Week 3 - Pre-summer Low Carb Bootcamp - the choice is yours!

Morning all. Sorry for the later than usual thread, but I'm away at the moment/1

Anyway, here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

As we've now completed the first two, more strict, weeks of Bootcamp you have a choice. You can move on to Bootcamp Light, (rules are on the spreadsheet tabs), which essentially means you can add in a few nuts/seeds, and some fruit (berries, and strictly in moderation), and you can have alcohol occasionally.

However, if you haven't really done Bootcamp strictly enough, or you cheated, or just because you think it's going well, you can stay on Bootcamp. (If you do, though, please make sure your carbs are mainly coming from vegetables and salad, to make sure that you're getting a good balance of nutrition)

Alternatively, you can do Bootcamp during the week but Bootcamp Light at the weekend. The choice is yours.

However, there is one thing I have to warn you about. Weeks 3 and 4 are notorious for little or no weight loss. If this happens to you, please don't panic! Just keep on keeping on and things will start to move again.

After initial big losses in the first couple of weeks, you can't feasibly expect to see that continue, and you should that weight loss settles down at around 1-3lbs a week, depending on how much you have to lose.

Good luck all! Flowers

pisses - good luck with the camping! hope you get great weather

singtome - you can do it! Have your read the idiot proof diet? They recommend a LC woe but also go into the emotional side of eating, you can get a copy quite cheaply on ebay

auntmaggie - my weight goes up and down by a lb or so every day! but by the end of the week, there is usually a downwards trend overall. I also have a friend who is dropping weight at a staggering rate on slimming world - I am trying hard not o be jealous! We are similar weights, started at the same time and she has lost 7lb more than me already. I love this woe though, so I wont be swayed.

chester - I am sorry your job is at risk :( perhaps you could look at this woe as something you can control & work on while the job situation is in so much chaos? be kind to yourself also, stress can hinder weight loss.

My local shop sells 2 litres of water for 19p, and tastes a lot better than my tap water! I buy 2 every morning on the school run and try to have them finished by 7pm.

readyforno2 · 02/06/2016 11:00

Tits I have a litre bottle that goes everywhere with me. I drink one before I leave the house in the morning and count two. After that I don't bother

stilllovingmysleep · 02/06/2016 11:24

Sorry to hear that so many of you are struggling.

I think it's because it's the third week of BC & the initial enthusiasm naturally wanes off.... but hang in there. Soon, seeing good results weight-wise will spur you on and there's always a plateau at this stage anyway.

SingToMeInFrench · 02/06/2016 11:32

Thanks Wan! I am very much an emotional eater- my mother struggled with eating disorders for as long as I can remember. I definitely use food as an emotional prop.

CathemeralChild · 02/06/2016 12:43

SingToMe do you like chilli? I'm an emotional too but find that chilli hits the spot. So a couple of chilli gherkins, a jalapeño stuffed with creme fraiche, green olives with oil and chilli powder, I find it all very satisfying and fits this WOE.

CathemeralChild · 02/06/2016 12:46

Please fill free to fill in all the missing words from the above post. 😂
I was multitasking and admiring DC's latest Minecraft puppy.

CiderwithBuda · 02/06/2016 12:47

Hi all.

Didn't get much time to post yesterday.

Food - B - can't remember!

L - salad with chicken, half avocado, cherry toms, mayo dressing
D - hosted Book Club - Prosecco
IPD mousakka, Greek salad
Small slice of apple pie with cream

The mousakka England down very well and I need to send the recipe to one person. It was tasty. A friend brought the apple pie but I only had a very small slice. Enjoyed it. Drank a few glasses of Prosecco but then the fizziness didn't agree with me so stopped. Should have drunk more water yesterday - only had about 1.5 l.

Back on track today. Had some strawberries and cream for breakfast. No idea what to have for lunch. Might just have scrambled eggs. Not overly hungry.

Weight is a bit static. Hoping for any loss this week.

