Week 3 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - we move on to Bootcamp Light!

Morning all

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness once more

I hope that the scales reflect the efforts you've made over the last, strict apart from the cheating fortnight.

Now you have a choice. You can either move on to Bootcamp Light, which allows a bit of fruit (berries mainly), for you to include nuts/seeds - again, occasionally, and also a moderate amount of alcohol. Rules for Bootcamp Light are on the spreadsheet, but to make it even easier for you here they are:

1. Eat when you’re hungry - if you’re not hungry, don’t eat

In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you’re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don’t force yourself to eat. But don’t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food

Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs.

You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don’t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat

Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.
Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it – this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more – compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy

"You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn’t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you’ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this – but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day

Even if you’re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product – so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you’re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol

But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you’re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit

"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please – only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information – these are the carb counts:
Rhubarb – 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don’t forget you will need to sweeten this – and not with sugar!)
Blackberries – 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries – 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries – 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds

Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts – BUT – check the back of your packets as I don’t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:
Brazils 3.1g carbs per 100g
Walnuts 3.3g carbs per 100g
Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Hazelnuts 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners

The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us – and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable – occasionally – to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Ended up having asparagus wrapped in streaky bacon for dinner last night, smothered in butter and salt. Absolutely gorgeous! And I tried the Exploded Babybel - cut it into 4 bits and in for about 1.5 mins - was still too long as they burnt inside, but I can definitely see the attraction and will make them again, but cook them for about a minute. Didn't turn out the way I expected, that's for sure!

Today is looking like:
B - just a creamy coffee
L - Chicken and cheese rollups; tomato, cucumber and pepper salad with mayo, Babybel, Skyr yoghurt (though I may have that sooner as I'm feeling a tad hungry)
D - probably last night's plan of mushrooms and leeks in a cheese sauce.

ragz134 · 07/06/2017 09:22

Who was concerned about carbs in the flavoured coffee? It's the other way around, 4cals per gram of carb, so if a teaspoon is 2cals it has 1/2 a gram of carbs. Hope that helps.

I had a terrible food day yesterday, all low carb but no proper meals. I snacked in the library while essay writing for 5 1/2 hours, then came home to a power cut so just had scrambled egg and cheese for dinner.
Food shop today so will stock back up on LC foods for actual meals!

CaptainBraandPants · 07/06/2017 09:24

BIWI that sounds crap. Flowers hope today is a better day.
Nowwhat your breakfast sounds perfect.
Old it will stop, but I know other BC's people have had it lasting 4-6 weeks. Just see it as a sign that you are doing something right.
Shiny well done for trying, it doesn't sound too bad. Pizzawise, I love fathead pizza and always have this when the rest of the family are having Dominos. I don't feel as if I am missing out at all.
Well done Heman, that reminds me I need to go for a run again, haven't been for several weeks since I fell over!
Chester well done, lovely to see the scales move. I have the smooth brussels pate from sainsburys, which is 3.6g/100g. I've looked at Tesco and they do one similar at 3.8g/100g. i think that is low carb enough, isn't it? Or I make my own mackerel pate by whizzing up equal quantities of tinned mackerel and cream cheese.

Food today:
B: black coffee
L: omelette with cheese, bacon and mushrooms and green salad with dressing
D: Think I am going to try ilove's moussaka
S: creamy coffee

HemanOrSheRa · 07/06/2017 09:27

Thanks YoLo. Running may be a slight exaggeration of the speed I go. This has got to be the 4th time I've done C25K Blush. I give up every time I've completed it at the slightest opportunity. This time I am doing it on the treadmill I bought last year. Which has been largely unused. It's set up in the spare room now so no excuses!

I completely understood what you meant yesterday, YoLo, about how just losing some weight from your midriff makes you feel 'normal' rather than the fatty bursting out of your clothes, especially when you are sat down.

Cherrypi · 07/06/2017 09:33

Homemade yoghurt tastes lovely - a bit runny. Will dig out one of my old baby muslins and strain it. Weight on this morning going to try and ignore it and drink more water.

StuntNun · 07/06/2017 10:07

MyShinyThing if you order Dominos for your DS then you can get chicken wings or meatballs and salad for yourself.
Standard chicken wings are 4.9g carbs per 100g.
RedHot wings are 6.8g carbs per 100g.
Caesar salad is 6.2g carbs per 100g.
Meatballs with cheese (Meltin Domi Balls) are 5.5g carbs per 100g.
So not the lowest carb option but not too bad either.

