Well done Sheba Thanks Now if I could just give myself a talking to Wink

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/03/2016 11:37

Ahhh. Thought I'd do a google search and it's still being perpetuated that carbs don't make you fat.
Yes they do. Excess carbohydrate is turned into fat in the bod, once the glycogen stores are full and the muscles and brain have used all the glucose they need. Hey ho. Someone needs to mythbust the mythbusters!

StuntNun · 05/03/2016 12:02

I'm no fan of Ancel Keys either but in his defense:
(1) He was trying to reduce the rate of heart disease and he firmly believed that saturated fat was a root cause. Yes he was wrong but he thought it was most important to get people to change their diets because it would take years to get the evidence required. When the evidence did emerge it was too late and the 'saturated fat causes heart disease' idea was so entrenched that there was no going back.
(2) Ancel Keys never said we should be eating loads of sugar instead of fat. He didn't think sugar was bad per se but that was back when the average American diet was reasonably low in fat anyway. It was the food industry that decided to start putting sugar and, later, high fructose corn syrup into absolutely every food imaginable. It's utterly shocking how many savoury foods contain sugar. Why would you need to put sugar into bolognese or curry? But modern foods are laden with sugar.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/03/2016 12:46

I didn't say he did say we should eat loads of sugar at all - just that he was one of the folk who jumped on the "let's all trash Prof Yudkin's ideas on how bad sugar is for us" bandwagon. Or perhaps you weren't answering my point but another one from somewhere else?

feekerry · 05/03/2016 12:49

So started on the 1st of Jan so 8 weeks in total and have lost about a stone. Sts for about 4 weeks of that and lost the rest of the weeks!

StuntNun · 05/03/2016 14:24

Just adding info on Keys Thumbwitch since he is widely regarded as 'the guy that got it all wrong'. He was a complete arsewipe to Yudkin though which probably did set us all back a couple of decades. Yudkin's book is remarkable, especially with regard to his ideas about sugar's role in disease. He had a reasonable idea about the evils of sugar back in the 70s and he was widely ridiculed. Now it seems that he was right about everything.

BetsyM00 · 05/03/2016 15:42

I knew I'd heard the name Ancel Keys somewhere before - he was mentioned in 'The Great Cholesterol Con' by a Scottish doctor Malcolm Kendrick. A book well worth reading.

I feel really into the groove of BC now. I've lost 24 lbs since 11th Jan. Still a ways to go, but it feels completely do-able now.

BIWI · 05/03/2016 17:40

That's impressive Betsy!

shouldiblowthewhistle · 05/03/2016 18:04

Impressed with fee's and Betsy's losses. Not to mention knowledge about nutritional history on this thread.

I'm weighing myself every day. I'm resolutely the same. It seems my weight fluctuates less now than it used to (except for the evenings when I'm about 4 pounds heavier). I used to go up and down by a kilo during the day but not any more!

BTW what's the deal with cloud bread?! Does anyone like it? I made some this morning and they look great. BUT they taste eggy and have the texture of tissue. I'm going to fry them up as french toast tomorrow but I don't think I'll go back there again.

B: 1.5 pieces of cloud bread, fried in butter
L: 3 eggs and some smoked salmon, with half a small red onion. Scrambled with butter.
2 cups of rooibos tea (black)
D: Not sure yet. Possibly cold roast chicken, fried bacon with lettuce and loads of olive oil/tiny bit of red wine vinegar. Maybe a bit of broccoli with cheese sauce, not sure yet. Maybe I'll make fathead pizza.

Not very hungry today. Also am brewing a cold.

BetsyM00 · 05/03/2016 18:26

Works out at 6kg lost in the first 2 weeks of this diet; 5kg over the last 6 weeks!

