Week 8 - Low Carb Bootcamp - Come on Andy!

BIWI · 23/06/2014 07:43

Welcome to week 8 where hopefully the tennis will distract us all from England's performance in the World Cup!

Come and register this week's weigh in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness or on your own Weight Tracker

And just a reminder re rule 6 - because I'm a bit of a broken record about telling you all to drink more Grin - here's how much you should be drinking:

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from another low carb website

Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

In this hot weather, remember that you will also be sweating a bit more, so you may need to try and squeeze in a little bit more if you possibly can!

Whoops, just saw SayraT link to the counter site - Apples 14g and bananas 22g per 100

SayraT · 26/06/2014 06:56

Grin that's why I didn't put apple's and bananas on! Maybe I should so people can see.

I think rhubarb is the lowest but I'll have another look tonight.

StuntNun · 26/06/2014 07:30

DoIneedhelp curry pastes vary quite a lot in carb counts so I would read all the labels and pick the lowest. Remember you only use a tablespoon or two. I add coconut oil, meat, shallots, peppers, baby corn, mange tout, coconut cream and a tin of tomatoes. If you want a thicker sauce then grated swede works well or you can strain off the liquid and fast boil it on the hob to reduce it. I usually cook it in the slow cooker so there's a lot of liquid.

doineedhelp · 26/06/2014 07:40

stuntmum thank you, I will investigate the pastes.

NeverHadANickname · 26/06/2014 08:06

I'm glad its not just me with the coconut cream, both of the ones I bought were the same.

Food today:
B - bpc and yog with cream
D - chicken mayo salad
T - i'm out for a meal but looking at the menu it'll probably be meat (possibly pork) with a salad

LittleMissDisorganized · 26/06/2014 08:16

Bird I'm stuck a couple of lbs off 2 stone since January so it sounds brilliant to me.

Fresh homemade yogurt this morning - yummy. Just wondered if anyone knows what happens to the carb content - the milk I put in was 5g/100g but presumably some of that is used by the bacteria... and then I strain it... so no idea really what I'm eating in terms of carbs in the finished product really. Trying not to eat huge amounts.

4 more days Actually, feel a bit better today.

Suzymoo09 · 26/06/2014 08:23

Morning all
After 2 weeks of not moving I had a visitation from the whoosh fairy and 2 lbs off since Monday - how weird it comes off - in stops and starts.

So I have reached my first mini goal in time for the big birthday!

I also feel I recognise myself again - I look like the old me - do you know what I mean? This is priceless and I can't thank BIWI, Stuntnun and everyone else enough - thank g-d I didn't stay with that weight loss marketing maching beginning and ending with "W".

Have a good day all.

Suzymoo09 · 26/06/2014 08:24
  • "machine"
SayraT · 26/06/2014 08:28

LMD I had the same question about homemade yogurt, I am currently eating about 100g of it per day I think but I have no idea how to work it out.

I'm also in the same position as you, 3lbs to go then that's me at the 2 stone since January.

Food Today

B: Fried mushrooms, coffee with cream
L: Pan fried chicken leg (thought I'd bought thighs), lettuce, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, pepper
D: Not sure friend staying and she said she would make dinner
S: FF yogurt, 100g watermelon, 100g strawberries (just worked out carbs from all fruit and veg and its about 24g which I think is ok for an occasional day).

SayraT · 26/06/2014 08:29

Well done Suzy that is fab Grin Flowers

LittleMissDisorganized · 26/06/2014 09:25

Sayra Grin I think you'll get this - I couldn't sleep last night due to me messing up my medication, so I'm lying there drawing this diagram in my head
lactase
lactose ----> lactic acid (H+) plus, um, gas of some sort and probably water, anything else...???
and thinking that if it's anaerobic shouldn't there be CO2 around somewhere... Blush

(this is probably a bit worrying, those of you that said there's no nutrition in medical training are right, it would seem there's a distinct lack of basic biochemistry also)

Maybe google is my friend this morning ....

LittleMissDisorganized · 26/06/2014 09:26

Bother, lactase is supposed to be over the arrow. least of my problems

doineedhelp · 26/06/2014 09:41

D - salmon fillet with courgetti and broccoli stir fried in coconut oil

magso · 26/06/2014 10:47

Suzymoo well done! It must feel good to get to your first goal. I thought I had too but realised my scales were under reading so I get to have a second mini celebration in a few weeks time!
Now I have a small marrow and am wondering about making marrow spaggetti - although I will need to buy the peeler gadget! Any one else tried marrow-etti? And did the family like it? I am assuming marrow is also fairly low carb. (runs away to check)
Thanks BIWI for the egg fried cauliflower rice idea.
B duck egg in a cup with butter
L ham salad
D low carb sausages, fried tomatoes, cauliflower and mini sweet corn spears.

Pisseslikeahorse · 26/06/2014 11:20

congratulations Suzymoo09 hope it make the celebrations that much better Smile

Suzymoo09 · 26/06/2014 11:59

Thankyou lovely people.
The reason I can post more today is I have a day off work! It is so nice to be at home.
Some more info on low-carbing with fruit here:
lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/whatfruit.htm
It seems raspberries are the lowest sugar berries and mine are just coming out at the end of the garden - so I will look forward to having those with my yogurt in the morning.

Suzymoo09 · 26/06/2014 12:03

doineedhelp · 26/06/2014 12:52

oh no, don't be daft suzymoo its fine, i was just shocked at how high carbs they are so will have to restrict to weekends...

miffy49 · 26/06/2014 13:12

I make my own Greek yoghurt too. You can guarantee that it always causes arguments when people start to discuss the carb content. There are two factions. One says that its correct to use the carb content of the original milk where the other says that its lower due to the bacteria using some of the sugar while its multiplying. The latter seems to make sense to me. Seems that manufacturers work out the nutritional info for the labels using the ingredients rather than analysing the finished product.

The rule of thumb seems to be to use moderation in how much you eat until you find out if you are one of the people who stall on it. I love my small bowl that I have after my main meal as a dessert with cream flavoured with coconut and some vanilla and cinnamon. It keeps me sane!

FolknNorah · 26/06/2014 20:47

Hi all, just shouting my shit as feeding The Toddler.

B yoghurt, dash of cream, few seeds decaf BPC.
L left over bolognese with spinach mixed in and cheese

doineedhelp · 27/06/2014 07:45

Morning all, does anyone know if alpro yogurt is okay, 2.1g carbs per 100g?

doineedhelp · 27/06/2014 08:04

hmmm, just had it for breakfast with a handful of raspberries and cream (couldn't face another egg!) and i'm thinking not okay as it tasted very yummy sweet

hey ho, its done now... menu for the rest of the day is:

L- chicken salad with feta and olives (full fat dressing)
D- chicken parmargiana (without the breadcrumbs) and buttered veg

I might be having a glass or two of white wine with dinner too Grin

hope you all have a good day

LittleMissDisorganized · 27/06/2014 08:46

DoIneed - it has polyols in, which are a kind of alternative sweetener. I only know because I used to eat it, thinking I didn't tolerate dairy. Turns out I don't tolerate carbs! It's not the worst thing, as you say only 2g carbs but very low fat so ironically you'd need to add lots of cream to bring the fat content up.
Are you lactose intolerant?

doineedhelp · 27/06/2014 08:58

thanks littlemiss

No I'm not, it was the only one in sainsbury's this morning, they didnt have any total full fat left... i added about half the amount of double cream so fingers crossed it'll keep me going until lunch!
