Helloooo! StuntNun here filling in for the lovely and dedicated BIWI who is off on her hols. So how are you all getting on? I'm sure lots of us are seeing the scales go in the right direction fingers tightly crossed for a pound off myself this week but please don't worry if the scales aren't budging, it's pretty common for there to be a weight loss 'pause' as your body adapts to a low carb diet. Please post your progress and say whether you're continuing on Bootcamp or Bootcamp Light. And if anyone has any questions please ask as it's great to get into the science behind low carbing so we have some ammunition against accusations of being on a fad diet.

As always, the rules are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and you can track your weight on the cunningly named Weight Tracker.

By way of inspiration I've put together some info on how we got into this mess in the first place...

Why do we gain weight?

Before I started low carbing I wondered about squirrels. Yep, squirrels. I've never seen a fat squirrel, have you? But squirrels, as I'm sure you know, hoard up huge quantities of nuts and seeds and store them in little caches all over the place. So why don't they eat them all? I assume squirrels like nuts and seeds and yet they manage to resist the urge to stuff their admittedly cute little faces until their food is all gone. Humans on the other hand... humans are rubbish. We eat too much, we know we eat too much, we feel bad because we eat too much, and yet we keep doing it. So why are we so rubbish compared to squirrels? The paleo/primal nutters like me community will tell you that it's because we're eating a diet that is too different from the diet we evolved to eat and that the biggest problem of all is too much carbohydrate.

When you eat a carbohydrate-rich meal, your body releases the hormone insulin to signal the muscles and liver to store carbohydrate. On a conventional diet, however, our muscles and liver are constantly kept at full capacity. Since these glycogen stores are permanently full, any glucose that can't immediately be used by the body is stored as fat. Another action of insulin is to shut down the release of fat from our fat cells so our own fat stores become inaccessible. Then when we get hungry again we eat yet more carbohydrate and the process starts again, more and more glucose is stored as fat and the weight piles on. Worse still, the constant bombardment of our muscles and liver with insulin when their glycogen stores are already full causes them to become less sensitive to the effect of insulin, or insulin resistant. The pancreas responds by releasing more and more insulin and our blood sugar levels start to drop too low as the body frantically clears glucose into its fat stores. Eventually we find we are hungry all the time, starving only two hours after we last ate. And because our blood sugar levels are low, what do we crave? Yet more carbs. So we end up trapped in a viscous cycle of carb addiction, hunger and weight gain while our ever more ample fat stores are unusable.

Hopefully this has described the process by which the weight creeps on. In next week's thread I'll put together some info on how a low carb diet reverses this process, allowing us to use up our fat stores and achieve the weight we want to be at the same time as improving our health and our energy levels and reducing our risk of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Good luck all for the coming week. Onwards and downwards!

STS - but more than I deserve. Lost the plot between birthday celebrations and work travel. Time to knuckle down now and get a loss in the next few weeks - having mastered the art of gaining and losing the same bloody kilogram time and again, I need to reduce the set point. Good luck everyone, and thanks Stuntnun for the words of wisdom.

StuntNun · 26/05/2014 15:14

Antimatter it's more like 5-10% carbs, 15-20% protein, 70-75% fat for your macros on this WOE.

antimatter · 26/05/2014 15:32

I can see how hard it is going to be to get 70% let alone 75% of calories from fat!
This is going to be biggest challenge and I really like butter Grin but don't really like unsweetened cream, however as my tastebuds are changing I may have to revisit.

BIWI · 26/05/2014 15:56

Marking my place to catch up later when I'm home (briefly before going back to the airport tomorrow morning!)

PeonyStick · 26/05/2014 15:57

antimatter BPC really helps with this. Fat bombs sound like a good idea - there is a mesmerising array of recipes - anyone tried any good ones ?

PeonyStick · 26/05/2014 15:59

biwi have a great hol and forget all about us ! Rest that stick wielding arm Grin
stunt thanks for new thread and all the very fascinating acro chat^ !

lowcarbforthewin · 26/05/2014 15:59

Iwill that's so great about the stairs, so pleased for you.

So a question about macros while I'm looking closely at mine. Today it seems I'll hit the protein and carb %s but I'm about 40g low on fat. Should I be eating, say a tablespoon or two of coconut oil to get there? I'm assuming it's important to eat the right amounts so your body knows it is ok to release bodily fat, it just feels weird!

Maybe I really haven't been eating enough fat, or else my fitness pal is way out on caloric values.

PeonyStick · 26/05/2014 16:01

Crazy phone
....macro chat .... !!

StuntNun · 26/05/2014 16:09

Lowcarbforthewin I don't think you need to pay that close attention to the macros. Certainly don't eat something unless you're hungry.

Ok thanks, I've never done so before, just wanting to fine tune this as much as possible. I guess hunger is a much better thing to go by.

