Preparing for Bootcamp - starting on Monday 9 October!

Lots of people have signed up for this one - no doubt thinking about Christmas and squeezing into that little black dress!

So in advance, here's some stuff to think about so you can get planning over the weekend.

1- How long is Bootcamp?

Bootcamp lasts for 10 weeks, so our final weigh-in will be Monday 18 December.

The first two weeks of Bootcamp are the strictest, to help you shift your body away from burning carbs for fuel, to burning fat for fuel.

After the two weeks are up, you can move to Bootcamp Light, which is a little bit more relaxed. If, though, strict Bootcamp is working for you, you can stay on that. Or you can do a hybrid, following Bootcamp during the week but switching to Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

2 - Bootcamp should be easy to follow

There is absolutely no need to weigh anything, or count the carbs in anything. Nor do we count calories. Just follow the rules (only 10 of them!) and you will be fine.

Low carbing isn't the easiest WOE (way of eating), because our contemporary diet is built around carbs. Just take a look at any high street coffee shop or takeaway - all carb central!

And you may find the first few days tough going, until your body adjusts, but once you're into it, it's a simple plan. It's made that way because I'm a lazy arse who can't be bothered with all that weighing and counting!

3 - Foods that you're not allowed to eat during Bootcamp

Absolutely NONE of the following:

pasta/noodles
rice
bread (in any form - so no wraps, bagels, pittas, naans, chapattis, etc)
barley/oats/quinoa (or other grains)
flour
cake/muffins/brownies/flapjacks
potatoes
other sweet vegetables - especially sweet potatoes/sweetcorn (the clue is in the name!)
pulses/legumes (e.g. peas, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans etc)
balsamic vinegar (it's made differently from other vinegars and is very high in carbs - wine vinegar is fine)

4 - Well what can I eat then?!

We're aiming to switch the ratio of macronutrients from carbs:protein:fat to fat:protein:carbs.

This is a high fat diet. This is something that blows most people's minds when they first start out low carbing. We've been told for the last 30-40 years that fat is bad for us, but this simply isn't true. It's a claim that was initially based on bad science and given further credence by politicians and the media.

Good sources of fat include olive oil, coconut oil, butter, cheese and cream. You will find that not only will your food taste absolutely delicious, but it's also very satiating. You will not be hungry on a low carb diet!

Other things to include in your diet are fattier cuts of meat and fish. Stop seeking out low fat chicken breast with no skin, and embrace the loveliness of roast chicken with lots of gorgeous crispy skin!

Buy mince with a higher fat content. It will have a much better taste than low fat stuff.

Fry your food rather than grill it, etc.

Your carbs on this WOE will come mainly from vegetables and salad. When I post the spreadsheet on Monday morning you'll see on the tabs at the bottom that there's a list of vegetables and their carb counts - if you stick to veg that's around 4g carbs per 100g or less, you'll be fine. Higher carb veg occasionally is OK.

If you've been used to basing your meals around pasta or rice - which lots of us do, especially if you buy a lot of ready meals, you'll have to re-think your approach to meals/cooking.

Here are some examples of meals that I might cook:

•Roast chicken with roasted vegetables• (e.g. shallots, leeks, fennel, courgettes, peppers, cauliflower). Veg roasted in olive oil, and oil or butter on the chicken skin

Marinated salmon fillets with stir-fried vegetables (salmon marinated for c. 20-30 minutes in olive oil, with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, lemon juice and Chinese 5 spice powder); veg could include mange tout, shallots, baby sweetcorn, celery.

... or serve it with egg fried 'rice' made from cauliflower

This is really easy and tastes surprisingly good - trust me! I resisted cauliflower rice for a long time, because I thought it would have too strong a cauliflower taste, but I was wrong.

To make this, separate the florets of a cauliflower, wash them, and then either pulse in a food processor until it's blitzed into small rice-like pieces, or use a box grater (this way is a bit messy, but works well if you don't have a food processor). In a wok or large frying pan, fry this in some light oil or coconut oil. It's all cooked through, which won't take long, push it all to the edges of the pan, and then in the 'hole' in the middle, add a little bit more oil, and then pour in a beaten egg. Let it set a little bit, and then stir it through the cauliflower, so it forms shreds

Sayrra point taken about the weighing!

I can't do a graph, but I started at 14st2 at the end of august, dropped to 13st 10 in 2 weeks, hung around there for a while bouncing up and down and then have started dropping again in the last couple of weeks and am claiming 13st6 now. So that's 10lbs in 6 weeks

I did see 13-4 yesterday, but I've not been well over the last day so that's probably because I couldn't keep anything down and was dehydrated!

HarlotsWeb · 08/10/2017 08:58

Can I join for this one? I can't access the spreadsheet from my phone but will add my name from my work pc on Monday, unless any kind soul wants to stick it on for me in the meantime. I have been ridding my house of carbs for the last week and am going to restock today with what I need.

ilovecherries · 08/10/2017 09:00

once, I couldn't bear full fat milk in tea either, so my so,union was to start drinking it much weaker, but black. And putting cream in coffee.

