Preparing for Bootcamp - starting on Monday 9 October!

Lots of people have signed up for this one - no doubt thinking about Christmas and squeezing into that little black dress!

So in advance, here's some stuff to think about so you can get planning over the weekend.

1- How long is Bootcamp?

Bootcamp lasts for 10 weeks, so our final weigh-in will be Monday 18 December.

The first two weeks of Bootcamp are the strictest, to help you shift your body away from burning carbs for fuel, to burning fat for fuel.

After the two weeks are up, you can move to Bootcamp Light, which is a little bit more relaxed. If, though, strict Bootcamp is working for you, you can stay on that. Or you can do a hybrid, following Bootcamp during the week but switching to Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

2 - Bootcamp should be easy to follow

There is absolutely no need to weigh anything, or count the carbs in anything. Nor do we count calories. Just follow the rules (only 10 of them!) and you will be fine.

Low carbing isn't the easiest WOE (way of eating), because our contemporary diet is built around carbs. Just take a look at any high street coffee shop or takeaway - all carb central!

And you may find the first few days tough going, until your body adjusts, but once you're into it, it's a simple plan. It's made that way because I'm a lazy arse who can't be bothered with all that weighing and counting!

3 - Foods that you're not allowed to eat during Bootcamp

Absolutely NONE of the following:

pasta/noodles
rice
bread (in any form - so no wraps, bagels, pittas, naans, chapattis, etc)
barley/oats/quinoa (or other grains)
flour
cake/muffins/brownies/flapjacks
potatoes
other sweet vegetables - especially sweet potatoes/sweetcorn (the clue is in the name!)
pulses/legumes (e.g. peas, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans etc)
balsamic vinegar (it's made differently from other vinegars and is very high in carbs - wine vinegar is fine)

4 - Well what can I eat then?!

We're aiming to switch the ratio of macronutrients from carbs:protein:fat to fat:protein:carbs.

This is a high fat diet. This is something that blows most people's minds when they first start out low carbing. We've been told for the last 30-40 years that fat is bad for us, but this simply isn't true. It's a claim that was initially based on bad science and given further credence by politicians and the media.

Good sources of fat include olive oil, coconut oil, butter, cheese and cream. You will find that not only will your food taste absolutely delicious, but it's also very satiating. You will not be hungry on a low carb diet!

Other things to include in your diet are fattier cuts of meat and fish. Stop seeking out low fat chicken breast with no skin, and embrace the loveliness of roast chicken with lots of gorgeous crispy skin!

Buy mince with a higher fat content. It will have a much better taste than low fat stuff.

Fry your food rather than grill it, etc.

Your carbs on this WOE will come mainly from vegetables and salad. When I post the spreadsheet on Monday morning you'll see on the tabs at the bottom that there's a list of vegetables and their carb counts - if you stick to veg that's around 4g carbs per 100g or less, you'll be fine. Higher carb veg occasionally is OK.

If you've been used to basing your meals around pasta or rice - which lots of us do, especially if you buy a lot of ready meals, you'll have to re-think your approach to meals/cooking.

Here are some examples of meals that I might cook:

•Roast chicken with roasted vegetables• (e.g. shallots, leeks, fennel, courgettes, peppers, cauliflower). Veg roasted in olive oil, and oil or butter on the chicken skin

Marinated salmon fillets with stir-fried vegetables (salmon marinated for c. 20-30 minutes in olive oil, with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, lemon juice and Chinese 5 spice powder); veg could include mange tout, shallots, baby sweetcorn, celery.

... or serve it with egg fried 'rice' made from cauliflower

This is really easy and tastes surprisingly good - trust me! I resisted cauliflower rice for a long time, because I thought it would have too strong a cauliflower taste, but I was wrong.

To make this, separate the florets of a cauliflower, wash them, and then either pulse in a food processor until it's blitzed into small rice-like pieces, or use a box grater (this way is a bit messy, but works well if you don't have a food processor). In a wok or large frying pan, fry this in some light oil or coconut oil. It's all cooked through, which won't take long, push it all to the edges of the pan, and then in the 'hole' in the middle, add a little bit more oil, and then pour in a beaten egg. Let it set a little bit, and then stir it through the cauliflower, so it forms shreds

Reporting for duty BIWI lets see if I can do this bootcamp without any antibiotics (apart from the long term ones I'm on) or admissions to hospital Grin

Christmas party's are a doddle on this WOE especially if you get the menu before the event - I always opt for pate starter and request celery instead of bread. Main course choose the roast and just eat the meat and allowed veg, cheese and cheese for dessert.
Eating out is also easy it's about making the right choices. Except for charity balls where you can eat everything

C4gammeldagthefirst · 06/10/2017 15:11

If I could I would now be jumping up and down screeching, I have just posted the last message on the previous thread.

