Week 4 - Low Carb Bootcamp - Keep on keeping on

StuntNun · 26/05/2014 05:14

Helloooo! StuntNun here filling in for the lovely and dedicated BIWI who is off on her hols. So how are you all getting on? I'm sure lots of us are seeing the scales go in the right direction fingers tightly crossed for a pound off myself this week but please don't worry if the scales aren't budging, it's pretty common for there to be a weight loss 'pause' as your body adapts to a low carb diet. Please post your progress and say whether you're continuing on Bootcamp or Bootcamp Light. And if anyone has any questions please ask as it's great to get into the science behind low carbing so we have some ammunition against accusations of being on a fad diet.

As always, the rules are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and you can track your weight on the cunningly named Weight Tracker.

By way of inspiration I've put together some info on how we got into this mess in the first place...

Why do we gain weight?

Before I started low carbing I wondered about squirrels. Yep, squirrels. I've never seen a fat squirrel, have you? But squirrels, as I'm sure you know, hoard up huge quantities of nuts and seeds and store them in little caches all over the place. So why don't they eat them all? I assume squirrels like nuts and seeds and yet they manage to resist the urge to stuff their admittedly cute little faces until their food is all gone. Humans on the other hand... humans are rubbish. We eat too much, we know we eat too much, we feel bad because we eat too much, and yet we keep doing it. So why are we so rubbish compared to squirrels? The paleo/primal nutters like me community will tell you that it's because we're eating a diet that is too different from the diet we evolved to eat and that the biggest problem of all is too much carbohydrate.

When you eat a carbohydrate-rich meal, your body releases the hormone insulin to signal the muscles and liver to store carbohydrate. On a conventional diet, however, our muscles and liver are constantly kept at full capacity. Since these glycogen stores are permanently full, any glucose that can't immediately be used by the body is stored as fat. Another action of insulin is to shut down the release of fat from our fat cells so our own fat stores become inaccessible. Then when we get hungry again we eat yet more carbohydrate and the process starts again, more and more glucose is stored as fat and the weight piles on. Worse still, the constant bombardment of our muscles and liver with insulin when their glycogen stores are already full causes them to become less sensitive to the effect of insulin, or insulin resistant. The pancreas responds by releasing more and more insulin and our blood sugar levels start to drop too low as the body frantically clears glucose into its fat stores. Eventually we find we are hungry all the time, starving only two hours after we last ate. And because our blood sugar levels are low, what do we crave? Yet more carbs. So we end up trapped in a viscous cycle of carb addiction, hunger and weight gain while our ever more ample fat stores are unusable.

Hopefully this has described the process by which the weight creeps on. In next week's thread I'll put together some info on how a low carb diet reverses this process, allowing us to use up our fat stores and achieve the weight we want to be at the same time as improving our health and our energy levels and reducing our risk of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Good luck all for the coming week. Onwards and downwards!

Touching in for today - all fine, but sometimes struggling to make sure I am eating the right balance, especially when I am trying to cook for DH (picky) and DS (easier).

For today:
B: nothing - not deliberate, i just ran out of time. And can only find low fat yogurt, so nothing easy to take with me.
L: salad with egg, blue cheese, avocado and bacon pieces
S: Olives and babybel, if needed
D: Pulled pork and coleslaw, probably with sour cream

Working through my water as well.

So, I have a 8.5hr flight to the UK on Thursday - any ideas on what I can take with me? I was planning some cheese and maybe beef jerky. I could also put some pork scratchings in my bag. I am flying business, so i will have some choice in food, but they will bring round the warm nuts, the ice cream bar and the bread basket and all the wine, so I will need things to help ward off the temptation.

antimatter · 27/05/2014 18:19

check beef jerky as it often has a lot of sugar in it
I would take some choritzo or kabanos, or even some roasted beef

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 27/05/2014 18:22

I have had a crappy, crappy day. I have succumbed not only to cake but toast. Back on now, will be boot camping again. Mea culpa.

CQ · 27/05/2014 18:25

Quick question again - I think it got lost towards the end of the previous thread - how do you know when you are fully keto-adapted?

I'm a runner but still a bit scared to really push myself, 4 weeks in. How will I know? My long routes don't have any shortcuts home Grin

I have majorly goofed today - went out for lunch and I merrily ordered cheese soufflé and salad - thinking it would be low carb. I always try and eat things out that I can't/don't cook at home. I thought soufflé was just eggs and cheese - I've just looked up the recipe and it's got flour in it too ShockAngry

Now I feel all tired and grumpy. Not sure it's all in my head or a reaction to the sudden intake of carbs.

