Next Bootcamp is going to be a slightly different one from the norm.

It's only going to be for 5 weeks, but it's going to be stricter than the others.

The plan is that the first week will be Ubercamp, which is a no dairy version of Bootcamp; weeks 2 and 3 will be Bootcamp and then weeks 4 and 5 will be Bootcamp Light.

If you just want to Bootcamp (rather than Ubercamp) you're still more than welcome to join!

Anyway, if you want to join in, sign up here.

Anyone know if it's a coincidence that I have been lc'ing for about 7 weeks now but my last blood tests have come back and I have to see the nurse next week re: cholesterol? This has never been an issue before? Stressing myself out a little about it Sad

StuntNun · 16/07/2014 22:04

DoIneedhelp LDL cholesterol can rise temporarily at the start of a LC diet. I'm happy to look over your lipid profile results if you want to PM me about it.

doineedhelp · 17/07/2014 06:53

Thanks stuntnun, I'm seeing the nurse on weds so I'll ask for them. I'm stressing because major heart problems in my family, nan died at 55 years and mum at 65 years :-(

doineedhelp - StuntNun knows infinitely more than me about cholesterol, so it's definitely worth talking with her.

One question - is there a history of high cholesterol in your family do you know?

If not, it's worth doing a bit of reading about cholesterol, because it's not always the villain that it's portrayed to be. In fact, there is some suggestion that low cholesterol in women (especially as we get older) can be a bad thing.

There's a really good book called "The Great Cholesterol Con" by Dr Malcolm Kendrick that worth a read - here is his website and Zoe Harcombe is worth a read on the subject as well.

It's also worth knowing - as you may be asked about your diet/have low carbing slagged off - that the link between saturated fats and heart disease is increasingly disputed.

BIWI · 17/07/2014 07:39

That NHS piece is interesting. First, because it represents the beginning of a public/state acknowledgement that the mantra 'fat is bad' is finally being challenged by the mainstream. And second, because even though the evidence is there, the article is still couched in terms of 'don't believe it, don't change anything, our advice is still right'!!!

BirdhouseInYourSoul · 17/07/2014 07:43

I'd like to join! I've never low carbed before so may probably hover between bootcamp and ubercamp. But I currently have no fridge freezer until the 3rd August so it may be easier to drop the dairy anyway :)

In my opinion the problem with cholesterol testing is that it can be used as a bit of a blunt tool by doctors people that don't really understand the science behind it. What should happen is that your total cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides results are put into a computer program along with your family history and risk markers such as weight, smoking history, alcohol consumption. The program then gives you a ten-year risk of cardiovascular disease on the basis of which treatment decisions can be made. What often happens is that you are told your total cholesterol is too high and you should go on statins. But it isn't always as straightforward as that. And the cholesterol tests aren't foolproof, for example since starting low carbing my total cholesterol has gone up. Which is generally considered to be bad right? However the bulk of the increase is in my HDL level which is the 'good' cholesterol.

Another issue is that the LDL level includes both the bad small dense LDL and the neutral or possibly beneficial large buoyant LDL particles. The tests to differentiate between the two aren't generally available. So there isn't any easy way to tell whether your LDL result is good or bad.

HolgerDanske · 17/07/2014 08:29

My cholesterol tested slightly higher than ideal a few months ago. But my GP said she was still very happy as the actual ratio was good and to keep dong what I am doing. I am so glad I have a doctor who understands the low carb WOL in relation to diabetes and is happy for me to continue.

doineedhelp · 17/07/2014 09:07

thanks everyone, i have had a read of some stuff around LC and cholesterol so i will hopefully be going there armed (a bit!) but as you say it is often the small LDL that is bad but the tests don't differentiate. I have also read that i could maybe cut down on butter and coconut oil and increase olive oil as the main fat, BIWI would this be okay for BC / BCL etc?

Plonkysaurus · 17/07/2014 10:19

Very interesting NHS article BIWI. I was a bit Hmm at the conclusion as the study to me yells 'ditch the transfats and you'll be ok'. Of course I'd like to see more publicity about the damage grains can do to us, but that's another tale for another time. I'm very interested in the cholesterol thing too, as I've a family history of heart disease and diabetes that I'm desperate to avoid personally.

I mostly wanted to come on and say...I've lost 4 lbs in a week thanks to this diet. I feel fantastic, my skin is getting better, I have plenty of energy and yesterday I tried to stop myself from boredom eating. I have been making loom bands to give to the kids at our wedding, and it keeps my hands busy when I'd otherwise be snacking. So much of my job involves just reading things online that it's too easy to mindlessly shovel unecessary food in.

So I don't think I'm going to do ubercamp because I'd likely be cutting things out for only a small loss, but I'm still in for BC proper.

I'm away 17th august for two weeks so I hope this will give me a good kick start :)

BIWI · 17/07/2014 13:27

doineedhelp - olive oil is perfect, but try to avoid cooking with it. Butter, coconut oil and lard are better for cooking.

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/07/2014 13:37

Tesco sells bottles of pure coconut oil in their Indian section that is tasteless and only £1 odds a bottle.

I love cooking with it, nothing ever sticks to the pan, especially great for cream cheese pancakes.

PoirotsMoustache · 17/07/2014 14:02

going to read up on this Ubercamp malarkey - I am hopeless at working menus out though and cba cooking. Can't do belly pork or cheeks or any of that stuff. Bleugh.

I need to go to BIWI's house for five weeks and be TOLD what to eat, and be beaten with a Big Stick if I'm bad.

^This is me also!!

I'm in. Been low carbing for about three weeks. I lost the most weight in the first week when the novelty was still there - since then the scales have crept up slightly as I've become somewhat weak-willed. Only want to shift half a stone, for holiday at end of Aug. Will treat myself to a big bowl of muesli with nice cold semi-skimmed milk on Sunday morning, then straight into it.