For those of you who are new - I have wheels instead of legs and spend many hours on a ventilator each day which renders me silent while I'm using it.

Grah0SoontobeaFitty · 06/10/2017 15:16

Prepping for bootcamp, got rid of all the carbytwatdom product.

shush -nobody mention I ate it all-

Getting the chill in the air here so will be doing broths and trying to balance portion control. Kept picking yesterday and polished of a whole chicken and family size bag of salad.

Going to try my 1st fathead pizza at the weekend. will do more planning as want to lose around 20lb of flab and add a few pound of muscle. Target in January was 180 from 236 been down and up and down again lowest 197 in September and bounced up 28lb in May on a particular bad 3 week holiday, had sooo much booze,

Don't forget Drink lots of LC fluid if you need to have a hot buttery carby??? fix - stick the butter in the black coffee. whisk and voila coffee and bagel surprise LCHF style.

( surprise is no bagel) Grin

Well off to start planning some meals for the next two weeks

YES!

I’ve fallen off the wagon on the last 2 bootcamps - I’m ready for another bash (and hopefully no falling off this one!)

For the milk in tea lovers. This was the almost unthinkable sacrifice when I first contemplated boot camp over a year ago. However I went cold turkey; consuming herbal, green and black tea completely milk free. To my surprise I was quickly enjoying loads of different herbal/green teas and just recently I have realised that I now enjoy my black milk free tea as much as I once enjoyed my builders brew.

Thanks for the thread and the brand new bootcamp BIWI. Feeling enthused and raring to go.

Kleptronic · 06/10/2017 15:40

Can't wait. Been stalled since the last one. On the positive side, I haven't put any on :)

prettybird · 06/10/2017 15:49

I have tried - but still hate - green teas. I won a whole selection of the monce and tried working my way through them - to no avail. I like rooibos (redbush tea) though and can drink it without milk but prefer it with milk so I'l drink more of it during Boot Camp.

As it is, our "normal" tea is a mix of earl grey and darjeeling - but I just don't like it without milk.

My biggest sacrifice - which no longer feels like a sacrifice - was giving up my glass of freshly squeezed with bits OJ in the morning. I used to claim that I couldn't function at all until I'd had it. Refused even to kiss to dh Shock Can't remember the last time I had OJ now Grin

Oncewaswho · 06/10/2017 16:24

I do actually like green tea and some herbal ones, also weak black tea, but nothing quite hits the spot like a strong brew with a splash of skimmed. Coffee is the real problem though, I have a milky coffee every morning and can't bear it black.

So is it no milk at all then? Not that I drink it apart from tea and coffee.

Kleptronic · 06/10/2017 16:30

Oncewas have your coffee with double cream.

Kleptronic · 06/10/2017 16:31

Chai tea is also good with double cream. Or as a latte in almond milk.

prettybird · 06/10/2017 16:32

Could you cope with cream in your coffee instead of milk? That's allowed! Shock

Alternatively many people swear by bullet proof coffee: coffee, coconut oil and butter whisked together Shock Never tried it myself but some people have that instead of breakfast. (If you google it, you'll see lots of emphasis on "grassfed butter" - that's because those are Amercian sites, whereas over here, almost all of our dairy coos are grass fed except for short periods in winter and you can always buy Anchor Wink).

prettybird · 06/10/2017 16:34

Oh - and what milk you do have, you need to change to full fat and not skimmed. It's amazing how quickly your taste buds re-adjust. And you may well find that you can make your "splash" even smaller1 Smile

TimeIhadaNameChange · 06/10/2017 16:44

One thing I'd say to newbies is, go and take some photos of yourself now! It doesn't matter what you think you look like, just go and take some. You will thank me in a few weeks!

I am definitely not one of those people who takes lots of selfies; I've taken more photos of myself in the last few months than there are of me in the preceding 36 years. Yet I wish I'd taken some at the start of BC in May. My 'earliest' ones (that I've deliberately taken this year) are from June, when a friend took some for my new passport. I was in my usual 'uniform' of jeans, and a new t-shirt. By chance this t-shirt was slightly too small, and though it didn't cling, it bunched up above my hips.