LittleMissDisorganized · 27/05/2014 18:27

Ah, RunLike, that's great then.
spamm having never flown business, I have envy there!! Don't know re: what to take as not sure what you are allowed to take out of the country. I love flaxseed coated fried chicken (on recipe thread) but are you allowed meat like that? I'm guessing not. Sometimes life gets in the way and that just has to be ok.
OhWhat here's a hand back on. Tomorrow is a new day, and you will have learned from today.

glenthebattleostrich · 27/05/2014 18:28

A good day here.

B ff Greek yogurt
L ham and philli rolls, 1/2 bag pork scratching, cucumber, babybel and a peperami (was out at a museum)
T roast belly pork, salad

2.5 litres water so far, 1 cup tea with cream. Will have a couple of cups of caffeine free tea and more water tonight.

Next I'm going to start shredding, probably at the weekend, too much work to do before then :-(

linesandlines · 27/05/2014 18:46

I want to know that too, CQ! I've been selected as a bone marrow donor. Had the initial blood test the same day I started LC'ing in mid march, and had the final medical including shedloads of blood tests today. Is 2 months long enough for my bloods to have recovered / improved on baseline? I'd feel awful if some with leukemia couldn't have a marrow transplant because LC'ing had made my blood test results temporarily wonky.

Any medically inclined people here have any ideas?

readyforno2 · 27/05/2014 19:49

Didn't manage a weigh in today.

B- coffee with cream
L- egg mayo with salad
D- roast courgette, asparagus and garlic mushrooms with venison burgers from the local organic farm. It was delicious!

costababe · 27/05/2014 19:50

Spotsondots · 27/05/2014 19:52

Hello everyone

Have been lurking for a little while having started last week a bit late. Didn't have the best start - some cake and ice cream over the weekend but I did have mastitis so am giving myself a bit of a break. Managed to lose 0.6lb despite that which is better than nought. Back on the straight and narrow today now I'm feeling better.

Locarblil · 27/05/2014 20:01

Hello. Just checking in - have been away and tho I mainly stuck to BC; a dessert and a piece of birthday cake (would have caused major offence if I hadn't eaten) slipped in. So I'm pleased to be almost 1.5 lb down on last week. Will keep pegging on. Off to MIL's this w/e and she is one for feeding you up. I think I can manage most meals - it tends to be help yourself from a groaning table, but I really don't want to have to answer all the questions which go along with low carbing. TBH that's part of the reason my eating wasn't great over the long weekend. Any ideas on dealing with that?

Glen - I'm planning on starting shredding soon too. June will be the month of shred for me - that & the BC had better make a difference!

Locarblil · 27/05/2014 20:03

Forgot my food

B - egg in a cup
L - some slices of cucumber & cheese coffee w cream (not v hungry)
D - Spag bol

S - pork scratchings, lettuce leaves dipped in guacamole.

Velocirapture · 27/05/2014 20:18

1lb back on. I have lost a grand total of 1lb in 4 weeks. But I know why and I shall keep on....

StringBeanJean · 27/05/2014 20:25

Hello all - have got hold of the pig to twig cook book so am hoping to find some more recipe inspiration. And have also managed to acquire some of the fabled coconut cream! Not quite sure what to do with it now, any top tips gratefully received...

Trying to cut down on cheese a little this week, although I live for cheese so may find it a little tricky. Just want to see if it makes a difference. So, today:

B - Greek yog & raspberries
L - egg mayo, smoked salmon, salad
D - garlic prawn and greens stir fry

Glen - I'm also starting the shred soon too, need to tone up the old bum and tum before my hols. Have you done it before? Tell me, is it hideously painful?

Hissy - so glad to hear your DS is recovering. Remember to take care of yourself too - sending love your way (sorry if that's a bit unmumsnetty) xxx

Trashy - hope you're feeling better. Did you get your test results today in the end? Hoping all is OK and the docs have sorted you out with some meds.

Spamm - business class! Lucky you! Could you take some celery and dips, perhaps? Pork scratchings sounds like a good idea to me, cheese might get a bit sweaty...?

Lines - well done you! GrinGrinGrin

Keep on keeping on all. Reading your posts and seeing how supportive you all are is really keeping me going, it's good to know you Grin

lowcarbforthewin · 27/05/2014 20:54

Thank you LittleMiss I can cope a little with things changing, I just can't cope at all with loud noise or my daytime rests being interrupted.
Stringbean a little coconut cream with some berries is good, also added to Greek yogurt is lovely.

