Week 3 - the parting of the way! - Low Carb Bootcamp

BIWI · 23/10/2017 07:26

Morning all

Here's the Spreadsheet

Hope you've seen a good result, making for a very satisfying first two weeks.

Now. Those two weeks were probably quite tough, so if you want to, you can now move on to Bootcamp Light - the rules are on the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

Essentially this means you can start to skip breakfast (or another meal) if you want to - if you're finding that you're not hungry. (Please don't skip meals for any other reason)

You can also introduce some fruit - mainly berries - in moderation, and also nuts and seeks - again, in moderation - and alcohol - IN MODERATION!

But. It's very often the case that in weeks 3 and 4 your weight loss will slow right down. Sometimes you may see a slight gain, even though you know you've been following Bootcamp to the letter. So you may not want to relax things quite yet.

Entirely up to you.

Remember, though, if you choose to stay on Bootcamp, please remember to make sure you're getting your carbs in the most part from vegetables and fruit - you need that for proper nutrition.

If you like you can do a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

But whatever you choose - good luck and I hope you have a good week. Flowers

Continuing with the celeriac obsession, I'm wondering if the differences might arise from something like the Popeye iron in spinach thing Grin

ilovecherries · 27/10/2017 09:51

I know it keeps being said, but daily fluctuations are normal. I'm a daily weigher because the fluctuations give me an overall picture that I find reassuring. When I weighed weekly, I had too much emotion invested in that one weigh in. But if they upset you, then don't do it. There is jo way you gained a pound of fat overnight, it's just a normal reflection of how much is in your bowel, how much water you drank, how much salt you've had, how you are balanced on the scales etc etc. For me, this diet (using it in the wider sense, not the weight loss meaning), means I can be less cranky about food.

SayrraT · 27/10/2017 10:00

Yes pretty that's right, if you are looking at a carb count on an American site you need to minus the fibre.

Does that make any difference?

SoMuchToBits · 27/10/2017 10:02

Furry, does the Indian restaurant also do a Niramish (or similar mixed veg curry type thing)? (I'm right in thinking you're vegetarian?) I love a Niramish, and as long as you make sure you pick out any potatoes (which it may or may not have) it should be fine.

Gammeldragz · 27/10/2017 10:33

Luis re celeriac, it may be like my leeks panic, where I had looked at american carb count - they include fibre, we don't.

I've been consistently under 12 stone all week, so hoping to still be there for weigh in Monday!

Gammeldragz · 27/10/2017 10:34

Ouis not Louis!

OuaisMaisBon · 27/10/2017 10:43

SayrraT, the same place which gives 9.2 carbs per 100 gms gives a fibre content of 1.8 for the same amount. Assuming we deduct the fibre from the total value, that would still give 7.8 carbs per 100, wouldn't it?

OuaisMaisBon · 27/10/2017 10:47

It's actually Ouais, Gammel, but not to worry, I've been called all sorts of different versions on here 😀
I don't know, I think I might pretend I've never seen anything but the figure on the spreadsheet and carry on deluded - it's stlll half the amount of carbs as in a potato!

ilovecherries · 27/10/2017 10:53

Celariac-gate is beginning to remind me of bean-gate from the last bootcamp Grin. I wonder if every bootcamp develops vegetable angst of one sort or another?

Thiswillbemyusername · 27/10/2017 10:58

@ilovecherries I was used to daily fluctuations but I've been consistently one weight for at least a week at a time recently so it had caught me off guard a bit! I'm not worried about it though Smile

Scabbersley · 27/10/2017 11:52

@JumpingIntoLCHF

Wagamama - I had bang bang cauliflower which was delicious but there's sugar in the sauce, wok fried greens, beef tatami (cold beef starter), miso soup and pickles Smile

Scabbersley · 27/10/2017 11:53

I was surprised when I saw the carb count of celeriac, it's quite high. Also grows underground which I thought was a no no!

prettybird · 27/10/2017 12:07

Scabbersley - swede (aka turnips or neeps in Scotland also grows underground but is relatively low in carbs Smile

Can't remember what English turnips are (on the MN app so difficult to see the spreadsheet) but I wonder if the "underground" = high carbs goes with the speed that that things grow. So faster growers = more sugar = higher carbs.

Both celeriac and swede are "slow" growers Smile - it's one of the reasons why they're not grown much "at home" as they take so long to mature.

ilovecherries · 27/10/2017 12:39

Mmmmm. Just had two keto pancakes with crisp streaky bacon for brunch. I could almost have been in America. Had a side of spinach.

Veryflummoxed · 27/10/2017 13:03

* I've been called all sorts of different versions on here* sorry, I’ve been calling you Quais.

Mimosa1 · 27/10/2017 13:11

Hi everyone,
Looking forward to the weekend!!!
Grimbles - I've bookmarked your post, the rösti sound amazing! I have all the ingredients although admit to being slightly intimidated by the celeriac. They sold at a unit price when I was at the greengrocer and I though I was being clever by choosing the most enormous biggest one, but it's a woody monstrosity and has been looking ominously from the back of the fridge for a couple of weeks.

