Next Bootcamp is going to be a slightly different one from the norm.

It's only going to be for 5 weeks, but it's going to be stricter than the others.

The plan is that the first week will be Ubercamp, which is a no dairy version of Bootcamp; weeks 2 and 3 will be Bootcamp and then weeks 4 and 5 will be Bootcamp Light.

If you just want to Bootcamp (rather than Ubercamp) you're still more than welcome to join!

Anyway, if you want to join in, sign up here.

Add your name to the list, and cut & paste it into a new post.

These things always start when I'm away so I'm playing catch-up for the rest of it. I am away next week but will join in when back

trashcanjunkie · 19/07/2014 03:26

Ooh I hadn't realised we were off on Monday. I have a recipe for a frappucino dairy free coffee if anyone's interested....

Make your black coffee, let it cool and then pour it into a blender. Add ice and a good blob off coconut cream and whizz it up. It's bloody marvelous.

Oh and stock up on mayonnaise.... It has been fooling me when I've eaten chilli or bolognese into thinking I'm adding sour cream.

bettybigballs · 19/07/2014 08:49

I'm in for this too, have packed on a few lbs since the earlier bootcamp and new some discipline in my life again. Sorry to be a pain, could someone add me to the sheet? My phone's being an anti-bootcamp arse.

Good size ocado order arriving today filled with butter, meat and veg. The garden's also providing regular courgettes and marrows!

perrysands · 19/07/2014 09:45

I started low carbing on the January 2013 Bootcamp and have been pretty happy maintaining since. However, holidays, nights out and the attitude of 'oh, a few crisps can't hurt' have changed my shape.

I haven't been on the scales in months. I'm in for a shock on Monday morning I reckon.

I have a wedding in two weeks so at least I have incentive to be strict with myself. I am looking forward to being free of carb creep. Smile

Yama · 19/07/2014 09:56

Perrysands - I don't know what an egg fast is but a Bulletproof coffee is coffee with a slug on butter in it. Apparently it's very nice.

I may give it a go on Monday.

Perrysands sorry for derailing the thread with egg fast chat. An egg fast is a currently trendy fad for people trying to break a stall. Sometimes when dieting, especially when you're close to your ideal weight, then you stop losing weight for a few weeks or more. An egg fast is used by people on a low carb high fat (LCHF) way of eating (WOE) such as this one to break a stall. I'm only 4.5 lb from my target weight so I have to work a bit harder now than I did when I was more than two stone overweight.

A bulletproof coffee (BPC) is a cup of coffee blended with a tablespoon each of butter and coconut oil. I normally add a splash of cream as well. It forms a lovely frothy coffee like a coconut latte. They are high calorie and high fat so some people use them as a replacement for breakfast when they've been low carbing for a while.

Don't get bogged down in the nitty gritty. Have a look at the Bootcamp rules and the Ubercamp recipes and ask questions about anything. There are a lot of people on here who have been low carbing for a while and between us we have a lot of knowledge, experience and tips.

Baddderz · 19/07/2014 10:08

I need to sign up for this!
Is there a detailed plan biwi?

HolgerDanske · 19/07/2014 10:10

I agree, don't get bogged down. This way of life is NOT a complicated 'diet' where there are endless rules. It's really very simple.

BIWI · 19/07/2014 10:16

For all those of you who are new to low carbing:

Here's some introductory reading about how it all works

It's really important that you have at least a basic idea of the science and thinking behind low carbing, as it is a totally different way of losing weight from that which most of us know/have been told to do. You will be eating in a way which seems totally counter-intuitive, and you are likely to find that a lot of other people will be not only horrified to see you eating this way but may also actively try to persuade you that this is an unhealthy way to eat. You need to be confident that this way of eating is right for you and that you understand why it's a high fat diet!

It's also worth doing some further reading, if you can.

Have a read of the resources on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness . If you can, get hold of a copy of "Escape the Diet Trap" by Dr John Briffa or "Why We Get Fat (and What to Do About it)" by Gary Taubes.

And make sure you are prepared for what is to come!

The first few days of low carbing can result in what's called 'carb flu'. Not everyone gets this, but if you do you may feel pretty ropey for a couple of days. This is really a withdrawal from carbohydrate. To deal with it, ensure that you drink plenty of water and keep your fat intake high. And because the water can interfere with your electrolyte balance, you also need to make sure you're getting plenty of sodium, magnesium and potassium. So:

  • cook with salt and add it to your foot (another counter-intuitive part of this diet!)
  • drink a hot drink made from an Oxo cube or Marmite/Bovril
  • good foods are salmon, spinach, avocado and natural full fat yoghurt

If you have any medical condition that requires you to take ongoing medication, please consult with your GP to determine how this will work for you. If, for example, you are on medication for high blood pressure you will have to keep an eye on your BP levels - low carbing can help to reduce BP significantly, so your medication dosage may become inappropriate for you.

