Week 4 - Low Carb Bootcamp - Keep on keeping on

Helloooo! StuntNun here filling in for the lovely and dedicated BIWI who is off on her hols. So how are you all getting on? I'm sure lots of us are seeing the scales go in the right direction fingers tightly crossed for a pound off myself this week but please don't worry if the scales aren't budging, it's pretty common for there to be a weight loss 'pause' as your body adapts to a low carb diet. Please post your progress and say whether you're continuing on Bootcamp or Bootcamp Light. And if anyone has any questions please ask as it's great to get into the science behind low carbing so we have some ammunition against accusations of being on a fad diet.

As always, the rules are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and you can track your weight on the cunningly named Weight Tracker.

By way of inspiration I've put together some info on how we got into this mess in the first place...

Why do we gain weight?

Before I started low carbing I wondered about squirrels. Yep, squirrels. I've never seen a fat squirrel, have you? But squirrels, as I'm sure you know, hoard up huge quantities of nuts and seeds and store them in little caches all over the place. So why don't they eat them all? I assume squirrels like nuts and seeds and yet they manage to resist the urge to stuff their admittedly cute little faces until their food is all gone. Humans on the other hand... humans are rubbish. We eat too much, we know we eat too much, we feel bad because we eat too much, and yet we keep doing it. So why are we so rubbish compared to squirrels? The paleo/primal nutters like me community will tell you that it's because we're eating a diet that is too different from the diet we evolved to eat and that the biggest problem of all is too much carbohydrate.

When you eat a carbohydrate-rich meal, your body releases the hormone insulin to signal the muscles and liver to store carbohydrate. On a conventional diet, however, our muscles and liver are constantly kept at full capacity. Since these glycogen stores are permanently full, any glucose that can't immediately be used by the body is stored as fat. Another action of insulin is to shut down the release of fat from our fat cells so our own fat stores become inaccessible. Then when we get hungry again we eat yet more carbohydrate and the process starts again, more and more glucose is stored as fat and the weight piles on. Worse still, the constant bombardment of our muscles and liver with insulin when their glycogen stores are already full causes them to become less sensitive to the effect of insulin, or insulin resistant. The pancreas responds by releasing more and more insulin and our blood sugar levels start to drop too low as the body frantically clears glucose into its fat stores. Eventually we find we are hungry all the time, starving only two hours after we last ate. And because our blood sugar levels are low, what do we crave? Yet more carbs. So we end up trapped in a viscous cycle of carb addiction, hunger and weight gain while our ever more ample fat stores are unusable.

Hopefully this has described the process by which the weight creeps on. In next week's thread I'll put together some info on how a low carb diet reverses this process, allowing us to use up our fat stores and achieve the weight we want to be at the same time as improving our health and our energy levels and reducing our risk of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Good luck all for the coming week. Onwards and downwards!

Parsnip I'm the same. I think some people eat a tablespoon of coconut oil with meals, or make fat bombs (tons of recipes online) to up their numbers. I'm finishing my meal with some coconut cream once a day to up my fat too.

lowcarbforthewin · 30/05/2014 12:36

And welcome back monkey!

antimatter · 30/05/2014 12:36

Parsnipcake - add say 80 g of butter and see how much would that add to your fat/cal intake add
then go and see how much 80 g of butter is (1/3 of a shop bough packet)
I like snacking on butter but you can fry on it or top any of your foods in it.

Sam id with double cream - you need to see how much it is you really need and then try to add slowly most of it to your diet.
Don't forget that we can also eat suet and dripping. I think making low carb soup and adding butter would make it very tasty.

LittleMissDisorganized · 30/05/2014 12:51

peony I am so delighted for you. I am sure you look stunning, and I agree that your ideal weight, after childbearing and sun/age related skin change, is probably a little higher than the ultimate goal figure. Really well done - and I take it that the NHS has taken as long to get your stuff processed as it has mine - didn't you get yours 2-3 weeks before me?? And I start in 2 weeks on Mon hopefully.