OldBooks and Cooking your hormone levels will come back into balance so KOKO, it won't last for ever.

ilovecherries · 07/06/2017 10:17

Ha! Pulled out my 'smart dress for meetings in hot countries' this morning to iron it, and it is FAR too big. Literally slipping about all over the place. That's not all due to bootcamp, I'd lost 7 lbs Jan-May after stopping drinking at xmas, but I'm pleased. It's a 22.

nekobus · 07/06/2017 10:32

Well done ilove! Great NSV.

Stunt I had no idea dominos did meatballs!

MyShinyThing · 07/06/2017 10:35

Thank you for the pizza tips. Torn between the fat head one & ordering some wings to have with salad now.

Think I will try to pick up stuff to make the fat head & then if I'm feeling really tempted I know I have a better option that I can whizz together.

Captain do you use the pre grated mozzarella for the fat head pizza, I've not had much success with grating the fresh stuff in the past as it's so wet.

styledilemma · 07/06/2017 10:38

Sarraya I'm eating roughly the same amount as you and losing weight. I don't weigh any of the veg.
It's a bit of a worry when everyone else seems to be eating like birds, but I suppose there is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to this.

B - Didn't have any eggs or yoghurt so I took a sirloin steak out of the freezer and cooked it medium/rare with salt and pepper.
It was delicious.
I should run out of eggs more often Smile

Veryflummoxed · 07/06/2017 10:46

Style I don't eat like a bird either. I try to restrict what I dish myself up and pause and think before I go back for seconds but that's as far as it goes. I do not leave food on my plate, I hate the waste though I'm (at this point of time) able to resist the children's leavings. I do not weigh or measure.

styledilemma · 07/06/2017 10:52

I'm at that stage where I'm trying to pre-empt things.

If I'm in a coffee shop and there are cakes and coffee and everyone is having cake and I don't want to draw attention to myself by only having coffee, which is the best cake to choose?
I know they're all loaded with about a week's worth of carbs, but which one would do the 'least' damage?

I'm thinking toasted teacake with butter or a scone with butter and cream (no jam)

styledilemma · 07/06/2017 10:53

Very I want to get to that stage where I feel full.
Maybe today's the turning point. I do feel full after eating the steak this morning.
Maybe I've been eating too many salads? Hmm

GoodBadOrIndifferent · 07/06/2017 10:56

Style would it be do awful to just say you were low carbing? If a friend said something similar I wouldn't think much of it

GoodBadOrIndifferent · 07/06/2017 10:59

Or if its Costa I got a packet of nuts and dried fruit and picked out the fruit and cashews

styledilemma · 07/06/2017 11:01

Have you seen the fun that people make of low carbing?
People don't seem to get the same kind of scorn if they're doing 5:2 or Weightwatchers or Slimming World.
But say you're low carbing and you get the eyeroll. I don't think people take it seriously.
I'd rather keep it between myself (and you lovely lot!)

nekobus · 07/06/2017 11:01

Style some cafes have 70% choc at the till - Starbucks and Nero I think

styledilemma · 07/06/2017 11:02

That's a good idea, get some nuts. I already do that in pubs, I hadn't thought of doing it in Costa.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 07/06/2017 11:02

Does anyone do this as a vegan?

styledilemma · 07/06/2017 11:04

nekobus Yes, I've seen those little cocoa nibs at the counter. That's two options - nuts and chocolate.

If everybody's sat there eating, you sort of want to have something to nibble as well.

styledilemma · 07/06/2017 11:04

AllRoads probably not.

GoodBadOrIndifferent · 07/06/2017 11:08

style i haven't had that. But I can be very thick skinned!

PlymouthMaid1 · 07/06/2017 11:12

Could you not just say that you don't fancy cake or that you are cutting down on sugar ? Today's plan is creamy coffee and a slice of edam, salad, mayo, avocado, quorn curry with either buttered cauli rice or spinach. Scales def moving but only counting Mondays.

HemanOrSheRa · 07/06/2017 11:21

I've not had a problem with other people yet. I can be very thick skinned too Good. I've just said that I'm off carbs as I'm trying to lose some weight . I have had practice though. One of my work colleagues who is a very good friend of mine has a habit of saying 'Ooh your lunch smells nice. Oh. I wouldn't eat that it's got peppers/mushrooms/whatever in'. I just say 'THAT'S OK. I AM NOT OFFERING YOU ANY' Grin.

CaptainBraandPants · 07/06/2017 11:26

I don't volunteer anything and most of the time people don't question why I am not eating/ eating differently. I've eaten the inside of several sandwiches and left the bread at work events and no one turns a hair.
If pressed, I say I am trying not to eat sugar. This seems to be more acceptable to some people than saying I am restricting carbs. But, tbh, I wouldn't eat cake to not rock the boat. It would annoy me and therefore I wouldn't enjoy it