Yeah, BIWI the skin on my face looks much better on this woe, it's only the skin on my abdomen that's miserable. GP checked my liver function and platelets, and all good. I'm taking piriton and using E45 by the gallon. Taking fish oils at the recommendation of the pharmacist. I don't think it's low carbing, I think it's the actual weight loss as it's only on my fastest shrinking bits, and only started when I'd lost maybe two stone.

Veryflummoxed · 08/10/2017 09:00

can you use a splash of skimmed milk in tea? I really cannot bear full fat milk in it, have tried so often but it really ruins it. this was me eighteen months ago.* I decided it was easier to go black than got to full fat milk. It took quite a while to stop feeling deprived But I love my black tea now.*

BIWI · 08/10/2017 09:03

I felt the same about full fat milk but I'm used to it now. Too used to it, actually! Coffee is something I think I need to cut back on - or at least try to move towards black coffee - because I drink too much at work.

I've tried almond milk, but wasn't really too keen.

But like everything, changing your tastes doesn't happen overnight. And they won't change if you don't want them to!

Don’t know why the last bit was bold. The first was supposed to be. I’m not sure what I’m doing. Confused

BIWI · 08/10/2017 09:06

I think we have bold gremlins, @Veryflummoxed Grin

Great progress through your midsection, Sayrra, which is a problem area for so many of us. For better health, that's definitely where we want to be losing fat.

By the way, beautiful ankles.

I'll get some photos up today or tomorrow for comparison and (I hope) inspiration, but have recruited a colleague to the thread and trying to decide whether to name change! Blush

Can't believe how excited and ready I am for this Bootcamp.

Stowie3012 · 08/10/2017 09:08

Do we post our weight in pounds or kilos?

C4gammeldagthefirst · 08/10/2017 09:09

Ilovecherries I've had an awful itch reaction to some medication, GP prescribed a spray that contained a local anaesthetic. At the time it was the only thing that worked.

There is also a cream called EMLA which has the same local anaesthetic in, I'm not sure if you can buy over the counter, you might need a prescription.

Lenl · 08/10/2017 09:09

This is a little graph of my weight loss if anyone wants to see how even a fairly short term option like bootcamp can make a difference.

You can see from my weight (in lbs) that I have a way to go, though my BMI has gone from 36.1 to 30.2 so I'm in 7 weeks nearly out of obese range and into overweight.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 08/10/2017 09:21

Can I join in?

I've got about 3 stone to lose. Im not going to weigh though. I think it makes me a bit crazy!

Off for Sunday lunch today so I shall enjoy ceremonially eating the last roast potato (sob!)

Kicking the Diet Coke habit is going to be hardest!

2014newme · 08/10/2017 09:21

Wow lenl what are you eating? Talk me through it. What do you have for snacks?

BIWI · 08/10/2017 09:22

@Stowie3012 we post in pounds. If you weigh in kilos, look at the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet, and you'll see one that says 'conversion' - you can use this to convert your weight into pounds.

Here is my chart, I started in January at 21st 13.75lbs and I'm now just under 15st. I'm a daily weigher and you can see how much I can fluctuate, especially at the moment!

@2014newme
One of the great joys about low carbing is that you won't be hungry. You won't need to snack!

2014newme · 08/10/2017 09:39

Is there a list anywhere of suggested breakfast, lunch dinner? I've only just thought of doing this today when I saw the boot camp starts tomorrow so I'm playing cat here up!

HolgerDanske · 08/10/2017 09:44

Hi everyone, and BIWI Smile

I'm excited! Have been back on the lowcarbing quite strictly for a couple of weeks already and down by half a stone so don't expect a great loss to begin with once bootcamp proper starts, but that's ok, I'm happy just to be feeling so much better and more positive already!

Hi to all the newbies!! It's often difficult for people to envisage this WOE actually working, but it really, really does! And usually you find that long-held beliefs on what you can or cannot tolerate/like/eat quite quickly get broken down. You might actually find that your palate shifts quite markedly, so I'd say jump in regardless of any misgivings and give it a good go and you'll almost certainly be pleasantly surprised.

I'm in this for my health, as someone with blood glucose issues, but I also love the way I feel on it.

SayrraT · 08/10/2017 09:45

I wrote a long post and it's vanished Angry

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/10/2017 09:54

Hi BIWI, can I have a go at this.

I need to shift a stone plus, and have recently tried Louise Parker but gave up after two weeks! I think it would help to have support rather than the slog of going it alone.

I'm also trying to do sober October and can see myself failing that as well, but this might also help me be more committed to that target.

I'll miss by bran flakes for breakfast, but other than that I like the food that it looks like we are able to eat so all good there.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/10/2017 09:54

....not bran flakes, oat bran...

SayrraT · 08/10/2017 09:57

2014 I have a spreadsheet some where with meal ideas. I'll try and find it but also look at the recipe thread, BIWI posted a link earlier I think.

2014newme · 08/10/2017 09:58

Thanks

SayrraT · 08/10/2017 09:58

Meal ideas spreadsheet. I've not updated it in ages.

The one thing I regret is not taking more photos at the beginning. I loathed the camera and would do anything to avoid it. Now people tell me I look very different, but I can't see the evidence of it for myself.