I've seen it mentioned a few times, and so I just want to say again, please don't use dioralyte for the electrolytes, it has sugar in. It's for diarrhoea and vomiting bugs where the rules of bootcamp go out the window compared to keeping you hydrated and stop you from getting sicker. It works because water piggybacks on the glucose and sodium to get into your system faster than water alone.

spamm sounds like you did brilliantly on your transAtlantic crossing. I'm interested that you are coming here from the States for a course - in my own field it would be more likely to be the other way round, so I am glad that Oxford University has such a draw.

locarblil so lovely to read that you felt good :)

notso I slow cook a lot in the winter, I need to get doing it again regardless of the temperature outside I guess. Thank you for the suggestion and the sympathy. Also StuntNun for your advice, feel a bit guilty for needing it as I should be giving not getting by now. But anyway...I really don't like chicken skin and struggle eating meat off the bone. I probably, if such things had been looked for when I was a child and struggled more, meet the criteria for Sensory Integration Disorder, or am at least borderline, as I have it with textures of clothes, and "slimy" things (though I can operate with gloves on ok...) eg when doing the washing up. Am Blush to admit it really, most of my adult life I have worked to hide and minimise its impact.

So I started today with bacon and eggs with butter and cream and I'll monitor my meals on MFP for a while to fine tune myself. I'm a bit disappointed as having just acquired a yogurt maker, I think yogurt always being breakfast, even with cream and flaxseed, leaves you with a big ask for the rest of the day as it means you need even more fat:protein which I find a challenge. Hmmmm.... will have a think.

trashcanjunkie · 30/05/2014 13:53

I'm coming! Possibly six to eight months behind you but I swear by the gods of bootcamp i will xxx

PeonyStick · 30/05/2014 14:51

monkey 3lb up is fantastic I can do half stone if I'm not careful on hol and yes missed you

parsnip you could try macadamia nuts if you're on BC lite .... Those babies are fat-tastic !

lmd yes NHS are staggeringly efficient !! Let's hold hands - I am a little nervous. Are you ? I am shitting myself ( not literally)

KinkyDorito · 30/05/2014 14:56

Please can you tell me how I make bpc? Have googled and it sounds complicated. I have filter coffee, coconut oil and butter and want to try it for mornings when I cba to cook!

Parsnipcake · 30/05/2014 14:56

peony I bought a vat of macadamias from Costco. 2 days later I had finished them. They are just too good. I actually just had some coconut cream and a few berries which has aligned my macros a bit :)

Parsnipcake · 30/05/2014 14:59

Years ago I did slimming world ( unsuccessfully). People used to mix low calorie hit chocolate powder with we ethnic and call them ferrero rocher ( vomit smiley) So I'm not feeling at all sad about the fact that my only dilemma is whether to have more cream or butter :)

Parsnipcake · 30/05/2014 14:59

We ethnic??? I mean weetabix

StuntNun · 30/05/2014 15:40

Kinky I make a cup of filter or cafetiere coffee (200 ml) then weigh 15g butter, 15g coconut oil and 5-10g double cream into the hand blender container, pour the coffee over so the butter and coconut oil can start melting then blend it with the hand blender until it's smooth, creamy and foamy. You'll know if you haven't blended it for long enough because it will start to split which ruins the texture a bit. BE WARNED you might need to work up to this. Unless you're used to eating butter (bleugh) then I'd start with 5g butter and 5g coconut oil or it could make you feel a bit queasy. The double cream is optional but it only takes the smallest amount, about a teaspoon full, and it makes the texture even nicer.

Rooibos tea with a teaspoon of coconut oil in is also nice. The oil floats on the top (in a nice way) and conditions your lips as you drink it.

olivesnutsandcheese · 30/05/2014 15:56

I loathe coffee but feel at bit jealous of all this BPC talk

do you think green rooibos tea with coconut oil would work? Might need to give it a go

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 30/05/2014 16:40

A quick re: my fitness pal. I've been low carbing for ages & know what I can and can't have but have only just (thanks to this thread) changed the goal settings on mfp.
I've noticed that avocado comes in at 9g carb per 100g (Have tried a couple of peoples' figures just to make sure it wasn't an error). I assume it is counting the gross carbs, and the net carbs would be around 2 per 100g. But the inflated figure then makes it show that I am going over my carb limits for the day, when I'm not. Same with fennel.

