Post here any questions (or concerns) you may have here. The main chat thread often moves very quickly in the first few weeks, so specific questions can get missed!

I have a pack of cabbage and Leeks which are shredded can be used to stir fry or boil. I was fancying this with three rashes of bacon we have left over.
Dos this seem a suitable dinner,

FelicityFunknickle · 19/01/2016 20:35

Ooh, similar. I just bought a giant bag of kale.
Please dont tell me I cannot have this on bc. Grin

BIWI · 19/01/2016 20:50

Stir fry or saute in plenty of butter momofgirls and that will be a lovely dinner!

Felicity - kale is fine!

Hi
Had a bit of a 'funny moment' yesterday morning. Felt mildly dizzy, mildly nauseous and had mild pins and needles in my hands. I had eaten breakfast. Lasted about 10mins (during which I was quietly panicking about having a stroke ) and then was fine for the rest of the day.
Is this anything to do with low carbing?
Thanks

Does anyone have a recipe for cauliflower cheese obviously without the flour?

ChesterDrawers · 20/01/2016 10:54

Nate, no idea if it's linked to LC or not, I've never experienced anything like that. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will be along shortly.

Hammer, my cauli cheese recipe is basically a big old slug of double cream heated with seasoning, a good handful of mature cheddar and some full fat cream cheese (garlic roule is lovely). Pour sauce over cooked cauli and bung in the oven for 15 mins til bubbly and brown.

Could use blue cheese or anything else really. It's so good, I don't know why people insist on faffing around with flour.

HammerToFall · 20/01/2016 11:01

Thanks Chester. I'm going to try that with my steak tonight Smile

ChesterDrawers · 20/01/2016 12:04

I sneakily made it on Christmas Day and even my WW loving MIL commented on how lovely it was. Works great with leeks too, oh, and a spoon Grin

mustbemad71 · 20/01/2016 13:20

How will we know when we are fat- adapted please? I think I've read that it can take a few weeks, is that right? Thanks

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 20/01/2016 13:27

Any ideas what I can use for a sauce in a prawn stir fry please? ??? Normally use blue dragon sweet chilli.

BIWI · 20/01/2016 13:53

WhoTheFuckIsSimon - you'll never replace the sweetness of sweet chilli sauce, I'm afraid!

But this is what I do:

  • first, melt a large spoonful of coconut oil in your wok
  • start off by frying sliced shallots, with finely chopped ginger, garlic and chilli
  • when really hot, add your veg (gradually, so that they're frying rather than steaming
  • add your prawns for the last minute or so, and when they're cooked, add some light soy sauce and, if you like, a little bit of rice wine or rice vinegar; lime juice makes another good addition

mustbemad it takes 2-4 or so weeks; This explains it well

You'll find that you're not hungry between meals any more, and you should feel much more energetic and clear-headed

Thanks BIWI Smile

Nateismine after only two days of low carbing it's doubtful that it was really caused by this WOE - however, what have you been eating? List out for me your menus on Monday and Tuesday - and how do they compare with what you would normally be eating?

And very importantly, how much salt do you eat? It's really important to make sure that you get plenty of sodium, especially if you're drinking lots of water.

What can I use instead of stock in stews/casseroles and the like? I cooked a kind of Moroccan lamb yesterday with loads of spices but obviously I didn't use tomatoes. I added water instead of stock but it was a bit, how can I put it, bland. Any suggestions please? Thank you.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 20/01/2016 16:54

Bovril and marmite are okay (i just had a cup of marmite, i am slightly addicted!)

BIWI · 20/01/2016 17:41

Make sure that you season it well, and use herbs and spices too.

And if there's a lot of liquid, then drain it out and then in another saucepan boil it to reduce it a bit, which will concentrate the flavour.

I never use stock cubes in stews or casseroles, and they taste just fine!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 20/01/2016 18:18

Thanks Biwi. I made the stir fry as you suggested and it was nice.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 20/01/2016 18:23

That article is very interesting. Ive been peeing loads today and yesterday, wonder if that's why? I do have terrible bladder problems though so I might just be having a bladder flare but normally when I have a flare I have pain which I don't currently have.

Will pee on a dipstick at work tomorrow and see if I have ketones yet.

alicewhatsthematter · 20/01/2016 19:03

is it worth me buying some keto dipsticks do you think?

HammerToFall · 20/01/2016 19:26

How much is a gin and slimline tonic going to hinder me? Had the day from hell, mil been rushed j to hospital seriously ill and dh working away on the other side of the world. Could really do with a drink GrinGrinGrinGrin

BIWI · 20/01/2016 19:34

Who and alice Don't waste your money on the ketostix - if you're drinking the amount of water that you should be, you'll be washing all the ketones out of your system anyway, so they won't show anything other than a pale pink.

Hammer sorry you've had such a bad day, and hope MIL is OK. Whilst I wouldn't blame you, at all, a gin and slimline will not really help you.

First, the slimline has artificial sweeteners in it, and there is some suggestion that our bodies can react to these like sugar - i.e. they can provoke an insulin response in the same way, thus encouraging fat.

Second, alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body, and so whilst your'e drinking alcohol, you body will choose to burn this instead of any fat.

So not a good idea really - but your decision to make ... Grin

Thanks for the advice re stews. I love marmite so that's a good option. As is reducing the liquid more.
It's just a case of knowing a few tricks to work round things you've always done/used.