What is Ubercamp?

The key thinking behind Ubercamp is that it is a dairy-free few days. Many people, when low carbing, discover that dairy seems to impeding weight loss. It's also sadly all too easy to allow yourself to eat too much cheese/cream/yoghurt! In addition, if you wish to, there are some carb-counted plans for you to follow. Whilst the general idea behind Bootcamp is that it should be as easy to follow as possible, i.e. so there is no weighing/counting, it can be helpful (especially if you want to be strict), to do a bit of weighing.

I've put together plans for 3 days of Ubercamp:

Plan 1 - meat/eggs
Plan 2 - meat/no eggs
Plan 3 - fish/eggs

On the Spreadsheet you'll find daily menus, carb counts, a few recipes and shopping lists.

You don't have to use these of course! Just make sure that you have the first week (as many days as possible in the first week, at the very least) dairy-free.

BIWI · 19/07/2014 10:23

Baddderz - x-posted with you! Have a look at the links I've posted, but also, when you're reading the Spreadsheet, look at the tabs at the bottom. The rules of Bootcamp are given there.

On Monday I'll start a new thread, and I'll list out the rules in the OP, just to make it really clear.

Yama,Stuntnun & BIWI thanks so much ,have just read that & I am pretty much on track, just need to drop out the nuts for a couple of week but that is no biggie..

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 19/07/2014 12:01

Stunt I've just thought about the fast, it's meant to be eggs, butter and cheese. Hmm, what will we do? Follow the fast rules for the first few days then ubercamp, or dairy free egg fast?

Sorry about derail again!

JimmyCorkhill · 19/07/2014 12:40

Had to laugh today. Saw my donated copy of Gary Taubes The Diet Delusion (amazing read but tough going, it's what led me to this WOE) in the window of our charity shop. They had made a display of low fat cookbooks around it. Kind of missing the point Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 19/07/2014 13:18

Ugh, I can't wait until Monday, I have eaten too much crap today and feel rubbish.
Had an Atkins shake with cream for breakfast and was still starving so later had a bar, it's the first time I have had them. Was still starving and ended up having tuna mayo lettuce boats and a cheese string.

I now feel like death.

Roll on Monday.

StuntNun · 19/07/2014 13:43

Schro I don't think you have to have cheese, that's just what the person that came up with the egg fast did but he was doing it because he was hyperinsulinaemic and couldn't lose weight on a conventional low carb high fat diet. I'm planning to play it by ear as I'm a bit worried I won't be able to stick with it for three days. I just bought 30 eggs in my local shop and I was too embarrassed to buy any more! I know I'm okay with dairy so I think I'll get some in for just in case I can't handle eggs only. I don't like egg mayo much so it'll be boiled eggs, egg in a cup, fried eggs, scrambled eggs and omelettes for me. I'm also going to add bulletproof coffee as I need caffeine you're supposed to have a tablespoon of fat for every egg to get the proportions right. Reading up on it, it looks as if the egg fast works by maximising the liver's capability to use up fat stores by virtue of the choline in the eggs, the very low carb nature of the fast etc. I was looking at the steak and egg diet but that sounds way too extreme for me: a large steak and 2-6 eggs once a day!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 19/07/2014 14:25

I couldn't stick to a steak diet, I need to cover mines in cheese sauce (see where my problem lies?).

I'll try it at first without cheese too, I may need to keep the sugar free water flavouring though. :/ Will try and limit it right down though.

miffy49 · 19/07/2014 14:26

What about poached eggs with hollandaise Stunt? I just had that for my brekkie. I was making the sauce to go on some fish and I'd forgotten how good it is on poached eggs. Its almost pure butter isn't it so surely that would fit in with the fast.

StuntNun · 19/07/2014 14:48

Anyone interested in kicking off Ubercamp with an egg fast along with me, Schro and Questions please sidle into the Egg fast thread to avoid further derailing this thread which is really for Ubercamp/Bootcamp.

Yama · 19/07/2014 17:20

StuntNun - I've just read your egg fast rules. I'm very tempted. I already eat 2 eggs per day, every day. I bloody love eggs. I always thought any more would render me constipated though.

Ach, I have a day to decide. Uber or egg?
