Preparing for Bootcamp - starting on Monday 9 October!

BIWI · 06/10/2017 09:06

Lots of people have signed up for this one - no doubt thinking about Christmas and squeezing into that little black dress!

So in advance, here's some stuff to think about so you can get planning over the weekend.

1- How long is Bootcamp?

Bootcamp lasts for 10 weeks, so our final weigh-in will be Monday 18 December.

The first two weeks of Bootcamp are the strictest, to help you shift your body away from burning carbs for fuel, to burning fat for fuel.

After the two weeks are up, you can move to Bootcamp Light, which is a little bit more relaxed. If, though, strict Bootcamp is working for you, you can stay on that. Or you can do a hybrid, following Bootcamp during the week but switching to Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

2 - Bootcamp should be easy to follow

There is absolutely no need to weigh anything, or count the carbs in anything. Nor do we count calories. Just follow the rules (only 10 of them!) and you will be fine.

Low carbing isn't the easiest WOE (way of eating), because our contemporary diet is built around carbs. Just take a look at any high street coffee shop or takeaway - all carb central!

And you may find the first few days tough going, until your body adjusts, but once you're into it, it's a simple plan. It's made that way because I'm a lazy arse who can't be bothered with all that weighing and counting!

3 - Foods that you're not allowed to eat during Bootcamp

Absolutely NONE of the following:

pasta/noodles
rice
bread (in any form - so no wraps, bagels, pittas, naans, chapattis, etc)
barley/oats/quinoa (or other grains)
flour
cake/muffins/brownies/flapjacks
potatoes
other sweet vegetables - especially sweet potatoes/sweetcorn (the clue is in the name!)
pulses/legumes (e.g. peas, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans etc)
balsamic vinegar (it's made differently from other vinegars and is very high in carbs - wine vinegar is fine)

4 - Well what can I eat then?!

We're aiming to switch the ratio of macronutrients from carbs:protein:fat to fat:protein:carbs.

This is a high fat diet. This is something that blows most people's minds when they first start out low carbing. We've been told for the last 30-40 years that fat is bad for us, but this simply isn't true. It's a claim that was initially based on bad science and given further credence by politicians and the media.

Good sources of fat include olive oil, coconut oil, butter, cheese and cream. You will find that not only will your food taste absolutely delicious, but it's also very satiating. You will not be hungry on a low carb diet!

Other things to include in your diet are fattier cuts of meat and fish. Stop seeking out low fat chicken breast with no skin, and embrace the loveliness of roast chicken with lots of gorgeous crispy skin!

Buy mince with a higher fat content. It will have a much better taste than low fat stuff.

Fry your food rather than grill it, etc.

Your carbs on this WOE will come mainly from vegetables and salad. When I post the spreadsheet on Monday morning you'll see on the tabs at the bottom that there's a list of vegetables and their carb counts - if you stick to veg that's around 4g carbs per 100g or less, you'll be fine. Higher carb veg occasionally is OK.

If you've been used to basing your meals around pasta or rice - which lots of us do, especially if you buy a lot of ready meals, you'll have to re-think your approach to meals/cooking.

Here are some examples of meals that I might cook:

•Roast chicken with roasted vegetables• (e.g. shallots, leeks, fennel, courgettes, peppers, cauliflower). Veg roasted in olive oil, and oil or butter on the chicken skin

Marinated salmon fillets with stir-fried vegetables (salmon marinated for c. 20-30 minutes in olive oil, with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, lemon juice and Chinese 5 spice powder); veg could include mange tout, shallots, baby sweetcorn, celery.

... or serve it with egg fried 'rice' made from cauliflower

This is really easy and tastes surprisingly good - trust me! I resisted cauliflower rice for a long time, because I thought it would have too strong a cauliflower taste, but I was wrong.

To make this, separate the florets of a cauliflower, wash them, and then either pulse in a food processor until it's blitzed into small rice-like pieces, or use a box grater (this way is a bit messy, but works well if you don't have a food processor). In a wok or large frying pan, fry this in some light oil or coconut oil. It's all cooked through, which won't take long, push it all to the edges of the pan, and then in the 'hole' in the middle, add a little bit more oil, and then pour in a beaten egg. Let it set a little bit, and then stir it through the cauliflower, so it forms shreds

@prettybird I'm a big OJ fan too and I've completely forgot how much I missed it until you mentioned it

Today:
B: 2 hard boiled eggs, Greek yoghurt
L: fry up (can't believe how many carbs beans have!)
D: Chicken, bacon, mushroom, kale and spinach roast.