Gcalgske · 02/06/2016 12:55

Titsalinabumsquash UHT cream is just heat treated cream, if you can get double cream in little portions that's great but I've never seen them (even online) the UHT should be refrigerated after opening but will keep ok in a cool bag or thermos. Could someone bring you a refill when they visit? Get a couple of small flasks and they take one home, wash/fill and bring it back the next day?
Tiny pots of 'Half' cream or single is more readily available but some have additives and single is obvs higher carb.
Could you take a jar of coconut oil and butter with a milk frother?

Gcalgske · 02/06/2016 13:03

Flowers NotdeadyetBOING
Thanks, yesterday was a tough day. But I got through it- although husband was a tit at bedtime and really pissed me off but I didn't get up and have a large gin (although I really wanted too)

Wine chester what a crazy situation. Hope it gets resolved soon.

Flowers for those who are struggling at the moment and trying to stay on track...
Another emotional eater here (my Mum use to have a big biscuit tin full of penguins, kit Kats, wagon wheels etc (late 70s type snacks) and if she'd had a bad day at work or I was fed up at school, we'd forage....)
Glad you stayed away from that toblerone reader77 - that wd test my willpower for sure despite not actually craving sugar at the moment...
Off to sunny Spain for 3 days so will do my best to stay low carbing.
Have just had a massive breakfast/lunch of mushrooms fried in butter, 4 rashers of bacon and an omelette to keep me going until this eve - absolutely stuffed. Hoping for a pret at the airport so I can get a salad or something for the plane...
Anyone tried making fat bombs yet?
Googling low carb recipes on line this am and came across some amazing coconut butter/dark chocolate fat bombs, plus low carb peanut fudge. Some had stevia in though, so poss just for maintenance but I shall do more research!

BIWI · 02/06/2016 13:44

reader

B- creamy coffee
L- some almonds
D- fried halloumi, a steak and some cucumber
Hardly any water. Crap day and there is a giant toblerone looking at me

What the bloody hell do you think you're doing?! You're hardly eating anything. Where's your veg? Why aren't you eating a proper lunch? And why no water?

No wonder you're being tempted by the Toblerone.

Please. Eat properly - and drink your water!

Kummerspeck if you're still finding yourself hungry you need to check:

  • am I eating enough?
  • am I eating enough fat?
  • am I drinking enough water?

But the general rule of thumb is to eat! As long as it's low carb, obviously Grin

Yay reader!

BIWI · 02/06/2016 13:49

lisbapalea

Did a sneaky weigh in this morning and I haven't lost a bean since Monday despite sticking to the plan.
I do know I haven't been drinking enough though

Well, that means you're not actually sticking to the plan, doesn't it?!

And don't forget, we're in the infamous week 3, where weight loss does slow/stop

KOKO - but keep on following the rules - and it will be fine

BIWI · 02/06/2016 13:52

I've noticed that there's a lot of cheating going on. 'Just a small piece' of cake or pie or chocolate is not in the rules! Given that you already know that weeks 3 and 4 are likely to be weeks where you don't see much/any loss, it's really counter-productive to cheat

saffynool · 02/06/2016 14:12

B: cup of tea
S: coffee with cream and coconut oil, small pack of pork scratchings
L: spinach salad with tuna, two hard boiled eggs and mustard mayo, plus a good slosh of posh lemon-flavoured olive oil
D: will be chicken breast, possibly with chorizo, or maybe with a cream and bacon sauce, plus roasted broccoli and leeks fried in butter. I think I'm probably gonna go for the chorizo though as am feeling a bit creamed-out.

Might have some Turkish yoghurt and blueberries with cinnamon afterwards, or a couple of squares of dark choc.

Am stuffed atm though!

Interesting reading the 'what did you eat today?' thread in chat...a few people whose daily diets made me Shock but I expect most of them would say the same about mine!

LaserShark · 02/06/2016 14:13

48hrs post surgery now and feel much more on track. Reducing the painkillers because they were making me feel really woozy and discombobulated. So far today, I've had Greek yoghurt with cinnamon for breakfast and a really nice salad of bacon, feta, avocado, hm Mayo and, well, salad obvs. Planning smoked mackerel with buttered leeks, green beans and broccoli for dinner.

Keeping up the water is trickier because getting up and downstairs to the bathroom is soooo difficult but I'm managing 2l, should be 3+ though.

