hours to get to work due to an overturned lorry, and DP is fuming as the neighbours' bins blew into his car and have dented it.

Have a lovely lunch planned of chicken and mushroom pate, cucumber, hard boiled eggs, lettuce and cheese to cheer me up though!

Hope everyone is coping with the weather and hope those in a lurgy house see quick recoveries!

nekobus · 18/01/2018 13:47

Great tip about warm water! I usually have either cold from the tap or hot from the kettle, can't believe I've not thought of warm Grin I've managed 2L at work today so far as it's so much easier to drink warm

lisbapalea · 18/01/2018 13:55

Just checking in an needing some inspiration as to why my weight is stalling - am on my own week 3 which I know is famous for stalls, but I don't think I lost anything (maybe 0.5lbs) in week two?

I think I might be not having enough fat? And there are some days when I am prob not having enough water, but I am def having 2L+.

Today:

  • FF total with some berries
  • Sainsburys mozzarella salad (I took out the tomatoes), with a small pack of chicken and a pack of olives
  • Dinner will be cheese and ham omelette, with salad and buttered broccoli
prettybird · 18/01/2018 14:14

lisbalpea - did you lose anything on Week 1 (forgive me, I can't remember)? You need to look at the pattern over a few weeks.

You possibly aren't having enough fat but I actually think your menu looks ok.

SayrraT · 18/01/2018 14:28

Do you have lots to lose lisbapalea?

I'm having family over at the weekend for my birthday, I'm going to make everything low carb.

How does it sound.

Celery soup (cream of)
Bacon burger casserole (from diet doctor) with salad
Low carb profiteroles

Snacks for when we are playing games:

Cheese crackers
Chorizo crackers
Brie puffs (diet doctor)
Mini cucumbers
Pepper sticks

Alwaysinmyheart · 18/01/2018 14:49

SayrraT looks good! You could also have things like guacamole, pate, nuts, cheesecake, mushroom soup.

Also how do you make low carb profiteroles please? They sound yum! 😀

Alwaysinmyheart · 18/01/2018 14:50

If you are eating almond flour you can also makes lovely low carb brownies!

prettybird · 18/01/2018 14:54

You've just indirectly reminded me that I need to order some inulin and erythritol, for making the cranachan for our Burns Supper (yes, I know it also has oats in it Blush).

I do like the sound of the low carb profiteroles Smile

OP posts:
nekobus · 18/01/2018 15:13

What's your chranachan recipe prettybird? I've got a burns Supper to do and would love to do some low carb if possible.

lisbapalea · 18/01/2018 15:30

I lost 2-3 lbs in week one - difficult to know 100% as I changed scales in the middle of that week!

I have 2stone I'd like to lose although I am sure I could lose more without looking skeletal!!

GailLondon · 18/01/2018 16:36

Hey everyone!

My workplace has a little shop in it which has just been refurbished - normally sells snack food, drinks and essential toiletries stuff (and very cheap staff discounted toothpaste and a whole range of certain medicines that my company makes).
I popped in today and was delighted to see a whole load of new Low-carb products! Its normally more of a crisps & chocolate kind of place.

Now they have
-Pip and Nut almond butter sachets
-4 different types of jerky/biltong at less than 1g carbs per pack

  • little tubs of mashed avocado
-spinach and hardboiled egg pots
  • mini cheeses
I'm so happy! 3pm at work is always my danger time for snacking and it will really help me keep on track if I can pop downstairs and buy an allowed snack every now and then.
Rshard · 18/01/2018 17:04

That sounds brilliant gaillondon

ThunderboltsLightning · 18/01/2018 17:33

I'm now down half a stone since mid December when I first started lurking on the Low carb threads. Not sure what my Christmas gain/loss was as I couldnt bear to look but it's good to know that overall i've had a good loss so far!

I'm not looking forward to the plateau though. I can be very "fuck it" normally. Even 1lb per week would be alright.

Taking photos to hopefully notice some changes even when the scales aren't being so friendly and i need to get a tape measure too.

BerylStreep · 18/01/2018 18:01

lisbapalea are you in ketosis? Do you have any ketostixs that you could use to test? If you don't, then pharmacies sell them for about £5 for a tub of 50 of them.

Instead of looking at the digits on the scale, have there been any NSVs?

BerylStreep · 18/01/2018 18:02

Prettybird have pm'd you. Hope that is ok.

SayrraT · 18/01/2018 18:37

I've no idea if the profiteroles will work or taste nice, I remember seeing them mentioned (on a very very long ago BC). I just googled fir a recipe. I'll let you know how they are.

prettybird · 18/01/2018 18:52

Thanks Beryl - I'll get the laptop off ds so that I can check my messages (can't read messages on the app - nor even know "I've got mail" Hmm)

lisbalpea - if you've been drinking enough water, ketostix don't always give an accurate result according to BIWI - that's why they're not really recommended on Boot Camp (although some Boot Campers find them reassuring).

I'd suggest looking at your weight loss as an average. You said you'd lost 2-3lb in the first week on your analogue scales (I went back to check Wink) - and another 1/2lb since then. That is still c3lb over 2.5 weeks. That's a good start Smile. Not everyone gets the whoosh. KOKO and you will see the results. And remember the NSVs. How are your clothes feeling?

OP posts:
prettybird · 18/01/2018 18:56

Thunderbolts - the plateau can indeed be frustrating. But we're all on it together, so vent your frustration here rather than fall face first into carby twatdom Grin

OP posts:
prettybird · 18/01/2018 19:09

Nekobus - I'll be making a cranachan recipe up based on ones I've done before.

I'll toast a mix of rolled oats and inulin (using inulin will be a first) until the oats are browned and inulin caramelised, then whip some cream and stir through raspberries, the caramelised oats (reserving a few raspberries and oats) and some whisky. Make sure not to over whip the cream as it "sets" further with the whisky. Serve in pretty glasses decorated with the reserved raspberries and caramelised oats.

The haggis is not Boot Camp compatible either because of the barley in it Blush - but I'll serve it with loads of well-buttered mashed neeps (swede). I'll do mashed potatoes for dh and ds (and whoever else we have round).

I usually do a starter of seared king scallops which I serve on creamed celeriac, with black pudding, crispy streaky bacon and possibly some grilled goats cheese. I also have some apple jelly I might use - rather than the caramelised/fried thick slice of apple that I used to use.