Well I'm cross and proud of myself at the same time. I was feeling dreadful so I said to myself I could have anything I wanted. Snickers bar was the reply (haven't had one in months and months). Went to the shop, stood in front of the chocolate and decided, nope, plenty of time for that sort of thing later in life, it looked cheap and nasty and I didn't want to feel a failure. So I left the shop without one. I was SO PROUD of myself. It felt huge.

I promptly rewarded myself with some chocolate covered coffee beans which I have leftover in the cupboard. I ate far too many. The 'fuck it' feelings and self pity and exhaustion overtook me.

However, had a big supper with some friends and there was chocolate cake and ice cream. I had one chocolate shaving, decided it was disgusting and didn't touch anything else. Just stuck to pulled pork which was delicious.

So in some ways, I feel great. I'm going to forgive myself the chocolate just because it was such a very tough day and I am so exhausted. Still wish I hadn't done it though. Two more days of noise to get through and hopefully I can get through them without the crap food.

glenthebattleostrich · 27/05/2014 20:59

String, the first couple of days are, but then I start to enjoy it. Level 2 is horrible but worth it.

I lost about 8 inches overall last time.

Gimme a shout if you want a shred buddy

StuntNun · 27/05/2014 21:10

For Shredders there is a monthly Shred thread (a new one will be started in June) and a more general Jillian Michaels thread for her other DVDs as well. There are always new people joining and there are a few more experienced people on there as well if you have any questions or just want some commiseration about sore bits. I did day 33 of the Shred today .

Thanks all - I throw the words "business class" there as if everybody does it - sorry, very crass of me. But it has far less appeal and glamour than it sounds, as I am going to be away from my DH and my DS for 10 days and that is longer than I like. DS is 9 and growing up fast, and DH does a great job of taking care of him, but DH gets quite depressed if I am away for any significant length of time, as he does not get his usual adult interactions when I am not around and finds it hard. I have a babysitter stepping in to support for 3 evenings each week, so DH can at least go to his Taekwondo classes, but he still find it hard.

StringBeanJean · 27/05/2014 21:55

Glen - have just ordered the DVD so shall be starting this weekend. Would love to be your buddy... As long as I can keep up with you! Will be the first exercise I have done for 3 years Shock. Is it weird that I'm actually looking forward to feeling the burn?

Stunt - thanks for the link. Level 33 you say? You is well 'ard Grin

Lowcarb - the coconut cream was totally delish with yog and raspberries. Although surprisingly coconutty. Think I must be getting mixed up with coconut oil, didn't think it would taste of actual coconut for some reason!

RunLikeSomeFeckersChasing · 27/05/2014 22:16

Day 2 of bootcamp over. Bit of a one. Managed to send my shoulder into spasm first thing, I have form and it hurts like hell. Got a physio appt to try to work it out. Seems to have alleviated symptoms but sore head and generally felt dire. Did ok on food.

Breakfast - homemade burger and cheese
Lunch - prawns, mushrooms and spinach
Dinner - salmon with boursain, spinach, broccoli
Snack - chorizo and cheese

Fear I am too heavy on cheese? I'm also hungry. How often can one snack? I'm at home tomorrow so can do a heavier breakfast and see if that helps. Energy is in my boots.

String - shred is hard but doable. I prefer level 2 to 1... Have been doing it with ripped few times a week but when my shoulder ceases being a cock I'm doing ripped all out. Should be fun! If I can find some energy from somewhere.

JaneParker · 28/05/2014 07:42

Well done to everyone. I had some of the Awfully Posh Pork Crackling Angelse Sea Salt things last night - I bought 10 packets. I am not that keen on them. They don't taste like real food. I'd rather eat a load of chicken skins or fat off the edge of a slice of beef and I was not even hungry when I had them but I can see they are a reasonable snack. They are very filling.

I am still taking gellatin in hot water with some cream but I think my meat delivery with broth is coming today from here www.laverstokepark.co.uk/. I was only going to order the broth as I prefer real foods to fake or manufactured and a tub of Gelatin cannot be as good as eating real bones, but added other meats to help mitigate the delivery charge.

