I'd like to have a go. I've never done this WOE before or done it via a thread, so not sure how that works?
I've low-carbed before (great results) but that was low-carb high protein.
Am breast feeding so will do boot camp light as per the advice - will I still be able to follow along or is there a separate thread?
Excited! Limbers up!
Am already exercising and cutting back evening carbs/ alcohol and trying to up water in prep.

BIWI · 24/09/2014 14:53

Of course you can follow along, yongnian!

How it works is like this:

On Monday I will start the Week 1 thread - I start a new one each week - where we can chat about how we're doing, what we're eating, how we're finding it, etc. In my opening post I will also link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, which the very lovely SayraT sets up and runs - you enter your starting weight and then your weight every Monday after that until the end of the 10 weeks. If you don't want to put your actual weight in you can index it - i.e. you start at 100 and for every pound you lose (or gain!) you lose (or gain) a point. So if at the end of the first week you've lost 4 pounds, your starting weight for Week 2 is 96.

If you don't want to go on the spreadsheet at all, you don't have to, because as well as the spreadsheet, MNHQ create a weight tracker for us, which is an individual thing, so you can plot your progress. This is private to you and you don't have to share it.

I will post a link to the Weight Tracker on Monday morning as well.

From experience, I know that the first couple of weeks of Bootcamp are very, very busy on the chat threads, so as well as these, I also start a questions thread, so if you have any specific questions this is the place to ask them. We also have a Bootcamp recipe thread that I have linked to before, but will also link to on Monday, so that you have all information to hand.

And that's it!

Wow! It sounds great!! Really like the group/support element as well. Will start browsing through the stuff to plan what I might be eating. Breakfast is hard one for me with with low carbs - am a dyed-in-the-wool hardcore toast eater!!
What kind of weight loss do people typically find? I am overweight but am also very muscular underneath so weigh heavy. If I could lose a stone in 10 weeks I'd be thrilled - is that do-able? Exercising alongside as that's always been my preferred method but just isn't enough by itself any more.

YoureMyWifeNowDave · 24/09/2014 15:14

Hmmm maybe going to lidl and buying half my bodyweight in pastries to eat before Monday wasn't such a good idea then!

Does paracetamol work on carb flu?

BIWI · 24/09/2014 15:18

Weight loss is obviously impossible to predict Grin

However, losing a stone in 10 weeks isn't impossible (we have had one or two people who have lost that in the first week!).

What is most likely to happen is that in weeks 1 and 2 you may see quite significant weight loss (this obviously depends on how much you have to lose and how strict you are), but then in weeks 3 and 4 the loss will slow/stop. This is very, very common, and it's to do with your body adjusting to the WOE. After that, it will resume, but at a slower rate of 1-2lbs per week. Which is good - slow and steady weight loss is much better for you and easier to sustain in the longer term.

BreakingBod · 24/09/2014 15:45

Thanks BIWI I'll deffo hang around as even just giving up sugar for me will be a major event. I'm also going to aim for 3 good, lower carb meals a day, but will allow myself fruit etc if I'm really struggling (which I expect I will to start with).

BetterTogether · 24/09/2014 16:04

Can I join please? I'm on my phone so if someone could add me to the list that'd be great, thanks.

I joined Bootcamp once before but - despite loving the food and losing weight on the plan - life got too busy & I dropped out after a few weeks, and have been putting weight on ever since Blush

Life is still horrendously busy, but I need to take care of myself as well as everyone else, so I am going to try much harder to stick to it this time. I know eating this way makes me feel better, just need to stop myself from reaching for the easy carbs when I'm exhausted!

StuntNun · 24/09/2014 16:30

Trust me Non, dietary fat is not the enemy. This way of eating gets your body viewing fat as its primary source fuel. It is actually very difficult to eat too much fat. I have had days where over 75% of my calories have come from fat, a good proportion of that was saturated fat, and still seen the scales drop the next day. If you are a stone or more overweight then you will naturally eat a bit less fat than if you are at or near your ideal weight. When people are near their goal weight they often find that weight loss slows unless they actually increase their fat intake. That's why a lot of long-term low carbers replace their breakfasts with bulletproof coffee (black coffee with a tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of coconut oil blended in) as an easy way to get more fat into their day. In terms of eating too much, this is much less of a problem compared to a conventional low calorie diet. Because the foods you are eating are highly satiating you will feel full and stay satisfied for longer after each meal. It's very important not to get too hungry on this way of eating - when you're hungry, eat! We have had people on previous Bootcamps that don't lose weight because they aren't eating enough and their bodies desperately hold on to their fat stores. Eating too many calories only becomes a problem when you are near to goal but that's because it's more difficult to encourage the body to shift those last few pounds and quite often people are still eating the portion sizes appropriate to before they lost weight. For example when I was 2.5 stone heavier last year I would have had three sausages for dinner; now I really only need two but habit had me dishing up three every time. Calories are not something you need to worry about: just follow the rules and especially make sure you are drinking the required amount of water.

Yongian I started Bootcamp Light while pregnant and found it great for losing weight without affecting my milk supply. If your baby is still feeding at night then make sure you have low carb snacks on your bedside table as you will probably need something to eat before you get up for the first few days while your body adjusts. I personally lost 18.5 lb in the first ten weeks of going low carb but your mileage may vary. Wink I was still losing the baby weight as I started when my baby was eight months old so that may have speeded things up for me. In total I lost 30 lb over five months to reach my target weight of 9.5 stone and ten months later I'm still at that weight. So this way of eating definitely worked for me. Smile

AstoriaMalfoy · 24/09/2014 17:37

I'm in . Been low carbing on and off all year but not very strictly . I've dodo eaten far too much processed meat . This is the kick up the bum I need .