... Aaaand a couple of giant dairy milk buttons (sorry Blush I won't touch them starting Monday)

prettybird · 06/10/2017 20:20

Thanks cleareyes - I'll try rooibos with cream then Smile - never thought to, because it feels wrong to have tea with cream. It's ok with coconut oil though!

ClearEyesFullHearts · 06/10/2017 20:20

shush -nobody mention I ate it all-

Oh Gru Grah, Gru, Gru...

Please tell me you're joking? ShockWink

prettybird · 06/10/2017 20:21

My dad is a convert to courgette ribbons as a side dish! Smile

Gammeldragz · 06/10/2017 20:22

moanranger I find cream very easy to overeat! Giving it up for a week coincided with finally losing after a month+ stall.
c4 hilarious! Gave a great night, I bet you look amazing after all that! Also, rather proud at being your name giver ;)

So I've had two snack cheeses, salad of spinach, olives, feta, boiled eggs and caeser dressing.

Came home and nothing I fancy to eat so I'm having red wine... Haven't had a drink for over a month and I'll be BC proper from Monday, so I'm joining c4 for a drink or two ;)

Adorkable · 06/10/2017 20:36

Well, why the f not. I'm in.

cabininthewoods2016 · 06/10/2017 20:51

I'm in. Need to shift this 3st and I know that low carbing is the best way for me. Grin

CarbyDiem · 06/10/2017 21:01

Began with M. Somewhat damp.

twinkledag · 06/10/2017 21:04

MOIST!

Oncewaswho · 06/10/2017 21:05

Cleareyes - I have two family members who detest cauliflower (one of them also hates rice) and three who hate courgettes so there's not much hope. One DC has SNs and a lot of food issues - this is another problem. However I still think I can give it a go.

notevenamum1 · 06/10/2017 21:09

I'm joining too! I did rhe last one with only a small amount of success - about half a stone but could do with losing 2-3 more! Big motivation for me is getting married next April - yay! I wana look and feel my best on the day and not cringe looking at my double chin in the photos.

I have continued low carbing mon - fri since boot camp finished but I am really struggling with breakfasts. I need to eat it at work and we have no kitchen so no option to heat anything up. If I see another boiled egg I am going to vomit. Any ideas?

CarbyDiem · 06/10/2017 21:10

Ssssjhhhhhh. It's a secret. I'm incognito! And an oversharer who has to name change every few months when it's too obvious who I really am.

My boot camp plan is to drink more water and eat vegetables.

BrassicaBabe · 06/10/2017 21:25

I'm v keen to join on Monday. I stated LCHF 10 days ago when I signed up on BIWI's chat thread. (I'm the impatient type) I've dropped from 11.3 to 10.11 in that time!! 😄😄

prettybird · 06/10/2017 21:32

Notevenamum - how about some German-style breakfasts like some ham (or other meat like roast beef/chicken) and cheese.

Lidl does good packs of cooked chicken pieces (various flavours: chili sweet and sour(?), Tikka, BBQ and plain roast), as well as pre-sliced Emmenthal.

Alternatively, how about a a small carton of Greek yoghurt and keep some cinnamon/vanilla paste/cocoa powder (whatever flavouring you like) at work?

....and good luck and congratulations with your wedding next April SmileFlowers. Look through the last Boot Camp for what Jiminy achieved in preparation for her wedding for inspiration (it unfortunately needed to be brought forward unexpectedly - but she'd already made so much progress she could get into her dress).

Veryflummoxed · 06/10/2017 21:57

Thanks Carbydiem began with M somewhat damp.

Veryflummoxed · 06/10/2017 22:07

I second yogurt for breakfast, cold meat and cheese with olives/celery sticks/cucumber, leftovers from the night before is one of my favourites, egg muffins. Sausage and tomato.