I suspect our hearts won't weep for the husband of spamm, as far too many men go away for 10 days and never give a through to their wife left behind and certainly the wife does not get a babysitter for 3 nights so they can go out in his absence. I certainly agree over business travel which i do quite a bit - nothing like as good as you think. In fact if it's just Paris or somewhere like that I prefer to get up very very early for a very early flight and get back that night. My aim is not to have a night away on business although that's hard to achieve.

On planes (and I have been eating like this or paleo of a good few years now) I usually take cold bacon and eggs cooked the night before for breakfast although if you're lucky you might get something eggy on the flight. I usually have something for a lunch too in a plastic box like a tin of tuna emptied out with some veg - sliced raw peppers or cucumber etc , avocado is a good one too except can be hard to get into - cannot take metal spoons on trains although your keys can be used in a similar way. We just booked our summer holiday (all inclusive resort place - ugh but the children will like it).... I hope they have lots of meats and fish and eggs. We once stayed at one before in Jamaica and there were some incredibly greedy people who would have a full dinner at 6pm and then return at 9pm for a second full dinner having had afternoon cakes never mind breakfast and lunch. The English were taking full advantage of the free alcohol too whereas those from abroad were not.

I am going to have salmon friend in olive oil with a tin of smoked oysters plus courgettes, peppers and some spinach with butter on the side and I had better eat my asparagus today before it goes off.

cousinsandra · 28/05/2014 07:57

Just weighed in with a 4.25lb gain! But have been holidaying abroad with ice cream, bread and booze so no surprise, in fact thought it might be more. So I think I'll just take myself over to the ubercamp page....

LittleMissDisorganized · 28/05/2014 08:10

CQ I'm afraid my best answer is that you know when your doing whatever exercise it is and you can feel it's easier/ back to normal/ possibly better than normal. Which is not much help if you don't have an escape route or someone to rescue you!

lines I'd answer your question but I'm not sure what blood tests you are concerned about/ expect to have recovered? It should make zero difference to your routine bloods - FBC (in the US called CBC), U+Es (kidney function), probably little difference to LFTs (liver function) unless you have also stopped drinking and previously drank more than recommended. The sorts of bloods that might be affected by a LC diet in the long term are your sugars especially if you are diabetic, and especially HbA1C (that looks at long term sugar control), and some change to your lipoprotein ie. 'cholesterol' measurements which in the longer term will improve if they were raised. Any use... feel free to be a bit more specific (and StuntNun feel free to correct me Grin what do I know?!)

RunLike the appetite suppression bonus of LC will kick in in a few days and the headache go. Just make sure you are eating until you feel full at mealtimes, and then it's fine to snack if you are genuinely hungry, but the need will really lessen soon. As for cheese, it's an individual one and time will tell if you can have what you are and still lose weight or need to rein it in. Personally I let myself have one dairy-heavy meal a day. Usually - just realised yesterday was two. It averages itself out though, I think...

Locarblil the people-asking-questions thing is hard, isn't it. Your MIL may not notice if you have a plateful of LC food from a buffet that the balance of food has changed. No need perhaps to explain - " are you not having my home made bread?" "not today, thank you." For me, at several stone overweight, I can get away with a quite simple "I'm not eating sugar or processed starch", and people think it's quite a good idea!! Once I'd lost a stone or so it got far easier, because I could say, well, I've lost 'ballpark figure' doing this, and it's important to me, so I don't want to sabotage it. And they thought, fair enough. Or seemed to!!

I now don't buy into the I-have-to-eat-or-cause-offense thing, or "socially obligated sugar" because this actually says far more about other people than it does about me. By nature, I too am a feeder, so I can see the other side. But if I put my self esteem in people liking what I feed them and they reject my food and I feel rejected (which I used to) then I need to find a much solider basis for my self-esteem, tbh. And so do the other 'feeders' in my, and your, life. Tough love, maybe, but love is at the root of it.

I've got a stressful day with my last counselling session this afternoon. I'm dreading it. Endings. What I've been asked to do for it. The whole thank-you-present-giving. Urgh. Roll on tomorrow. And there's leek and ham gratin in the fridge - ultimate LC comfort food - no off plan eating but a planned in comforting tea. This is real empowerment for me with my history of emotional eating.

LittleMissDisorganized · 28/05/2014 08:14

Sorry, what an essay!
And spamm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable. I'm going back to work as the 'breadwinner' in a couple of weeks and it brings its own challenges, doesn't it? Often little talked about ones, too. I hope your trip brings you much fulfilment and your DH copes ok with the change in home dynamic while you are away.

trash where are you, are you ok? Have you got some good antibiotics for whatever lurks in your poorly guts?