I tried the cloud bread/oopsie rolls with burgers but wasn't too keen - as you say shouldi, it's a bit eggy. But I like it spread with butter alongside a bowl of soup.

shouldiblowthewhistle · 05/03/2016 18:29

I might give that a try. Planning on making a curried cauliflower soup if I could be arsed

feekerry · 05/03/2016 19:54

Ye BetsyM00 I kinda went the same way. 7lbs ish lost in first 2 weeks then 7lbs lost over last 6 weeks.
I haven't been very adventuras tho. As nice as the recipes look I haven't made any of them really as I don't have the time/inclination so have just stuck to the basics most of the time.
Need to get more organised and try some of the recipes but with 2 pre school kids and work etc the basics work well!!

LexLoofah · 05/03/2016 20:18

Oops didn't mean to start trouble betwitx us lot on Dr Keys, he is not the only one to blame but his name does crop up a lot, thumb you could be our trailblazing myth buster, start a sort of wiki leaks expose on carbs

b - cold sausage, cuppy egg
L - Brie, olives, crackling, avocado
D - out, had fatty ribeye steak, broccoli, warptercress, Cavalo Nero with pancetta, dark choc from handbag stash and a cup of tea

Again not enough veg, running low, one more day until shop day

BIWI · 05/03/2016 21:23

shouldi there's no point weighing yourself during the day! Your weight is bound to go up, as all you're doing is weighing the food and drink that you've been consuming.

OP posts:
shouldiblowthewhistle · 05/03/2016 21:31

BIWI I know but I'm just curious! I used to fluctuate much more wildly. I do weigh myself every morning after a flush and it's exactly the same every day. That's the one I pay attention to.

AF due Tuesday so fingers crossed there's a whoosh.

Dinner was fathead pizza. 4L of water so far and I think I'll have another pint before bed I live life on the edge I do

where is everyone today? hope you are all off having a lovely mothers day

B - bacon, cheesy scr eggs, mushrooms
L - picked at olives, cheese spread with butter, crackling, cucumber
D - will be pork tenderloin wrapped in parma ham, swede mashed with butter, spinach in butter

very peckish today, also had: macadamia nuts, dark choc, spoon of greek yog, extra cup of tea with skim milk (at DMILs) - it was all I could do to resist the biscuits, clearly should have had more for lunch

ShebaQueen · 06/03/2016 19:08

Hello Lex, I'm here, had a lovely Mother's day, went out for brunch which was great - so many LC options Smile

Roast chicken for dinner, just off to see what veg I have to go with it. Away with work again tomorrow and Tuesday so am planning to raid M&S foodhall in the morning to get some supplies. Will weigh first thing and then update the spreadsheet once I get to the hotel in the evening.

shouldiblowthewhistle · 06/03/2016 19:15

Evening - I'm here too Smile

B: 3 scrambled eggs and 2 slices bacon
L: Pork belly

Afternoon tea: glass of champagne (friend's baby shower). I avoided the super carby high tea.
Also had 2 coffees with double cream this morning.

Dinner: Probably some veggies but not at all hungry.

2L water today so will drink a few pints of sparkling water tonight.

BIWI · 06/03/2016 22:57

Evening all.

I'm all over the place at the moment - sometimes good, sometimes awful.

As well as my FIL dying, my dad has now been taken back into hospital and is really not well. I'm Oop North with my DB and SIL (am working here tomorrow anyway), and have been taken out for a curry. The best I can say is that I didn't eat any rice!

Tomorrow will be day at a client workshop where I have no control over the food, so goodness only knows what there will be to eat.

As my brother says, with irritating frequency, 'it is what it is'. I did at least get to see my trainer twice this weekend.

Oh BIWI. You are having a tough time lately. I sincerely hope your dad gets well enough to leave hospital soon.

Thinking of you x

Week 8 chat thread is here

OP posts:
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/03/2016 12:28

I'll put this here as I don't know if you're taking it over to the next thread - so sorry that your Dad isn't well either, BIWI, that must be really hard for you at the moment. How is everyone doing without FIL?

Un-MNy (((hugs))) for you - hope things start to get better for you very soon x

BIWI · 07/03/2016 22:22

Thanks Thumb. It's a bit tough - DH has been handling things well so far, but had a bit of a 'moment' last night. Not great timing as I was up with my family and not with him.