Grah0SoontobeaFitty · 06/10/2017 22:41

notevenamum1 or once in a while skip breakfast all together. Have BPC or as my DD and Very does make ahead the egg muffins and microwave. before you leave home, 30 seconds, brush hair, open gob, hot bacon and eggy muffin, munch munch on with coat and out the door.

Clear nope, unfortunately no joking. Had a piece of hot Apple pie and ice-cream Sunday, and vacuumed the rest up during the week, including a large bag of dill pickle flavoured sunflower seeds. But every tempting thing that was sitting in the cupboard for months is gone. No nuts chocolates beans or anything carby all gone. DW not impressed ate all her treats too.

C4 hope you had fun at the Ball.

bellalurgy Glad your doing fine and if the Doctors don't see the possibility of helping to get some clarity to the BMI for ladies of different dimensions, shows how rubbish it is.
Thinking we should refer to the BMI as Bloody Made-up Impression Measurement by Body shamers.

Gammeldagfinderonwheels · 07/10/2017 00:03

C4 is still having fun at the Ball

YoLoNovVitMe · 07/10/2017 00:24

Hey all. It's me Yolo! I have a new name too for this bc. Seemed appropriate and the right time.

MOIST you will still be that in my head. Surely it should be NeCarbyDiem??

Grah you naughty naughty boy! Made me laugh though. Prepare for BIWI and her Miss Whiplash act if you try that on again next week! Grin

C4 you and I both know you had already decided to take one for the team before you even posted options!!! Hope you are having a wonderful time tonight. If anyone deserves a lovely posh night out it is you after the last few weeks of hospital hell. We want pics of the dress, shoes and handbag. And every detail of the evening so we can all live vicariously thru you. Grin Wine

To everyone else, old friends and new faces, I wish you all super success on this boot camp (all within your own power), don't let yourselves down, because you deserve to be the best versions of yourselves that you can be. Healthier, slimmer, happier and fitter. And it is so do-able. I have lost 15 Kgs since last bc started and that's over 2 stones!

And thank you BIWI for the new bc and the last one. You wonderful woman who I have never met but you have literally changed my life for the better. I cannot thank you enough, and everyone on the last bc who supported me and kicked me up the arse when needed, and who shared my journey.

I'll stop now because I sound like a dodgy B movie actress giving an Oscar acceptance speech, when nobody has heard of me! Grin.

I meant every word. I'm not drunk. Just a bit emotional this evening.

HippadoppaloppaGammeldag · 07/10/2017 00:41

However, I am drunk.

Forgive me bootcampers for I have sinned. I have been out with the School Mums and drank 3 Gin & Tonics. I only had Gammeldags for tea as there was no time for chicken. I even ate them walking to the pub.

I had fun.

I will lie in tomorrow and think about what I've done (luckily DH has agreed to swap lie ins with me!)

I will not be drinking again until Christmas.

YOLO. #namastebitches

Gammeldagfinderonwheels · 07/10/2017 01:02

C4 is on her way home, I didn't accidentally buy anything in the auction, I did dance and ate 2 desserts, had shots and don't regret any of it.
My life expectancy at 54 is 15 years.
It's not long enough to be a grandmother or mother,

Welcome to life with respiratory failure.

I have never seen so many fat women acting normal.
I've been hiding away for too long, the world changed when I wasn't looking.

GrumpyOldFucker · 07/10/2017 07:59

I’m in! I may not go the whole distance as I’m only trying to lose 7lb that I put on during various holidays this summer. I can maintain in normal life with 5:2 (which I’ll also be doing) but not lose.

Gammeldragz · 07/10/2017 08:32

Another hangover here. 3 glasses of wine. I fell asleep before I could drink enough water. I am shattered and having a lie in.

Tempted to try making the coconut 'porridge' this morning as it sounds comforting.

ASDismynormality · 07/10/2017 09:06

Another one hung over! Gin was very much needed after a shitty week, the bonus is the dehydrating effect of the lacy has given me a new low on the scales!

Fork2fork · 07/10/2017 09:09

Going to do my food order ready for Monday. Any top tips of food to add on there as a must. With Yogurt is it full fat version? Never tried this before so sorry for the questions

Thanks