Any get-arounds, or am I missing something bloody obvious?

Parsnipcake · 30/05/2014 16:44

Just make your own on 'add food' or type 'asda/ waitrose avocado and you will get uk measurements

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 30/05/2014 16:50

Will do. (It was the Waitrose one that gave 9g though, which foxed me somewhat.)

glenthebattleostrich · 30/05/2014 16:52

Thanks for the advice. I'm 3 weeks in (and 10lb lighter!) So I'm really trying to stick to it. I feel much better, have more energy and my excema is clearing. I'm wondering if it's my body reacting in giving up wheat completely.

I've stocked up on babybel and peperami and am doing a meal plan for next week.

This thread is brilliant at stopping me. I just picture the disapproval of MN and crisps seem less appealing!!

PeonyStick · 30/05/2014 18:22

ok - this is BAD... and only for marmite wierdos who are looking for fat.... ?beeny

I just mixed a huge dollop of butter, some marmite and some philly... rolled it in balls and put in fridge...... = heavenly fat bombs.... If you like marmite like moi... or I guess you could use unsweetend cocoa instead of marmite.

Fat happy

PeonyStick · 30/05/2014 18:23

half spam... I find quite a few carb counts not perfect on MFP - particularly veg - you just have to bear it in mind.

F1onajb · 30/05/2014 19:51

I've fallen off the wagon Sad was doing so well ..... 9 lbs in 3 weeks. I ate some cake yesterday and had another 3 pieces today Sad I'm craving really badly. Help please

F1onajb · 30/05/2014 19:53

should say that I have a 17 week old DS who does not sleep through the night. he wakes at least 3 times. .... not making excuses though. am usually up from anywhere from 4.30 to 5.30 in the mornings. I'm really tired too.

KinkyDorito · 30/05/2014 20:05

F1 I'm sure someone more knowing than me will come along, but I would say drink lots and lots of water and get straight back on it with something with plenty of fat for tea. Then, start again tomorrow. I'm sure a blip can be quickly ironed out. Be kind to yourself Thanks.

Scousadelic · 30/05/2014 20:07

Hello all, 'tis I ex-timidviper/piscivorous

I did not start this bootcamp with the rest of you as I was going away for a 2 week holiday on 10th. Anyway I have been and not only eaten too much but have exercised not at all as I have broken my ankle in 2 places. Not only have I broken it but I insisted it was a sprain, refused to go to Portuguese hospital because they have a tendency to put casts on sprains and I didn't want a pot on while on holiday so walked on it for 2 weeks before realising I had a problem! Blush

Oddly enough it doesn't hurt that much it is more the inconvenience of the ankle brace (too late for a cast by the time the break was found), crutches and not driving. Anyhow I have had a week of feeling sorry for myself and eating shit so will try to start again Monday.

wombat22 · 30/05/2014 20:09

F1onajb - you need to just write it off and start again. The more sugar you have, the more you'll crave. Can you drink loads of water to take your mind off it?. and get back on track tomorrow. 9lbs is a fantastic loss in 3 weeks. Keep that in mind. Don't give up Smile

lowcarbforthewin · 30/05/2014 20:25

F1onajb it happens, just wipe the slate clean and start over. A baby that age must be knackering. I'm sure most of us have been there.

I am so pleased. Third day of really upping my fat at lunch time and getting from lunch to supper with no food. 10 years of a low fat diet and I was always ravenous by tea, and I think it's far better for me not to be having those extra calories. I won't mind if one day I am hungry and eat a little then, but I love the idea that for 7 hours my body is just ticking over, fuelling itself from fat stores. Take that fat stores!!

KinkyDorito · 30/05/2014 20:39

Scous ouch! I don't blame you for feeling sorry for yourself. Thanks