Helllo all - happy Bank Holiday! I hope your weather is not too bad, it is a gorgeous and very warm day here in Virginia.

I am 2lbs down this week, which is great. I am going to be staying on Bootcamp, which I have not left yet.

I am getting worried about the next 2 weeks, as I am travelling to the UK to go on a leadership course at Oxford Uni and I am worried about trying to stay on track. However, I will do my best by going to the gym to compensate, which I struggle to fit into my daily life at home.

Today my plan is:
B: Eggs, mushrooms and smoked salmon with a little cream cheese and cream
L: Pulled Pork with leftover veg
D: Beef kebabs and veg

Well done to all the loser and keep going everybody!

spamm · 26/05/2014 16:24

Sorry -usual request, can somebody please update me on the spreadsheet at 205 lbs for today.

I have just tried again, but got the same message.

Thanks!

Best1sWest · 26/05/2014 16:29

OK, this is weird. I read on the week 3 thread about oestrogen levels being affected and people having early periods. But... I am 51, have a Mirena coil, haven't had anything for at least 3 years ...until today! I am even having period pains and got the runs which I always used to get.

Notsoskinnyminny · 26/05/2014 17:11

Best1 I'm on HRT and had 3 periods last BC with 4-10 days between each one Confused and i still get occasional spotting. I wasn't impressed having to go out and buy tampons again.

Best1sWest · 26/05/2014 17:31

Glad there is a logical explanation. I have nothing in either. At least this means I am losing fat!

RoaringForties · 26/05/2014 17:37

Another rainy bank holiday here and I'm a smidge up on the scales but TOTM so trying to shrug it off. I did have a couple of strawberries and blueberries with clotted cream last night but think I'll stay on BC.

Well done to everyone, thanks stuntnun for the new thread and yes i reckon you are right with the water and skin complaints.

Iwill that is fab with the stairs.

hissy fingers crossed you get to go home soon.

Found it hard to juggle my water consumption this weekend though as have been on a couple of bike rides, rough off road stuff and the two do not mix!

Pisseslikeahorse · 26/05/2014 18:29

Spamm - all done.

Pisseslikeahorse · 26/05/2014 18:32

Hi all

I need a bit if help with some ideas for low carb camping, just can't get my head around it, No fridge or oven probably cooking on one burner ??????

ImSoOverIt · 26/05/2014 19:08

I guess eggs will be your friend pisses? They can be kept at room temp for a reasonable amount of time

ImSoOverIt · 26/05/2014 19:11

Best - if you have had post menopausal bleeding when you are not supposed to, you should see you dr. It will probably be just what we've all been getting, but you don't want the fact you are on this woe to mask something else.

JaneParker · 26/05/2014 19:34

I suspect there is a link between healthy eating and periods continuing. I am 52 and not a single menopause sign unlike most women and I suspect that might be down to virtually no sugar and paleo eating over the last 4 years or more. I see this is a good thing - that nature continues (rather than a bad thing that I still menstruate)

Best1sWest · 26/05/2014 19:55

Thanks, Imsooverit, I will get it checked.

Best1sWest · 26/05/2014 19:57

Don't know if I am post menopause by the way, having the Mirena in is hiding it I suppose. No other symptoms really, no flushes etc.

Birdinacage · 26/05/2014 19:58

Evening everyone, I'm down 1 and 1/2lb this week, hopefully by next week I will have broken through the next stone barrier.

Today was what would have been my final weigh in if I was only sticking to the 10 week bootcamp plan and in those 10 weeks I have managed to loose 22lb. The loss hasn't been consistent, the first two weeks I had big wooshes, things then slowed down and I'v lost between 1-2lb each week since then bar week 6 where I stalled and then gained a few lbs and week 7 where I lost those extra lbs again. So if you find yourself faced with a stall, a gain or a smaller loss than you were hoping don't despair, stick with it and things will improve.

The health benefits in just 10 weeks from changing my eating habits has been amazing too, I've gone from feeling hungry 24/7, having absolutely no energy, having trouble both sleeping and waking, constant sinus infections and horrible colds, IBS symptoms and having every part of my body in constant pain to feeling amazing. Everything is so much easier (and not just because I'm smaller) and I have so much more energy, I no longer have to worry about stomach cramps and rushing to the lo midway through a meal, I haven't had a single cold since starting bootcamp, I fall asleep straight away and can jump out of bed in the mornings and best of all my joints, muscles etc are no longer painful. The constant pain I have just put up with for the last 5 years has disappeared all from a few simple diet changes! Obviously as I'm sure you can guess by my being here on this bootcamp too I plan to continue on this way of eating, what started out as a last ditch diet to try and shift some weight has, for me, become a total change in my relationship with food.

Best1sWest · 26/05/2014 20:21

That's inspirational Bird. Well done.