Harlots I know exactly what you mean about the chocolate mousse - I did the same thing with 100% chocolate and it was foul. I think there might not be enough coco butter to emulsify so I ended up with bitter chocolate scrambled eggs slightly leavened by egg whites. Yuck. I think 90% choc might be ok though.

Our guests came last night and I didn't miss the roasties as I'd made loads of garlicky sprouting brocoli with chili to go with the roast chicken as well, though may have overdone the strawberries and cream afterwards. I also tried the Seedslip "gin" that I think scabbers recommended previously? It's very nice - no alcohol or sugar
But no artificial sweeteners. With a glass of club sofa and a twist of lime in a pretty glass, felt like a real treat, although it is very expensive for what it is (flavoured water basically). However, our lovely guests arrived at 7.30 and didn't leave till midnight and we have a 4m old who is still waking several times a night at the moment, and I am cross-eyed with tiredness. Hard to believe there was a time when my nights out started at midnight! Being British, DH and I were far too polite to kick them out, especially as we don't know them well plus they are really nice but there may have been tears of fatigue this morning, not just the baby's. Have had a very civilised lunch near DH's office with the baby - an end of month Friday treat - and MNing while the baby naps so i'm feeling a bit more human!

Veryflummoxed · 27/10/2017 13:18

Well I’ve had a good look on line and there are more variations on the carbs in celeriac that there are ways of adding fat to it. I love love love celariac so I believe BIWI. Plenty of other sites agree with her. Sorry 😐 can’t link, don’t know how toBlush

Veryflummoxed · 27/10/2017 13:21

I was really in need of comfort today so made myself my first ever chai latte (with almond milk and cream). It was lovely.

FurryTurnip · 27/10/2017 14:04

Thank you SoMuch for the recommendation- have never heard of Niramish but will look out for it.

It's lucky my first LCHF outing is to an Indian as I suspect it's the safest bet. Unlike the set menu Moroccan evening I am going to soon which was booked weeks ago- flatbread and cous cous- may throw stuff over my shoulder into a potted plant!

Hope everyone has a good and focused weekend!

SoMuchToBits · 27/10/2017 14:17

I've just thought Furry that mushroom bhaji would be another option.

Do you have the menu for the Moroccan? Might be worth looking ahead to see if there's anything you can have. Things like falafel, although made from pulses and higher carb than we're aiming for, would definitely be lower carb than flatbreads/couscous/rice. Our local Turkish restaurant does some nice dishes involving aubergines/yoghurt type dips, but I guess with a set menu you might be more limited.

FurryTurnip · 27/10/2017 14:30

Oh yes mushroom Bhaji, I always forget that's not battered like onion bhaji.

Think the Moroccan menu is a houmous and flatbread starter, vegetable tagine which should be ok (though possibly sweet potato...) with cous cous and flatbread. Can't remember the pudding.

Am hoping for olives on table so I can nibble them with a teaspoon of houmous, then just avoid breads at end, then stick to mint tea at end as I'm "too full for pudding".

I know I could also just tell people I am on LCHF diet but it's a big group, don't know some very well and just can't be bothered with explaining or 'defending' myself about it all night.

Realistically though like the PP (sorry forgot who it was) with the child's birthday cake, most people won't even notice what I am eating so can put stuff on plate as shuffle it around then pass to my DH!

HarlotsWeb · 27/10/2017 15:02

Tiny rural airports are not at all good places for finding LCHF food...

Rshard · 27/10/2017 15:23

Checking in - hello everyone!

B - buttery scrambled eggs
L - tuna pate from M&S, cucumber. Someone recommended the pate, can’t remember who but thanks it was lovely. Nice change from salad
D - going to French restaurant, went there earlier in boot camp and was fine so just need to ignore the bread and sweets again!

TempusEejit · 27/10/2017 15:47

I had the celeriac debate on a low carb forum recently. As far as I could make out the higher carb count comes from the USDA in America; however check any label on British celeriac and it states a much lower carb count which is more in line with BIWI's spreadsheet. I've found this nutrition database on the Gov.uk website which lists celeriac as having 2.3g carbs per 100g (see attachment on there):

www.gov.uk/government/publications/composition-of-foods-integrated-dataset-cofid

I'm happy to trust our own country's info rather than that of another country whose farming and agricultural practices are quite a bit different to our own. Also our Gov't website lists somewhere that celery and celeriac are known allergens for some people - I guess they'd be extra careful with any nutritional info relating to it. Finally my own intuition tells me that celeriac can't be almost as many carbs as potato when it's only a little sweeter and way less starchy!

prettybird · 27/10/2017 16:16

I've got a SV and a sort of NSV to report.

The SV is that I've now lost 2 stone since I started Boot Camp at the end of May Smile - I've seen 12stone 13lb 2 days in a row - in fact this morning after doing Ripped in 30, I was 12stone 12lb! Smile Hopefully I'll be able to maintain or even improve on that by Monday Smile

The NSV - albeit a bit of a Sad one - is that dh and I had a massive argument yesterday Sad and when he opened a bottle of wine last night because he felt he needed it, I didn't have any Smile Given that one of the reasons I put on so much weight last year was due to comfort eating because of the problems we've been having, I was pretty pleased with myself for not landing face first in a glass of wine, packet of crisps or a bar of chocolate Smile