By the way can someone add me as I can't work out how to copy on phone ! Smile

so in terms of fat, what is the proportion of your food that should be fat and carb (i.e. salad/green veggies rather than rice/pasta)? I think that I eat too much protein and want to cut this down.

I usually have a dollop of mayo plus butter on my veg - is this enough fat in a meal? Often I have avocado with salad which presumably is good because its a good fat? Does that sound like enough fat?

I'm not good on the recipes, so am likely to stick with Pret stuff for lunch and chicken/mince/steak plus veg or salad for dinner. I'll have to pick up an egg from Pret for breakfast as I don't eat this during the week.

Does anyone have a link to a bullet proof coffee recipe also? MAybe that can be my breakfast.

BIWI · 24/09/2014 17:57

Be careful if you're just relying on Pret, as the fat is unlikely to be sufficient (given that the whole world wants to make things low fat!)

You should be eating food in these proportions: fat:protein:carbs

So look for fattier cuts of meat - if you're having chicken, have roast chicken roasted with butter/oil and eat the skin, or go for chicken thighs rather than the breast meat. Belly pork rather than pork fillet, breast of lamb rather than neck, etc etc.

Depends what you mean by a dollop as to whether or not that's enough! But a good tablespoon, and lots of butter, plus oily dressings on your salads, etc

Thanks biwi and stuntnun (love that name!). Similar place to you then stuntnun, baby is nearly 7 mths and have baby weight to lose.
Eek! Excited.

StuntNun · 24/09/2014 18:32

Bulletproof coffee recipe for Beattie. You need a blender or a stick blender or one of those milk frother gadgets. Make a mug of black coffee - decaf or instant can also be used depending on your preferences but I like to use a three-cup cafetiere. Blend the coffee with one tbsp/15g of butter and one tbsp/15g of coconut oil until frothy. It tastes like a coconut latte. Be warned that it is a lot of fat to take in one go and it is best to start with a teaspoon of each of butter and coconut oil and work your way up or it can leave you feeling queasy.

An alternative is a teaspoon of coconut oil in rooibos or green tea, just remember to stir before every sip.

DiscoDancer · 24/09/2014 22:42

Does anybody have any suggestions of foods to stock up on? I remember eating loads of babybel last time in the first few days. And boiled eggs. Anything else that is easy to grab and eat? Have two kids so hard to make food properly solely for myself...

StuntNun · 25/09/2014 06:58

Pork scratchings (I buy these ones), Babybels come in different flavours now, cream cheese and celery, Peperamis, hard boiled eggs, olives, almonds or macademias (Bootcamp light only), 70% or higher chocolate (Bootcamp light only), cook extra chicken drumsticks and leave them in the fridge. Mine and DH's favourite low carb treats in the evening are chicken wings or spare ribs but check the carb count as some have sugary coatings. Or make your own using Mark's Daily Apple homemade barbecue sauce recipe.

BIWI · 25/09/2014 07:16

I always make sure I have eggs (usually always a couple of hard boiled ones in the fridge), and if I'm really hungry I'll grab a piece of cheddar. Always have that in the fridge too. I like extra mature/vintage cheddar, as it has a really sharp bite/tang, which means I don't need to eat that much to satisfy the immediate urge.

Can I have a bit of advice regrading my coffee consumption. Can happily chug the required water, but if need the coffee. What is the advice regarding cream in coffee? How many coffees a day? Flat whites? I know about bullet proof coffee but haven't got all the equipment for that.
God I am desperate coffee addict. I have no other vices (anymore).

StuntNun · 25/09/2014 08:05

Tenement I use a milk frother to make bulletproof coffee. Cream is better than milk for coffee as it's lower in carbs. Some people on the last Bootcamp were using coconut cream but I don't know how well that works in coffee.

SayraT · 25/09/2014 08:29

Others things that I make sure I have the first couple of weeks include:

Cheese (I have been buying the little, very expensive, packs of different cheeses for some variety)
Smoked salmon
Bacon (I know we are trying to avoid processed food but when I started I found the first weeks quite difficult and thought I was better eating bacon than giving up. I cooked it until crispy then kept it in a box and ate it cold)
Eggs
Cucumber
Kale and aubergine to make 'crisps'
Almond/cashew butter (a teaspoon can feel very indulgent)
FF yogurt
Coconut cream

For anyone just starting out and worrying about eating fat/more calories then don't. I started with BIWI in January and in the first 10 week BC I lost 17lbs, then I maintained that weight for about 6 weeks before the May BC when I lost a further 5lbs. Since then with the 5 week BC I've lost more weight bringing my total weight loss this so far this year to 28lbs (2 stone). I eat plenty of fat (butter, coconut oil, mayonnaise etc etc) and use fatty cuts of meat. It can feel quite strange at first but it does work Grin

I also just checked my body fat %age on the scales (I know these are not completely accurate) and it has gone from 47% in January to 44% now. I am happy to see that this is going down, the 3% body fat loss equates to 17lbs Smile

Pisseslikeahorse · 25/09/2014 08:35

Tenementfunster - I drink about 4 cups a day (black), as well as the water and hasn't had any detrimental effect on me so so far Smile
Bullette proof can be done with a fork you just don't get the big froth so looks a little greasy but it tastes ok.