This turned out to be a GOOD THING, as subsequent photos show the t-shirt hanging nicely down and then I switched to tucking it in so I can see the gradual reduction of my muffin top.

Being able to visually track my progress has gives me a boost, especially at the times when my scales seem stuck. I also take some rather odd photos of my fat bits (ie my tummy - nothing but my tummy!) so I can see the difference in time there.

So that's my advice to one and all - get snapping and then get losing!!!

Gammeldragz · 06/10/2017 16:46

c4 enjoy the indulgences of the charity ball!

prettybird I put off trying bulletproof coffee for 6 months. It's actually lovely when made in a blender!

CarbyDiem · 06/10/2017 16:54

I'm in. New name for boot camp but ''tis I.

Rshard · 06/10/2017 17:13

I'm going to embrace the fruit teas. Bonus is the £2 saving a month from withdrawing from the office tea club!

Oncewaswho · 06/10/2017 17:24

Seriously draw the line at full fat milk in tea, I've tried and tried (we have it for the DCs) but it's vile. I'll go black. Coffee's harder, I use a machine to froth (full fat) milk which wouldn't work with cream or other substitutes

Veryflummoxed · 06/10/2017 17:49

Carbydiem who is I?

ilovecherries · 06/10/2017 17:58

If you haven't tried the Philly Cheese Steak recipe from the diet doctor dite, then you are missing out on one of life's great pleasures. I made it without the marinara sauce to cut the carbs a bit further, and we had it on top of a huge pile of spinach. Happy grunty sounds all around.

Gammeldagfinderonwheels · 06/10/2017 18:38

Hold on tight DH is steaming mad with me because I was late due to several epic wardrobe fails.
It's hard getting dressed with one arm and no legs working.
Fail 1 got useless arm safely into dress and missed with good arm which went through neck hole, I won't describe how I got out again without injuring myself or ripping the dress. Why DH thinks I need some help every morning putting my scruffs on but not when I'm getting glammed up I don't know.
I was shouting for him but he was in the garden with Lola.
10 minutes late

Fail 2 shoes, picked some lovely cream shoes but safely back in dress I decide they are too summer wedding. So I start swearing and pulling boxes out of shoe wardrobe. Find required shoes and bag.
20mins late

Fail 3 ready to go DH says I look lovely he calls lift and pushes me towards it, as we pass full length mirror I ask him to turn me so that I can look. OMG you can see a full inch and a half of bra before you get to the neckline of dress. I let off a string of words that would make a fish wife blush and include "why didn't you tell me".
Back into bedroom take dress off, put different bra on, put dress back on.
33minutes late.

At no point did DH tell me that the driver was downstairs enjoying a cuppa and playing with Smokey and Lola. Our bedroom opens onto galleried landing above open plan bit of ground floor.

I have been LC-ing for about two weeks, but with no access to the rules I was making some mistakes, so:
I have cooked some tasty items from LC recipe list, carefully measured these & put in MFP(my fitness pal) as recipes so I have a more accurate Idea of what I am eating nutrition wise.
I was going a bit mad with cream, so now, my tablespoon measure is my friend😊 I had 2T of double cream in my coffee this morning & 1T of vodka in a very large glass of San Pellegrino. This was actually plenty of vodka & if you like some of the artisan booze a great way to drink it as you can really taste it.
I have logged my food for today in MFP & it comes in at just under 1200 calls, but 68%fat. (I imagine some little troll-like creature inside MFP, head in hands, weeping! As they are always sending you little alerts about fat, etc). I am really full.
B- cream in coffee
L-2scrambled eggs, 3 rashers bacon
D broccoli & blue cheese soup, cauli-cheese, pork chop, vodka & soda.
No snacks

wombattoo · 06/10/2017 19:33

Hi all. Just checking in Smile

ClearEyesFullHearts · 06/10/2017 19:57

I don't really want to go down the cauliflower rice, courgette pasta route as no one else in the family would eat them

Fair enough, Oncewaswho, that's what I thought until an evening when cauliflower rice was pretty much the only extra side dish available (had been shopping rather carb free and had forgotten the usual staples). Turned out everyone liked it just fine, but then they like cauliflower to begin with. And courgettes.

Worth giving a try, just once or twice?

ClearEyesFullHearts · 06/10/2017 20:04

prettybird rooibos is nice with a bit of cream as well.

And your OJ story did make me smile. It's liberating to realise how we can change habits. It gives one hope, hope for the future...