I was on bootcamp threads I think four years ago but came off them when there started to be a heavy slant towards fasting- people kept posting about going longer and longer without food and doing serious exercise but not needing to eat and it bothered me a lot. My appetite is certainly reduced on low carb and I don't need to snack or eat immediately on waking like I used to, but I always find I need three meals a day. Even at the moment when I'm completely sedentary! I get alarmed by the very thought of fasting Grin Does anyone else find this, or is it just me who still needs breakfast, lunch and dinner?

I'm also finding the spreadsheet really hard to read on my phone so I think I've been going a bit wrong with veg - have been cooking with onions for example.

CiderwithBuda · 02/06/2016 14:18

Blush. Sorry Biwi. Will try harder Biwi. Not only have I let you down. Not only have I let the team down. I have let myself down. Sad

I'm right back on it today. And unlike previous bootcamps that was the first alcohol I had had and the first cheat. I would normally have not even tried to cater for Bootcamp and thrown in the towel completely for the evening. Having said that I don't actually know why I had the apple pie when the strawberries were sitting looking at me! Hmm However it was a very small piece with lots of cream.

saffynool · 02/06/2016 14:23

I think the fasting issue is a really interesting one. I tend not to eat breakfast, so will quite often 'fast' from say 9pm (after dinner) to 1pm the next day (will have a cup of tea and some water in that time) if, say, I'm busy at work. So that would be technically a 16-hour fast. But, I would always eat when I'm hungry - and I rarely go 16 hours without solid food if I'm just knocking about at home as I am still a cupboard-raider when I get bored.

I would argue that it's very unlikely that - as a species - we 'need' three meals a day. That just makes no sense from an evolutionary PoV. But if you want three meals a day, and you're happy with your weight, and you're healthy, I don't see it as a problem. Fasting is definitely not for everyone - do what feels right, I say. Hope you're feeling even better soon btw Flowers

lisbapalea · 02/06/2016 14:32

Sorry biwi - I hang my head in shame... I think I am on 2litres of water today so far so will guzzle another 1litre and then feel confident that I really am on plan, promise!

LaserShark · 02/06/2016 14:40

Yes, saffy, I don't need three meals as such - I wouldn't pass out without them! It's more that if I skip breakfast I'm likely to start picking at food from 11ish onwards and end up eating more or making poorer choices. When busy at work, I definitely go longer without even thinking of food but being at home sees me drifting fridge-wards more frequently.

I just like low-carbing because it's the opposite end of the spectrum from the deprivation and hunger of low-fat calorie restriction. I do eat less food when I'm low carbing because I want less food. But a few years back, I found there was a sense of competitive under-eating on a bc thread that made me really anxious. I think it was just people surprised at the appetite reduction you get when low carbing but it reminds me of previous eating disorder issues so I have to stay away from that kind of conversation. I love reading about other people's meals though!

WanHeda · 02/06/2016 14:42

Laser - I started not being hungry in the mornings, and did skip breakfast a couple of times but then I would find I was extra hungry the next day, so I don't think fasting is for me. I still enjoy my 3 meals a day!

FaithAscending · 02/06/2016 14:45

Intersting that you mention fasting Laser. I've had a look at Michael Mosley's Blood sugar diet which is essentially HFLC but it's also 5:2. The reason I love HFLC is because for the first time in forever since my Mum put me on a diet at 9 I can just eat til I'm full without obsessively counting calories/points etc or feeling hungry. The idea of fasting goes against the grain really. Like you, I don't feel as hungry now but I like the freedom to eat without guilt if I am hungry!

saffynool · 02/06/2016 14:49

Yeah, I agree laser - the problem with any sort of diet discussion is that there will always be some who treat it as a competition, or use it as a cover for underlying eating issues (not on this thread of course! Grin)

I sometimes lurk on some of the more American-based LCHF forums and there is some weird stuff on there. Long term egg fasts, 'potato hacks', people who absolutely freak if you so much as mention the possibility of taking your carb level above 20g/day...people who refuse to eat veg at all and exist on buffalo they've killed and butchered themselves...people who record the exact micronutrient profile of everything they put in their mouth... there are some fucked-up relationships to food out there.
